Might have to check out the slingtv stuff.  Seems like the $20 has the only channels my wife and I watch, minus the local sports network...

It is now. Will it be for long? Not so sure. I am sure most people think we are one of the most technologically advanced countries. Those people would all be wrong. South Korea is so much ahead of us it isn't funny. However, they also have large numbers of people who are addicted to the internet. You could argue we do too with all the people that can't get off of Facebook, but it is not on the same level.

With every baby on an iPad before they can walk, I will not be surprised if we start catching up over the course of this generation.
I'd say mobile matters a lot more than what they deliver to your door though. the trend seems to be to want internet access everywhere - while speed/bandwidth/etc matter in your house for the crapton of video streaming services people are drawn to, I'd much rather just have blanketed wifi/good cellular coverage in the city I live in that I can use whenever I want and a crappy 10m link at home. outside of video streaming and downloading ps games I don't really use my home internet anymore (unless I remember to turn my wifi back on on my phone).

google fiber has been nice to have here and they've spread way further than they said originally. but the competition change was really the benefit for me - we already had multiple cable providers in some areas (time warner, surewest, comcast further south than me, plus the telecoms) but when google started digging I was able to get on fttp throttled to 100m from surewest with cable service for around $50 (?)/month (for the first year). It's crept up over two years to around $80/month but it's still pretty good with rock solid service. And google hasn't even finished digging in our city yet. time warner hasn't really done dick - they've increased speeds but their prices are still out of wack in comparison to the competition. to get a similar plan to what I have now on twc it'd be about a $60 increase. and that's after calling and talking to half a dozen people about it.

side note - around here when you're in a google fiber neighborhood it actually becomes a selling point and homes tend to sell quicker/for more than equivalent homes in other neighborhoods. that'll die eventually when the area is more saturated but I hope we can sell before that happens.

Is there a way to still watch local channels for free? I know they got rid of antenna's but is their still a way?
Your TV should have an ATSC labeled RF connector on it. Over the air channels should be in the clear. You just need an antennae with a regular cable type output to hook to that connector. Your TV should be able to scan for channels. Just change to that input and you should be able to find all the locals.

What have you been playing? I tried Infamous 1 a couple months back. It was playable but definitely a downgrade from native PS3.
just guilty gear xrd and some infamous 2. both played awesome - I was actually playing xrd against my ps4 self and there was very little difference (which also speaks to the quality of the ps3 port of the game). input lag just isn't that bad either and network vs lag was non-existent. I'll try some more stuff out before the trial runs out, but I continue to be impressed by it. it's a shame it'll always suck on vita unless you place the vita on top of your wireless router.

On that podcast I linked to several cities have indicated it helps bring in big businesses (or keep them from moving out). My office here is about 50 miles North of NYC. It is pretty rural area but not the sticks. Till about 6 or 7 years ago we couldn't get anything but T1s (1.5Mbps). We had two bonded together. I want to say $3000 or so with fees and taxes and tariffs. For a few years it was really tough trying to run a small to medium sized office (65 people including warehouse). Email attachments would frequently drag our 'network' down. Finally the local cable company started a Business class fiber division. We could get I think upto 50Mbps when they started but went for 20Mbps. They also offer 10Mbps but wouldn't do that on a new install due the costs to extend their network into our building.

Anyway over the last 3 or 4 years several other options opened up for fiber. One way to expensive and fast for our needs. We did add a second 50Mbps line. Mostly for redundancy.

I guess we would have survived on 3Mbps longer if we had to but we got a ton of complaints on how slow everything is.

I would argue both are equally important, and at least one operator seems to agree.

To be able to have truly high bandwidth low response time services like you typically want in a home, wireless just doesn't cut it. However, wireless is king for the way people live outside the home. That is why Comcast does all the Xfinity WiFi stuff. You have the fast speeds at home for time critical apps like gaming and have a large net of devices that allow you to use their service on the go. Too bad it seems to be shit in terms of reliability right now, but I think that will improve.

Wide area WiFi networks just do not seem ready for prime time. When they are often reliant on their competition for back haul there is no way they can ever be a lower priced option without a large change to how things are currently setup.

From BBS and internet discussion in here to abortion discussions at work, today has been most interesting.

Apparently a coworkers girlfriend works at CVS and a 16 year old girl walked in one day asking for the Plan B pill.  Earlier in the day the girl found out she was 6-7 weeks pregnant.  She had to be told that Plan B wasnt an abortion pill.  It doesnt quiiiiite work that way.

83 degrees in my office on Monday, today got here and it was 64 degrees. Pretty sure my fingers are starting to get frostbite. Is it that fucking hard to hit a nice 70 degree temp?

Man, we really need to work on sex ed in this country.

I was able to buy 2 $10 psn cards with the mystery $5 cert and another $15 one I already had. Worked fine. But the cashier had to scan the mystery cert page like 3 times at different times in the transaction. Your cashier probably fucked it up.
Yes, I remember last year the mystery cert was a pain in the ass to redeem.

the big problem is that there won't be a large change until something relevant that matters hits a critical mass. I'm sure there's plenty of engineers these days that could make sufficiently robust and cost effective blanketing wireless networks and tech but when the use case is so more people can periscope their lunch at chipotle no one will give a single fuck. maybe the silicon valley nerds will come up with something to solve some nutty business specific case (like google's homegrown multipath networking) and it'll spill to the masses by the time I retire in an isolated cottage in the alps.

edit - network distribution in poorer countries is a big one currently, I guess that could lead to something. lots of big money heading there to try and get their digs in the market while it's developing, mostly focused on mobile.

Good lord. That Uncharted bundle for $300 with a $50 gift card for later purchase is a fucking deal too for those that live close. Maybe that will help Sony not lose by so much over the holiday months.

ETA: $60 golds not too shabby either.

I have not seen much about it lately, but that program they were working on for low flying weather balloons with wireless access points in it looked pretty damn promising.

I know..I've got decisions to make...I don't need uncharted though since I've played them all. If another store has a better bundle for 300 and 50 gc, I may have to say goodbye to my star wars bundle for 400. Or see if I can make a profit off the star wars one before black friday..

Which brings up the idiocy of abstinence only sex education.

edit: moon'd

edit 2: I think John Oliver did a segment on that, yep.

Sell the code? Then use the GC for star wars?

I know plenty in here including pitfall don't believe the Broncos D is as good as the Ravens or Bucs were when they won the superbowl, but this article as well as some others pointing to this Broncos team actually being better on D.  So with a serviceable Manning, this team could easily compete for the superbowl...

Broncos D good at every level

Seems it is still going for 35 or so here. I am hoping for $20 maybe when everyone gets their PS4 Uncharted bundles.

I can't believe I voted for something over Resogun. But Rocket League will do that to you.

Treyarch decided to blend Smash TV gameplay with a Blood Dragon-esque vibe for BLOPS 3's "hidden" arcade game:
