I'm so sorry Frisky. I did not mean to offend and am totally aware that to assume makes an ass out of both u and me. I guess I'll quit posting anything related to PSN news on the site. That said--and from one Ohioan to another--would you at least consider starting a new PSN megathread on an annual basis or rebooting your thread as a wiki so that as soon as news of new PSN content breaks somebody can immediately come in and update the headline? Or even a weekly spin off thread which details that particular week's PSN offerings??

I also want to sincerely apologize to everyone else who took offense to my starting that thread. I'm not here to start fights. I'm here to find deals and discuss my favorite pastime with like minded folks.
I'm not offended or anything, but I've made my point clear when your last thread was merged into here as to why I think reposting stuff from this thread doesn't make much sense compared to reposting things from some of the other megathreads. So it's okay.

I don't have any plans to do a weekly thread, a wiki thread, or stuff like that. There's no need to turn the thread into a wiki when the deals are posted just once a week. Nothing really comes up the rest of the week that would warrant that. Relevant news on upcoming deals and PS+ content gets posted in the second post.

I'll make a fresh, new thread when I have some things to change or when Cheapy decides to do it for me in a way that confuses the hell out of me.

Wait so Darksiders fo free :O ... mmmm I already beat the game and don't think I have enough time for a second play through, but dang is it tempting. I wished Just Cause 2 or Borderlands were offered again since I missed out on those.
For what it's worth about 24 out of 34 IGC games have been PSN or PS1 games in the US.
Please excuse my ignorance, but what are the "IGC Games"?

Definitely not trying to bitch about PS+...I have found it to be an amazing value. Darksiders 1 was one of my favorite games of 2010. Really cool that more people get to experience it.

For people wondering about Stardrone, it's actually pretty fun. You slingshot a ship around a level with gravity pulls to collect stuff. The last levels are actually pretty rough, but luckily the trophies don't require gold medals on all stages, just a bronze minimum.

I played all of it on ps3 except for the last level, which I transferred over to Vita to beat. I think the controls are slightly better on Vita.

And I have no complaints about it being cheap for ps+ because it was only $4 for cross-buy anyway...

I suggest people play the demo cause I thought it was boring and annoying.

On another note, I got my 100% in Tokyo Jungle, wooo! Now I gotta decide if I want to finish unlocking the rest of the creatures or move on to another game.
Maybe i'm in the minority here but I preferred the PS+ days where we got PSN games and PS classic games.
You're not alone. :)
I enjoy the PSN games, but the PS Classics never did anything for me. I think trophies actually play a huge part of it. I'm not saying I'll never play a game without trophies (I bought FFVII and Odin Sphere when they were on sale) but I do prefer to play a game with trophies in it. I think a lot of people feel similar to the way I do, but maybe I'm overestimating the power of trophies...
I think a lot of people feel that way. Trophies don't have the sway with me that achievements do, but I remember thinking the Xbox Originals idea was cool until I realized they wouldn't have achievements. I think that's a big reason I never felt compelled to mess with them.

I think it just has to do with knowing you're not "progressing", so you want to play something that is adding to your total.

-on the Darksiders note-

Not thrilled with this weeks update (I know, me unhappy?! What a rare occurrence), but I am happy THQ is at least getting some cash.
Say what you want but Darksiders sure beats Mega Man.
I second that, don't get me wrong I love Mega Man, but rather have Darksiders

I'm not 100% proud to admit it, but that's pretty much exactly how I feel.
I haven't played my PS3 for weeks. Been spending all my game time on the Vita
I love my Vita. I forgot how awesome it is to just sit back with a handheld at home while half-watching something on Netflix that I've seen a million times (been re-watching Arrested Development and Star Trek TOS while playing Dokuro).

With a hot pizza and a cold beer, this is the life!

I also find it hard to play games without trophies nowadays. I did play a ton of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls after I got the platinums though.

It's sad, but that has killed gaming for me too. I don't even want to boot up my PS2, since most of the games will come out again on PS3 with trophies.

I downloaded Mega Man 9/10, fired up 9... which reminded me that we had bought it on Wii. MM9 is impossible. I enjoyed MM10 much more, primarily due to easy mode.

