Getting a 360 Friday, and I have a question.

I don't like sports games or first-person shooters. Should I bother getting a gold Live account? I don't want to pay $50 a year to play just Dead or Alive. That's what ended up happening with my original Xbox.

Yes. For the record, I haven't played any fps shooters or sports games with my gold account. I play a lot of burnout, Lumines, Mortal Kombat 3 lately.

And you shouldn't pay more than a $35 for a 13 month card. I think 13 months of voice chat, XBLA games on live etc is worth that. (Hint, look at amazon sellers).

Don't forget just about every game on the 360 coming up has a presence on live. For example, Viva Pinata, you'll able to breed and mail creatures to people.

It's worth it. Just buy a premium system, which comes with a month of free gold anyway, and see for yourself before you buy a year.
Thanks for the info. I didn't know there was a free month. Do you need a credit card for the free month?
No.

So how hot exactly does everyone's system get? Like is the top really warm or on fire or what? Also how long is it recommended to leave the system on for a continuous time?
So how hot exactly does everyone's system get? Like is the top really warm or on fire or what? At most, the system gets warm and I even have mine in an entertainment center, which they say it gets the hottest in. I think of it like a PC, if you leave it on overnight, it won't hurt it at all, but every now and then it'll need a reboot so it doesn't freeze. I leave mine on all the time for extended periods, especially if I have to go somewhere for a couple hours.

Ha Im a natural worrier so I always have things that makes me worry. So I took back Madden to Blockbuster last night and rented DoA4. I popped it in and it played fine. I shut the console off and turned it back on with the disc still inside and got the same message I did with Madden. It says something along the lines of to Play this disc insert it into a Xbox 360. I restarted and it worked fine. Is this normal though? Thats twice its happaned, although they have both been rented games. DoA looked fine on the back though. I was just curious if It warrants me returning it for a different system or am I just overreacting.

That's happened to me twice in the whole year I've owned my 360.

I haven't played on Live much, but so far, I haven't been able to play with any friends at all. I tried to play THAW with somebody, got their invite, but it said that I couldn't connect to that game, or that it had expired. I kept trying to join his session via his gamercard but got the same message. Another friend sent me a PDZ invite tonight and I had the same exact problem, even when I tried to join from his gamercard.

All I've heard about is how easy and intiuitive XBL is supposed to be, but I haven't had any success yet. Do you guys think this is because of poor programming in the games, something on my end, or is it just representative of the whole Live experience?

It isn't representative of the whole Live experience. Far from it, actually. It's gotta be something on your or your friend's end. It's probably router conflictions. You have to make sure ports are open for XBL and that your friends ports are too. That would clear everything up.

I have no trouble connecting to XBL, playing quick random games against people or downloading things. Do you think not having a port open would affect just me playing a game with friends and not anything else?

I remember I had to configure this router to work with other stuff like my DS and PSP, and I always have a hard time with it. Sounds like I'm in for more fun. ;)

Yep. Me and some friends use to have the same problem all the time. Go to the system blade, network settings, test Xbox Live connection. The NAT setting needs to be 'Open' on both your 360 and your friends. What does it read now?

I got my router all ready to configure and my 360's NAT came up as Open. So, that means that I should have no problems like this, right? If it's on the other person's end, I'll definitely have to send them a message letting them know about this NAT/Port stuff.

If you configure your router ports and your NAT is open, the problem isn't on your end. Send them a message telling them to open their ports and make sure their NAT is open.

Just another question about the warranty...so I had my check dated from 9/30 (I got my Xbox 9/20) and I was getting nervous about when it would clear because a few weeks later I never saw it clear. Eventually it did come up in my account.

Now my question is: That was a few weeks ago since the check cleared. Do they mail me anything? Like.. ANY type of info on my warranty like when it expires, what I should do if/when it breaks, etc etc etc?

..Or is my serial number covered and if/when it breaks, I call, tell them the number and they see it has a warranty?

Pimpinc333's port forwarding guide added to the OP, and it seems that I need to redo some of the sections to match that of the latest Xbox Dashboard makeover. Expect that soon.

