PS3 - Are they screwed or will sales pick up?

Finally, Winning the US now shouldn't be Sony's concern. With the terrible value of the dollar they do significantly better on every game and system they sell in Europe and Japan than America. I still have no doubt the American Wii shortage is partially due to the weak dollar giving nintendo no reason to send systems they could sell elsewhere here.
I think Nintendo did admit that already (not boosting sales in the US by adding more units to the queue because of the weak dollar... dunno, I thought I read that somewhere...)

But as for the Ps3 "losing" or "winning"... I think we have all missed the point of this generation of consoles. We've seen that BC is becoming less of a selling point (in spite of some protests), and we've also seen that there's enough room in the market for 3 consoles. (4 if you count the PS2 still selling)

We have also seen (and I don't care if people think it's fanboyish to mention) the reliability of MS's console be a factor in the division's overal profitability.... due to what? anyone? anyone? rushing the console to market to ensure a lead... Of course no one estimated the Wii's insane popularity. So if Microsoft's bragging about going to be #1 this gen, they forget that the Wii is miles ahead of both them and Sony. The reliability alone is going give me pause when purchasing an Xbox 720... simply because they need to be shown that "rushed" != "quality", and the RRoD has made mainstream news.. so if MS thinks it can sweep this under the rug, they're mistaken.

I own the three majors this go round, just like last round. But next round might play out differently until I'm convinced Microsoft can design a console that doesn't die within a year. That's even with the great titles. I just don't feel like beta testing their hardware again. :)

Sony is in a good position to be a solid contender in most markets, a dominant factor in some others... just like Microsoft. The trick is, did MS burn a ton of goodwill trying to fix their hardware (this in spite of extending the warranty for the RRoD)? Only time will show us.... :)
People always use PS3's online servive as a big slap to M$......many hardcore gamer will take the price tag any day. Sony's service is full of lag most of the time and is lacking on total functionality when you compare the 2.

Also.....when you see movies like The Scorpion King 2 coming direct to DVD for $35.....Blu-Ray is not going to be that big of a factor until those prices come down.

With all that said, you cant go wrong if you do get a PS3 and when they roll out more titles.....It will be a great system to get for most.
I have both, and I haven't noticed any significant lag.

On PS3, it really depends upon the game. PSN isn't truly a centralized network like XBL. Most publishers have their own network for their own games. Some networks are great and are on dedicated servers, some are P2P put together sloppy. Saying PSN is full of lag is going way too far. I could say some games are full of lag on XBL while some are fine.

A hardcore gamer would realize that at this point both are really similar in terms of online play. Once that dashboard update comes thing will change but for now they are pretty similar. If this were a year ago that argument would be without a doubt true. Lag? Ever play Halo 3? Holy balls I lagged like no other in that game. I never lagged in Resistance. I think it just depends on the individual game.

Actually it's all up to the user's connection on the 360. Whoever is hosting determines how much lag there is. The 360 is all p2p so make sure the host has a good connection. The PS3 on the other hand has dedicated servers this is good and bad because if the game goes under, the servers go offline and nobody can play, but good in that they are just machines running this game so there is no laggy p2p.
funny if you are playing a EA game on Xbox or PS3 you are actually on EA's server
That's because EA is so big they can tell Microsoft to eat a dick and Microsoft will gladly open their mouths. What's microsoft going to do? Tell them NO U PLAY BY OUR RULES? EA will lliterally laugh in their face and say NO MADDEN FOR YOU THEN.

you are horribly uninformed.....there are a few games on the 360 which have dedicated servers (frontlines is one of them)....MS has nothing saying that a developer/whatever can't have their own servers...the only thing they have to do is make it work through xbox live...thats all...EA having servers is EA's thing and nothing else...MS doesnt give 2 shits..

EA isn't so big they can tell MS to do anything...EA is peanuts compared to MS...EA needs the 360...there aren't enough people out there to buy EA titles on the Wii and PS3 alone to keep EA's head above water....why do you think all these exclusive developers are jumping ship to the 360?

please do yourself a favor and have some sort of knowledge about what you are talking about before you open your mouth

I'd say the same right back to you. Yes Microsoft may have more money then EA, but as a game publisher, EA holds a hell of a lot more weight then Microsoft does. Do you have any idea how much Microsoft would suffer if EA up and doesn't publish their yearly sports games on the 360? They would go down the shitter faster then pogs. EA had a hand in killing the dreamcast simply by not publishing shit for it. And YES EA can tell Microsoft to suck their nuts simply because of Madden. You think a company is going to risk pissing off EA and losing Madden on their console?

And Fun fact. The PS3 make more money for the EA then the 360. The PS2 makes almost equal that of the 360. Here's a link

PS3 made EA 139 mil
360 made EA 81 mil
PS2 made EA 79 mil

what's that again? This is for Q1 2009.
And the PS3 making you feel like an adult? How the hell does a console make you feel like an adult?
the same way a wii makes you feel like a kid again
I cared about bc before getting my ps3 in jan, but since then, i have only played one of my older games on it, and that was not too long after getting my system. I currently have 49 ps3 games, not including psn games, i don't have the time to go back and play the last gen games i own.
LOL, do they even have 49 games worth owning?

exactly..the Xbox 360 makes up 10% of EA's net revenue and 22.7% of their console revenue...if EA said fuck the 360 then 22.7% of all console sales would disappear along with 10% of the total company's revenue. EA can't afford that. Thank you for helping me make my point.
I think the PS3 will remain in 3rd place this gen... not GC 3rd place from last gen, more like very very close to 2nd and both nowhere on the radar from 1st... There's a good chance by the time the next xbox gets announced it'll pass the 360 but then it'ld be what do you consider current/next gen?