Anyway, I also "purchased" Double Dragon Neon. Is it correct that it should download the "Demo"?

Yes. A lot of games download the demo and the unlock which is a very tiny download size.

If you can't bring yourself to play a game you're interested in because of lack of Achievements/Trophies, you have serious validation issues.

And yes, that is sad.

The point is we lose interest in them.

It's not like we're deciding between Final Fantasy VIII and Hannah Montana and going with Hannah Montana.

But if I'm deciding between Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy XIII, I'll probably choose the latter because of trophies.

Do you guys recommend earthworm jim and dungeon hunter (wished this was for Vita)? I know its 2 bucks, but hard to find time to play games now a days

The point is that you're still sad. The hyperbolic comparison doesn't validate you one bit. Why? Because you're defining success based on what the Big Brother tells you is success. With no trophies, you decide for yourself what is success. If you're losing interest because of no trophies, it means you don't actually like the game. What you like is feeding your OCD addiction to trophy hunting.

Haha, yes, I like trophies because Big Brother told me to. You saw my true self.

isn't trophies like in game challenges? What's wrong with liking challenges?

And yes, i love listening to movies while playing my vita. haha

Trophies have definitely influenced what games I play as well. Not quite to the point where I'll completely overlook a game that doesn't have trophies, but still.

Well it always doesn't mean it is challenging, look at the walking dead, hanna montana, any pixar game.

On the subject of trophies, who cares if someone only plays games because it has trophies, it isn't hurting anyone.

I like hunting trophies but I only play games that I would have played either way. When I had my PS1/PS2 I always tried to 100% complete a game (the ones I loved) anyway so trophies are just an extra incentive for me.

I really never understood the hatred towards them, past people not wanting to look lazy by not completing them.

Like look at Metal Gear Solid 4, before they implemented trophies, the game had a bunch of emblems you could complete. Some people wanted to do them all, others didn't give a damn, but in the end it didn't hurt anyone. The only difference with trophies is that you have "proof" that "you did it".

Regarding trophies/achievements. I think they are good and bad. When done right they can be fun to go for, but a lot of times they are, "do something stupid over and over". Those ones are all kinds of wrong. But... I too find a game without them at all to be less appealing. And yes I'm a little OCD. LOL!

I like ones that make me play a little different or go out of my way to experience something I might have missed. Ones I don't like are the ones that require you to do insane things. Seriously, some of them are less fun than banging my head against a wall. Like all the collect a million things ones or the play through the game 4 times ones. I'm no completionist but I do feel like games without trophies don't encourage me to explore and experiment nearly as much as they used to.

Correction: Some of the worst are ones that let you plat games just by playing the game normally... Fight night or Enchanted Arms!

I will never understand why some people won't play games because of lack of trophies or that the game is older and it doesn't have online so you can't get online trophies/achievements so you don't play it.

Enjoying the Achievements/Trophies is one thing but not playing games because they don't have them is fucking stupid. Why do you play games if not to have fun? To me, if gaming ever becomes more than something to do in my free time for FUN i will stop playing games, when my fun hobby becomes a chore it's clear that it's no longer a hobby that interest me.

Let me put it this way. I 100% Metal Gear VR missions on PS1. If it was in one of these PS3 remakes with trophies, I would be pissed because I would have to do it all over again. I was going to go back and play some games like sly cooper, but now I might as well play it on PS3 for trophies and the 'better' graphics. With all the rereleases it makes playing a PS2 version less desirable, because I can get more benefit by playing it on PS3. I don't hunt trophies per se, but I like documentation that I did something in game in case I lose my save file. Back in the day save files were worth keeping, now they aren't really important if you have trophies.

And I'll never understand why people feel their opinion is superior to others... Some people enjoy different things. Judging their opinions like they were wrong is fucking stupid. You enjoy your games your way. Let others enjoy the extra gratification achievements bring.

