Not to take the debate further down the rabbit hole but it would be nice if PS1 disc support was on the PS4 since a toaster could probably run those games now and it was all software based emulation on the PS3. In any event with so much PS3 content I plan on keeping both hooked up anyway. If anything leaves my TV setup it's the 360 first. :)
Agreed but these games are a great source of revenue for a company that is in desperate need of it

That tweet is old and vague. But, yes, it appears they got wind of the complaints and will hasten the patch (I hope, at least). Also, is it necessary to characterize someone's complaint as "bitching"? I'll never understand the phenomenon of bitching about "bitching". If trophies were arbitrarily dropped, most of you would die of a heart attack. I, on the other hand, couldn't care less. To each his own.
Might want to check the date on that tweet again. 10/13, that's not old. Also, while vague, and maybe not directly related to this MP3/streaming issue, it shows that they're listening to consumer concerns and forwarding the feedback internally. I still really don't know whether or not you're carrying this on to just keep arguing at this point, or if you're genuinely convinced that none of these features could be patched in at a later date. Go back to 360/PS3 launch and show me how many features were missing that were eventually added in. You do know these systems aren't a Super Nintendo, right? The OS and firmware can and will be changed.

Also, every single person who has a PS3 uses trophies. And before you say "Bah! No I don't I'm above trophies!" I didn't say every person pays attention and tracks them, but you can't use a PS3 and play a game without unlocking trophies. I'm willing to bet that less than 1% of users use the DLNA service, and maybe ~10% actively use their PS3 for listening to MP3s.

Should we go back to 2008 and start complaining how these systems aren't backwards compatible, because one time at your cousin's friend's house, his next-door neighbor played Jet Moto in his PS2 and that means a lot of people are going to be pissed that the new PS3s and 360s can't play last gen games?

Edit: I did not see jkam's post, and apparently we are stupid enough to still be complaining that current/next gen systems can't play games from two years ago.

While we're at it, I wish the Wii U could play my old Chrono Trigger cartridge because the whole reason you buy current/next gen systems is to play old games.

bless you for using 'there's a myriad of inexpensive devices' instead of what seems to be the new acceptable standard 'there's myriad inexpensive devices'. why must npr fuck with my notions of noun plurality??? what am I talking about???
I do know what you're talking about, and I agree with you 100%. It makes me cringe when people say myriad the way you quoted in your 2nd example.

It's actually not. Grasshopper published it, but the game was made by a Hungarian studio called Digital Reality.
Oh.

I would just like to add a point to what Frisky is saying. If the PS4 was released and the DLNA or MP3 playing was somehow causing an issue with the system, I bet people would bitch that they should have left it out and patched it when it was 100% working.

It seems like there's myriad things you could complain about besides this.

Already played Binary Domain on the 360 but I will play it again on the PS3...hopefully the DS4 works with it.  Very excited about this month.  I will say this again. Why do I buy games?  I am good with PS+ until Dec 2015 but I may buy another year if I can get in on the $30 BF deal (I think there is one?).

Gamestop and Amazon are both having PS+ codes for 30$ on BlackFriday. I'm definitely gonna buy at least 2.

just because you dont use a feature doesnt mean that other people dont. if you dont care that doesnt mean other people shouldnt. personally i use DLNA and mp3 playback almost every day on my ps3.

but anyway, im pretty excited about free Binary Domain and Dragon's Dogma. both are games that ive almost bought many many times but never quite pulled the trigger on.

totally agreed, and it works conversely - just because you care doesn't mean other people should.

I can't believe there might actually be people playing binary domain online. Those trophies might be possible now!

Yeah, I stopped buying Vita games when every game I bought ended up on the service. All the great games end up being on PS+ sooner or later.
Persona 4 Golden isn't on there yet and it's the best game on the platform. I say you can buy a Vita and get Persona like I did then just feast off everything you get from Plus.

Sorry if I missed possible sarcasm...but it's a day old.

Here's one from today: https://mobile.twitter.com/yosp/status/395844205215363072

Lame that they didn't include it in there. Hopefully it's patched in like it was to the PS3.
By "old", I meant already referenced here. I made my post after reading his tweet.

That comment was actually meant as a 'look how out of touch I am' thing not a 'everyone that uses ps3 media features is a filthy pirate' thing. Nor would I give a shit anyways. But I should know better than to make contextually irrelevant comments like that, frightfully sorry.
Alright, well, it's just that some people have been saying that people only use these features to stream pirated files. Your insolence is forgiven.

