PS3 to $299 rumor? (OP Updated: SD links)
I've never spet more than $15 on a HD DVD disc, and I'm sure a lot of people on here haven't either.
$15?? That's too rich for my blood. Now, if they drop them to $5-10 and the PS3 or other HD players to under $100, then maybe. Otherwise, I'll stick to watching the movies in the theaters or buy them on the cheap, older format.

Though, I DO hope that Sony drops it across the board and makes those 60gb models even cheaper, since I've seen a few round me. Hell, since they were discontinued, I was kinda hoping they'd clearance them at some cheaper price, but no such luck, I suppose.

Where can you buy a new DVD for 5-10 bucks, besides the Dollar Store?

I am a loyal "Wii60" Fanboy and even this has grabbed my attention. For $300 I would seriously considering buying one by Xmas.
I just got my PS3 40gb last week on Monday. I'll be ticked if this happens now rather than summer time like originally expected...
Yeah its called a price guarantee.... unless you'd be pissed it was in white and not black.
I'm seriously wondering about this because my local Best Buy has sold their entire stock of PS3s without getting more. Maybe there IS a new SKU coming out at a cheaper pricepoint.
Thats surprising since my local BB has too many PS3s to count, and they got them in for black friday and only a dent has been made into the stack.

I would say the stack is about 4.5-5ft high/10-12ft wide by 8ft long. Half being 40gbs and the other 80gbs.
Where can you buy a new DVD for 5-10 bucks, besides the Dollar Store?
During the BB/CC promo sales where they have multiple older movies which I may have missed or liked in the theaters enough to WANT on DVD for $3.99-$4.99.

Other than that, from a local game shop which also sells DVDs and routinely has some newer releases for $4-5 each.

It doesn't matter where I get them, as long as they work, are in good shape and are UNDER $10 in most cases.

I'm not really here to debate or argue the good or bad points of BR over DVD. All I know is, for the little amount I use my current standard def DVD player, $30 per movie would be a waste, as would $300 or over for a new type of player.

If Sony drops ALL of the models to $299 across the board, I'll really consider buying one. But, if they only discount the cheapest one(40gb), I'll wait till they actually start clearancing out old stock of PS3s wherever they may still be lingering.

Look who it is with the wishful thinking FTW!

If they made a Ferrari for $11, I'd buy that, too!

C'mon, dude. Just sit and wait for the 80GB (or its equivalent) to hit $300, and stop acting like it's going to happen tomorrow (or should happen tomorrow).
Add the white PS3 to this rumor. :D

http://gamerumor.blogspot.com/2008/01/299-ceramic-white-playstation-3.html

40GB White Playstation 3 - $299.99
40GB Black Playstation 3 - $299.99
80GB Black Playstation 3 - $449.99

I still don't think any of this is true, but people seem to be running with it.
that's a damn good pricing structure. Sony needs to sell well during the slow months.

I think that the price drop will most likely occur when the 5 movies free deal stops; which should be around Feb/Mar 08. Technically, you were paying 100 dollars for the 5 movies and 300 for the PS3 (40gb).. so when the Sony doesn't subsidize the cost of the 5 free movies anymore, they might as well take it off the PS3. During chrismas they needed Blu ray sales - 5 free movies, 5 blu ray disc sales for Sony. Wtih that deal coming to a close, apply the money off directly to the PS3 cause now Sony needs PS3 sales.

On the IGN board, posters believe that this offer by Sony to drop the PS3 price as a trade to have Warner Brothers drop their support for HD-DVD to get them Blu-ray exclusive. This kinda makes sense as all of a sudden they dump HD for Blu-ray earlier this month suprising Toshiba and other HD backers.

I've only ever bought one console @ $300, that being a year from launch PS2. I thought it was too much to pay for a console, but I was bored and didn't want to plunk down the $$$ on high speed internet for my woefully slow computer(my only other source of entertainment back in 2001 other than television) or I doubt I'd have even bought the PS2 I did back then.

To me $99-$149 is the 'right price' for me for ANY console or major consumer electronics. As for the 80 gb model, I'd rather not buy that if I don't have to, since I'd like hardware BC if possible. So hopefully, the PS3 will continue to sell slowly and those 2 60gb models I've seen locally will continue to languish collecting dust until I'm ready to buy.

If not, then I guess I'll just suck it up and wait till the 'right price' mentioned above is hit by the 40gb model and keep my PS2 for playing my older games.

Either way, best of luck with your PS3s, I just hope that Sony's problems from last gen don't soon pop up on your machines.
During chrismas they needed Blu ray sales - 5 free movies, 5 blu ray disc sales for Sony.
The rest of your post makes sense, but this is 100% wrong. Discs only count as a sale if they are individually rung up at the point of sale, because Nielsen only reports retail sales. Spider-Man 3/Talladega Nights don't count because they're part of another SKU. Mail in Rebate discs don't count because they never enter the retail chain. The only "free" discs that can pump up the numbers are things like BOGOs, because the free disc is scanned at checkout.

On a related note, both the 40GB and 80GB are in my Amazon Gold Box deals today. If I ordered one of them and it dropped in price on the 28th, Amazon does price adjusting of their own sales, right?

Still not sure if I should try to hunt down a 60 GB PS3, as there are games I'd like to catch up on, but knowing that I'd be SoL if it broke isn't a comforting idea.

Amazon's great about price adjustments.

I was in the same boat you are - I decided that the warranty was more important for me. I'm hoping that software emulation will be possible for BC eventually. I'm not holding my breath but the PS3 is a pretty amazing piece of hardware.

