I'm going to try and find a new arrangement for it today. It was loud from the moment I cut it on for the first time.

I'm going to post a video to clarify this later, but does anyone know what this problem could be? I'm copying this from a PM, so it may sound funny:
Hmm, yeah a video might help. What model did you have again? I don't think I've seen anything weird with the controller at all, and it's quiet compared to my 360. Right now it's comparable to my (broken) Wii though it got a bit louder during the summer.

I've also never had any problems with PS3 noise. Mine makes noises when the hard drive is loading but nothing that's even close to the 360 and I barely even hear the fan.

I usually play my xbox 360 and PS3 using tv audio and whenever the kids arent around or I watch a movie I use my Yamaha YSP-800 soundbar

I have my Xbox 360 hooked up via VGA to my tv and optical to my Yamaha soundbar...I have sound out of either my tv or soundbar any given time from my 360

My PS3 is hooked up to the tv via HDMI and the soundbar with optical...i just had to switch the PS3 from HDMI audio to Optical Audio in the settings to get it to play through the soundbar

is there any way to have the PS3 putting audio out on both the HDMI and optical cables at the same time so that I only have to switch PS3 settings everytime i want to use my soundbar?

My DS3 stopped working. I have a feeling Resistance 2 broke the controller. I was playing some co-op last night when all of a sudden it said "controller has been disconnected, please reconnect, bla bla bla" on the screen. The PS button would not respond at all. I plugged it in the USB cable. Still nothing. It's unresponsive. I plugged the Sixaxis into the USB cable and it connected with the system. MY DS3 is basically broke. It won't work!! How do I fix this? I didn't drop it on the floor or anything. It just stopped working when I was playing. This is total bullshit.

I would take the battery out and wait a minute or two, then reconnect the controller via usb. See if that might help.

How do you take the battery out? Will I void any sort of warranty or anything? If the thing is screwed up I'll send it to Sony. No way in hell I'm going to pay another $60 for a controller.

You can do it, but it's tricky. Well, what's tricky is getting it put back together right (I tried it, to make sure that the controller works without the battery, which it does).

I'd say it's too big of a hassle for a lot of people to want to mess with. (I had to take it back apart again 'cause I didn't get it put together right the first time...I'm also disturbed by how flimsy the little staple like spring things are that give the L/R2 buttons their resistance).

You might as well go with 1.3. It's only a $1.30. The benefits are really only for blu-ray movies you won't notice any with games I don't think.
What benefits are their to Bluray with 1.3? What's better 1.3 or 1.3a?
Your ears can't tell the difference; only your ego.

I have a non-HDMI receiver but an HDMI enabled TV. Can I run an HDMI cable from the PS3 to my TV for the picture and use an optical cable for sound? Are there any disadvantages to this? Someone was trying to tell me that due to compression on a blu-ray disc it wouldn't sound right unless I went through an HDMI receiver or something...

Also, is HDMI the only way to get a 1080 picture out of the PS3 for blu-ray? I'm probably getting a PS3 but for use mainly as a blu-ray player...

My TV does 1080i only but that should be good enough for blu-ray, right? I didn't get a new TV but I have a strong feeling that my mother bought me a PS3 for Christmas for some weird reason... Lots of very odd questions out of the blue. Anyway, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world as long as I could watch movies in 1080i because I'm planning on a new TV eventually (late 2009 or 2010).
I have HDMI running the picture to my TV and optical running sound to my receiver. I haven't had any problems with the sound of blu-rays.
Awesome. That's what I wanted to know.

You shouldn't have any problems with that setup. Keep in mind that the PS3 does not come with a HDMI cable but you can get them VERY cheap from monoprice.com. You *may* be able to use component cables to get 1080i from your PS3 to your TV, but really, why bother when HDMI will work just fine? The PS3 should be able to detect what will work for you and the interface is pretty easy to navigate when setting up.

If I can get 1080i over component I'm probably going to do that - connecting to the HDMI port on my TV would mean I have to remove it from the wall which scares the hell out of me. Of course I could *accidentally* drop it and then 1080p here I come!
quick question, how do I get my sig to show up, it's my PSN gamertag from playstation underground???
I saw you can do that now, but I don't know what it actually lists. Plus I wouldn't have my 360 one up, 'cause there's not way to prevent it from listing your "star" rating, which for me is of course 3, since I don't pay for online, so I get these asinine comments about "oh hahaha you must be a real jerk online!!!".

It doesn't list anything really. Just your avatar, your umm... gamer tag , and a short little saying you set on the PS3.

Quick question for anyone who has upgraded their hard drive and backed up their original drive on an external hard drive. Were they any issues? Did you lose anything in the transfer over? I thought I could swing 60GB, because I play most of my games on the 360, but with Home and a lot of good games to the PSN, I think I will upgrade, considering you can get 2.5" drives for pretty cheap.

OK I need help getting the Sony Blutooth headset to work with an IPhone. I've tried both my original IPhone and my manager's 3G one and it won't work on either one. I turned on the headset and then started the Blutooth search on the IPhone, also set the IPhone to search first then turned on the phone (which is what the instruction manual said to do) and that hasn't worked either.

