Sort of, but it's more of an homage to Final Fantasy that pokes fun at certain things and doesn't take itself too seriously. The combat is fairly basic turn-based RPG mechanics, though they change things up a bit for the third and side chapters.
I think Frisky answered it well, it doesn't take itself too seriously, but it still has a good focus on core gameplay. It can be a little bit grindy at times (but never too bad, plus minimal grinding can be fun). Combat is very basic turn-based fare, extremely similar to the original Dragon Warrior.
Thanks guys. Still a little on the fence, but it looks like a good game. I'll make up my mind later tonight.

Started Spelunky and I can already tell it's a case of the sequel being so much better than the original. I do have a couple questions though.

Is there an end? If so, at what level does the game stop? I've only made it to level five so far.
I believe you have to get through four levels to open up the next environment with four environments in the game.

What sequel, the eventual/hypothetical one?

I beat the first chapter of Dragon Fantasy in iOS, but I had trouble with the difficulty in the second chapter.  I'm starting all over on Vita now (I love the improved graphics and the fact I can dash), and I'm hoping I'll have better luck this time with the later chapters...

Pretty much a perfect description of what you can expect right here. I would recommend it if you are a fan of old 8 bit JRPGs. I enjoyed it quite a bit for what it was and will be picking up Book 2.

Played through Limbo for the first time this weekend, and it's a great fit on the Vita. In a low light setting the art style looks amazing on the small screen, and it's really nice to be able to just put it to sleep and come back to a part you can't figure out. Even though it's an older game, it was well worth $6.

Taking a little break from the oodles of JRPGs on my VIta and have started Knytt Underground.

Only a good hour into it and I think it has the potential to be really, really cool and atmospheric. Just not feeling it yet. I'm willing to give it time, but does it get better?
Are you in the third chapter yet? The third chapter is amazing. And enormous. One of the largest maps I've ever seen in a 2D game.

Glad you reminded me of Limbo being on sale. I just need to decide tonight (in the next 30 mins or so realistically), whether to pick up Limbo on a nice sale or pick up Spelunky instead while it still has its smaller, intro discount.

I'm waffling on Limbo as well.  Cool that it has 2 separate trophy lists which makes the $6 more justifiable.  But I already beat it on 360 and it seems like a prime entry to PS+ since EU got it a few months ago.

Oh man, I wish you hadn't said that. Now I will be second guessing my potential purchase even more. I will spend about $100 worth of my time anguishing over this $6 purchase. Curse you PS Plus!

Yeah, after thinking about that more I decided to pass. I burnt myself pretty bad on Rayman Origins and RE HD Chronicles this month, I've got to be a tad more selective on digital games.

waiting for $3.50 or ps+ =)

I am really tempted to buy Skullgirls again. (I have it on PC.. but guess not)

will be getting Kickbeat!

and thanks to canedaddy for a code of Unit 13 :D been wanting to play it on my Vita :D

I believe this is a great month for Plus. Just a bit of breath for the wallet. I'm still undecided on Castle of Illusion although I like the look of the preorder bonus. Decisions, decisions...

Anyone else along Dragon Fantasy Book 1 with the 8-bit graphics & sound instead of the enhanced versions? I didn't really play any 16-bit RPGs until the Virtual Console enabled me, but I played the shit out of Dragon Warrior & Final Fantasy 1 when they originally came out. Turning off the enhanced stuff feels like home to me.

The PSN store doesn't update until Tuesday afternoon.  Unless I missed an announcement of them making that game available right at midnight, it shouldn't be available yet.  Weird.

I don't recall hearing about a midnight release either, but I'm downloading it now. Sweeeet.

Since this a new thread, I think it'd be a good place to ask.

Does anyone else have issues with the CAG notification system? I keep changing it to "Stop Notifying me of Updates" but I still get notifications when people post, even when they're not quoting me. It's obnoxious.
 Everytime I login, I have 4,500 notifications...someone, please make it stop.

It looks interesting but to me this is like Divekick, just doesn't look quite meaty enough to justify $8.

I've just started ignoring it, I'm nearly at 26,000.
First, Divekick is well worth the 8 because it is simple but a really deep system and yea its silly but its hella fun and worth the money. Kickbeat doesn't really look like a fighting game but more like a combat system ripped off from Batman: AC but with music and stuff.

Click on your user name in the top right corner, then click on my settings.  Go to notification options and uncheck the box under Topics & Posts that says "auto follow topics I reply to."  That'll at least keep you from adding more notifications.  I think you have to manually unfollow every topic you're currently following.

Yeah, I know Divekick is good but I just can't bring myself to get it over $5. Still think Drivekick would have been better too since that's what I thought the game was for months. I don't know how a racing fighting game would work but the concept sounded amazing while I was doing that E3 Home thing and kept reading it with an R every time it came on screen.