I own Contra, UMK3, and Uno for Arcade. I didnt have my network cable plugged into the back of the system and it wouldnt let me play the full versions of Uno or UMK3 but it would Contra. This isnt right is it? I should be able to play the single player games without having me being online right? As soon as I unhook the cable and sign out of live it immediatly goes to the screen that says play demo and purchase full game. Am I missing something or is something wrong? If it makes a difference I bought Uno and Ultimate on the first 360 I had to exchange over the weekend but I have the same hard drive.

LOL, okay I'm going to call again (finally) about my brother's account... I forgot about it...

Edit: I'll let you guys know when I call tomorrow

I have two accounts which are live enabled on my 360. One was the free 1 month of gold which is now expired. The other was my original account.

I like my new account better. (Primarily because of the name)

In any case my old account has gold acess. Is there anyway I can have my silver account share this acess to live?

No. Been there, tried it and no go. I doubt even a call to MS will switch the membership over to the one you like, but to know for sure you'll have to call them.

Alright, well I have a 360 death story and I doubt anyone cares but I feel like ranting so I'm gonna post it here.

I bought Gears of War on Tuesday, and by Wednesday, the console was giving me an error while trying to do co-op with zew. It said that the disc was unreadable, and told me to clean it and try it again. Well, I took the disc out and it had circular scratches on it. I cleaned it and tried playing again at least 5 times, only for it to pop up with that message every single time. Okay, I figure, maybe the disc is faulty. I go back to Gamestop and show him the game. He says that my 360 is doing it and almost doesn't give me an exchange. The manager was pretty cool and said that he'd open a copy here and let me exchange it. So I play it without problems up until yesterday, when after playing for a while I check the disc and it has another circular scratch on the outside of the disc going about halfway around it.

So now it's time to call Xbox Support. I call them up, wait for about 15 minutes. Not too bad. I talk to some guy named Paul, who's a pretty nice guy. He says the console (which is a launch console) will be fixed for free, but their computer system is down and that I'll have to call back tomorrow. He also says that there's nothing they can do about the shit copy of Gears of War that I now have. Okay, I figure, and I decide to call them back today. After 20 minutes on hold, I finally talk to somebody. I give them my reference number, and 'refresh' him on the problems that I'm having. First of all, I can't understand this motherfucker. I have no idea where he's from. He then tells me that Paul from yesterday screwed up, and not only was this problem not under warranty, but that they would not fix it for free. He said the only way that this could have possibly happened is if the console tipped over or if there has been vibrations under the 360. It's on a fuckin' dresser. There ain't no shaking or vibrating. It's been sitting there for months. So I ain't havin' this. I ask to talk to his supervisor. I make the mistake of saying that I'll wait on hold. No shit, 40 minutes later he finally tells me that I'll be able to talk to the supervisor. I talk to here and explain all of this shit all over again to a 3rd person. She tells me the same thing that this guy tells me. It's hard to understand her too. She tells me to get a new disc and to try the game without the HD, but that they can't fix it. I tell her at least 3 times that both copies of GOW were new and that I tried it without the HD. She finally gets it through her head that the copies were new and tells me that they'll fix it. They no longer ship boxes though, so I have to find a box and pay for shipping. They also basically told me I was fucked with the scratched up copies of the game.

That was some shit I shouldn't have had to go through.

Yesterday I decided that I wasn't going to be able to live 2+ weeks without my 360, so I bought a new core. I'm still going to send in my shitty one and I'll sell this new one when it gets back. I'm going to be out a few bucks, but it'll be worth it to get to play my 360 during that time. The 2nd copy of Gears works alright, but it did give me an 'unreadable' error once already. Luckily cleaning it fixed that problem. The problems were happening with co-op, and not multiplayer, so that's good because I'll mainly be playing multiplayer. Alright, finally done ranting, but goddamn, that's some bullshit.

Why do I have the feeling that if you called again and didnt give a reference number, started from scratch, you would get a different answer.

Sucks man, don't know what to say. What are you going to do with 2 consoles after its fixed? You could always try to return the core back ;)

Hey, uh, I didn't want to start an entirely new thread for this question, so I thought I'd just ask it here:

Is it possible to change your XBL username? I really hate mine. I remember somebody saying that you could change it, but it costs like 800 points or something. Just thought I'd ask if that was true.
Yes, you have to pay 800 points to change it.
Where in the marketplace is that? I haven't been able to find it. Is it even in the marketplace?

I bought the Phillips HD component switcher to get HD on my 360 games. I have everything hooked up, but when I switch the button on the power brick to HDTV I get no picture. How do I fix this?

It appears that there's nothing at all I can do to change my brother's account, if anyone can help me I would appreciate it... I tinked with my account online, but he doesn't have one since it's under the same email. The person that helped me on the phone had no idea what to do, so I guess it's impossible

Yeah so I think there may be something wrong with my fans. I can turn my system on and within 20-30 mins no matter what Im doing the back of my console is burning up. The top and bottom are really warm but not as bad as the back. I went to my friends tonight and we played his system for like 3 hours and it was barely warm all over. I have my system sitting on top of the box it came in sitting on top of my dresser, I only have it about a foot away from the wall but thats as far away as I can get it. I have the power brick sitting behind my tv against the wall but I dont think that has anything to do with it. Does anyone else's system get this hot? Do you guys think there is something wrong with my fans and should I return the console again?(Ive only had it bout 2 weeks and have already swapped it once).

I just got a 360 core yesterday and I was wondering if you have to use the 360 memory cards or the 20 gig hard drive to save games? Or can you use a different usb device like an ipod or a flash drive or and external harddrive? Thanks for any info i appreciate it.

You can only use the HDD or the memory cards.

Newbie 360 owner here. My hard drive is already full of demos and arcade games. Can I hook up my PC and backup my 360 drive?

Thanks, that looks like it will do the trick.

Although I once got burned by something for the xbox that claimed to do transfers, but only worked via the memory card, thereby preventing many things from being moved.

great info, i was thinking of picking a 360 sometime in 07 to satisfy my urges for awesome graphics and the ps3 is not something i want to put my money on. thanks for the information

Played Contra co-op over live the other day, and our headphones didn't work. They worked 5 minutes later in GOW.

Is this normal?

Do all XBLA games not allow communication while playing online?

All the ones I have played do.

I'm going to get a 360 on Thursday of this coming week and I was wondering, is there anyway to transfer my save data from my old Xbox to the 360?

Wasn't sure where to post this, but here goes.

Is there something going on with Xbox.com? I've noticed when I check my profile, all of my recent achievements appear completely out of order. Ex: I unlock several of the achievements for finishing hard mode missions in GRAW and they all appear at the bottom of the list; even before the one for finishing the training mission. Sometimes the "last game played" doesn't get updated for days at a time too.

It's weird.. everything appears in order on my 360, it's just Xbox.com doing this.

To answer your first question, I think there's a 3rd party transfer pack type deal, but you'd need memory cards for both of the systems. I think.

As for the second one, no. Achievements just add replayability to the game and it's a sort of bragging rights. You can purchase marketplace points actually in the marketplace, xbox.com, or at a B&M store.

I was looking at www.xbox360achievements.org and I saw something along the lines of x# of achievements with X points or something similar.

Is that related to one's rep or something?

I can't wait to get back on XBL :D.

Achievements are worth points that add up to equal your gamerscore, which is the number under your Rep. Rep is how other people rate you. If they avoid you, prefer you, etc. The higher the stars the better the rep.

Bit of question. If I get the core version, could I just buy a memory card to replace the hard drive. And what would I not be able to do with a memory card instead of a hard drive.
Bit of question. If I get the core version, could I just buy a memory card to replace the hard drive. And what would I not be able to do with a memory card instead of a hard drive.
The memory card is too small. Get the HD. You wouldn't be able to take full advantage of XBL. You have to save arcade games and 360 game saves on the HD and they can take up a bit of space. You wouldn't be able to download demos to try out games before you buy, and you also wouldn't be able to play any original Xbox games that are backwards compatible.

So if I got the core version, without the HD or a memory card, would there be games I could not play and or save on? (Someone told me I would not be able to play certain games or save them without an HD or a memory card)

Basically I'm looking to get a core system and simply play Xbox360 games. No online, no wireless controllers, nothing fancy, just fun games. Could I?
