Since pre-order deals suck, I decided I'd get GTA5 on PSN for the gamesharing. The collector in me is crying.

Anyway, anyone know of any PSN card deals? Anything at all, even if it's just a $1 in savings? I can't remember the last time I bought a PSN card.

Looks like the BBY deal has finally ended and that was the only thing that's been ongoing lately.

I'm confused about that game though. Is the Vita version not considered "HD"?
I always thought Vita games were HD, but I guess Ubisoft is about to prove us wrong.

I don't know why they can't just keep the original title. Adding the HD tag to it makes it seem like the Vita version is inferior.

K. Not my intention to drag this debate out (please, please just skip it if you don't "care"), but anyone interested in seeing how Polygon's 243 reviews stack up, the averages are spoiler'd beneath. Maybe this is a bit inconsequential, lol, but it's equally as silly for people to continually make drive-by posts about how such & such publication is "biased". To be clear, I know these averages don't necessarily prove or disprove anything.

  • Polgyon has given out one console-exclusive perfect score: Persona 4 Golden
  • Polygon has given out one console-exclusive 10/100 (lowest possible) score: Steel Battalion
Polygon, on average (including multiplat games), gives a score of 70 (3.3 points lower than the metacritic average). This is actually 1 point below its Sony exclusive-average.

  • 60% of Polygon reviews are below the metacritic avearge (conversely, 60% of IGN reviews beat the average).
  • 36% of Polgyon reviews are above the metacritic avearage.
  • 4% of Polgyon reviews are the same as the metacritic average.
*Note that Polygon restricts itself to increments of .5.*

Quick, before we start blabbing about review scores, I'm going to bring up a few other dead horses we can beat:

- Demon's/Dark souls games are terrible/the best games ever!

- Spelunky =/= Spelunker HD sequel

- What games are going to be free for PS Plus in 2015?

- Final Fantasy!!!

How can you even compare Spelunky with PS Plus?

Hahaha. Well, to be fair...that wouldn't be considered "beating a dead horse" since I introduced new information that changes the nature of the debate. I also proved how much of a loser I am, but, oh well.

Does anyone know if you preorder GTA V, do you only get the discount on one game or does it apply to the whole Rockstar catelog after that?

I'm confused about that game though. Is the Vita version not considered "HD"?
if i remember correctly, vita is qHD, or quarter HD. In practice, it's HD for its screen size, it just technically doesn't fit the definition.

K. Not my intention to drag this debate out

I'm pretty sure you're not understanding the charge being levied. This has been made clear on several occasions, but you seem to be ignoring it. Your numbers are, unfortunately, meaningless because they do not reflect the actual charge being made.

The bias, if it exists, does not extend (for reasons that will be detailed) to 'sony exclusives', but only highly hyped Sony exclusives. For example, we're not talking about games like Hyperdimension Neptunia (ps3), or, say, Escape Plan (vita) --- only top tier, super hyped games along the lines of KZ, Dragon's Crown, Ni No Kuni, TLOU, etc.

Why? Because it's actually the smart and logical way to implement bias.

Niche games aren't 'console sellers', they don't chart in media mindshare, and those buying them will be buying them regardless. There is no benefit to not rating them 'normally'.

Let's say we ran a site and wanted to target the Wii, for example. Who cares what we give Waggle Rafting? Why rate it low? There is zero benefit, only risk. The only games that would need to be targeted are those that reach a level of hype that many gamers who don't even own the system are reading about. Those are the potential system sellers.

If we wanted to try to hurt the brand, we'd only need to hit the ones getting hype - the marios, xenoblade, maybe fire emblem, pokemon, etc. (or, in the case of Wii U, maybe something very high profile like ZombieU).

And now, if you went and did a spreadsheet of all Wii exclusives... our biased reviews of the top titles would be completely hidden in the 'fair and balanced' reviews of games like Waggle Rafting, Waggle Fishing, and Waggle Ring Toss.

That is how bias in media review sites works. Is Polygon biased? Maybe. I think likely. You don't. But hopefully we're at least on the same page about what is being charged. 'Hit 'em where it hurts'.

Interesting numbers. Thanks for sharing. Makes me want to continue on my list and see how it turns out, especially in regards to big AAA releases. I see they gave 9s to Guacamelee, Sound Shapes, and Tales from Space which helped raise their PS3 exclusive ratings. Certainly all great Sony (console) exclusives, but not exactly super high profile games like Killzone Mercenary and The Last of Us.

