I'm watching this Breaking Ground show. I don't actually watch NXT, but this makes me want to a little bit.
As somebody new to the brand, I would recommend NXT. I just started this year. It was actually a New Year's resolution to get into NXT and follow it from now on. Of course, I didn't even dare watch it from day 1 because that would take forever. What I did is watch the PPV/Takeover shows beginning in July 2015, and the weekly Wednesday shows starting in October to catch up on current storylines. It doesn't take too long because the shows are only an hour so you can get through 2-3 in a good sitting. It's very enjoyable wrestling. My favorite thing is watching a small crowd have a huge impact on the show.

I've been meaning to get into that Breaking Ground series as well.

Careful, you're not allowed to appreciate the FullSail crowd on the internet. They're all about themselves, you know. (The ECW arena gets rose-colored glasses and we get shit on constantly. I fail to see the difference and think history will see it close to even - a revolutionary show that happened to have a passionate crowd.)

I suppose I see the comparison you're trying to make (lord knows nobody likes the Green Lantern dude, so it's not as if we don't see those ECW fans as marks for themselves). I do have an (admittedly) irrational hatred for that lil' Bayley fan. Kid has her own t-shirts and a twitter account she uses to put herself over. So I'm not into that at all.

If you guys follow Chikara, their season opener last night was exceptional. Definitely recommend checking it out online (esp. the Snake Pit vs Colony trios match).

fuck that kid. Her and her family deserve the hate.

Totally relevant...

We were so happy at that. Out section started cheering harder.

Where do I look to watch Chikara? Never have, but I know of it.

Yeah not a fan of that kid's family. I don't hold it against the kid as much as I do the parents as if it weren't for them I think she would be a relatively harmless part of any show she showed up at. I think the FSU crowd gets a bit more hate than it deserves when it's a small portion of the crowd that can make it all look bad. It's the same small portion that does the same thing at a Raw taping or PPV, but they didn't stick out near as much as they do at FSU because of the crowd size differences.

With that said, FSU at it's worst is nowhere near as bad as Impact crowd was for the longest time. Long way to go to get that bad.

Oh good another subscription service. I mean that's great in the sense I wish roh did it, but I already have 2 wrestling subs.

So Alex Riley returned to the joys of perhaps a dozen people and pinned Bull Dempsey (NXT's new CJ Parker) with the sloppiest knee to the face I've seen in quite awhile.

Why are they wasting screen time with this Elias Samson "drifter" gimmick? There's no chance that this is ever going to get over.

I'm loving American Alpha even though I originally thought that the name "Alpha Americans" would sound better. It doesn't matter though because you have two amazing wrestlers who could easily go their own way at any point and be successful.

I get that Nia Jax is a "monster" but I haven't seen anything remotely impressive. So she goes in there and demolishes girls that weigh what, half or less than she does?

I Think that's more because there are only three established faces in NXT that are female. Asuka, Bayley and Carmella (and Blue Pants if you want to count her as anything more then helping put girls over). Everyone else is either heel or still in development, the fact one girl's promo prior in the Women's Battle Royale a few weeks back was she got knocked out by Asuka as her only claim to fame is proof of that.

Pretty much that about Nia. She'll be good as a face, we want to cheer her. Liv Morgan/Gionna Daddio will be money eventually.

The Drifter, they stumbled onto gold there. It's such an awful gimmick that it's already drawing ~75% Eva heat.

I don't want to see Nia as a babyface anytime soon. I want to see if they can do with her what WCW did in the early 1990's with Vader. She definitely has the potential for it.

NXT was reeeeal good on Saturday. I'm not that guy that posts pictures of bent over chicks so I'm not doing a big review or anything, but it was the most fun I've had at an event since the ECW shows I went to around 97-98. We were sitting like 12 feet from the ring, at eye level since we were sitting on the stage. Really cool and a pretty unique experience.

Tye Dillinger's injury was something none of us could figure out until we saw the videos online later. Looked like he just fell down randomly and the match was stopped.

I often hate how fucking annoying the fans can be at stuff like this, thinking they're the most important part of the show and all that, but I did like that a group of around 8 of us getting "OH BAYLEY YOU...YOU GOT WHAT I NEEEEEEED...BUT YOU SAY HE'S JUST A FRIEND" going at the beginning of the Bayley match was pretty much the only time any of the wrestlers acknowledged our side (since the stage only held around 100 people on each side of the entryway). She was definitely trying not to laugh at first but eventually gave in. Nia Jax got some approval from at least part of the crowd as well. I'm not really into her, she strikes me as Awesome Kong minus the Awesome. Just seemed to stand there while Bayley bounced off her a bunch.

