Just have to A+ chapters 10 and 13 (and maybe the bonus chapters?) in Hotline Miami and I'll get my plat, wooo! I already got A-'s on them so maybe if I follow a video guide for them, I can do it.

Follow a video guide, use the drill or the mask that gives you high combos. Was 10 the police station? I think what I remember doing was using the combo mask, then baiting everyone over to me, using the very first door to knock them down and take their weapons. Then I'd throw the weapons outside so they couldn't get them back. After that, you have a bunch of unarmed enemies running around that are pretty easy to take out quickly.

I used to see how many times I could beat Mike Tyson in Punch Out prior to going out to play for the day during one summer. I think I still have the password memorized (007 373 5963). Or how many consescutive 4 liners I could setup in tetris. Or how long I could tolerate the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles NES game. Qbert runs without escape disks. Super Mario speed runs.

Self made obnoxious challenges existed before trophies/achievements.
Yeah, I get that self-made challenges existed before the advent of achievements, but for me, they weren't center to my gaming experiences. Every now and then I'd do crazy speed runs or whatever, but that was more an attempt to extend the life of the game. It just seems a bit disingenuous to suggest gamers have always been as willing to deal with the level of tedium trophies bring now. Nah, I honestly believe they've changed the way a lot of people play games. I'm not saying whether that's a bad or good thing. There's just no way I could enjoy games the way I prefer to and trophy hunt. The two philosophies clash, and I think that's why we often see people (on either side of the debate) get defensive. At the end of the day, you have to do what makes you happy, so whatever. I used to hate hard on you guys, lol, but now I'm like...that's cool. Enjoy!

How did it take me half the game to realize that in Knack you can swap what you find in a treasure chest for something your friends found in that chest?  Thought it was just showing me who had already found that chest.

Yeah, I figured that out after a few chapters. That makes the loot stuff much better from then on. If you have an Android or iOS device, the Knack puzzle game there also offers up gadgets for playing it.

Yeah, I found out about the app a couple days ago and have spent more time grinding upgrades than playing the game since then. :whee:

I loved pressing up on the magic menu in ffVI and you could use your esper summons.

Esper summons and the fact that magicite influences how your stats grow were pivotal in Final Fantasy VI but i think only like 10% of the people who played the game even knew about magicite stat influence and esper summons.

Before trophies I still was getting master materias and beating the ruby and emerald weapons in ff7. Too each their own.

the only trophies I can't stand are the unattainable. Like getting lord of the rings conquest and finding the servers are turned off.

Just got my third plat with Flower, though you can get that one almost by accident.
Don't feel any different, there's no power up, no quickening, nothing. How many plats until I get money/superpowers?

flower has no plat.

I think most people who look down on trophies overlook the value in them beyond the thought of bragging rights or some meaningless reward.  I appreciate trophies because they provide a reference point in which to share games and the related experiences with friends (online or real life).  Being able to compare my trophy list to my friends gives me some insight on what they have played in comparison to me and what they have accomplished in comparison to me to help me get insight on what they like and how they play.  It may also help to challenge me to try to accomplish the same the same things they have in games I'm already interested in and even spur me to try games that I might not otherwise.

Also, trophies provide a different way of approaching some games.  There are some games that I might have never played a certain way or style except that there was a trophy that encouraged me to expand my horizon.

I do think that trophies/achievements are over-emphasized by a lot of gamers but they shouldn't be completely dismissed as childish or foolish.

Meaningless reward?! Sony sends me PSN bucks for every trophy I get in a year. $0.01 for bronze, $0.20 for silver, $0.50 for gold, and $1.00 for platinum.

No one else submits their trophy redemption at the end of the year?

I thought every trophy hunter does this but I got $2 for each platinum. When did you start doing this? I think they're changing the payments next year in Amy's which sucks.

I have never been aware of this. I collect trophies and never got squat in PSN credit for them.

Seriously guys?

At the start of every month you can take a screenshot of your total trophies page (the one that shows how many bronze, silver, gold, platinum you have along with your PSN ID) and attach it in an email to [email protected].  They compare your trophy totals to what you submitted the previous month and then deposit the corresponding amount into your PSN wallet within 15 days.