Have you ever noticed that you participate in a forum dedicated to, let me say it eloquently, videogame deals? And that, before it is a "multimedia device", the PlayStation 4 is a gaming console? Yes? No? Also, in my rather short post, I presume you read that I wrote trophies in some kind of invisible ink. Kudos to you, sir. The tweets are a rather considerate way of letting consumers know their voice is been heard, no matter how "old" you deem they are. There is a time and place to "complain", since you don't bitch, but instead you are indeed rather close to "whining". They never said they wouldn't add, it just is a set of features not yet available. And in the case they are not available, considering the gamut of devices capable of running media, why is that even considered detrimental?
I only used trophies as an example because it's a frequent topic of discussion here. It's a part of a feature set that people have come to expect from playstation devices. I feel the same about its myriad  multimedia capabilities. Let's not lose sight of what's happened here. This isn't simply about "mp3 compatibility". From my understanding, there is virtually no way to play music locally on the PS4. LOL. How can people defend that shit? Yet for the low-low price of $120/year, we can stream music on day 1? I mean, come the fuck on. I think it's a brilliant move for Sony to try to corral people into their ecosystem , but not like this. Do not restrict my choices.

I will say that it would be nice to have media streaming still but across this generation I think I used it maybe twice. More features are always nice to have but I'm buying it to play games and Sony knows that. It's always a small vocal minority that actually cares about these features and an ever smaller fringe of that minority that actually uses them and these companies know that. At least now there's a myriad of inexpensive devices meant to do just that where when this generation started you would have spent as much as the console to get a dedicated device like that.
Same could be said of Xbox One's former DRM policy. There's likely only a small minority in 2013 who own these sort of devices without a persistent internet connection. So, why did every one lose their shit over what Microsoft was proposing?

My PS2 was my first and only DVD player. My PS3 is the only blu ray player I own. For a while, it was the only device I owned that could stream netflix. I play music through my sound system on it. I have tons of media stored on it. What has led so many of you to believe media consumption on these devices is a "fringe" thing. You really thing the opinions of a consortium of cheap gamers is consistent with the majority? Don't any of you realize that more people stream netflix on the ps3 than any other media device?

How are they core features when they're not in the PS4 OS at launch? I get the feeling that you're using "core features" to mean features that you expect every consoles to offer out of the box when I'm using it to mean the set of features that were announced as the main features for what the PS4 would offer. MP3 playback and media server functionality are obviously not core features if they're not in there.

Offering a stable build of the OS at launch is the highest priority of the team that is handling that stuff, so they're not going to add things that aren't ready yet just for the sake of a bullet point. They want to minimize the risk of catastrophic bugs as much as possible to avoid ruining the user experience when everybody first gets their new consoles.

What omissions did they make? It's the launch OS for a brand new console. There are only additions being made to it from the very basic stuff it did in the firmwares before 1.50. These are two things that they have not added in yet, plain and simple. If you want to make it out to be some conspiracy, go right ahead, but I won't participate in that discussion.

They talked about other features that were previously announced. They never announced MP3 support or media server support for the PS4. They were pretty specific when talking about media to only mention apps and their video store back in February and since then.

Blind PS3 updates? Following the launch of the PS3, they offered incremental updates to add features and improve things in the launch OS that were a part of their timeline for updating the system, which mainly focused on the big PS1/PS2 BC feature. That's true of every system out there since they're always unable to have every single feature ready for launch. You can go on Wikipedia and see how the PS3, Xbox 360, PSP, Vita, and even the Wii U were handled post-launch.

Nowhere did I say you can't criticize Microsoft or Sony, but the Microsoft discussion was pretty far off-topic for this thread and veered into the fanboy discussion that probably should not have happened in the first place.
Your argument is circular, though. DLNA and mp3 playback aren't core features because they didn't include it? Ok, but that fails to explain why they weren't included. How can these things be that obtrusive? So, Music Unlimited will work but not local playback? If they're so focused on the "core" gaming side of things, why bother with that? Or blu ray playback? Or any of the other streaming services like netflix and hulu? Every damn Sony device can play music. The vita can PLAY music. Hell, Sony e-readers can PLAY music. The PS4 OS is so terribly complicated it couldn't handle these lines of code? You sincerely believe this?

I understand what you're saying about incremental updates, but, dude, these features are BASIC. How do you revert back from your last OS? Do we have any software engineers in the building, tonight?!? Anyone? I really must be ignorant about this matter because I could have sworn this wasn't how development worked. I get this OS may built completely from the ground up, but shouldn't its design philosophy be somewhat congruent with its last iteration?

