I'm in the cell lasting 8 years or more camp.
Finally, Winning the US now shouldn't be Sony's concern. With the terrible value of the dollar they do significantly better on every game and system they sell in Europe and Japan than America. I still have no doubt the American Wii shortage is partially due to the weak dollar giving nintendo no reason to send systems they could sell elsewhere here.
I think Nintendo did admit that already (not boosting sales in the US by adding more units to the queue because of the weak dollar... dunno, I thought I read that somewhere...)
But as for the Ps3 "losing" or "winning"... I think we have all missed the point of this generation of consoles. We've seen that BC is becoming less of a selling point (in spite of some protests), and we've also seen that there's enough room in the market for 3 consoles. (4 if you count the PS2 still selling)
We have also seen (and I don't care if people think it's fanboyish to mention) the reliability of MS's console be a factor in the division's overal profitability.... due to what? anyone? anyone? rushing the console to market to ensure a lead... Of course no one estimated the Wii's insane popularity. So if Microsoft's bragging about going to be #1 this gen, they forget that the Wii is miles ahead of both them and Sony. The reliability alone is going give me pause when purchasing an Xbox 720... simply because they need to be shown that "rushed" != "quality", and the RRoD has made mainstream news.. so if MS thinks it can sweep this under the rug, they're mistaken.
I own the three majors this go round, just like last round. But next round might play out differently until I'm convinced Microsoft can design a console that doesn't die within a year. That's even with the great titles. I just don't feel like beta testing their hardware again.
Sony is in a good position to be a solid contender in most markets, a dominant factor in some others... just like Microsoft. The trick is, did MS burn a ton of goodwill trying to fix their hardware (this in spite of extending the warranty for the RRoD)? Only time will show us....
