PlayStation(R)Network

===================================

Valued PlayStation(R)Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011,
certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account
information was compromised in connection with an illegal and
unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this
intrusion, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full
and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our
network infrastructure by rebuilding our system to provide you
with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill
as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and
efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident,
we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following
information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country,
email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login,
and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data,
including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip),
and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may
have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your
dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have
been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit
card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have
provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity,
out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit
card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have
been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email,
telephone and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive
information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email,
asking for your credit card number, social security number or other
personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information,
you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation
Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that
you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation
Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or
accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we
encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and
to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information
for those who wish to consider it:
- U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually
from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report,
visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

- We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S.
credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus
place a "fraud alert" on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps
to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can
make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however,
that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you,
it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your
identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others
are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a
fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report,
please contact any one of the agencies listed below:

Experian: 888-397-3742; www.experian.com; P.O. Box 9532, Allen, TX 75013
Equifax: 800-525-6285; www.equifax.com; P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241
TransUnion: 800-680-7289; www.transunion.com; Fraud Victim Assistance Division,
P.O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834-6790

- You may wish to visit the website of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at
www.consumer.gov/idtheft or reach the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or 600 Pennsylvania
Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580 for further information about how to protect
yourself from identity theft. Your state Attorney General may also have advice
on preventing identity theft, and you should report instances of known or
suspected identity theft to law enforcement, your State Attorney General,
and the FTC. For North Carolina residents, the Attorney General can be
contacted at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001; telephone
(877) 566-7226; or www.ncdoj.gov. For Maryland residents, the Attorney
General can be contacted at 200 St. Paul Place, 16th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202;
telephone: (888) 743-0023; or www.oag.state.md.us.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this
incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the
clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes
information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that
additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information.
Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is
our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any
additional questions.

Sincerely,

No wonder PSN has been down for so long, there also moving all of the servers.

Sony has posted an updated PSN outage FAQ on the PlayStation Blog, and while some information it contains seems to reiterate things we already know -- "some services" will return within a week, you should monitor your credit card(s) -- new details have been brought to light.

First off, Sony is "working on a new system software update that will require all users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored." It's also been confirmed that PSN is being physically rebuilt as a result of last week's intrusion. SCEA PR director Patrick Seybold states in the FAQ that the company is "moving our network infrastructure and data center to a new, more secure location, which is already underway."

Also revealed: While "the entire credit card table was encrypted" and there remains "no evidence that credit card data was taken," PSN's personal data table "was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system." Not sophisticated enough, apparently.

People are gonna do and say what they wanna do and say. To me, as long as the PS3's remain more reliable than the 360's and keep getting games I wanna play, then that's all that matters to me.

I agree, but there's a difference between stating an opinion, or hiding behind a tech website and whipping everyone up into a frenzy with questionable information... Well anyway, the whole thing's getting old.
It took like 5 minutes to replace my debit card.
Same.

I told them all about what had happened and was good to go. Took about 5 minutes. I even stopped by a local branch of my bank to get a temporary debit card for the time being.
OMG!! I just checked my bank account and
nothing out of the ordinary

Good going Sony!! :bomb:
I checked mine this morning and I had $2 more than I thought, so thanks Sony!

In retrospect, Sony issuing a new TOS out of nowhere a few weeks ago concerning PSN outages and such makes complete sense now and is incredibly fucking shady. All they cared about was protecting their own asses.

Perhaps, but I think it had more to do with the lawsuit w/GeoHot. One of the big factors in the lawsuit was if he had a PSN account and if he agreed to the TOS. But that's just a guess. I keep meaning to copy the text of the TOS and keep a copy of it so I can do a diff against the updated terms and see what exactly is changing.
Anyone who deleted their CC info before this happening still changing/canceling their cards?
I used a CC ONCE on my main account, then promptly deleted it after buying my games. Should I be worried? o_O

That's what I'm wondering, but my main is actually a sub account heh. I'm thinking we shouldn't be worried since it's deleted, unless that info actually does stay on their system somehow

i called my bank. they were already aware of the situation, and said there is no need for me to replace my card. was pretty happy about that.

which bank do you use?

You do realize that that's what a TOS is always about, right?

If they are already aware- they probably already reissued you a card based on your transaction history.

I like the new title better. However, Anon's timing couldn't be any worse. They declared war with Sony and then got blamed for something they didn't do. The PSN hackers probably timed their stealthy attacks. Whatever Anon's noble message is, it's pretty hard to explain their innocence now. It's like that farmer joke, he's caught with his pants off while milking the cow (his belt was tied to the cow's tail because it was bothering him).
which bank do you use?
a major NYC based bank. they're usually on top of fraudulent charges.

plus, according to my contract, i am not financially responsible for charges not made by me.

I've only purchased things on PSN with gift cards, but I think I remember being forced to enter a credit card # when I first signed up.

:-({|=Boo fucking hoo that they got blamed for something they didn't do. Their message is not "noble." It's hardly noble that half of those idiots attack whoever and whatever even if they have no idea what or why they are doing so, just because some "leader" tells them to.

I now have to wait 7-10 days for a new debit card because I once bought a game for a system I hardly touch. This is awesome.

I doubt you really need to do that. You should have just kept a eye on it instead of jumping to conclusions. You could have deleted your card on file at nothing since you know you wouldn't buy anything else anyway. ;)

7-10 days? You should of requested your card be overnight'd. Most card companies will wave the overnight fee/charge if it is your first request. I asked for a replacement card from VISA at around 4:30PM Tuesday evening (EST) and had my replacement by 2PM EST Wednesday (yesterday).

I didn't want to risk it. There's been enough misinformation already coming from Sony made me want to be proactive. And I want to buy stuff from Sony. There's just nothing to buy ;)

Mine is through bbva/compass. They kept saying that they can't overnight it. It's frustrating. I shouldn't even be in a position where I have to do this.

You could have took it off and added it again later. It ain't like 360 where its a bitch to get it taken off. Nothing to buy my ass.

Doesnt matter if my credit card was stolen or not, I called discover and they canceled my account and reissued me a new one. I did it just to be on the safe side.

Wish they could atleast restore accounts on psn so I could login and get my password changed though. That will be job number 1 soon as it comes back online.

It's easy to take your card off the 360, just go to the site and click delete.

i started getting a ton of spam email. im keeping a close eye on my accounts, thinking of freezing my credit line

I tried that and had to wait several days before it would actually let me. At first it gave me some weird error.

Where could I have done that? I legit don't know. Besides, I think it's just better thing to do than wait around and see what happens. We all shouldn't be in a position to even had to do this, anyway.

They said the new update will make everyone change there passwords which is a good idea.

Maybe it was just a one time site error? I've changed/taken off cards/paypal 3-4 times over the last year or so and have never gotten an error.
Where could I have done that? I legit don't know.
To remove you billing information:

 1. Start your PS3
 2. Navigate to "PSN Network" on the Cross Media Bar
 3. Scroll down and select "account management"
 4. Scroll to and select "account management"
 5. Scroll to and select "Billing Information"
 6. Enter your password
 7. Then scroll down and select "Delete Billing Information"
 8. Highlight and select "Yes"

It kept doing it for over 2 weeks no matter how many times I tried. It basically told me to call, but I didn't want to do that. It finally let me delete it from the site after 2 weeks and a couple of days.
Thanks for letting me know. Next time I turn on my blu ray machine I'll take it off.
You won't be able to until psn is back up, but I'm sure you knew that. Blu-ray machine... Your asking for it. ;)