Unless your crammed for space buy a PS2 for the Ps2 games. The Ps3 will play all PS1 games and the PS3 games. I mean PS2,s ar a dime a dozen anymore. Why put the extra wear on your PS3 unless your totally after the uspacling factor.

Not everyone wants to have another system hooked up to the TV if they don't have to. Not everyone wants to drag the PS2 out of the closet when they want to play GTA3.

I had a PS2 since the launch of the PS2, and sold it along with all the games I owned for PS/PS2 when the PS3 was announced since it had full backwards compatibility. I didn't buy the PS3 at launch since there was no games I was really interested in, the price was too high, and I didn't need a blue ray player.

Now that the price is down a bit (maybe more if the rumor is true) I'm looking at a PS3 since a few games I'd play are out, Blue Ray seems to be the format that won, and I can afford a new system (maybe lol). Hunting down a 60 GB PS3 seems like a good idea until you think about it possibly breaking. Since they aren't made anymore, I'd probably get stuck with a 40 GB PS3, which would suck, since it's not what I paid for.

As for why I don't buy a PS2 for PSOne/PS2 games, my TV unit already has a 360, Wii, and HD Cable Box. Putting a PS3 there is already more than enough shit on the unit, I don't need to try squeezing in a PS2 (it won't even fit unless I stack the Wii on something), nor do I want to pull it out of the closest and hookup the connections anytime I want to play something.

So basically you sold your PS2 and all its games what 2-3 years ago... how have you made it without playing those PS2 games so far? I mean it obviously isnt that important. For me I rarely have time to replay old games, they have to be pretty spectacular for that. Apparently no one complaining here has two tv's. I have another entire set up in the basement for the old games, so its not an issue of space for me. I just think its totally foolish to spend $100 more and wait forever to get in on the PS3 because you want to play games from 5 years ago on it, instead of the system it was designed for (PS2).

Just get another TV or dig the damn thing out once in a while. You could even go as far as leaving the hookups there and putting the Ps2 in a drawer, pull it out plug it in.

Anyway Just my opinion. I went through the same thought process a few months back.

I don't want to play every single game I owned. I decided to sell all of them though since I figured the price would never be higher for the games, and I could repurchase them cheaper at a later time if I wanted to play them. Not only that, but I obviously didn't play every PS2 game, so there are a good number of great games to play still.

I'd also like to say that a lack of BC is not a deal breaker for me. When FFXIII comes out, I couldn't care less if the PS3 only played FFXIII, I'd still buy it. My main problem is that I sort of want the PS3 now, but there isn't anything I'm dying to play (there are a few games I'm interested in, but aren't system sellers to me), so I can't really justify a purchase even though I know I'll get it eventually. Being able to play PSOne/PS2 games would make the plunge a ton easier as I could enjoy a backlog of those games while I waited for something I really wanted to play (FFXIII).

If the system drops to $300, all this talk won't matter, as I have no problem paying $300 for it.

Maybe if this rumor spreads far enough sony will need to drop the price because otherwise sales will plummet with everyone waiting for the lower price to buy the system. Sometime we shoould start a cag rumor about some system price drop and spread it as far as we can to see if it makes a drop happen.

OR, the same thing that happened last time(Speedy got sued) could happen, but to a different person for 'leaking' the information.

As long as these sources don't mention any one source in particular, I think we'll be ok. I just would hate to see someone else's life get messed up due to this.

Wow, peg me a bigtime NOOB. I had no idea that all PS3s are fully backwards compatible with PS1 games, and completely passed over this info initially. The official site won't let me use the 40 GB system as an option when trying to find out which PS1 games work though. Where would I find a list?

My guess is this rumor got started when people learned about the "new" model that's being launched, and someone just kind of made it up or guessed. (That new model being the white one.)

And on that note...I really wish there was a white 80GB. I like the look much more. I mean I think the Playstation 3 is kind of dorky, especially with chrome :cold: but the white one looks kind of slick.

That's awesome! I've wanted an 80GB to show up for weeks now, but all I ever get is a Playstation 2 or Xbox.

If I do have a PS3 show up, it'll probably be the 40GB model

How much would it be with the golden box price?

40 GB is $379.99 and 80 GB is $474.99 with gold box prices. I pay no tax or shipping either, so thats why its a crazy deal.

I just got done finally testing out a bunch of ps3 games and i am underwhelmed. The ps2 was a much bigger leap in graphics and game design. I might buy one when games are 20 dollars and the system is 200.

As long as you were playing in hi def, you got the full picture, otherwise i dont see what isnt impressive. I think my Xbox 360 games look amazing at 720p, im more "wowed" at graphics now than last gen. I would now love to get a ps3 pending a price drop for the other amazing games coming to it, blu ray alone makes me want a ps3. I can understand it may not be impressive enough for the price in your opinion, but its definitely a huge change imo.

Agreed. The change in graphics between Xbox 360 vs PS2 or Xbox is leaps beyond.

I need to pick me up a PS3 soon also. I have to see first if these rumors are true or not :D

That wouldn't happen. They wouldn't clear out perfectly good stock in order to make a little room. They could easily just ship them out to other stores and not lose as much money.

Thats what this whole price drop is. I didn't make this up. This was the WHOLE RUMOR is about. Announcing a new console on the 28th that won't be out for sale til the end of Feb. You act like no company has ever done this before.

Like I said, I'm not too sure about the whole rumor but I hope it is true. We will just have to wait and find out what Jan 28th brings.