My issue with trophies is that they hardly gauge a person's skill level or dedication to completion. I like having them for the sake of documenting what I'm playing (hence my Frobisher Says! complaints earlier today), but their arbitrary nature otherwise annoys me. "Defeat 1,000 enemies in under 5 seconds". Really? 1 platinum out of hundreds of games and I've no shame.
Do you guys recommend earthworm jim and dungeon hunter (wished this was for Vita)? I know its 2 bucks, but hard to find time to play games now a days
I hear you on this. If you like old school very difficult platformers then Earthworm Jim is as good as it gets (assuming you can ignore a few dated quirks like no offensive moves while jumping, awesome designs though). Dungeon Hunter Alliance (the Vita version) will be on sale this week (according to the PS Blog podcast) but likely not with an additional PS+ sale. Someone has commented that it's best in local multiplayer and horrible in single player if that factors in your decisions at all.

I wish Baulder's gate or Champions of Norrath would come over to PSN. Now those were true dungeon crawlers with epic loot.

I really hope Snowblind studios gets another chance on the consoles soon, I bought War of the North full price to support them.

As I mentioned earlier, it feels like you're wasting time. Also who would want to play something that they know is literally impossible to 100%? It is EXTREMELY discouraging to not only know that NO ONE is playing ____ game online (so it basically has less value by default), but to also know that you won't ever be able to actually "complete" it either.
That is 100% untrue... you just need to know what lists require skills / dedication and what lists are just time sinks.

*WARNING* Shameless self promotion *WARNING*
I've personally...
 • 100%ed both the US and Japanese version of Spelunker HD, which includes beating / completing the WHOLE EX mural on both versions.
 • Platinumed Spelunker Black.
 • Platinumed Lost Planet 2, which requires getting #1 in the world on a leaderboard.
 • Actually managed to platinum Black Ops Declassified.
 • Beat Tactical Challenge 6 and ultimately platinumed Vanquish.
 • Actually managed to maintain a game of Droplitz for 2 hours.
 • and probably a few other "impressive" trophies I can't think of at the moment...

So if you don't think at least some of those achievements indicate skill, than I really don't know what to say.

I think lots of us who are into trophies now, are the same people that beat all the optional Weapons on FF7, or played through getting all the endings on CT, or even speed ran through old megamans/etc. The difference is that we only had our word to tell people that we did those other feats, and even then it seemed illusory. With trophies there is concrete(i know not really, but like a digital footprint) that I can look back and say, oh wow, I havnt played Bayonetta in 3 years, but wow I can't believe I beat Infinite Climax so long ago. We are still playing the same, it's just more incentive. I remember playing Saints Row 2 and thinking how awesome it is, but I even read an interview of THQ saying they were gonna patch trophies in and how cool it is gonna be. The exact same game, but they slacked and never got the trophies patched in, so the incentive is to play less saints row 2. Borderlands 1 had like 10 trophies for each dlc, much like sr3 has for dlc, but now borderlands 2, no matter how awesome it is, only has 3 trophies per dlc, so that is a major turnoff from buying the dlc for that game. IDK rant.

edit/ yeah i love RE4, and even with only 10ish trophies, I still played and beat it... but I think I would have played it more had it been given the full 50/plat trophies. seems like laziness when games dont have (full) trophies, and seems like great dedication/fanfare when they patch trophies into the games, i.e. uncharted, MGS, and a few others. I'm still waiting for 50cent to get the japanese trophy patch, or even that frobisher says vita trophy patch...

and yeah i go for lots of trophies, top 100 in usa, but first plat i got was cod waw and that was 100% with zombie dlc and that was no easy feat. 2nd plat was matt hazard, ugh, dare i say more ;). I try using gamefly for easy trophies, but ill have jeopardy at my house for a month and not play it and just send it back cuz i cant get myself to play unfun games for easy trophies most of the time, especially now with more work/kids/etc. plus the game i play more than anything is call of duty multiplayer, which has 0 trophies most of the time. so play however you want to play. live and let live. to each their own. ///

also yeah some trophies are just painful. getting 100% at kane n lynch dogdays, bulletstorm, rogue warrior... these are painful memories. lol

Yeah, but they're also only about 1/3rd as enjoyable as the originals too.

Dust 514's Open Beta launches January 22:
CCP Games today announced that on January 22, 2013, DUST 514 will officially move into Open Beta, free to download and play for anyone with a PlayStation®3. The path for the DUST 514 Open Beta was paved when, on January 10th, CCP achieved the major milestone of merging DUST 514 with EVE Online on the Tranquility server hosting the EVE Universe.