Anyways, you and I will probably have to agree to disagree on this. But thanks for sharing. Don't worry about all the other comments, whenever there are Atlus or Final Fantasy sales I have to wade through 100s of posts that I don't care about, generally filled with the same questions. I know this is less on topic then those conversations, but there's always gonna be some discussion in this thread that doesn't interest a certain portion of the audience. Oh well.

That is how bias in media review sites works. Is Polygon biased? Maybe. I think likely. You don't. But hopefully we're at least on the same page about what is being charged.
I lost it a Waggle Rafting!

Where are the pages and pages of praises from people for putting games on sale after they were free to plus? Credit where its due people, a lot of you asked for that to happen.

Think I'm going to pull the trigger on VLR. Almost finished with 999. Any reason to pick the 3DS version over this one?

Vita version has better sound, visuals, and comes with three save slots compared to the one you get on the 3DS.

The 3DS cart version of the game has a nasty save deleting glitch late in the game. The digital version of the game on the Nintendo e-shop has it removed, though.

What he said. I'm playing VLR on my Vita right now and it looks/sounds great. Highly recommended.

Ubisoft could've won some people over by saying that Rayman Origins would be free for PS+ a month or so after it was on sale, but they don't seem to be concerned about disclosing things like that upfront at the moment. Let people decide what they want.

Here's The Drop for this week:

PlayStation Network

Killzone: Mercenary
(PS Vita // Also on Gamecard) – If you thought the battle lines were clear, you’ve not seen the whole story. Killzone: Mercenary throws you into a deadly firefight where you not only fight alongside the dangerous ISA, but also shoulder to shoulder with the vicious Helghast. There is no good. There is no evil. There is only the mission … and the money. Experience Killzone from a brutally new perspective, only on PlayStation Vita.

Puppeteer (Also on PS3 Blu-ray) – One dark moonlit night, a young boy named Kutaro was carried away by the maleficent Moon Bear King to a black castle where the unlucky lad was transformed into a puppet. Kutaro displeased the terrible tyrant, who devoured the boy’s wooden head and cast away his body. But the headless hero was not alone, for he had discovered a very special pair of scissors to help him on his harrowing adventure to find his head, and his way home.

The platforming adventure Puppeteer takes place in a magical theater, with many worlds and wild situations to explore, all on one magical stage. Experience a rich, dark fairytale where surprises lurk around every corner.

Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter HD – Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter lets players explore huge non-linear locations as they attempt to track down a variety of dinosaurs that are armed with some ferociously advanced AI. As a result, these are no “pea-brained” dinosaurs — these are dangerous creatures that are able to see, hear and sense the hunter. If you’re not careful, it’s very easy for the hunter to become the hunted.

With 15 different dinosaurs across five distinct environments (including pine forests, muddy marshes and rolling hills,) how you approach your target is important. Wind direction, scent and the use of a special dinosaur call are all key elements in tracking your prey.

Dragon Fantasy Book II (Cross Buy & Cross Play) – While the original Dragon Fantasy was an homage to NES-era RPG’s, Book II moves up to the 16-bit SNES era.

NHL 14 – Unlock the highest level of hockey aggression, speed and skill. NHL 14 brings together the best technology from EA SPORTS to deliver the most authentic hockey experience ever. Deliver hits with the cutting-edge NHL Collision Physics, built from FIFA’s revolutionary Player Impact Engine. Drop the gloves with the new Enforcer Engine, powered by EA SPORTS Fight Night technology.

Sanctum 2 – Sanctum 2 is the sequel to the world’s first Tower Defense/FPS hybrid game! Pick from four unique character classes and take up the mission of protecting the Cores from hordes of mysterious aliens. In Sanctum 2 you play your character exactly the way you want through the new and extensive customization system. Pick your own loadout of towers, weapons and perks, and pick well, because you are humanity’s last defense against the hordes set out to destroy it.

Hunter’s Trophy 2: Australia – Realistic animal behaviour, a variety of environments, weapons, animals, hunting plans, equipment and skills to unlock, online leaderboards, training in shooting at fixed and moving targets… all are brought together to offer a unique gaming experience which will delight experienced and novice hunters as well as players just looking to experience something new.

Demos
Diablo III
EA Sports FIFA 14
Hunter’s Trophy 2: Australia
Pro Evolution Soccer 2014

PlayStation 2 Classic

Mystic Heroes – Mystic Heroes is the localization of a side story from Koei’s Houshin Engi series in Japan. Although the story and names are changed, the gameplay is the same. Play as one of four different characters who battle masses of enemies in the style of Dynasty Warriors (Shin Sangoku Musou). Magical items can be found to provide more powerful spell attacks. The game supports up to 4 players in various competitive modes and a minor cooperative mode.

