PSN has returned. What freebie games are you getting?
I'd still like to watch it. Hopefully somebody throws it up on YouTube.
There wasn't much to watch at all. All their slides were done in Japanese, except for one where they "explained" how the hackers got into their system (There was a security vulnerability in one of the servers). Everything else was effectively put into the blog post posted previously. As for the translators, it really wasn't worth listening to them.

Oh Ok. I was just interested in the wording Kaz used during the presentation, but it sounds like it wasn't even in English.

Good PR move by Sony, but it's kind of lame that people won't get to keep any of the games tied to PlayStation Plus, or even get in on the deals if the Store won't be fixed until possibly the end of the month.

Like I've said before, the only compensation they need to provide is making PSN the most jacked up, secure network out there. That's it. That's all I want.

Can't believe that Sony is still claiming that there's no evidence that CCs were taken. They just need to take full responsibility already.
Yay~
I get a free month of PSN+ and then I'll have to pay MONEY to continue using any free content that I got during that time! =DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Even the avatars and themes?
But if one never uses or downloads the PS+ or whatever in the first place, then why would one have to turn off auto renewal at all?:whistle2:#

Just like their shitware updates, I suppose I can't just opt out of the portions of this I don't want, right?
Because you'll be PS+ by default? I don't even know how accounts without cards attached to them handle services that would generally have renewal on, so it would at least require a quick check to be sure.

I have to wonder if the free PS+ service won't begin until the store is up since that's the only way to get that stuff, unless they plan to use auto download to push it out.
Even the avatars and themes?
I believe avatars n themes you're allowed to keep, even on the fully paid PSN+, but any 'free' games you get during your sub to the service are made invalid or whatever after it lapses.

But that's why I DON'T WANT the fuckin' shit cuz I know after the month is out anything I 'get' from it is no longer mine. So unless they plan on just giving out a full game like Pixeljunk Monsters or something else NOT tied to PSN+, then they can shove the free month up their ass.

Just gimme the FREE PSN back and let me play games online, since I have a feeling they're gonna use this as an excuse to phase out the free PSN if enough shmucks pay for a sub AFTER the free month.

The way they put it...they consider there to be two aspects of the breach...the Credit Card stuff, and all the personal info/passwords/etc. Since the credit card information was encrypted and they could find no trace of the credit card info as being accessed, they said the likelihood of that info getting taken was much lower.

It's one of those cases where it'd be much easier to prove that something did get taken out than if it didn't.

According to the Blog post, the PS+ and other stuff are just the components that will be constant throughout all territories. There's also going to be "selected...content for free download", presumably outside of PS+.

Then don't downlad that stuff, as nobody's forcing you to download anything. Just check if you need to turn off auto-renewal and go back to playing whatever you want on PSN.

I really had to fuck with my buffer settings and options to get this Sony stream to not lag like a mofo. Is this still live?

Gotta say, as someone who doesn't game online that the PSN coming back online without the Playstation Store is kinda pointless.

But that's just me.

Watch it be stuff I already own if there is any free stuff outside of the PSN+. I don't really care if there is or isn't free shit aside from the free PSN being back.

Ah. How I wish Sony took this approach to their firmware updates. Don't want this feature, don't download that part of the fw update.

As for auto renewal, how exactly are they gonna charge me for PSN+ when I don't even have a card on file for them to charge?;)

Lock down your account until you've added enough funds to afford the charge? I doubt that they'd actually do it, but you never know. That's how they do it Xbox Live if the card on file is expired or lacks the funds to pay for the renewal rather than downgrading the account to Silver/Free status.

Interesting post from Mark MacDonald of the total number of PSN accounts in every region:
yvfye.jpg

United States 31,140,307

I'm wondering how many of those are actually still being used. Or are just dummy accounts for random shit.

I know I can claim at least 3 of those accounts.

Europe, United States, Japan, and Hong Kong here.

I actually wanted to create a South Korean account a few weeks ago just for the hell of it but forgot to do so. Guess I might have to miss out on a free copy of DJ Max or whatever now.
Any idea if forcing everyone to change thier PW could somehow have any affect on Gameshared stuff?
If you go to the gameshare thread you'll see people are already planning on what they are going to do.

