Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Nine

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

I'm going to be checking some others today - I'd love to find a Super Paper Mario! Unfortunately, I think the one BB that doesn't really pull penny guides is all tapped out.

Picked up Frontlines and Stranglehold for a penny at BB yesterday.
I don't even own Frontlines.
(but I probably will at some point)

Stranglehold? That must have been in the huge Manhunt2/Conan drop I missed. I needed like 6 or 7 of those guides. Did anyone get the Metal Gear 4 DVDs?

On my way back home from a long trip, decided to stop by a GS thats usually out of the way, but they've been pretty cool about guides in the past, picked up a few things

Frontline
Folklore
NFS: Pro Street
Conan
RE: Umbrella Chronicles

I picked up a few more at another Best Buy today:

3x Super Paper Mario (Sealed)
1x Pups
1x Turok
1x Pokemon Battle Revolution

For anyone who is in NYC:
86th and Lexington still has several Hellgates, Frontlines, Turok, an EA Hardcover, and maybe some Sims stuff.
44th and 5th Ave is totally dry.
23rd and 6th has a Super Paper Mario, several Pups, and one or two Pokemon Battle Revolution, Turok, and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
Broadway and Houston has a few Pokemon Battle Revolution, Pups, Frontlines, and maybe a Turok and a Hellgate. I had to deal with the manager there to get them, though and I have a feeling he might have pulled them.

Took the Turok from 86th and Lex:) Where were the Frontlines and EA Hardcovers?I saw the Sims, but didn't know about them. Is the Pups guide on sale?

Maybe I didn't check well:p I just glanced for a minute really. What does the EA hardcover look like? What is it about really? I'm going back now actually:)
can the front page be updated?
Not unless whoever is updating CAG to 2.0 get moving and give me access to it. I keep getting an internal server error on it. So, until such a time as that problem gets fixed, there will be NO update to the second post.
It's a pretty cool book that has a lot of gaming industry history in it.
I'm sure it's probably a gaming history according to EA and from their perspective. Of course, in a book about EA, I wouldn't expect anything more than their proud history of being a monolithic succubus that devours any company they view as competition. I traded for a copy, which I have yet to open myself.

If you want a more complete and less EA based history of games, Gamespot did a whole perspective a while back. You can find it by following the link below:

Only problem is, the second post can't be updated by anyone but the mods or me. So, for now, we are SOL. It's weird though because half of the threads are pretty much like that for me for the first page of a thread, but the subsequent pages are all ok.

I picked up:
6x paper mario
4x nintendogs
1x PBR
1x Pokemon Mystery Dungeon

I hope fire emblem will penny out soon, and those hardcover zelda and mario guides.

What is PBR?

And yeah, my BB has tons of hardcover Assassins Creed, Zelda, and Marios:)

Is the Assassins Creed artbook/guide pennied yet?

I know it's obnoxious, but it's the easiest work around I can think of off the top of my feeble brain.

Only problem with that is, I don't really know what pennied this past time. I mean, Shrike was nice enough to send me the list that someone listed(including Super Paper Mario, Nintendo version), but I ended up losing the list.

If you have access to the first page(I have threads set to display 200 posts PER page here, so I only see two pages right now), I'm sure you can find the list by going over more current posts.

Oh and is there any way we could get a post written all in HUGE unmistakable YELLOW lettering to keep the damn chit chat about trading and what not to the respective threads? Cause, I just made this newest thread and we're already on page 2(by my settings). It's a little annoying when 30 friggin' people ask 'anything drop' or 'I got xyz and abc and need 123 and 456'. THERE ARE THREADS FOR THOSE THINGS PEOPLE!!!!
Anyone need some Sims guides? My BB is full of em:D
Funny thing is, I totally forgot to pick it up, even though I've been to those 4 I listed earlier and had seen it everywhere. I'm not sure why it slipped my mind like that. Is it that big, fat, short one with a bunch of smaller books in it or something? I'll have to head back tomorrow and pick one of those up.

The little sealed Sims boxset?

WTF, when did that drop to a penny?
The little sealed Sims boxset?

WTF, when did that drop to a penny?
I'm pretty sure it didn't. I was only aware of:
The Sims 2 (PC)
The Sims 2: Bon Voyage (PC)

Both from a while back, and I never see them around. Don't recall any mention of sims for a while in drops.

I wasn't sure if that was the Sims 2 guide or not, I was just wondering. I've haven't seen just a plain Sims 2 guide that I know of, then.

