Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Nine

Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Oh and Derrick, the reason I keep asking for the crackdown on this thread(and others ask on other threads) is, like it or not, we have lives outside of having to re-make a thread every 2 damn months because people can't post other superfluous posts where they belong.

This thread ISN'T for trading, there's a whole board for that purpose and a thread specifically for it and while I was even wanting to 'brag' about my scores in times past in the main thread, now that I'm the one running it it makes it umpteen times more difficult to weed through and find pertinent drop info when you have 90 people asking 'any drop today' or 'i got xyz and abc guides'.

I mean, it's good to know that people are still scoring the guides, even though it looked like BB and the other chains were cracking down on selling them for a bit, but I made a seperate thread for that to alleviate the clutter.

And if you're having a 'hoarder' nabbing all of the guides from your local store(s), then that just means you need to get there sooner rather than later or stash stuff in a spot NO ONE will look in so you can get at least the ones you want.

Hmm that's kind of silly I'd pay $1 each for 'em and shipping. You coulda quadrupled your profits bro.

Is it really that hard to copy and paste over two posts every two months? If it's really such a hassle I can start making these reduced price game guides threads if you want.
Big deal you have to do a tad bit more wrist and finger work but it sure beats a nice clear list and clean thread that any lurker can come by and get a nice list made out with little effort especially now with the hoarders getting all sophisticated and skimming the threads on the move on thier fancy cell phones... lol
I see. Let's change the name of the site to "Cheap Ass Gamer With Time to Read 200+ Posts in Each Clearance and Guide Thread to Get the Full Picture of What's Cheap." :)

I'm not a lurker. I'm not a hoarder. I simply would like to be able to pull up this thread on my several-generations-old-non-touchscreen cell phone and see in a minute or two what has dropped, rather than spending 20 minutes dodging blue shirts while loading and reading page after page of posts to get the same info.
I put the discussion thread and trading thread links in the first post so we wouldn't have all of this clutter and end up clogging up the server with a thread filled with nothing but the same 'anything drop' or 'i got xyz and abc guides, who needs them' posts. Yet, some(not everyone) are so hardwired to just put all of the chit chat in ONE spot and it gets annoying when there IS a drop, since then you have to fish through 30-40 or more posts during that drop just to find the list of what dropped.

Yes, it MAY make it easier for the 'hoarders', but I think after a few months of trying to grab everything they can and finding out that not much will sell on Ebay soon after a drop because EVERYONE floods the market, they'll surely stop.

As for copy and pasting the two posts, the links in the first thread take a little more effort than just copy and pasting, so please don't pretend to act like you know how much effort making a new version of a thread takes unless you've done it. Thanks.

I think any posts on potential drops SHOULD be in this thread. Potential drops are different then posts like "I really wish would drop soon".

For the CAGs that actually go and check these prices in store to see whether a drop happened or not, it's important for people to know what guides have a higher likelihood of being pennied out.

The same with posts about guides people checked and came up non-pennied. These should also be here.

IMO, the discussion thread is for posts about which guides people like better over others, etc. For example, if I'm posting about whether DoubleJump guides are better than Prima.

Basically, if it has anything to do with actually acquiring guide drops (potential or otherwise) it should be here.

My $0.02

:applause: Agreed. Thread clutter is bad, but these things are a 0.01 when you find them. For the people who aren't checking guides or posting details on drops, it's not too much to do your homework. If it is, then buy it online somewhere or at some B&M.
If you don't mind, I may add this to the first post and change some of my own posts on this thread into the warning. I know it won't help all that much, but it's worth a shot.
Go for it.
That's a good idea and I am sure it is possible. Maybe not in the post form that you are thinking, but there could be another header before the posts start. It'd be great if the powers that be considered this for this thread and several others that need it as well.
That would be sweet. A sort of floating header that would appear at the top of each page of a specific thread. I'd love to see that for the GameRush/BlockBuster threads, Clearance threads, this, a few others.
People seem to be getting so anal lately on anything even in the sliver of being off topic and with the way things are going I dont think it is a bad thing for the thread to have some clutter.
I understand that, but Iam made a thread specifically for the reduced price guide related talk can go in there. Want to ask how many you have or where you do your best hunting or whatever, go to that thread.

That's a fair point, but in truth, that's not our concern. I hate to put it that way, especially as I empathise with you completely on having deals snatched by hoarders. But we're here to share the information, not encode it and make it tough to find said information.
I think any posts on potential drops SHOULD be in this thread. Potential drops are different then posts like "I really wish would drop soon".
Nothing wrong with discussing potential drops, that's been going on for a long time. "X has been on the shelves for seven months, you'd think it would drop soon." That's helpful in reminding people what may drop.