They really should give people the option to change their PSN name, considering that was also compromised. It may not seem like a big deal, but it would help. It's a feature that should have been there day one, and now's the perfect time to add it.
If you go to the gameshare thread you'll see people are already planning on what they are going to do.
Seems like they are mainly talking about someone actually stealing the account. Im talking about if Sony actually de-activated them somehow, or forces you to reactivate the account

I like my PSN name, it's just about the same as the one I use on CAG and I didn't make it while under the influence. If people want to change their PSN name(s) because they're unhappy that they chose to be known as some silly shit while they were stoned or drunk, then that's their problem.

If someone wants to change their name so badly, then they should do like I think they do on XBL. If you wanna change your name, you gotta pay.

Um, no. I'm talking about for personal reasons, since people might use that screen name as their email, account log ins, etc. I don't think people should be charged 10 bucks for it either.

I agree with paying to change the name. Because if the option was free, people would abuse it left and right, thus defeating the purpose of a block list.

So we'll all get 30 days of PS+, but we won't be able to do anything with it because the Store will be down during that specific time period?

Sounds like Sony.

They might just give us the trail once they actually give us access to that specific section of PSN. Everything's rolling out one at time by the sound of it.

I thought they said later in the month?

Whatever. I guess I can get a free theme or something. Maybe spend the remaining $1.74 I have on an Avatar bundle.

Nice, first this and now I get an e-mail from Best Buy saying something about one of their vendors accessing their database and getting customer info. Although they say in their message that it was just e-mail addresses that were exposed.

So as compensation for the possibility of fighting ID theft for years we each get $4-6 in "store credit" (1yr of PSN+ = $50 / 12 $4.17 or 3 Month service = $18 / 3 = $6). Sounds about right Sony...

Actually, it's possible to make it to where it's linked to some non-publicly shown unique identifier per that account. So if someone changed their name, they would still be blocked. It's all about how you set up the relational databases. If done right, it could show the persons new name and what their original blocked name was side by side.

They would more than likely e-mail everyone a code for one month of Ps+.

I don't get what a month of PS+ is going to do for regular PSN users... once the month is up, and they go back to regular PSN users, they won't be able to play the free games anymore. (Unless Sony makes some special arrangement for the content to not expire).

A free month of PSN+? Are they going to offer shovelware for free on that month? Or will I get something great like Final Fantasy VII for free?

They should have offered $20 credit towards anything in the PSN store to compensate for the hack of private info.

The XBOX 360 has the infamous "RROD". Is there an acronym for this outage / hack? Sony Hack a Shack, PSN = PWNED Servers Nationally.... I am sure there are some creative folks out there.

Comparing a hardware design failure that effected users for years to a network outage that will last for 2 weeks is pretty silly. Especially since there have been times when Xbox live was down and user data was stolen from Xbox Live users back in 2007. This isn't unique to Sony.

So instead of compensating everybody to the tune of $462M in services you want them to spend $1.54B directly out of their pocket. Right, I'll call Sony and have them do that right now. Sony is a victim of a crime as much as everybody else, yet they're funding almost a half billion as compensation when my health insurance company that had laptops stolen with more of identity information sent a letter and gave me nothing other than notification.

I swear people bitching need to get in touch with reality.

I was kinda thinking the same thing. Sony has two agendas here for sure. One is to make nice and the other is maybe bring in some new plus members in the future. Now if they wanted to do something like that, I think 3 months would've been better, once newer members seen what was offered they might keep their service.
The psn will be down till march 27 2012
Edit: My bad. I need to learn to read. =P

Not sure if its old news or not, but I just tried to download the demo's I had in

download management and they are downloading now. I didn't think of trying it before, but it might not mean anything.

So how secure is this new system going to be if they were in such a rush to get it back up? Don't these things take months to build? Unless Sony knew what needed to be fixed for months (which they did), and are just now getting around to it.

As one guy said. They take several months to test. I don't think they rushed it exactly, but I know they won't be able to test it much before it is put up. Makes me wonder if this will happen again someday.

Screw free stuff - don't care about that crap in the long run.

They should offer a year of free credit monitoring even though they "think no credit card info was compromised"

Right.

My guess is that, at least for the next few months it'll go to a Wii like setup where you have to manually input your information every time you deposit money, including your CC # and address until they feel confident in their ability to restore the status quo.

While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, the company is committed to helping its customers protect their personal data and will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. The implementation will be at a local level and further details will be made available shortly in each region.

The company also expedited an already planned move of the system to a new data center in a different location that has been under construction and development for several months. In addition, PS3 will have a forced system software update that will require all registered PlayStation Network users to change their account passwords before being able to sign into the service. As an added layer of security, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation, a critical step to help further protect customer data.
