:ps4: Foul Play - $2.00 to $100.00 [customspoiler='Fine Print'] :ps4: Foul Play is a part of the PlayStation Heroes program, which means that you can pay your choice among a variety of price points for an item that is usually a theme for entries into a contest to win some prize with most of the money going to a charity. There are no details at the moment for what the prize for buying Foul Play offers, so I'll post that whenever it's announced.

Edit: From the PlayStation Heroes app on PS4, the Foul Play promotion is for a trip to PlayStation Experience in December. Once you purchase the game, you're supposed to go here to register for the actual contest, though you should wait until the page is updated for the PlayStation Experience promotion instead of whatever it's on at the moment.[/customspoiler]

Got the plat in First Light after installing it yesterday morning. Very cool game. Might check out Second Son if I can find a BB that still has a copy.

Wait first light has a plat?  I thought DLCs usually don't

and yeah if you liked FL i'd definitely grab SS, its still $20 today ($16 after GCU) at BB and worth it

Anybody received their 10% off coupon yet?  I'm trying to wait until the last possible moment to buy Pinball Arcade Season 2, but I guess there's no point in waiting if the coupon isn't going to come before the PS Store updates.

Maybe they'll wait till Tuesday since that's when the store updates, and no to your question. My PS+ hasn't been extended either.

Nope, mine expires on November 2015. But now that you mention it, it may have something to do with the extra 5 day thing for the DDOS down time.
Yeah I think that they extended the PS+ for 5 extra days, so it looks like you renewed PS+ and put all of those at the top of the list again.

I really hate the download list sorting (or lack of). Probably the worst thing about the PS Store.

When it happens, people in this thread will be talking about it, so that's a quick way to find out.

Featuring unique vehicles like snowmobiles, jetpacks, unicycles, skis and motorbikes!

Wow, Brandish. That's a game I hadn't heard of since SNES. I'd heard Xseed was working on it but I don't know why they'd bother since no one even remembers it. I don't think it did that well at the peak of Japanese games popularity, I can't imagine it doing better now.

Know it's a launch title and doubt many still play it but does Hot Shots Golf (Vita) still require an online pass? My local GS has an used copy for $6.99 with case but if it still requires the pass I might just get it digitally.

I believe it still does. I don't think Sony's removed online passes for their games that had them.

Hot Shots is a game that Gamestop partnered with the publisher so you'll get an online pass even if you buy it used. I don't know if it's still ongoing but if it is, it'll print on your receipt. If it doesn't, it's an easy enough return, or maybe you'll like the game enough to keep it anyway. There is a lot of content.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll call and see if it will print a code.

So called and they believe they gave all the codes for that promotion. Still might swing by this week and try and nothing else return it if it does not print one.

I remember buying Hot Shots Golf Vita new (gutted) and walked out of GameStop got home before work and opened the case (the guy didn't place a sticker on the opening of the case). Saw nothing but the Vita game card. Looked on YouTube at some unboxing videos and saw that there was an online pass. I quickly went back to the same GameStop and told the GameStop rep that this game is suppose to come with an online pass (nothing printed out on a receipt). He said "Oh, let me look at another case then". He walked over and checked another gutted copy on the shelf and noticed there was an online pass in there. He asked me if I could redeem it in store. I said "sure" since I had my iPhone with me. So I went to the PSN Store website. Redeemed the code and it accepted it. I put the pass into the existing Hot Shots Golf Vita game case I had and left.

Weird experience. Because I was just going to return it to them and purchase it online thru an eBay buyer but saw GameStop new price and couldn't pass up on it.

Well, that's an instance of them selling gutted games as new. In their system, your purchase was counted as a new purchase. The online pass prints out for preowned copies, not new games or games sold as new.

How do they even get away with selling opened copies as new? I think they should offer a discount to people that get gutted copies instead of being charged the "new" price. Also what's the difference between a used game & a gutted one??

It's the copy that is on display that people bring up to the counter when they want the game. Used games could be in any condition with no manual or whatever while the display copy is supposed to be the new copy minus the disc/card, though there are CAGs and others that swipe the Club Nintendo and other slips from the case that may be xlost experienced.