The same with posts about guides people checked and came up non-pennied. These should also be here.
That's fine, too. It's just kinda silly when we have 20 posts confirming the same drop or non-drop. And it makes the job for the wiki updaters (though the wiki is currently out of commission as I understand it... should come back at some point) and Iam to cull a list by having to tredge through numberous posts all saying seemingly the same thing.
Note to specific CAGs, Xizer and Mr Bojangles. I just cleaned out a ton of extranous posts and left a huge memo to y'all to keep the chit chat OUT of here. And within 24 hours you've each posted at least two posts which blatantly ignored: KINDLY KEEP ALL POSTS WHICH DO NOT SPECIFY NEW GUIDE DROPS IN THE
REDUCED PRICE GUIDE DISCUSSION THREAD. That was hugely obnoxious and not appreciated. I see or hear of any further posts by you guys in here which do not specify new Guide drops, and I hand out infractions.
I've scanned the first couple of posts and searched, but I'm unclear on the difference between the second post and the wiki, other than that one is listed by date, the other by store, and the wiki is clearly out of date.

If there are issues with updating the second post, can the wiki be updated?

EDIT: sorry, I wrote this post last night and just posted it this morning before seeing the above mod message, so apologies if it's OT. I'm just hoping for an unambiguous single source for drop information, unless there's a reason to have both a post in a thread *and* a wiki.
Right now, the Wiki is out of commission, so the second post will have to do for recent drops, while the Wiki will act as an archive once it comes back should someone find a REALLY old guide that they need verification as to whether or not it dropped.

EDIT: The Wiki master list drop page and current drop page work for me and bring me to the specified lists, so maybe the Wiki isn't COMPLETELY dead.

Thanks for the answer.
So if I understand correctly, we have:
A wiki "Master Drop List" that isn't updated, and isn't going to be updated.
A wiki "Recent Guide Drops" that isn't updated (most recent update 4/7/08), and isn't going to be updated.
A second post containing recent guide drops which is being updated.

May I suggest:
1. Moving any recent guide drops in the "Recent Guide Drops" wiki that are NOT in the "Master Drop List" wiki to the "Master Drop List" wiki, so the latter becomes a complete archive.
2. Eliminating the "Recent Guide Drops" wiki, including the link to it in the first post, since it isn't being updated and no longer provides the info suggested by its title.
3. Adding a large disclaimer to the top of the "Master Drop List" wiki that it is an ARCHIVE and to see the second post for recent drops, and changing the reference above the link in the first post from "Master Drop List" to "Master Drop List ARCHIVE (see 2nd post for recent drops)"

Well a huge sorry since no one posts in the discussion thread. Last post was well over a month ago. No hard feelings since I was posting in here only because that thread was dead.

Oh boo hoo! If you want $15-25 strategy guides for a fucking penny you should have to read a few extra posts to see them.

It's pretty retarded to ban speculation posts too, that's how we find out about most pennied guides these days because we have no "insiders."

The other thread is dead as shit and it's retarded to have three threads dedicated to a single topic which only receives a few posts a day. To further split those few posts out into three threads is stupid.

The other thread wouldn't be "dead" if people posted where they are supposed to.

I'm 100% with IATCG and Gwen with this one.

Iamthecheapestgamer can :booty: This thread and others are filled with a bunch of moderator ass kissers and in turn the Mods turn the cheek when they are pulling something.

Withing the last few pages iamthecheapestgamer has responded to many people bitching about this and that and yet hes adding to the clutter, one of the main things hes crying about.

If your going to step in and lay the law around here Gwen then do it across the board and I dont care if hes the thread creator I made threads and so has thousands of other people.

I'm all for this new decree, but if someone is planning on heavily enforcing nothing but new drop posts in this thread, it needs to be stickied. The frequency of guide drops would mean this thread will drop down to the depths of the forum in no time with no one posting until a new guide drop. The way it is, the thread is always on at least the third page. To be honest, I don't see what the big deal is. All other threads about deals are actively discussed and they work just fine. It seems like this is all unnecessary work, and instead of each user working a bit to ignore off topic posts and take it upon themselves to skim through a few posts for the info they want (which should be in post two anyway), a moderator is going to dish out infractions and delete numerous posts that would be accepted in various other threads.

Just doesn't make sense to me, but if it's gonig to be done, this thread should be stickied or it will be lost on a very regular basis.

WTF is going on with this thread.....hasn't it always been on thread for the discussion of drops and another thread for trading...simple as that right...i mean i sometimes get annoyed when someone posts a useless comment like, "is there gonna be a drop soon" or "did anything drop today" but hey we can all live with it as we have for years now and it's all worked out so maybe we shouldn't be changing things huh?

if you remember this topic was stickied, but people complained and removed. And I dont think it will be a problem because when there is a drop it will quickly get bump up.

My thoughts on the subject:

I understand the desire to keep the thread free of clutter. Some of the posts are just useless. However, IMO, 3 threads for one subject does seem like overkill. A trade thread is necessary, otherwise this thread would be an absolute mess. I just don't see the need, though, for a third thread strictly for discussion. I think that both drop notifications and discussion can be done in this thread. A very clear notice (like what IATCG has already done) can be put in the OP about what is and is not acceptable for the thread. Unnecessary posts can be deleted at Gwen's discretion, along with handing out infractions when applicable (i.e., repeat offenses, IMO). Hold people's posts to a set standard and they will either go along or go away.

