PSN has returned. What freebie games are you getting?

I have to laugh at all of this overreacting. Listen, Sony will do the right thing. It cannot afford to not do the right thing. I feel for those who use it as their only system and play online all day. But here is food for thought- Everyone can finally play their campaign and single player modes in their games. Imagine that? :D
This is yet another reason the Ps3 is the 360's stepchild. I'm going to trade/sell Crysis 2 and Homefront instead of playing their stupid waiting game.

Barring a PSN card you can also get a certain type of gift card that acts as a debit/credit card. The mall out here sells gift cards that people used to purchase with stolen credit cards and then further convert those gift cards into store specific gift cards. Banks and AMEX also supply "gift cards" at a cost as well, the mall credit "gift cards" are pretty awesome though. I've used rebate cards from my cell phone purchase as well to refill my PSN wallet.
No reason to go through all of that. If I didn't go down the PSN card route, I'd just issue another virtual CC # for PSN. No reason to waste multiple dollars on a pre-paid debit card to fill it up.
Now that's what I'm worried about. Should I just call my bank to issue me a new debit card with a new card number?
I wouldn't worry about it until it happens. I just made sure that there wouldn't be any possible issue, and it's a quick fix to make another virtual CC # and put it back into PSN.

After getting my CC # compromised on Monoprice.com a year ago, I went to virtual CC #'s for all online use of credit card numbers, one per site.
I think you're all over-reacting.
Selling off my PS3 would be over-reacting. Canceling a virtual CC # that I could replace in a couple of minutes' time to make sure no one gets the use of it, that's not overreacting.

At least I am "lucky" that my credit card that I use on the PSN expired this month, and I haven't bought anything on the PSN since and renewed the information to match the new card. So at least if anything did happen to my number, any attempted charges to it will decline. So from now on, if I do decide to get anything, of which I will likely get Arcana Heart 3 after the PSN goes back up, it will be instant $20 PSN cards on bestbuy.com (to get points towards Gamer Club bonus points). I bring this up because of this twitter post here, talking about potential credit card fraud:

Yesterday my son kept on trying to log on to PSN so he could watch Toy Story 3 on Netflix. After a few trys he was actually able to stream it. I talked with Netflix a few days back and the CS rep said Netflix was disappointed in the PSN being down for so long. Anyways they must have said lets just take care of our customers on PS3 and developed a workaround

I don't know why it works, but it's the weirdest thing. It's making me wonder if these CFW users where getting free Netflix as well.

LOL at seeing a Kevin Butler commercial for SOCOM 4 a few minutes ago "Hey, got any tips for playing SOCOM 4 ?"

Get used to playing the single player mode buddy because PSN ain't comin' back anytime soon!

EDIT: I know this is probably just me but whenever I hear the name Kevin Butler I always think of the former Chicago Bears kicker.

I'm pretty sure Netflix has been working this whole time, you just had to cancel PSN sign-in when Netflix requests it.

I don't see how that can be done since logging into Netflix requires a valid Netflix account (independent of PSN account).
I'm pretty sure Netflix has been working this whole time, you just had to cancel PSN sign-in when Netflix requests it.
Netflix didn't do anything to allow users to stream while PSN is down. It just happen to be that way (PSN connection is not required, but the interface keeps ask you to log into PSN).

I hope the fix is to get rid of the PSN sign on requirement completely (like some games automatically switch to offline mode if you don't sign into PSN when launch the game, EA ACtive 2 for example).

I don't game online very often, but I do communicate with the other PSN users over chats/messages. I use the little system to motivate people to workout online (Zumba and EA Active 2 for now), I miss them and I'm sure they miss me as well :whistle2:( A lot of those folks don't know about online gaming or messaging (they read the subject line only, not the body of the message, lol). So, I can only guess how frustrated they're now trying to figure what's going on. I just hope my inbox will not bombarded with "help me" message when PSN is back

I know it's not a big deal for me to play games offline, but during the past few days, I can't stop wondering how some of my PSN friends doing, what they are up to, etc. PSN is not only a place to game online, but a small community to encourage each other to game on :)

I was curious to know if anyone with mlb.tv accounts are able to log in? or does that require you to be on the psn as well...i would be pissed off if i payed for that service and couldn't use it.

I read somewhere (no link, sorry) that mlb.tv and hulu users cannot sign in, because somewhere along the line, PSN sign in became required in order to access the service. Older, unupdated programs (i.e. Netflix) created before the PSN sign in became mandatory still work.

I'll look into it later for sure. I wasn't really watching the kid intently either. He just kept on try to sign in like any stubborn 9 yo. I AM wondering why the Netflix rep told me I could't stream while PSN is down tho.

I remember that time, it was sporatic and not for the same reasons this situation is. This is very serious from what I have been reading. Wouldn't be surprised it was down for months. From my understanding it went down into the core of the servers and admin accounts and did some damage.
I will be honest with you guys... wouldn't be surprised if they came back with a paid model as playstation plus as the only service for playing online. Might not be a bad idea to them to do this to keep this sort of thing in check. Just my opinion and results may vary, but this situation would tempt them to go to the same model as Live.

Sometimes you get representatives don't know much or told simply what to say (generic responses not to piss anyone off). It's like what the Sony rep said last week "PSN should be back online in few hours or Friday blah blah."

