Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Nine

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Picked Pokemon Revolution (wii) and Metro Prime 3 (wii) Guides for $0.02. Also, got FF 4 (DS) $19.XX after price match with Nebraska Furniture Mart ad :)

If we could compile a list of what specifically rings up as:

* 1-cent
* Bundle required
* Not in system

For Circuit City, this would probably be easier. Here's a strategy I'm thinking of. Buying all the guides that actually ring up for a penny, and then coming back a different time to attempt the "trouble guides"

Here is my Circuit City list, compiled from all of the posts in recent days.

Army of Two (Prima)
Godfather (Prima)
Guild Wars Factions
Halo 3 (The Official Guide)
Lego Star Wars: The COMPLETE Saga (Prima)
Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar (Prima)
Madden NFL 08
Mario Party 8 (Prima)
MechAssault
Metroid Prime 3 Corruption (Premiere Edition Prima)
New Super Mario Bros (Nintendo)
Pokemon Battle Revolution (Nintendo Power)
Pokemon Diamond & Pearl (Nintendo Power)
Pokemon Diamond & Pearl Pokedex (Nintendo Power)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorer's Guide (Pre-order bonus)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness
Pokemon Ranger (Nintendo)
Rainbow Six: Vegas (Prima)
Rogue Galaxy (DoubleJump)
Rise of Nations: Rise of Nations (Prima)
Sims 2 Open For Business
Splinter Cell: Double Agent (Prima)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (Prima)
Super Paper Mario (Prima)
Super Paper Mario (Nintendo)
Tomb Raider: Anniversary (The one with the poster)
Viva Pinata (Prima)
Yoshi's Island DS (Nintendo)
You and Wii
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Softcover Premiere Edition Prima)

I have not compiled their ring-up status, though.

Rogue galaxy rang up 20 bucks for me and I got two of the other lego star wars game for a penny a few days ago. I posted it earlier in the thread.

Got shot down at CC on Metroid Prime Corruption. Guy didn't seem to care about selling it for .01, but said he needed to check with his manager so he wouldn't get in trouble. Came back and said I had to get the game with it to get it for .01. Went to BB from there and got the Nintendogs guide, and Pokemon Battle Revolution and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue and Red. My daughter was stoked about the Nintendogs guide.
I understand your frustration, but please understand that these stores are technically supposed to throw the guides away. Any guide you actually do buy for a penny is a gift. Making a scene and/or calling corporate complaint depts will only result in the stores easing the hammer down on penny guides. It won't help. Just adopt the attitude of appreciation when you get some, and accept the denials with as much grace as possible. We all stand a better chance at getting some in the futureif things stay as cool and quiet as possible. :)

And thanks for the Orange Box for $5 @ BB tip. That's the golden price for me. Better to get some at $5 than to miss it all for a penny, I say.
Okay guys, I just checked back on this and I have to tell you that this woman was rude, officious, and extremely annoying in front of 3 sales people I am familiar with due to me spending large amounts of my money in the store.

If she had have been polite and nice or even just calm about it I would not have asked for the number. It had nothing to do with the purchase and everything to do with not being treated like sh#t. I don't really need any preaching from you guys on this - I am the politest and most civil person you could wish to meet and have many friends at GS, BBV, Target and BB as well as CS. Again - penny guide or not - I will not stand for that kind of behavior. From anyone - especially someone in a service industry. It was funny until I felt insulted.

Thanks for the concern though - I will take your life lesson under advisement:roll:
Refresh my memory, neocisco. What's CC's official policy on any items that ring up $0.01? Same as everyone else, don't sell it unless they're not paying attention or they're clueless?
That's pretty much it. Just like BB, the .01 price is an indicator that the guide is supposed to be pulled. Most CC's are so shortstaffed though that pulling guides is probably very low on the priority list, assuming they even know about it to begin with.

Save the righteous indignation for something that matters, griper. No one was "preaching" at you, just giving some advice informed by personal experience on the best way to obtain .01 guides and how to deal with being denied. Nothing will happen by you calling about it (again, personal experience) and it will make it more difficult for you the next time there is a drop. There is a difference between constructive criticism and and an insult. It will do you well to know that.

Oh for goodness sake,

This is the last time I am going to say anything about this - and please, there is no need for a reply from the high and mighty.

If you read what I originally said - I had no intention of calling corporate nor would I bother over something so trivial - I am aware of what a waste of time it would be. The woman took a dump on me for trying to buy something which was on the floor and in their system.

It did stop her in her tracks - and I hope it makes her think twice about bullying another customer or sales person.

Can we stop now - I gave you the edited highlights of an anecdotal story which I thought was funny. I wanted to share that story - seems like others have had similar experiences running through the thread. Participation - that is how this thing works right.

I will just keep my thoughts to myself from now on - and again, that does not require a response - from anyone.

Now, my friend who manages my GS gave me TMNT and Onemuisha 3 today for the PC for free as well as a Hardcover Mario Galaxy and a Condemened 2 which she had been holding for me. Not once did anyone treat anyone badly - or would anyone like to jump one for this one too??