Apparently enough people remember it that everyone goes "Oh I remember hearing that was supposed to be really good!"

If it doesn't I might have an extra pass somewhere. If it still works and I can find it is another issue. PM me though if you pick it up and need one and I'll see if I can find it.

Brandish is a favorite of mine, I will likely pick that up. $20 seems steep though.

I didn't know it was $20. How is that expensive? It was a retail title in Japan so they're releasing it digital-only for less than half price. I might buy this day one.

Remember how the original Ys games had you attack enemies by ramming them whereas the recent ones actually play like modern games you'd want to play? This seems like another great Falcom update in the making. If it does well, I hope they update the later games just like Ys.

Probably well worth $20 but I think the issue with the price is that it's a six year old PSP game.

So what? Valkyria Chronicles is even older and the $20 price it launched at on PC catapulted it to the top of Steam's bestseller list. I think it was at the top of every retailer that sold it, actually.

Ironically, that guy's comment about the price is making me rethink purchasing Brandish. If the series is a favorite of his and he's unwilling to spend $20, it can't be that good. I'm thinking Xseed saw Valkyria's surprise success and now they're trying a similar thing, but they're forgetting that Valkyria has a cult following, and unlike Valkyria, they're releasing Brandish on a dead (PSP) and moribund (Vita/Vita TV) format.

The company's sales expectations must not be good either because according to neogaf, the staff worked on translating the game off the clock! So Xseed didn't even think the game was worth allocating company resources.

Brandish was announced for PSN around eight months ago so it's not like it's some quick cash grab. You don't seem familiar with how XSEED works as a company, if anything that they worked off the clock on it should make you feel better about what the employees think about the game if they're willing to do that.

People are willing to buy a port of VC for $20 because that's what the game on PS3 still sells for, was a new port, and VC is well loved with an established reputation. For a translation (not to discount the difficulty or work that goes into that) of a an existing remake that's not actually ported to Vita (though it works on Vita) of a game that most people won't even know they're more likely to balk at that price. I hope the price doesn't torpedo the sales though and XSEED stuff goes on sale so seldom though we may never get a sale on it. Hopefully it doesn't join the ranks of Trails in the Sky and Class of Heroes 2 where we spend years waiting for a sale. We really need a massive PSP PSN sale where everything's $5 and below.

Well, in all fairness I never played the psp rehash. I played them on snes, and they were quite good (I never knew it had a psp version in the series). I guess I wouldn't really have an issue paying 20 for the game, but the point was already made that it's a 6-7 yr old game. I can't complain being Sony tries to charge a full $40 on titles that have been out forever.

Speaking of Valkyria Chronicles, is Xseed or Sega, or anyone really going to bring over the 3rd one anytime soon?

We needs this!!!!

So much wrong.

I'm thinking Xseed saw Valkyria's surprise success and now they're trying a similar thing,
VC released on Steam two months ago. And you seriously think Brandish is a 'me too' situation?

If the series is a favorite of his and he's unwilling to spend $20, it can't be that good.
Or he doesn't have $20 to spend on a game right now?

The company's sales expectations must not be good either because according to neogaf, the staff worked on translating the game off the clock! So Xseed didn't even think the game was worth allocating company resources.
Or they just really wanted to make it but the company was already committed to other projects?

I realize it's fun to jump to conclusions, but c'mon.

I hope so. But I'm usually more optimistic than some. Honestly, I don't see why it wouldn't get ported sometimes in the future. Hopefully, we'll hear something once we get to E3 this year.

That's a funny joke. Did you see how Sega had to be dragged kicking and screaming to bring Yakuza 5 over along with the previous games on PSN?

Edit: Also, check out how eager they are to bring Phantasy Star Online 2 over to North America on PC or Vita.

Is it ok to play Suikoden 2 without playing 1?
There's no good reason to skip Suikoden 1 -- it's a snappy game and fairly quick to beat, as it predates the era we live in now where the norm is to pad out JRPGs into 70+ hour slogs. It's "ok" to play 2 without 1 but you'd be missing out on a classic.

