PlayStation 4 - General Discussion Thread

I hope you are right but I wouldn't look to Japan for the next big thing. Console gaming is dead in Japan at this point.

Titanfall being a X1 exclusive hurt its overall sales. It would have easily moved another million units if it was released on PS4. I think shooters are the "IT" genre until something else tops them on a regular basis. COD's success is unparalleled especially when you consider that it releases annually and sells in the tens of millions. The last 5 releases have combined to sell over 100 million copies. There is no surer bet in gaming right now that COD. To use a sports analogy, COD is Mariano Rivera.
Oh I know. Shooters will remain number one. I'm just hoping some Japanese devs who still want to make console games step up and do so now that a Japanese console is on top again. True that console gaming is mostly dead in japan, but maybe some of them can take a stab at some games with more western appeal?

If nothing else, at least there's the vita getting a lot if unique games despite the small base since then attach rate is so high.

Hopefully if the ps4 keeps selling well we'll see a similar trend with it getting a lot of niche, mid-tier type games.

Because Sony should want every bigger game coming out. Yes they are selling well but you can't tell me Sony is happy about letting ms get a 3rd party game.
Considering how it turned out? Yes. EA said they fucked up by not going multi plat and staying with Microsoft. Just means that EA along with other 3rd parties are going to be more cautious when Microsoft throws money at them to lock up an exclusive deal. Hell I wouldn't be shocked if we now stop seeing COD and other games getting DLC first on Xbox.

Let's copy other threads and everyone compare sales numbers to consoles' first month/year that came out 15 years ago. We can ignore those 1 year olds who are 16 and now in the core demographic, or the 5y/o who are now in college, or the 10y/o who are now out of college most likely, each newcomers to the growing gaming community. Meanwhile, older gamers don't usually just up and 'quit' gaming at 28 because their parents say it's for kids.

I read that Respawn wanted the specs on the PS4 to tailor Titanfall for it and Sony wasn't willing to reveal them in fear of them getting back to Microsoft.  However, they were willing to have the game made for the Vita and even offered funding to do so.  So if that is the case it was a genius move for Sony because giving up 1 game in order to have an entire generation of a better spec'd machine was more than worth the sacrifice.

According to rumors Activision has already made the PS4 it's lead platform as you can read about here. Not sure how long Microsoft has the contract for DLC, but yeah it's safe to assume it will eventually be first on the PS4.

How it turned out? It was number one selling game in march. Cod contact is for at least two more cod games. I doudt activison cares that ps/ PC gets it month later if they get giant payday from ms.

And yet, their sells would have been A LOT better if it released for PS3/PS4.

And yes, they will care. If the COD attach rate is way higher on PS4 than Xbox One then it means they aren't making as much off that DLC.

The way cod is going when contract is up in 2016 cod will be dead. Mw2 cod on live avg 1 million at one time. I was on ghost other day and 90 k people were on. Company's like ms/Sony should focus on other stuff then that garbage.

well of games like COD are garbage then I guess Sony didn't screw themselves over on Titanfall. In fact, haven't I heard you say several times now that the online FPS genre is a dying genre?

Titanfall is fresh with added mechs and other thing. Fps is dying because we need a cod killer.

I don't think FPS games will be going anywhere for a long time. This years Call of Duty will probably be a smash hit, and games like Battlefield still continue to sell well.

As a big Call of Duty fan I hope this year's game is more fun than last year's. Hopefully Activision really went all out with the Titanfall threat having been looming around their territory. Obviously the game didn't make as big of a splash as EA/Microsoft were expecting, but hopefully Activision stills improves their formula.

i will say im looking forward to this year game seeing it's sledghammers first real game they are doing alone and not working with iw like mw3.

You seriously underestimate casual gamers if you think COD is going anywhere. COD gets a lot of hate on the internet and it has been getting that hate for years now, but tons of people will continue to buy that game every year because it is one of the only games they play and they play it a lot.

that is true but with that said like i said before back in mw2 days 360 avg almost million people all the time right now ghost is like 100 k even below that recent and like 30 k on xbox one. i don't know numbers on ps3/ps4 seeing i dont have the game but im sure they not much higher. Most legit cod players now play black ops 2 becuase ghost is that bad. But yes people will still buy it including me.

The only upcoming FPS games Im interested in are Evolve and Destiny. Ghost was fucking terrible and Im burnt out on the COD franchise. The last one I enjoyed was Black Ops. I dont think its going anywhere though since people eat that shit up for some reason.

Those numbers don't matter when you see Ghosts was the #2 best selling game in 2013 and the #4 game in March.

Anyway, sales numbers are pretty pointless imo and we are speculating about what will happen in 2016, which makes it even more pointless.

I thought Titanfall would dethrone COD but a few of my friends already abandoned it and went right back to Ghosts. Im not a COD hater and liked the previous games but Ghosts was not that good so I really dont get it.

Controls (especially for vehicles) in BF4 are whack. Doesn't feel anything like BF3. Had to turn the game off, early in the campaign. The vehicle controls were atrocious. Kept dying, will need to find a way to change those controls.

That said, I put about 2 hours into Assassin's Creed IV and am really enjoying it so far. Never got into the previous AC games, but AC4's controls are solid and I like the pirate/naval combat stuff.

Last I read, COD was the best selling game so far on both PS4 and X1. So any talk of death might be a bit premature. I'm sure it will happen but it is still selling millions. In the eyes of the "suits" COD is king until someone dethrones them. I would bet my house that MS would have paid double or triple what they paid for Titanfall to have COD exclusively on X1.

Whoever gets COD exclusivity will win the console wars. Sad, but true.