IATCAG, I had that problem and someone suggested putting it to 20 posts per page (I had it set to the maximum), and the problem hasn't happened since. Try messing around with that, and it might magically work.

Honestly, ever since the switch to CAG 2.0(which was a downgrade in performance site wise imo compared with the original), even my lowly high speed connection hasn't been fast enough to load all of the extraneous crap added to it. Or at least, due to all of the 'improvements', the site has loaded slowly and takes friggin' forever now, even on high speed.

I think I switched to 200 posts per page because of wanting to have MORE posts per page and not that many pages to flip through.

I'll try it, but I know I'm going to hate flipping through 10+ pages of posts instead of not even two.

FINALLY got to update the second post(had to switch from 200 posts down to a meager 50 now though :( ). I only listed the following, though I'm pretty sure the MGS Saga Vol. 2 DVD dropped too, since they were MIA at TWO BB stores I checked recently.

Guides listed for the July 2nd drop @ Best Buy(let me know if I missed any, ok) I'd also like verification on WHICH version of the Twilight Princess pennied:

Animal Crossing Wild World(Nintendo Power)
Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess(Nintendo Power)
Pokemon Battle Revolution(Nintendo Power)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red/Blue(Nintendo Power)
Pups: The Official Nintendogs Companion(Nintendo Power)

KINDLY KEEP ALL POSTS WHICH DO NOT SPECIFY NEW GUIDE DROPS IN THE
REDUCED PRICE GUIDE DISCUSSION THREAD.

KINDLY KEEP ALL TRADE POSTS IN THE GAME GUIDE TRADING THREAD OR IN PMs.
TRADING DOES NOT OCCUR IN THE DEALS FORUM.

That was fun.

Edit: Okay, I cleaned out a boat load of miscellaneous posts. Let's keep things streamlined, folks.

I've scanned the first couple of posts and searched, but I'm unclear on the difference between the second post and the wiki, other than that one is listed by date, the other by store, and the wiki is clearly out of date.

If there are issues with updating the second post, can the wiki be updated?

EDIT: sorry, I wrote this post last night and just posted it this morning before seeing the above mod message, so apologies if it's OT. I'm just hoping for an unambiguous single source for drop information, unless there's a reason to have both a post in a thread *and* a wiki.

Well, it's generally the first Monday of the month for Best Buy, but not always. Sometimes it will happen on a weird mid-Wednesday. Not all stores (meaning GS, TRU, BB) penny guides at the same time, but usually if a guide is pennied at one BB, it is pennied at all BBs. And it's generally frowned upon to ask when the next drop is or if a drop occurred - if one happens, we know usually within hours. Many CAGs go out of their way to check on guides.

And I think THIS stuff, maybe along with a rules section, should go in the first post. I was surprised it wasn't there.
Sorry man:( Which PokeDex is pennied? I tried the pocket and the large and both were reg. price.
Don't worry about it :D It's not in the first post, and it's hard to get this info when there are 10 pages or so of other posts.

And according to the wiki, the pokedex dropped on May 21st, BUT has the specific SKU of 7963778.
Pokemon 10th Anniversary Pokedex Collector’s Edition 7963778
It would have to have that SKU on the barcode to be pennied.

Thanks Gwen. I wish every CAG was on the same settings for posts, since it'd be nice if we could repost this 'warning' at the top of EVERY full page of posts to kind of limit the chatter a bit.

If you don't mind, I may add this to the first post and change some of my own posts on this thread into the warning. I know it won't help all that much, but it's worth a shot.

That's a good idea and I am sure it is possible. Maybe not in the post form that you are thinking, but there could be another header before the posts start. It'd be great if the powers that be considered this for this thread and several others that need it as well.

People seem to be getting so anal lately on anything even in the sliver of being off topic and with the way things are going I dont think it is a bad thing for the thread to have some clutter.

Big deal you have to do a tad bit more wrist and finger work but it sure beats a nice clear list and clean thread that any lurker can come by and get a nice list made out with little effort especially now with the hoarders getting all sophisticated and skimming the threads on the move on thier fancy cell phones... lol

I see your point, but is it really that hard to post non-guide deals in the discussion thread? I mean, all a person has to do is subscribe to it and then it appears in their list, so it wouldn't take any more effort to put it in there. Besides, the point of THIS topic is for guide drops and the point of the discussion topic is for everything else. Respectfully, I have yet to understand why that is such a hard concept to grasp.

Come here to post/view deals. Go there to talk about potential drops/guides you picked up in the store today/etc. It's quite simple, really.