Quick Vita question: I'm considering purchasing either Metal Gear HD Collection or Need For Speed: Most Wanted.  I know these games are completely different, but if price were similar, which game would you recommend?  I haven't played either MGS2 or MGS3 before (only beat MGS Twin Snakes on Gamecube and MGS4 on PS3), and I haven't played many NFS games other than Hot Pursuit on iOS haha.  I appreciate any recommendations :)

I loved MGS2 when I first played it a few years back. I haven't heard great things about Most Wanted, but if you liked Twin Snakes/4 the HD collection is a very safe bet. It's just too bad the Vita version doesn't include Peace Walker.

Thanks for the quick response MNS. I'm a bit torn because I enjoyed Twin Snakes for the most part (except for some stupid John Woo moments which my friend assured me were NOT in the original MGS), but I despised MGS4. Well... despise is a harsh word, but I hated the self-serious story in the midst of so much nonsense, and while the gameplay was enjoyable, I felt I had to suffer through cutscene after cutscene where Kojima spewed garbage which he somehow thought was clever in some meta way. I've heard great things about MGS3 though, and I don't know too much about MGS2 other than the Raiden kerfuffle haha.

Well MGS in general is personified by ridiculously lengthy cutscenes, and 2 is no different. It's not QUITE as "bad" as 4, but some definitely go on for quite some time. The gameplay is a bit different as it has a fixed camera like the original, unlike 4 and the rerelease of 3, Subsistence.I personally preferred it over 4 (I have yet to play 3...yes, I know) but I seem to be in minority in this. From what I've heard though, Peace Walker is actually the least convoluted from a story standpoint, and the gameplay is a bit faster and designed for shorter play sessions (it was a PSP game originally of course). It sounds like that might be more up your alley, so I would suggest perhaps picking it up instead of the HD collection.

That's just my two cents, I'm sure others will have a lot to say to the contrary (MGS is another trigger word in this thread) ;)

MGS2 is my favorite one! 3 is my least favorite. So in the collection, you'll get the best MGS and the worst. But definitely get the collection over some crappy NFS game.

It's next to where you put in your PayPal info and just below where you request your monthly onion allotment.
Wait, the PS store takes PayPal now? When did this happen? Will it convert Amy's for me, or do I need to take them to my bank?

And fine, since apparently there's no plat in Flower, I got it in Resogun. I might possibly have more plats than Eld now.

Can't speak to the Vita version of Most Wanted specifically, but it's a fantastic racer. NFS alternates devs every other year, like CoD, and Most Wanted is a Criterion game. That's a good thing :) These are the guys who made the terrific Burnout series, and NFS: Most Wanted is the closest I've ever played to a sequel to Burnout Paradise, possibly the best arcade-style racer this generation.

The Final Fantasy discussion was before the trophy discussion people!  Perhaps Frisky can put the monthly schedule in the OP?

Also, trophies provide a different way of approaching some games. There are some games that I might have never played a certain way or style except that there was a trophy that encouraged me to expand my horizon.
I think this is the most enjoyable example for me - I like Assassin's Creed games for this. There's so many weird little things they program in that you probably wouldn't know about if you didn't go through the trophy list like being able to topple scaffolding on to pursuers (AC:R), the bayonet double assassination (ACIII), kicking guards from the flyer (AC:B), etc. I get annoyed that they add grind trophies in to the multiplayer side of it, but had I not seen those on the list in AC:B I probably wouldn't have even tried the multiplayer and now I enjoy the hell out of it.

I'll do some grindy stuff from time to time (like maxing out levels in Soul Sacrifice or Dragon's Crown), but only if the result is that I get to successfully play some end game content that I wouldn't otherwise be able to hang with or if I find inexplicable enjoyment in it (like fighting giant turtle things in FFXIII). It really doesn't seem like the majority of trophies are mindless grinds, but those are the ones people typically get focused on when talking about it. Maybe I'm ignorant and just don't notice though.

Hoping for some good sales action today. Also, I wish Octodad would release already.

Don't know what was up with Sony when this all went down but I just got my two-dollar PSN credit for getting the plat for Walking Dead.  I only finished the game four months ago.  I contacted customer service to see WTF was taking so long and didn't get any legit answers.  At least I finally have the credit.  Should I use it to get Hydrophobia Prophecy?

I can't log into the webstore anymore?

I know I had a password change just a couple days ago, but even though PSN works fine on my consoles/handheld, doesn't work online...