COD is so popular that having it exclusive would definitely be a big factor in the console War. Just like when Dreamcast didn't have Madden; that hurt DC a lot. It's important to get some other COD style games out on the market that people enjoy just as much; that way if COD goes exclusive then you still have something popular that helps keep people on the system that doesn't have the exclusive COD.

No one would get cod only on their system.
I was going to say the same thing, but you never know. I wouldn't rule out MS or Sony getting COD as a timed exclusive.

On a side note:

I'm surprised that there's still a timed exclusivity on map packs and other items. MS paid to make cat themed weapon camo (and others) be a timed exclusive! [which makes no sense to me]

Be that as it may, the fact that the 1st one wasn't and the makers of the game admit it should have been multiplatform, don't it seem that Sony is in good position now that EA wants the game on both platforms? There's plenty of exclusive games that I'm sure each company would have loved to have, but none have been particularly devastating to the point the other company has had any lingering regret.

I was going off of Geoff long article he wrote with inside info was not me talking. A lot of people respect what that guy writes. But of course you guys would say it's all false. Sony screwed them selfs by not getting titanfall. Why would they even offer respawn a vita version and not do at least ps3.
Did you not read my post earlier? They wanted for PS4 but did not want to release specs yet, in case MS got a hold of them, and honestly those specs are what are killing MS now. They saw potential and with the PS3 dying out with next gen they didn't want to waste that type of game on there. They thought what if we get this killer IP that can move Vita while we can, then EA/red pawn got a great offer from MS, and it is well known that they gave Respawn and EA misinformation about what XboxOne would bring. EA took the money to save the development and the rest is history. If they could have foreseen the power and success that the PS4 would have brought they may have tried to wait a bit or not signed and exclusivity deal. However MS saved Titanfall, and now both EA and Respawn are trying everything to move to PS4 as soon as possible

Microsoft isn't above paying big bucks for timed exclusivity. Remember GTA4 and how much better it sold on the 360 at first

so what your saying is titanfall would have run amazing well even if the game engine they used for the game is complete joke and even runs not great on high end pcs. i will be honest titanfall was a let down for me and really sad about that it made me go back to cod. i don't see how muhc more copys it would have sold on ps4/ps3 is by far not many like you guys think.

Titanfall was arguably good, but once I hit level 30, I thought "Yep, I've seen all this game has to offer" and went back to playing other games.
IMO the price structure for the game was a joke. I know not everyone paid $59.99 for it, and my opinion may be biased because i'm not a big online gamer, but something like this needs to have a relative low entry price point ($39.99) to get people to buy the game and then those who enjoy it can be suckered into paying for Maps---which are inevitable in a game like this.

To me, Titanfall was nothing more then a COD clone with robot/mech skins. I know the game is deeper then that but not by much. I mean they might as well come out with a Godzilla Titanfall clone where you're just giant monsters running around destroying eachother/environment.

But you're right---there wouldn't have been record setting PS3/PS4 sales numbers but because of the install base it would have sold better then it did on the X1--I don't know how you can even argue against that.

My guess is because the groundwork for the game has been built it'll be fairly easy for the developer to turn this into a yearly franchise game (God I hope not) where they just piggy back using map layouts and renderings similar to what COD has been guilty of and it will cost a minimal amount to do so... BUT I see no scenario where it isn't on Sony consoles next release.

So I really like the pirate/naval combat in AC4, but the in-town, crowd-mingling, enemy avoid parts reminded me why I don't like this series. I'm not a huge fan of stealth games, and half the time, that's what you're doing.

So, that said, any suggestions on what I could swap this out for? I already have BF4, which is alright. I was thinking of picking up Need For Speed: Rivals since I want a racing game. inFAMOUS SS looks great, but I heard it can be beaten fairly quickly.

Currently playing rivals, really like it. Its really the only racing option for ps4 right now, but its pretty solid. Currently playing the cop side of the game, up to like level 13 or so. The online aspect of the game keeps it interesting but can get annoying when in a game with players who are much higher and want to mess with you.

Id redbox SS or gamefly it if you have either option. Unless you plan to plat game, its pretty short. It was fun for me for the one playthrough but didnt love it enough to play a second time to plat, plus that 44 in trade in to BBY was calling out to me so had to just get on that while i could. Basically paid 6 bucks to rent the game with that.

I'm pretty sure this is incorrect. They have sold more copies of KillZone then COD on the PS4.

I don't know if Activision has actually released numbers on how many PS4 versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts sold... Other than overall software numbers and attach rates, I don't know if there is sufficient software data to say which games have sold the most. Right now we do know that Killzone: Shadow fall sold 2.1 million, inFamous: Second Son sold 1 million and that's about it for specific titles.

That's what I did too hah, bought for $48
BB credit with GCU and then traded it to GS for $43 after 100% good playthrough. It's a great game but too short.

You might be right but according to NPD/attach rate COD is outselling Killzone by a wide margin (obviously US only). I know Sony released a statement saying KIllzone SF sold 2.1 million units WW which included digital downloads and bundles. Activision on the other hand has not released any sales figures with respect to digital downloads yet. I'm guessing COD still sold more than Killzone.

This is eye opening and and makes it pretty funny when Xbox fans try to say the PS4 has no games.  And that summer drought on the Xbox One is coming, ouch!

I liked Rivals, but man the cops are annoying as fuck when you're playing as a racer. Just getting to the next event can be a big pain in the ass.

Its laughable really, and what's up with The Amazing Spider Man 2 on the Xbone? Is it not coming out?

Word is it is being canceled... and there has been no reason given yet. It is coming out on every system except Xbox One... super weird if you ask me...

Rumor is delayed or not coming at all, I wonder if it will be any good. Seems Sprider-Man games are pretty hit and miss.

Some speculate that it's development has been canceled. They could be optimizing it to run better on XB1, typical delay due to special features, etc. No one really knows why it's release date has been set to TBA.