I have spoken.;)

In a perfect world, we would have our sources(like we once had Vahn for the BB drops)to give us an advance list of what is going to drop and there would be NO NEED for the 'did anything drop' posts, since we would KNOW. BTW, what ever happened to the people who worked @ TRU and I think GS who would give us the lists of what dropped there? We definitely NEED sources, since I know many(including me) aren't willing to waste gas going out checking guides to see which ones dropped, but I know I'm thankful for those who DO check.

If we could limit the 'I got xyz and abc guides' posts to ONE per CAG, which they would edit like they do in the trading thread after each successive drop occurs, that would cut down on clutter BIG TIME. Also, if the 'anything drop' posts were all deleted without exception and people showed a bit of patience on the first Monday of the month while waiting for info on a possible drop, we would have ALOT less clutter.

As for my OWN clutter in this thread and the smarmy response from Derrick regarding it, I plan on cleaning up my OWN mess since I would be a hypocrite if I barked about people cluttering the thread and I did it myself and didn't do anything about it.
Oh boo hoo! If you want $15-25 strategy guides for a fucking penny you should have to read a few extra posts to see them.
Hate to tell you this, but when they sell for a penny, they're no longer $15-25 strategy guides. It's called the market.

But, you may have a point. If you want discounted gaming items, maybe you should drive all over BFE instead of coming to a central source of information online. Like this one.

First I would like to thank everyone here for the time spent and sharing about these guides.

Second, I am all for making seperate threads. One for deals and deal discussion and the other for trading. 3 threads would be too many to look at and this thread would be buried.

That's just my 2 cents.

i found a small cloth map of hyrule stuffed inside a gears of war guide. it fell out of the guide at check out and the clerk handed it to me haha
I can confirm that the Dark Sector guide has pennied at BB as of today.
Figures. I was staring at that thing earlier today when I found 3 copies of Nintendogs: Pups on the shelf at the one local BB. It had the greenish cover like Uncharted, which made me think it WAS a copy of the guide for Uncharted.

I did have the Sims multi pack of mini guides checked, still $24.99 though.

I'm assuming there were MORE that dropped though, since it's kind of unusual for just ONE guide to have dropped. I REALLY wish we STILL had a source like we did with Vahn for drop info.

EDIT: Second post is updated, but we need verification as to whether or not there were more guides which dropped.

Thank you for the info, it's good to have someone to verify what dropped and what didn't. Of course, I'm still kicking myself for not checking Dark Sector earlier today, since I for some reason had a gut feeling that it may have dropped for some reason.

I drove by BB today and said to myself, "Should I stop in there? Ehhhh, naahhh... I doubt anything dropped this week." Ugh. But thanks for the info!

While I don't really have a need for this guide, I want to genuinely thank you for posting this. It really makes all of our lives easier to have an "inside" person who is willing to help out and post the drops. Thanks so much!

Went to my best buy last night before closing...The 7 Dark Sector Guides were gone. My dad was on the road so he hit one and found a couple of EA hardcovers and 2 frontlines, he actually got some Metal Gear Solid 4 window/door decals for free from one of the girls that works there. He said they had posters too, but he didn't want to press his luck (no whammy).
I can confirm that the Dark Sector guide has pennied at BB as of today.
Do you mind? We're busy arguing in here.

Okay guys, I'd like to hear what everyone has to say on the matter. Especially Iam, Rocko and HeatDolphin, as they're the ones who do the wiki updates (when the wiki works, that is) and have to tredge through tons of posts to find relevent information.
And I think some of you may feel differently about the endless "found 3 of X" and "has Y dropped yet" posts if you did the update work, rather than just nagging for "is the wiki or second post updated yet???!".
One thing to bear in mind is that the trading will remain in the trading thread, any have to trade/want to trade posts in this thread will be deleted and that won't change.

But let's talk about what we want in the main reduced price game guide thread. Just talk about it in the Discussion thread.

If it's really a problem I can update the wiki. Honestly it's not a lot of work to click an "edit" button and copy and paste a new guide onto the list.

The only problem is that I don't have a wiki account.

That's not the problem Zixer...the wiki login has a error message when a said wiki editor(like myself) tries to log in. It has been that way for awhile now.

I went today, and spied a fair condition NP Battle Revolution guide, and a PC Gears of War. Obviously I saw plenty of $5 Halo guides. I didn't buy anything because I just didn't feel like such a small purchase. I shouldn't have waited this long to go...

Thanks to BB media employee and others for confirming Dark Sector. I picked up a couple copies of Dark Sector this morning.
To those in Richmond, VA:
The CTC BB still has a few Frontlines guides.

Well, my first attempt to get some gudies at Gamecrazy today, got shot down, the woman litterly just took the guide out of my hands and threw them in the bin behind the counter. I think I'll stick to GS and BB from now on.....

Ooo, that sucks. :whistle2:x ...and the woman will be wondering why no one comes in to buy anything from her anymore!