That was rhetorical.

Oh, and I do appreciate the tips and advice in this thread. I have done well by it and I am grateful to everyone who shares.

Thanks

Zelda Twilight Princess (Nintendo)
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (Prima) (Black cover)
Lego Star Wars II (Prima)
SSX3 (Prima)
Driv3r 3 (Prima)

I know a couple are ancient drops now but just wanted to be complete with what has been found recently. These came up as bundle required for me:
Rogue Galaxy
Army Of Two
Guild Wars Factions
Sims Open For Business

I got lucky today at 1 store though because the guy just added them into the system & I got RG!:bouncy:

On a side note, I stopped by a Gamecrazy today to see if there were any guides & got lucky again. Now this was a sweet score!
Tales Of The Abyss
Harvest Moon Magical Melody
Valkyrie Profile Lenneth
Bulletwitch
Heroes Of Mana (finally nabbed one)
Dragonquest Heroes Rocket Slime
Megaman ZX
Suikoden V

Now I have to say that I know the store manager & she told me that they have to send the guides back to corporate now instead of destroying them at store level. She only gave me these guides because they were not showing in her inventory. It looks like penny guides at Gamecrazy are going to be real tough from now on.

I forgot to mention that while I was looking at the guides she brought out 5 more guides that someone had wanted to trade in but they don't take them so she just gave them to me:
Final Fantasy III
New Super Mario Bros.
Metroid Prime 3 Corruption
Dark Messiah...
God Of War Chains Of Olympus!!

Just wondering, for Mystery Dungeon, its Explores of Time and not Red Rescue Team? I skipped it last time since I thought it was for the older game, but if it is for the newer one, I'll have to return back again to pick it up.

Last time I got shot down because the guide wasnt in their system, and it was taken away from me :( That was my first, and probably last encounter with that GC. The thing is, they have a huge collection of guides that never sell, it takes up 3 shelves behind the counter O.O

Actually, he did say Best Buy:
[...] Went to BB from there and got the Nintendogs guide, and Pokemon Diamond and Pearl and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. [...]
I don't remember hearing that the Diamond and Pearl guide was a penny before. Was there a new drop or did I miss an old one? Couldn't find it in the second post or wiki.

It is no wonder that Circuit City lost $12 billion in revenue lately. When a company treats its customers like that, what do they expect?

Best Buy's right next door and they treat me much better. Circuit City's managers should take a stroll over to their neighbors for a lesson on how to treat customers.
I went to a different CC today and Halo 3 rang up as $19.99. 0_o

Oh, and IATCG, you can also add Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Premium Edition (P) and Pokemon Ranger (NP) to the list. :D
I'm assuming you mean the CC list? Only current guides(none for games which haven't come out in the past YEAR) are going on the CC list. Otherwise, if someone wants to make a collected list of which ones specifically ring up AS .01 AND maintain it someplace within the thread, you're welcome to list as many guides as you want.

I haven't used IATCG's lists for the longest time, quite frankly. It's not updated whenever a new drop occurs, sometimes it misses guides, etc.

The best strategy is to just read every new post in the thread and compile your own list.

Well.....excuuuuuuuuuusssseeee me. Sorry that I can't update the list(s) as SOON as people mention what dropped and that we sometimes MISS guides, but with all of the 'score' posts and other superfluous posts clogging things up it takes a while to get to the informative ones. Of course, I'm also NOT on here 24/7, so blame me having to sleep sometime for the lack of expeditious updating as well.

This thread, like every other one on here, relies HEAVILY on people letting us know what dropped and at what store(s). However, I STILL say we could do without all of the random chit chat(which I AM guilty of myself but would restrain myself from doing if THIS thread were unclogged for good), but I digress. :whistle2:#

Their total revenue for a year is about $12 billion.

Misspoke about my Pokemon guide find. It was Battle Revolution rather than Diamond & Pearl. Mystery Dungeon was the Blue and Red version. I was falling asleep as I was posting and screwed up. I will correct. Hopefully no one took my word as gospel and went out looking. Sorry again.

But... Halo 3 is not coming up $.01 for many. It is coming up $15-$20 &/or you have to buy the game.

Ah, I see. That's ok, I didn't go hunting for it. Thanks for clearing that up.
we are talking about CC, not BB
And its only the NP guide.

I'm back from vacation in Peoria. (Phoenix suburb.)
Went to a BB across the street from our hotel and picked up 4 dark sectors and a pokemon mystery dungeon. That's all that they had.

Then I went to a PnT right by it, traded in the guides, and got a copy of TWEWY for $10 extra. This place was insane on retro games prices though. A fucking model 2 genesis that had a giant crack in the top for $49.99? WTF?
I understand your frustration, but please understand that these stores are technically supposed to throw the guides away.
Change "technically" to "legally" and then we're 100% accurate.
This line of conversation needs to end, or move to the discussion thread.
Absolutely, I just wanted to remind folks if they weren't aware, that by legal agreement with publishers, penny guides/books are NOT to be sold. Some of you are new and some just never read this before (from the OP of Reduced Price Game Guide: Thread Seven).
This is all very interesting, but what is a Penny Guide?
To answer this question fully, one first has to understand the longstanding legal agreement which [book] publishers have with book sellers such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and other chain and Mom & Pop shops, as well as other retailers who similarly sell their books.