The Hulu Plus thing is the worst part for me, I don't have cable/sat so I use Hulu to watch most stuff lately like getting caught up on House MD, The Office, etc.
Picture quality is fantastic on the PS3, I don't know how they do it. I don't feel like watching on my laptop, I pay for Hulu Plus to watch tv on my big screen, I wish they had a client for the 360 already.

edit: To be fair, Hulu Customer Service was fantastic - I politely inquired about a credit and within 30 minutes they issued me a credit for a week and emailed me that they're nearly done on their 360 app and that it will be out soon.

I for one wouldn't hold it against them if PS+ was the standard. Just make sure that shits got some new security standards, better communication and connections with multiplayer games and downloads, and a legit banning system.

I guarantee it'll cut out a good 80% of the bullshitters by going paid. I'll spend good money for that.

I'd rather be informed than happy about that kind of stuff. Of course the guy did tell me I was SOL streaming too, so I wasn't happy. Thing is I had a bunch of folks over Easter and wanted to stream some kiddie movies for the little ones. They were sorely disappointed . Luckily i still have my old dvd collection.

I have been okay with PSN being down, if they need to fix then fix it Sony. I know you guys are upset that you can't sign in, I have paused from playing PS3 games and focusing on my PS2 backlog on the PS3. I tried doing one thing last Sunday; I brought it cadbury easter eggs to the PS3 so it can revive PSN. I tried signing in and it was loading I though wow its working!? but no it said under maintenance so I just ended up eating the cadbury eggs I offered it. I had a good Easter despite PSN being down.

Day 6 of the PSN Outage: I've lost contact with the others. I'm not sure anyone else is still alive. There seems to be no end to any of this. All I can say is if any of you ever read this. Tell the CAG NHL 11 team that at least we didn't have to lose in the EASHL playoffs again.

In a serious note, some people are being way too dramatic. Rumors are circulating and people are creating their conspiracy theories. Many of which are going to end up false. I heard it was Skynet, anyhow.

I wouldn't either. That would be the most logical step for them. The banning system is a must. Between 10th level hackers and aimbots, this would be a welcome addition. Plus party chat features would be also a must. Then PS+ would be up to snuff.

But there is a way to sum up this scenario:
http://instantrimshot.com/index.php?sound=priceiswrong

lol.

edit- Co-Optimus says Portal 2 has lan, so i'll probably try this out tomorrow.

When researching the lan settings, it looks like there have been some people that were able to use a VPN set-up to establish LAN games over the internet. Might be worth trying out if some of you guys are completely desperate over this.

Update on PlayStation Network and Qriocity

+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. We are currently working to send a similar message to the one below via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. These malicious actions have also had an impact on your ability to enjoy the services provided by PlayStation Network and Qriocity including online gaming and online access to music, movies, sports and TV shows. We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.

We’re working day and night to ensure it is done as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and feedback.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.

All I can say is that I'm glad I deleted my CC info before the shit hit the fan.

My CC info has been removed from my PSN account for as far as I can remember, but still...not the kind of news I was wanting to hear. PS Blog EU is reporting the same thing...does that mean that the personal information of 70 million PSN users may have been compromised?

Don't know how Sony's gonna get out of this one. This is incredibly disappointing.

Bleh, way to go Sony, no PSN for almost a week, and now you got peoples information hacked/possibly stolen.

Wonder if its possible for them to get sued now if someone gets thier credit stolen

But seriously, if you have your Card on the account, should you cancel and get a new one? O_O, my friend is freaking out over this. (Im more worried about having to change all of my damn passwords again)
They say there probably was no CC data taken so I'm not too worried.
I wouldn't trust Sony if they were giving me money to do so.

Yeah, I knew there was something fishy with the PSN from the get go after my CC info was stolen basically as soon as I set it up for PSN right after Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection came out. I go and buy Tekken 5 DR with my CC since they didn't have PSN cards at the time (another Sony blunder), come back to find out my account has been banned/blocked because someone stole the info and I get locked out of/can't play Tekken 5 DR. They still charge me for Tekken 5, which I ended up disputing, but what a bunch of morons. Sony can go fuck themselves over this really. Built a shitty console that the best it can do is provide HD streaming/Netflix.

The latest blog comments are terrifying.

Every other word is "SUE". I'm embarrassed to be an american.

I'm not worried about shit, I have fraud protection. And instant emails for purchases. Plus if they try and charge anything over 0.15 it'll decline because there ain't no monies in it. ::troll face::

And from what I'm hearing Gamestop isn't taking PS3's for trade as of right now. Whammy!

I will say this though, I had Xbox Live a few year back, had a 6th month subscription, and I didn't even have a fucking console! In that time my account got compromised twice, with a password consiting of Upper and Lower Case, and Numbers all scrambled. With in 6 months, my shit was hacked twice.

How many times has my account gotten hacked on PSN after being a customer for 4 years? 0! That's where my loyalties lay as of right now. I trust that they have everything under control, and I seriously doubt anyones account got hacked, They kept mentioning fake credit card numbers and spoofed dev accounts.

thats some fucked up shit. sounds like theyve had security issues for a while now and only bothered to do a proper fix when the shit hit the fan recently. im not worried so much about the cc info since ive only used one 2 times since ive had a ps3 and for the past few years all i used were psn cards. but a person can still do plenty of damage with your real name, address and dob. that really sucks.