I've already said that I hope this stuff is patched in. I do believe, however, that it will happen much sooner because people spoke up about it. You're the same person who couldn't believe people still listened to podcasts, so it's unsurprising that you don't believe they actually listen to them...on their playstations.

Goodness. Figured out, you have me! I come to CAG on my downtime just to launch polemics about features I've never even heard of or used.

I don't know where you're getting your numbers from, but I need receipts. Show me the receipts! Playstation is and has always been a multimedia device. Need I remind you:

Not to take the debate further down the rabbit hole but it would be nice if PS1 disc support was on the PS4 since a toaster could probably run those games now and it was all software based emulation on the PS3. In any event with so much PS3 content I plan on keeping both hooked up anyway. If anything leaves my TV setup it's the 360 first. :)
Since it doesn't play CDs I would suspect it has something to do with that and like someone else postulated them just not paying the licensing costs.

Gamestop and Amazon are both having PS+ codes for 30$ on BlackFriday. I'm definitely gonna buy at least 2.
I'm seriously thinking about just grabbing two years instead of any games myself, really seems like the better investment these days.

just because you dont use a feature doesnt mean that other people dont. if you dont care that doesnt mean other people shouldnt. personally i use DLNA and mp3 playback almost every day on my ps3.

but anyway, im pretty excited about free Binary Domain and Dragon's Dogma. both are games that ive almost bought many many times but never quite pulled the trigger on.
Also remember that we as the hardcore and tech savvy aren't the majority of their long term install base or targeted demographic beyond early adoption.

Persona 4 Golden isn't on there yet and it's the best game on the platform. I say you can buy a Vita and get Persona like I did then just feast off everything you get from Plus.
That was my plan as well but then a string of awesome PS+ vita sales hit and I couldn't help myself. Like I said earlier, if you're a PS+ member you are better off not buying any Vita games... unless you MUST play something right away.

Same could be said of Xbox One's former DRM policy. There's likely only a small minority in 2013 who own these sort of devices without a persistent internet connection. So, why did every one lose their shit over what Microsoft was proposing?
Perception is everything. The way they presented it was terrible and made worse by confirming all the leaks leading up to it. Sony was brilliant because they never said no DRM, they just said they weren't doing what Microsoft was. A console is after all DRM at it's core and Microsoft just wanted to take it a step further.

Weird, I don't recall every saying I couldn't believe people still listen to podcasts. I believe I simply asked if people do. But interpret it however it bests suits your argument I guess.

Also I never said my numbers were fact. I said I'd be willing to bet, which means they're my own personal estimations. I know it's hard to think that opinion and fact are two different things, but you'll figure it out.

Finally, I am incredibly baffled by this logic that if it was in a previous iteration, it's required to be in all future iterations going forward. Nothing can change I guess. I really hope the PS4 supports an RF adapter, because the PS1 and PS2 did and that's a feature that's BASIC. Plus, I asked for it so I'm going to start raising a stink about it. Excuse me while I start my petition.

No, I was defining what core features are. They're the features that are core to the console's design, hence the name.

I don't know why they weren't included and I never said I knew why they weren't included. They were probably not essential to the experience that they wanted to provide at launch, so they're on the backburner for later updates. Media server support would be the main way to even get MP3s onto the PS4, so those two could probably be reliant on each other.

Where did I say that they were focused on core gaming features with the OS? They have a bunch of multimedia apps coming at launch, Blu-ray and DVD support, and even a browser for all of the porn you could ever want, so they have a decent starting point with that stuff. They're just focusing on the features that they want to offer at launch.

Where the fuck did I say the OS is so complicated that it can't handle MP3s? You're straying the line where I just stop engaging this dumb discussion because you're making up a bunch of shit that you claim I said and then spouting crap like "it only requires a few lines of code". If it's so easy, go apply to work at Sony because they'd kill to have somebody that can fix all of their problems with a few lines of code.

If you're losing an argument, generally it's considered best practice to make things up and pretend people said things they didn't in order to prove your point.

Losing an argument? On what grounds? @Frisky is playing his usual game of semantics, and if I recall correctly, you said you didn't realize people still listened to podcasts the other day. And, really, it's not even that serious. No one is behind closed doors at Sony so all of this is conjecture.

I don't know what I'm supposed to gather from someone saying a device won't support mp3 playback for the sake of stability. It just sounded like you were suggestig such a feature might not play nice with everything else. Thus, my "too complicated" remark. What I posit is that if this is the case, it seems unlikely that Music Unlimted and other media functions should work. And, yes, while I possess no programming knowledge, it only seems logical that a function as ubiquitous as mp3 playback would be relatively simple to code. I mean, I can't think of a single media device released in recent history that doesn't play it, including the VITA. There's never a reason to launch personal attacks, though. *Woosah*, dudes.

