P3P for PSP - Persona 3 Portable headed to the US July 2010
Yeah, I've only played the PS1 version, but I figure you can't shine shit.
Aw c'mon people, I didn't mean to start a flame war, I just wanted to know if I should start with P1P or P3P. P1P did look a little outdated, so that's why I was wondering.

On another note, I can't believe the game is still $39 :whistle2:( I went ahead and got it though. This game does look a lot different than a traditional JRPG, I really hope I can get into it.
Yeah, I've only played the PS1 version, but I figure you can't shine shit.
Well, the PSone version was severely censored and gimped for the US. A huge part of the game (the hardest portion of the game) was cut, tons of stuff was removed due to censoring, they changed the character names, personalities, and art, and in particular, made a white guy black. They also reduced the difficulty of the game. As for stuff that was already in the Japanese version, the UI was turrible and made playing the game a chore. All this and more was fixed in the PSP version. I would give it a shot at a low price.

It's not a flame war. I merely asked if he ever played the remake and he said he hadn't and just assumed the remake would still be shit, which IMO is not the case. Even I personally tried playing the PSone version a couple years ago and didn't really get anywhere since the original is so outdatedly unplayable. Just trying to let him and you know that the PSP version was vastly improved.

Yeah, I know, I just didn't want it to escalate further after he called the first game "shit."

Thanks for your help though, I am glad that P3P doesn't depend on the prior games. Does the game bring a newbie up to speed about the story and all of that? I did a little wikipedia reading a few years ago, and it kind of explained why the game was called Persona, and all of that. I was wondering if I needed to play the first game to really get it or if it's kind of rehashed in the 3rd game.

Not at all. The game is 100% newbie friendly and has absolutely nothing to do with prior games except for cameo names used in an MMO the male character plays in on of the social links, which is basically inconsequential. I think most people got their start on the series with 3, no worries.

If you bought it from Amazon you should e-mail them to see if you can add two more games to your order to get in on the b2g1 deal they got going on now. You should also take a look at some of the $10 games they have as part of the sale.

Yeah, I didn't know about the b2g1 in time (it already shipped). It's OK though, because I really don't have 3 games I really want to buy right now. I guess it's better to overspend for good games than for bad ones.

It's DoK. She can take it ;)
It's DoK. She can take it ;)
Plus, I am on good terms with you. If it was a different poster, I could have been meaner. ;)

P3P is sold out on Amazon (at least it was about 2 hours ago), I guess everyone had the same idea w/the B2G1. Still need to call Amazon and see if they'll let me in on the deal, even tho I bought this on 10/30...

I got the game today and it has the bonus baseball cap in the box :bouncy:
And I also called Amazon and they let me get the B2G1 deal too, so I bought Ys Seven Limited Edtion, and got LittleBIGPlanet PSP for free :D

The nice part is that I don't have to do the return or anything.

Really loving this game. I decided to try it out and ended up putting off God of War: Chains of Olympus. I can't put the game down.

So I take it you only have a "year" to complete the game? What happens if you run out of time?

You don't run out of time. There'll be a boss every month or so, just make sure you're strong enough to beat it and you'll be fine. Generally if you can go as high as you can in Tartarus, then you're good to beat the next boss.

The story bosses are generally easier than the Tartarus bosses anyway
except that fuckbag Fortune with the wheel and of course the final boss.

Hey, so is the story pretty much the same in all Persona games? Is the school always called Tartarus, but they swap out different people and stuff?

I really hope that Persona 2 and 4 come to the PSP, I'm definitely loving P3P.

No, but it's always in a high school settting.

I got this game from Goozex along with a lot of different games. I hope this game is good. I want to get rid of that awful SMT: Strange Journey gameplay out of my memory. The last boss for Chaos is a cheater with their cheap instant death spell that void all defenses. I doubt I will replay this game from scratch since I played The Journey and Answer from Fes. I also played the original one as well. Probably going to swipe someone else clear file or game plus save.
Is there any reason to get P3 Portable if I have P3 FES PS2?
There are pros and cons.

Pros:
--updated battle system to Persona 4 style (control of everyone)
--it's portable
--Female-oriented campaign with the female protagonist

Cons:
--No "Answer" section from FES

More like a "Pro" m i rite?

Seriously, The Answer sucked and the world is glad to be rid of it with this version. I like Metis, but everything else about it sucked.

This is by far the best version of the game IMO and it was worth it to me even at full price when I have all the other versions.