American Alpha's outfits remind me of late 80's Trapper Keepers. Also, they are pretty awesome. The outfits AND the team.

For some reason Baron Corbin jiggles more than Samoa Joe.

Corbin lost a lot of weight from his nfl days. Allow me to ruin him for you: there's a smiley face in his belly. Now try not to see it. It's almost like the clown face in Emma's top.

Drunken AV Club/Giant Bomb/Twitter person Zodiac Motherfucker summed up Corbin nicely for me once during NXT Takeover a few months ago:

"YEAH BARON I'M SURE THIS FAT SAMOAN LUNATIC IS GOING TO BE SCARED OF YOUR BLUEBIRD AND STAR TATTOOS"

So who do we think AJ faces tonight? Has to be someone else, I would hope a step up from Axel and more current than Jericho.

Woof. Between Jericho last week and Miz this week, it's clear WWE doesn't trust AJ to talk at all.

I mean, he's not the greatest promo guy in the world, and he doesn't have to be - but dang. I hope this lack of faith in his mic skills doesn't translate into not giving him the in-ring due he deserves in WWE.

Bret Hart just announced he's been diagnosed with prostate cancer: http://www.wwe.com/inside/bret-hit-man-hart-prostate-cancer-diagnosis-28631049

Why does life continue to shit on this man and his family?
Bret Hart getting to surgery and maybe being able to remove all of it at one time is really good news. To get to that point he's had to have been going through treatment for some time now. I wish him and his family the best.

My mom is fighting colon cancer now and the treatments that are available today are pretty impressive.

I dunno, I say the jury is still out on that one. AJ isn't the best mic guy, but he isn't terrible and has improved over the years. I think WWE has been enjoying teasing things with AJ and will continue to do so until they have a Wrestlemania match for him, I hope it isn't with Jericho though.

I read some story recently where AJ said one of the funniest things I've heard in a while. He said the Claire Lynch thing in TNA didn't work because the woman playing her wasn't hot enough.

Christ a'mighty, people. The whole angle was killed because that woman's name and personal info ended up on forums.

Yes, it's wrestlecrap, and yes, we can laugh about it in hindsight.

But for the love of god can we not bury her for her looks? She came and went in three weeks because of personal indignities. Let's not keep that going four (?) years later.

I didn't mean it was funny because he said she was ugly. I found it funny because he glosses over the part where it was just bad writing and even worse acting.

I think it's funny to see that people on forums always get mad when the women are criticized for their looks, but then you watch something like Breaking Ground where they're literally getting classes on how to do their makeup and look pretty and they're being told their looks are what will make them money.

Well, sure. Knowing what will work doesn't mean that you have to accept it as a matter of fact. It's a social condition, not a scientific fact that fuckable sells for women. I don't work for WWE, so I have precious little say over how they run their business. I can not like how they do it, but that's about it. I can also recognize that makeup or not, they're a far cry from "bra and panties" matches of just a decade ago. So I recognize progress, even when it's relative.

As for the forum, I assure you that I'm not a bloody bit different off the internet. Loud, proud, and PC as fuck. Zero shame in that regard.

I don't want to co-opt the wrestling forum, though, and I've had my say on the matter, so I'm leaving it at that. Gonna dig into some Royal Rumble 1992 instead. I find myself really, really liking Million Dollar Man's in-ring style lately. Far more than usual - and that's as someone who knows how respected he was in the past.

I'm not disagreeing or trying to trash you man. I'm more pointing out how people are so vocal that they want more out of the divas, but behind the scenes the company is still focused on them being pretty over anything else. Then they play dumb when they're criticized for having sexism issues.

Fair enough, appreciate the clarification.

Apologies for any preemptive defensiveness - though I thought I'd avoided that. Gaming + pro wrestling tends to set my "get ready for tons of backlash on your belief systems" alarms into overdrive.