Everytime I visit the PSN Weekly Deals thread, I get nothing but a myriad of posts about things that aren't weekly PSN deals.

Way to piss all over me.

Now I feel like I got burned on this one.

I don't understand what DLNA is but apparently its something Sony established?

Also, what's so hard about playing mp3's? I thought that was an easy thing to do.

My Vita froze again downloading Sine Mora -_-
my vita freezes everytime i try to download something i have to turn the system completely off. Then go back into the psn store and then go into my download list and download it. If i try just to hit download the thing just freezes up. Dont know if its a system problem or what

DLNA is a specific form of streaming video, music, and pictures from a computer/media server to another device.

Take the debate elsewhere.  This is the PSN thread, not the "I'm right, you're wrong, I need MP3s and Media Player capability, No you don't." argument thread.

That usually only happens when there's damage from too much piss. Luckily my Vita doesn't freeze since its piss free.

[customspoiler='Clicky For Reply-y']I didn't say adding MP3 support would destabilize the OS. I said that the focus of the launch OS is to focus on the core features that they've built the system around so that they're offering a polished, stable build that makes the launch user experience as good as it can be. MP3 and media server support obviously wasn't part of that plan, so they're not core features for the PS4.

Why would the lack of MP3 support mean that Music Unlimited, Netflix, Youtube, etc. should cease to function? That's a weird thing to suggest.

The PSP did not have MP3 support at launch. The Vita was advertised as a portable media player and gaming machine, so it obviously supported that stuff since they were going for a "It's like an iPod Touch, but with real games!" thing there. From the start, Sony's talked about its multimedia capabilities in terms of apps and the video store.[/customspoiler]

And that's it for me on the topic.

This happens to me as well when I download things from the store. I just let it sit for like 3 minutes and then it finally starts downloading.

Yes, father?

Honesty, what the fuck do you want us to talk about? The OP is probably the most exhaustive on the site. What information are you lacking? Should we sit in silence? Or, even better, have yet another mastubatory exchange about our backlogs???

This thread is about value proposition. A part of that equation, sir, is information. I didn't even know about yesterday's PS4 FAQ until I came here.

Looking forward to finally trying out Dragon's Dogma. Is Dark Arisen a sequel? Or some sort of GOTY thing?

Like he mentioned it's basically the original game plus an expansion. If you can get a copy of the vanilla game for a couple days and create a save you're supposed to get more content in Dark Arisen as well.

Okay, Hotline Miami has won me over. Going back to ace the levels has made me appreciate it much more.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is an excellent game. All you that haven't played it yet are in for a treat.
I didn't know a thing about it until I saw it on PS Plus but now I'm looking forward to it.

Shit, did I miss the circle jerk?

Well said. Very funny!
I don't think I've ever seen one of your posts and not been annoyed.

Shit, did I miss the circle jerk?
The big circle jerk I remember was yesterday when we were talking about why we think the PS3 is a better console than the 360. It was great!

I may be alone on this, but DAE think PS+ is better than Microsoft's Games with Gold?

I don't think I've ever seen one of your posts and not been annoyed.
You're completely unprompted hostility cracks me up every time.

Killer line up for this month. Soul Sacrifice, Binary Domain, and Ibb & Obb were all in my cart at one time or another. And on top that we get Dragon's Dogma and Oddworld! Excited to play Stranger's Wrath... If for no other reason then try to scrub Munch's Odyssey from my memory.

The big circle jerk I remember was yesterday when we were talking about why we think the PS3 is a better console than the 360. It was great!
Then someone ruined it because they can't play MP3s on the PS4, so Sony is the most consumer unfriendly company in history. I won't mention who that person was.

It was Breakfuss. Breakfuss was the jerk that ruined the circle jerk.

I'm also excited about this lineup. The only game I have is BD. I was thinking of getting DD:DA and SS during BF, but this will do just fine! PS+ has saved me so much money!
Sweet mother of god :O The only one I have is BD and that was a gift from a friend. PS+ just rocked my world!! Also, I stopped having issues while downloading stuff to my Vita by getting close to the router. Dunno if that helps or not, but it seems to work or never freeze when I am close to my router.

Lol now I need to get a good discount on PS+ lol

Sometimes if I'm having download issues, I'll put socks on my hands and walk in a counter clockwise circle 17 times, while balancing my Vita on my head. Works every time.