It's not really fair to blame Sega. They would love to bring the games over but the sales obviously aren't there. I don't know the figures for Yakuza, Valkyria, or Phantasy Star, but do you know the numbers for Binary Domain? Brace yourself: in North America, sales totaled less than 20,000 copies across both platforms in its first month of sales. People really just don't buy Sega games anymore.

So what? They did a terrible job marketing Binary Domain and let it die by releasing it the week before Mass Effect 3, as far as third-person shooters go. They decided not to market people on the crazy story/characters that makes it endearing, but that it was a Japanese Gears of War clone that played well that nobody gave a shit about. It's at least made up for that on the back end with the PS+ deal and presumably through many Humble Bundle and Steam sales after word of mouth spread on that game.

Phantasy Star Online 2 is a free-to-play game that has received an English patch to the Japanese version for those that followed the guides to get set-up there, but still has yet to be released over here after whatever additional would be left to do to make it suitable for release here. It supposedly reached 2.5 million players with its Japanese release, so it has done well enough to get a big expansion every year that seems like a good reason to get western players in the fold on at least the PC version.

Valkyria Chronicles 3 is supposed to be a much better game than VC2, but they're reasoning for not bothering is because they released a $40 PSP in August of 2010 and it surprisingly didn't sell well. Part of the decline is that the fans were on PS3 and not necessarily on PSP, but Japan was PSP Central at this point and that rules all. The happy compromise would've been an HD collection on PS3 and/or Vita, but Sega isn't that sort of company to do anything that the fans want these days.

Yakuza is a weird situation, but it's odd that they can't just do the bare minimum in localization to appeal to the fanbase that it has in the west when they have Atlus now that could be the publishing arm that could easily do this series and other neglected Japanese Sega franchises. I'd love to see them grow to accommodate all of the SMT/Persona/EO stuff they did before alone with the rest of this stuff that Sega doesn't want to bother with since Atlus is experienced with this sort of stuff. Sega's a bad publisher at this point having dropped from a big name to a nobody with the only things making them relevant being Sonic and Atlus.

People always talking smack about the Bump System. I loved Bump combat.

You can say the same about Suikoden II. It released two weeks after Final Fantasy VIII, so of course no one played it. Short of rearranging their entire release schedules, what do you want them to do? If a title is ready to be shipped, they can't hold it back for long since every day the companies are spending money.

You might remember that the PSP Phantasy Star games, Valkyria Chronicles II, and the Dan Marshall DLC pack for Binary Domain were all on PSN and have since been removed. They presumably weren't generating enough revenue to keep them listed on PSN. Phantasy Star in particular is tricky to run because every online title in the series bar none has players looking to cyber. What is it about this series that attracts that behavior I don't know but Sega wouldn't be able to police that without hiring a team of moderators. I'll go out on a limb here and say it doesn't happen with Japanese players.

Valkyria was never going to get an HD collection because frankly, those are quick cash grabs for popular franchises. Valkyria never sold enough to get that treatment. Even Zone of the Enders, a Japanese mech game, sold well because it was originally packed with a Metal Gear Solid 2 demo.

Sega is not going to streamline operations with Atlus. Does Banana Republic work with Old Navy? Sega has already tried bare localization with Yakuza 3 - they removed a quiz minigame where you wouldn't be able to answer the questions unless you were well-versed in Japanese culture - and the fans cried bloody murder. They then released an installment of the series that featured zombies and guns prominently to appeal to Western audiences, but no one cared for that either. (The gameplay wasn't great, but the game scores points for featuring a serious zombie story.) So not including Yakuza 5, Sega has already released five Yakuza games in the West even when no one cared about them. You can't say they didn't do their part there. Say what you want about Sonic, but it's one of the few franchises that keeps their lights on.

There is one small silver lining: Phantasy Star Nova and Yakuza Zero have been announced for release in China. With exponentially more Chinese people who understand English than Japanese people who understand English, the lower living cost there and the weaker currency, this can mean more affordable translating in the future. Personally, it's crazy to me that Japanese publishers think China could be a more lucrative market than the West, but it might work and we'll see a renaissance of Japanese games.