By uniting DUST 514 and EVE Online on the same single-shard server, CCP has accomplished something unprecedented in videogame history: a single persistent online universe of incredible depth and scale that bridges the PC and console platforms in real time. Furthermore, this marks the first time two games from different genres, a space combat simulator and a first-person shooter, have been linked together into one, massive online experience.

“The launch of the DUST 514 Open Beta is another step towards our long-term vision for CCP and EVE,” said Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP. “But this is just the beginning. As we have done with EVE Online, in the coming weeks, and for years to come, we will continually improve upon and add to the DUST 514 experience , as well as add deeper integration between the two games and their communities.”

Now Eve Online’s New Eden is an even bigger and more diversified universe where two games of interstellar combat exist concurrently and impact each other constantly.

DUST 514 Open Beta Begins January 22, 2013

On January 22nd the wait will be over when Open Beta begins, but for DUST 514 mercenaries currently in the closed beta test, careers truly begin as of today. With no further character resets planned, every shot, every battle and every contract now counts.

More details about what happens to the existing mercenaries, load-outs, and corporations of DUST 514 during the brief migration period can be found at http://community.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&nbid=74180

Players not currently in the DUST 514 closed beta still have a chance to get a head start before Open Beta officially begins.

Available now through the PlayStation Store, the DUST 514 Mercenary Pack grants closed beta access, 40,000 Aurum and a host of in-game items for $19.99 (a $50 value), all of which will remain intact as DUST 514 rolls into the Open Beta. In addition, as a special bonus for players in the Closed Beta test, anyone who plays a match before January 22 will receive a 100,000 Skill Point bonus to take into the Open Beta.

yeah advic, that's why the only borderlands 2 dlc i have is the torque dlc they were giving away free one night. ill wait til the rest is on sale at least. whereas borderlands 1 im 100% even with moxxi nightmare.
And I'll never understand why people feel their opinion is superior to others... Some people enjoy different things. Very true. Trophy discussions really seem to bring out the superiority complex in those that say they don't like trophies.
My issue with trophies is that they hardly gauge a person's skill level or dedication to completion. My favorite part about achievements/trophies is that it documents everything I play on XBox and PS3. Just recently I went through all the games I played in 2012 to see which ones were my favorites, and it was as simple as pulling up my trophies and achievements.

I remedied my OCD with having a random amount in my wallet by buying Earthworm Jim and UNO, and now have an even $30.

Until next time where I end up with $xx.01. Damn you, virtual change.

Trophies are best in online games. i LOL so hard when people go online and whine about online trophies; they keep games alive. A game that otherwise would be dead, becomes wildly populated once you put in a 'play 1000 online games' achievement in. i don't like it when they're 'win xx games', because then people resort to cheap tactics. but no doubt my favorite trophies are when devs make online servers more populated, because i wouldn't buy half of these games if 'online' wasn't an enticing feature, and there's nothing more annoying than wanting to play a game in online mode and being screwed because no one else is online

Because to some of us, getting trophies IS fun.

There are many trophies that definitely show a person's skill level.

I won't not buy a game (yay for double negatives) because it has impossible trophies if I really want it, but if I'm only mildly interested in a game and I find out there are some long ass online trophies or the platinum is ugly, I'll skip it, especially with my backlog. Although with some of my games now that have long ass online trophies, I decided not to go for the platinum just so I can make a bigger dent in my backlog. I'll go for the offline trophies but skip the online ones. However, I have bought quite a few games that I wouldn't normally have bought because either the platinum looked awesome or the trophies weren't too bad. I wish I never did though as that's the main culprit of my immense backlog.
Very true. Trophy discussions really seem to bring out the superiority complex in those that say they don't like trophies.
Particularly because not collecting trophies has no impact on the game. People that complain act as if you had to obtain trophies to play the full game or unlock stuff (this is how it used to be and it was nice). Don't like trophies? Guess what? You can totally ignore them and you will be fine and your game experience will be the same. Don't see how having trophies or people liking them affects the games you play in any way.