It's #1 thing it has over current consoles is Bluray, but after the format war, all those preaching Blu seemed to have gone in hiding. Sad too... I was fine with 2 formats, but realized after the Warner announcement that it might be a lot better for just 1 format, and now... here we are and Bluray is slowly growing, far slower than anyone expected.

It's a great console, that's all that matters. I doubt though we'll see anything our of the GT5/MGS4 caliber again. Costs just too much and return on investment isn't there at the moment
you bring up an interesting point, if devs don't develop the great games, nobody will buy the console and if nobody buys the consoles, the devs won't work on those high budget, high caliber games.
Outdated technology sells well... ask Wii

As long as the games are there, the platform will stay, honestly, if 360 does go to a newer console, I'd think that Sony should immdiately price drop the PS3, and add the new slim design. But rushing out a PS4 is useless, keep what you have on the market. Sony just can't afford to have another lackluster launch, so they need to be really cautious with their release of the PS4. Price wise, developer wise, and design wise.
outdated tech DOES NOT sell well. The wii sells well not because of the actual gaming but because of the 'promise' of holistic gaming.
I'm in the cell lasting 8 years or more camp. If MS releases a new console with only either Blu-ray (or something equivalent) or downloading Sony will be laughing and just say they were already a generation ahead. Also graphics look so good now the I think few people are really jumping for the next generation.

Finally, Winning the US now shouldn't be Sony's concern. With the terrible value of the dollar they do significantly better on every game and system they sell in Europe and Japan than America. I still have no doubt the American Wii shortage is partially due to the weak dollar giving nintendo no reason to send systems they could sell elsewhere here.
everyone knows these japanese companies send their products elsewhere to avoid the dollar. There would be NO WAY we would ever be short of any console if our currency was up to par.

No. If EA quit making games for the 360, their fans "or mindless spawn" would move to the PS3 by default. Do you have any idea how many people buy the same thing year after year? EA could afford it easily, but like gamestop, they just love guzzling any penny they can. If EA left the 360, it would be like Final Fantasy 13 going multiplatform. Except magnified by a hundred. Though it pains me to say it, EA does have it's faithful and they will move to any system that DOES have EA games if they aren't on their current console.

I'm going to chime in and quickly ask...

if microsoft charges like $15/mo for XBL, that's ~150 million dollars a month offering a service they could give away free, why doesn't Sony charge?

Or if sony doesn't care about that big chunk of change, then why do people allow MS to nickel and dime them when sony doesn't charge for internet gaming?

second, why are DVD movies $15 but blurays are like $40, that's recockulous. WTF? It's the same damn movie only one is printed on a 5 cent disc and the other is printed on a 50 cent disc. It's not like it's harder to make a blueray film, or that they have to do more work publishing it, they simply export the movie to the blueray with less compression and that's pretty much all. Who in their right mind would pay that much for a shitty film? I can't watch any movie more than twice, even movies like dark knight. Renting is one thing but buying, never. Personally, I go to the movies when something interests me and hardly watch movies at home. I'll play games or do browse youtube, but TV or DVD movies don't interest me too much.

Does MS make any $$$ on the $199 xbox? Does Sony make any $$$ on the $399 ps3?

I admire MS for being able to offer next gen tech with a free 512mb card and free MS points for $199. This can get a lot of poor people involved in next gen ESPECIALLY since RROD was cured with the new chipset. On top of that the games are top notch.

this entry price point will definitely make MS lead this holiday season as the preferred tech gift for kids, teens and adults. I know a lot of my friends were goign to buy a PSP or Wii this holiday season but have reconsidered simply because of the price drop. I imagine a sizable portion of the population will do the same.

I can't wait to see those damn numbers, 360 arcade is sold out at all my local BM stores.

as for ps3, i'm only looking forward to GOW3

I seriously think a mod needs to come in here and tell the fanboys to get back to their own corners, wait for the bell and come out swinging. As soon as I saw this topic, I could tell it was gonna degenerate into a series of arguments, with barbs being thrown like 'durrrrr Da Tree Sixty has a 70% failure rate. RROD!!!!!' and so on.

To quote Rodney King: "Can't we all get along?"

Why does one system HAVE to be better than another? Why can't we all just play the games our systems we have has and be content?

That happened to me in the PS1 generation. I bought my system and about 2 weeks to a month later, the price fuckin' dropped. I was PISSED.
I second this. Can we get a mod lock on this thread? It seems pointless. All I want is platform agnostic multiplayer gaming. I should be able to play w/ 360/pc buddies on my ps3.

does anyone think the more MS and Sony push movies and media, the more time people will spend watching movies and less time buying and playing games on the platforms?

then how do you feel when you pay $60 for a game that's $20 two months later?