New Castle of Illusion is pretty fun. Looks gorgeous, and seems like lots more to collect compared to the original. Landing jumps accurately took me a bit for some reason, though. Glad I bought it and happy it came out at midnight.

Gaming Trend has a review for Kickbeat here and they give it an 84.  I'm not a fan of the included music, so I'm glad you can import your own songs.  Also, Zen Studios has a good track record with Pinball FX/Zen Pinball and CastleStorm.  I'm going to wait for some more impressions, but I'm leading toward getting it.

If you need to think about a game purchase more than 30 seconds, then you don't want it.
This. I picked up Journey, Tokyo Jungle, and Dyad this past week. All were must haves at those prices for me. I could have easily gotten four more titles but then I gave it some thought...

Closure - would likely be tucked away in my backlog for months

Limbo - very tempting but I can hold out for a better price

Penny Arcade - again, backlog

Castle of Illusion - I stopped for a minute to think about this knowing about all the pre-order bonuses. I played the original back in the day and enjoyed it but have too many games to keep my attention today. Also, I have too many platformers to catch up on to justify $15 for the remake.

30 seconds, don't sweat the technique!

Game hits its stride in chapter 3. Very atmospheric, hidden areas are plentiful. You pretty much need a walkthrough to get 100%. Getting the challenge area trophy "falu kohe" and the secret ending are very memorable gaming moments for me.

I believe you have to get through four levels to open up the next environment with four environments in the game.
There are 4 main worlds of 4 levels each, plus Hell which adds 4 more levels, but which is difficult to get to. And there are also several hidden levels. I've stumbled across two of those so far.

I have the shortcuts to all of the main worlds now. Getting the 3rd item for the Temple shortcut was damned challenging, albeit nowhere near as challenging as the Temple itself. I don't think I can survive the Temple if I use the shortcut. You need key equipment and extra health. However you can use the shortcut to see what's in store and experiment with how to get by obstacles/kill monsters. I haven't even made it past 4-2 yet. So tough. Such a great game!

no sign of Rayman Legends vita reviews? I'd like for someone to go ahead and put the official nail in the coffin (although I'll probably hold out naive hope until the store updates).

This is what I did to limit what I get notified about here: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/index.php?app=core&module=usercp&tab=core&area=notifications

I never had any of the notification problems you guys seem to be having. All I ever get notified about are people liking posts or quoting me. Don't think I changed any settings around...

So I guess I'm the only one who actually uses the regular notification system? I only follow like 4-5 threads on here, and I know 2 of those are rarely posted in. I like the notifications, because it tells me when something in a particular thread is blowing up or escalating. Then I'm the level-headed bouncer that keeps things in check, like Swayze in Roadhouse.

no sign of Rayman Legends vita reviews? I'd like for someone to go ahead and put the official nail in the coffin (although I'll probably hold out naive hope until the store updates).
according to other forums it's supposed to be beautiful and awesome... but it is missing those 'invader' levels. i think everyone is waiting on word from ubi on whether they're going to get patched in or provided as dlc or something.

but for the levels that are there (which are the vast majority)? i'm hearing good things.

I know I'm probably in the minority but I could care less what the vita version of Rayman Legends has or doesn't have. I'm getting it for vita regardless because I simply don't find myself playing platformers on anything but handhelds these days.

Now don't everyone start bashing me for not hating on Ubisoft or that I'm one of the reasons they get away with stuff like that haha. I just loved Origins on my vita so I'm giving Legends a shot regardless. If I don't like it I'll just sell it, but probably not because there are missing levels lol. Not saying that it's you guys at all, it's just funny seeing how angry people are getting all over the internet about it. I like to save my anger for more important things than some levels in a video game. ;)

I stopped all thread notifications a long time ago in settings as it gets to be too much information to even process, now I only get notification for some user's status updates, likes, and quotes. Gave one last look at this weeks deals, pretty much the only thing on sale that I hadn't previously purchased is Dyad and retro-grade and after looking at gameplay videos neither appealed to me.

I think a lot of the frustration comes down to an expectation that all versions will be essentially identical beyond exclusive stuff, especially after the spot-on port of Origins. Since Ubisoft has been completely discrete and silent about missing content, it fels misleading.

But I'm with you, if I don't get it on Vita, I wont play it, its that simple. Plus I'm using a gjftcard so I have no reservations buying it at launch.

For fighter fans - I know there are so many of you in here - the free version of Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate is supposed to hit PSN today. In addition to the four core characters, two extra characters, Hitomi and Jann Lee, will also be free for a limited time. Otherwise, extra characters are usually $4 each.