For something equally baffling, Hype Bros beat Dudleys in a dark match tonight. I like Zack, but can't stand Mojo. (It sounded like the fans were chanting for him last night during one of the slower matches)

Instead of a new post, I'll edit. Tonight's NXT is a good episode. Finn vs Apollo main event, where Finn points at me in the crowd >.>

Oooh, thanks for the reminder, it had fallen off my radar entirely. Weds night is my sit on my ass and watch tv night, so Nitro and NXT are on the queue. Unless I decide to tuck into Transformers Devastation.

During last night's Impact, an EC3 promo aired in which he mentioned himself having been a piece of shit at times. An advertisement for the show "Schitt's Creek" airing after Impact displayed on the bottom of the screen. That popped up 2 seconds before EC3 said the word "shit" and disappeared a couple seconds after. Brilliant marketing.

Oh, man. Yep. fuck Hogan, that shit was ridiculous on 4/15/16. No wonder they turned him heel - his face antics were gonna kill the show. The fans seemed to pop for it, though (what the heck?).

Rumor mill sez Vince wants Undertaker vs Strowman at WrestleMania. Christ almighty, what a fucking mess.

I hope Taker says no. It's not worth getting in the ring for what is unlikely to be a good match. Might as well bring back Nathan Jones if you're gonna go that route.

LU was unsurprisngly good. I don't understand what they're [not] doing with Vampiro and Pentagon. Are they retconning? I would have rather seen him be a manager than stay on commentary, but Vamp is better this year than last.

They cut my sign during Finn's match, but featured it during Enzo and Cass, right during the SAWFT chant. Was happy my girl got shown on the American Alpha promo package.

It was pretty much everything people hated about Hogan in 95-early 96 rolled into one. By the time The Giant came out I almost skipped the segment because I KNEW where this was going. The only way it could have been worse is if Beefcake was there (not sure why he wasn't - according to the prior episode he was going to be involved).

The crowd was more into him than a lot of others, although that seemed to be an exception...usually during this time period crowds came off mixed or mild for Hogan at best.

----

Here's a fun Wrestlemania scenario:

Undertaker vs. Braun Strowman. Undertaker gets hurt early in the match like he did with Brock at 30. Strowman is forced to carry the match. They are booked for 15 minutes.

The announcers on the 4/15 show mentioned that THE BOOTY MAN (which, frankly, deserves to be typed in all caps to draw attention to what a ridiculous name that was) was supposed to be involved - it was supposed to be a tag match. The irony is that, if THE BOOTY MAN was tossed into the match, there would be more back-and-forth b/w the teams (because Hogan's side would have a patsy to bump and build for the hot tag).

15 minutes. Christ, that's cruel. Would it be worse to go right to a finish in that case? People have high expectations of an Undertaker match at Wrestlemania.

Braun Strowman had something like 7 total pro matches under his belt when he debuted on Raw, so he was really rushed into this spot.
Pressure has not been kind to him, I got to see him in a dark match and he wasn't nearly as stiff as he is now. Maybe it's poor direction? The character might be literally messing with his head.

Can you elaborate?

7 matches? Holy fuck, I hope that's not true. For his sake.
I mean that they're making him as a monster. Monster's don't fall, don't sell, don't show weakness. So maybe he's worrying so much about staying on character that there isn't muscle memory to fall back on for actual action. We've seen how awful he can be, and with only practice matches to fall back on that might be why. He didn't make the Florida tours, he was a workout warrior that they kept really close to the vest. Outside of being a Rosebud.

Sorry ahead of time because I know I post about this dude like once a year, but this has got to be one of the worst matches I've ever seen and I'm still fascinated by this guy's story. Look at his offense. THIS was the guy Vince originally wanted as Hogan's successor. Imagine this guy leading WWF in the late 80's/earlly 90's.

Arn Anderson is a magician because he somehow got an almost passable match out of him. And LOST.

30 years of pushing your Tom of Finland fantasies on us (Vince is as straight as Jim Barnett.) teaches us that no matter what we think, the 5'11" guy is not getting pushed over the 6'5" beefcake. Whether its Magee, Zeus, Nathan Jones, Strowman, and...fuck, I don't even want to think of all the giant awful wrestlers he's put over.

The Big Show winning the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in his first match is still the craziest damn thing ever, but I really hope the Stowman / Undertaker rumor is false.

I mean, I could see it happening, but I hope not. Bray going over on The Undertaker in a rematch would make a hell of a lot more sense.