I agree with Dead of Knight. I thought the video clips of what started them to join their group (SEES?) should have been in the Journey as side-quests or something. The Answer seems like a bad add-on to only give dungeon crawling only.

I bought P3P for the female protagonist storyline, and I liked the idea of being able to control everybody's actions.

If you want a portable version. Otherwise not really.

oh, I never actually got around to it The Answer. I figured extra gameplay is extra gameplay.

I'm enjoying this game a lot more than either P3 or P4 at the moment. I think I'll actually finish it. I hope P4 gets the same treatment.

There are lots of little changes that make the game more enjoyable, aside from what I mentioned. Namely the cursor in place of walking, warping around with the square button, being able to skip text really fast, being able to leave and restart on the same floor in Tartarus, and paying to heal in Tartarus. It feels like it'll shave off excess play time.

 Holy crap, so do both P3 and P3 FES not allow you to heal and resume the floor you were on? That would really suck. I just bought P3 FES for my brother who only has a PS2 (he never played this game either), and I really like this game so much that I want him to play it. But that is really going to suck if Tartarus is going to be a huge pain...

I think you can only resume on floors ending in 5 or 0, but I just looked it up and you do get healed when you return to the base floor.

You can only resume from the boss floors and end floors as far as I can remember. In P3P you can resume from wherever you left off (and there are entrance portals on almost every floor). You do have to pay to heal in P3P but it's not too much of a burden on your cash (unlike in P4).

I think I may have messed up my game. I didn't follow a FAQ or anything, so I did not max out all of the Social Links, so I cannot create Odin or some of the other big Personas. I've tried beating the reaper and I can't seem to do it because you apparently need Odin for his Thunder Rage spell. So, almost all my guys are around lvl 70 - 80. Can I beat the game now? I'm worried that I'm going to have to really grind hard to get up to enough power...

As much as I love this game, I am kind of ready to move on to other games for now (I do want to come back and do all the S. Links and stuff later though).
I literally cannot put this game down. It's always "just one more floor" or "I'll play one more day."
Yeah, it really is an awesome game--is this your first Persona game too? I'm going to have to borrow someone's PS2 now so I can play Persona 4.

Your really not supposed to be able to beat the reaper in the first playthru. You can farm for gems to get one shot item that deals 9999 damage which will kill him in 1 hit which is what i did if you want. Once you do that and get to top you unlock a new dungeon that gives insane xp.

Yes, this is my first SMT game. P3P has exceeded my already very, very high expectations from the stylish trailer for the PS2 version years ago (I really liked the art and the music, had no idea the battle system and story would be this excellent). If I had a PS2 way back then I'd probably have triple dipped like everyone else that's ever played P3.

My only gripe is the presentation takes a really big hit due the visual novel style. I've had to watch a lot of the important cutscenes on youtube.

Thanks, I got Armageddon and beat it. Since I didn't max out my S.Links, I have to try to get as high of a level as possible to beat the game (I think, I haven't read the FAQ about the last boss).
does this game's install feature do anything? I have to switch it back on every time I boot the game or reload from a save.
I noticed a difference in load times, but then again I have a launch Japanese PSP. Probably less of a difference with people who don't have ghetto PSPs.

Most games of psp games I play that came with a install feature will reduce the loading time by half or quarter at worst. The loading time is pretty good for this game unlike first generation psp game or some current releases like Mimana Iyar Chronicle. The game is constantly loading to prevent one tremendous loading screen. The only real noticeable loading time is fighting a full moon boss.

yeah, the loading isn't bad. I'm just wondering why "Install" is always switched to off when I go back to the config menu. Games don't usually do that...

damn, get yourself a 3000. It's a night and day difference!

Peace Walker would disable the benefits of installation every time you put the system to sleep, and would only re-enable them after going to certain menu screens.

Same for this game. Really stupid.

Oh man, finally finished this game! 160 hours.
So, the last boss
was super easy. I tried Pandora's door and fighting Elizabeth, and I was sure the last boss was going to be freaking impossible.
I want to go back and max out all the S. Links and try to beat all of the optional bosses, but I definitely will have to take a break.

Anyway I loved this game, it definitely makes me happy I bought a PSP.
late to the party but should i just be focusing on 1 persona or trying to spread the levels around ?
And when you get Growth 1,2, or 3 cards, you can have your good Personas learn Growth so they can level even when they're not equipped.