I don't even know what to say, honestly. Seems you moved the goalpost because the numbers don't fit the narrative you're attempting to sell. What I posted wasn't meant to debunk your theory. I simply expanded on @tyler's work to show that there isn't as strong a deviation in Polygon's scores as the original sample of 37 suggested. A cursory glance at the total averages also suggests that they grade Sony exclusives the least harsh of all platforms. But, nowwwww, you're saying I need only examine the scores of "console sellers" with copious amounts of mindshare?! Please, sir, stop yourself. As if Sly Cooper, Dragon's Crown and Killzone fit either one of those descriptors. Oh, and while I'm at it, would you have me ignore the Nintendo and Microsoft exclusives that might qualify (ya know...Luigi's Mansion, Kingdom Hearts, Witcher 2, Forza Horizon, Minecraft)?

Frankly, I'll never be able to tell you what those nasty Polygon heathens  are up to. Just as I don't pretend to understand IGN's motives when they hand out 9s,10s and GAME-OF-THE-MILLENNIUMs like candy. As such, I try not to come to here and opine out of my ass about things I can't prove. Someone wrote a few posts back about the jobs at stake when metascores are computed. That's not Polygon's problem.Take that with up with Metacritic or the idiotic publishers who use it as a metric of performance. How do you even normalize the scores of publications that almost never go below 8 with another that regularly uses the entire 10 point scale? How about you start there before spreading juvenile rumors about who's in bed with Microsoft.

I bought Mystic Heroes for ps2 like 10 years ago on a date when I first met my wife. She said she wanted the game and it looked cute dynasty warriors style so i was a baller and pulled out some cash. Time flies. now adays id be pulling out gift cards and looking for a deal. i look at my old receipts and shutter at what i spent on games compared to today, but that purchase was totally worth it. i never played the game much, but 5 kids later and i still have her ;)

Affa's point about the Metacritic affecting people's jobs is that if Polygon is intentionally giving out lower scores for hits or because they have a hidden agenda, then that is fucked up because it can affect the jobs of those people. If Polygon's reviews are actually unbiased, then it's a moot point.

I'm not going to spoiler this cause I'm awesome.

I hadn't gotten that when they tried to just let the Vita version of Legends slip out without telling anyone about the missing levels or if they were going to be patched.

Nice to see NHL 14 on the Vita, I'll be getting that for sure...or none of that.
Exactly. That would be amazing but instead EA is content recycling the same version of FIFA on it.

This is one of the best deals I've ever read on this website. Still hoping to land a deal like this myself :)

Five kids later? Time to trade that in, dude. Next gen is here!

It's not juvenile to note that a review site received 750k from a major player in the industry.

and I have not 'moved goal posts'. I have always tried to make clear I'm talking specifically about high profile exclusives. As mentioned, it wouldn't even be logical for a site to review low tier games badly.

I've also been careful to point out that I don't think individual reviewers even need to be 'in on it'. A single editor that picks who reviews what could easily affect review scores. You see it when certain games get reviewed where it's clear the reviewer isn't a fan of the genre to begin with.

And nobody can 'prove' it. That's my point. We can only wonder. You don't want us to wonder out loud, but that's silly. This is the internet. We discuss things. Polygon has reached a point where it gets discussed. I'm sorry you're not happy with that, but it was bound to happen the second they cashed that huge check.

edited to add:

i'll also point out that i don't have a vendetta against them or anything. i actually visit their site almost daily, and read articles and reviews. I wasn't the first to make charges against them, even if I do think they might be guilty. But when you post that those charges are ridiculous, I will defend them because I think it's absolutely absurd to not even consider the possibility 750k affects reviews in an industry known to be corrupt and franchise mindshare is incredibly important. Does it mean they're guilty? No. But to throw out the possibility? Or act like we shouldn't talk about it? Absurd.

Decided that I'm going to pick up puppeteer this week because of all the positive buzz. I know absolutely nothing about it, going in more or less blind. Something kinda exciting about that.

Don't know why I'm asking here, but for those who have played Retro City Rampage: is there any point behind doing the side missions besides just doing them?  I've just been doing the main missions, am I missing out on anything?

In other news, Kingdom Hearts HD collection has a total platinum count of...drum roll...0. That's right, 0. Zip. Nada. Oh well.