I'm not doing this near my PS3 and the only device the headset has been paired to is the PS3 (via USB so I got the HQ mode when using it on the PS3.) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have to put the headset in pairing mode for your phone to find it. Hold the power and mute button at the same time and it will start flashing between the power light and mic light and then your phone will be able to find it. It should ask for a code once it finds it which is 0000.

Thank you you're awesome!

I got an update for y'all. I'm still getting the no video issue with Youtube, but there is a workaround. Bring up the page's URL and add &fmt=18 to the end of it. In addition to being (usually) higher quality, I haven't found a video I can't see when using that trick.

I just tried it on 'Private Dancer', and it works! Thanks for that tip. :D

I hooked my PS3 up to my friend's HDTV with component and we were able to get a maximum of 1080i from it - for 1080p you'll need an HDMI cable.

For my setup, I have my PS3 going to my TV over HDMI and the audio going to my stereo via rca cables - works perfectly fine for me. However, do keep in mind that all HDTVs have some lag, so unless you always play in game mode, your picture will probably be ~50 ms behind the sound. Not that I've ever noticed a problem, but if you play Rock Band or Guitar Hero you may have to calibrate it first.

Uhh, not necessarily. You can get 1080p through component cables, but you have to have a TV that supports it. Many don't, but there are also some that do. I know because mine does. It is how I played my pre HDMI 360 in 1080p before I had my VGA cable and how I played the few PS3 games that support 1080p before my monoprice cable arrived.

However, to upscale DVDs or show BluRay in high definition you have to have HDMI because of the copy protection (HDCP). Using the component cables it locks DVDs down to 480p.

Also, a note to the original poster who wants to use HDMI for video and optical for audio, this is something you have to manually choose in the settings. If the PS3 ever auto-configures it will ignore your optical cable and by default send the sound through HDMI with the video. (it will auto-configure if you hold down the power button on boot-up). Alternatively, if you have an HDMI cable plugged into it, but currently have your video set to display through analog cables, EVERYTIME you boot it will ask you if you want to switch to the HDMI cable. If you say yes, then when it auto-configures it will once again default to your HDMI for video and sound and ignore your previous choice to use optical cable for sound.

Also, if you already own the cables try your PS3 with both component and HDMI cables. In my case, the menu and all 1080 capable content (i.e. Blu-rays, upscaled DVDs, games like Virtua Tennis that support 1080p) looked better through the HDMI cable. However, games like Oblivion, Resistance, and the Orange Box which ONLY support 720p actually looked much better using the component cable. So I keep both sets of inputs plugged in, and switch it to component in the PS3's settings when playing the 720p games.

My 60 GB won't accept discs at all. It's out of warranty plus I lost the receipt..so I decided to take the system apart and see if I could figure out what was wrong with it. There is definately no other disc in the drive. I can insert a disk and slide it all the way in manually but it still won't load the disc. When inserting a disc it makes no noises what so ever. If I hit eject it beeps and that's it, again no noises (i.e. motors running, clicking if something was stuck, etc.). I am going to try to fix this myself as I don't feel I should have to deal out a couple hundred dollars more to fix something I already paid several hundred for. I found this site that has parts for the drive, but wasn't sure exactly what part I needed. Whats everyone think? Here's the site with the parts: http://www.consoleshop.com/home.php?cat=308

If none of these are the correct parts, anyone know where I can get the rigt part?

From my understanding, if you use optical for audio, you are limited to 5.1 compressed (Dolby Surround or DTS) or 2.0 uncompressed (linear PCM). A high-end HDMI-capable receiver can handle up to uncompressed 7.1 TrueHD. There are some Blu-ray discs that have both an uncompressed track and a compressed one. It is possible for the two mixes to differ. I've read that people have noticed a difference in loudness, for instance. So your friend wasn't wrong or full of it, but unless you have a burning desire for uncompressed 7.1 sound and the actual speaker setup to enjoy it, using optical with the PS3 works perfectly fine.

What's the best way to get pictures and music into the ps3? I burned a bunch of stuff to a CD from my iTunes to make a custom soundtrack for wipeout HD. It recognized some of the songs but didn't others. All the songs were purchased from iTunes. When I re-burned a disc with just the songs that didn't work then they worked. I also tried using my iPod as a hard disk but that didn't work. Just wondering what the best way to import stuff is.

Thanks
Cigarl

Songs purchased through iTunes have DRM attached to them and will only play through iTunes or iPods.

As for putting pictures and music into the PS3, I just use a 2GB SD card, however not all PS3s have card readers built into it.

I'm embarassed to admit it, but I had my PS3 for a year before I discovered the media sharing function. If your PC and PS3 are hooked up to the same modem or router it should be real easy to do (search for a how-to because it will explain it a million times better than I can). I recommend TVersity as the software of choice if you go this route.

To get to the point, I had 18gb of mp3s I copied over to my PS3 and it was relatively painless to do it this way. It took some time but worked out flawlessly. Now if only the PS3 could do playlists > 50 songs.