For several decades, publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Random House, et cetera will send out X-number of a title to stores to be sold. After a time, when it is decided that those older titles have little chance of selling and the store shelf real-estate would be better used for newer publications, they issue a recall to the vendors to field destroy all remaining copies of titles A, B & C.

The stores then will pull those titles from their inventory to be field-destroyed, and in their systems mark the publications as 1¢. The 1¢ price is to indicate to the publisher that they are no-longer selling the pulled title, and it is also to serve as a Red Flag to any cashier who might ring up a title (on the chance that the titles were not pulled as legally they were required).

When the pull lists are sent out by the publishers, and the stores adjust the price in their inventory (and pull and field-destroy the books), the stores also are to report to the publisher the number of the books they pulled. (This is generally done at a corporate level.) The publisher then credits the stores full cost of the books.

So lets say, MegaChain orders 8000 copies of the Bread Baker strategy guide for their stores in North America for say, $4 a piece. They owe $32,000 to Publisher X. Bread Baker being a big seller and a hard game, then sells 6000 of those 8000 guides, leaving around 2000 guides on the shelves when Publisher X issues the pull demand. Publisher X then issues MegaChain an $8000 credit for the 2000 unsold copies of the guide.

According to IAmTheCheapestGamer, some retailers also have deals where each copy of pulled titles sent to their recognized Recycling Centers are additionally issued further credit for being environmentally responsible in the manner in which they field destroy each book.
Okay, now this discussion can end or continue in the Discussion Thread.

But for the fact that they had a corporate crackdown on their penny drops, we've had no real CC guide drops for a long while.

I'm gonna go look through the past couple pages in case I missed anything, but my store couldn't get Phantom Hourglass (prima premier) to ring up yesterday. They tried by entering the number by hand, by looking it up, it wasn't in the system that they could find. But I did manage to grab Metriod Prime 3, the Pokemon Diamond/Pearl Pokedex and Yoshi's Island. Only reason I mention those is because they were able to scan SOME of the guides, it was just the Zelda one that was problematic.
Thank you for consolidating but i have a couple more;)

Nice find on all of those, but especially Heroes of Mana... I have yet to even see that guide in a store.

Zelda: Phantom Hourglass has to be put in manually. Here is the code since I happen to have a guide nearby. PRI9780761556473

This is the second time I've posted this info but let me break it down again. The PRI is for Prima and the numbers are the 13 digits under the ISBN bar code, not the UPC bar code. It's just the 13 digits, don't include the extra 5 under the other bar code.
Twilight Princess.. is that the white softcover? C&C I gotta go back to look for.

No, that is the Prima guide. The Zelda that they are referring to is the Nintendo Power guide that has the game artwork on the cover.

What the heck ever happened to her(669), Gwen? I ask because I know she was always active in the CAG community and then all of a sudden the one day she just up and disappeared or whatever.

As for the list, if you don't mind seeing if you can locate it, then I'll be glad to add that list as well as the more current ones that have dropped to the second post.

For the record though Gwen, we still have access to the Wiki, but I don't believe it's able to be updated at this point. It's located HERE: http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com .

Oh and another thing, though I know we have many who have tons of stuff price checked as it is and I do thank them for it, but FYE also pennies out guides. I know this firsthand because I found a copy of the guide for Psi-Ops about 2 years ago at an FYE. They WILL ring up as .01, but like CC and anywhere really, they are hugely YMMV as to whether or not they'll sell them to you. So, the next time you see some 3-4 year old guide sitting in FYE, take it up to the register and see if it comes up .01.

The one FYE up in NY state actually had a GTA Vice City guide sitting on their shelves as recently as early 2007, so that just goes to show you how long they hold onto stuff.

FYE is impeccably difficult to get guides from. I've gotton a total of one since I started checking them - because on emloyee was dumb enough to put it in the front with a 1 cent price tag on it. And they still didn't want to sell it to me at first. Luckily, being polite in the whole situation worked out in the long run, because I walked out with a GRAW guide.
You're quite welcome. I just ask that whenever we get new drop info, that people mention what store and when they might've dropped.
How about when someone posts what he believes to be a new price drop, that the entire post be in red (like this)? That way you can skim all the questions, confirmations, discussions, etc.

Stopped by GameCrazy today, and the guy was nice enough to price check a few guides that aren't on the list yet. No Final Fantasy guide was pennied out, even the GBA ones.
However, I did get a couple not on the list:
Legend of Zelda: Windwaker (NP) $4.00
X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse (Brady) $0.01

Well, if you want to do a 'spoiler', which makes the text come up in red, you do it like this(minus the quote marks in between the brackets):

[spoiler'] then type in here [/spoiler']

I went to Best buy today and found some previously confirmed penny guides:
tabula rasa, turok, dark sector, FF XII revenant wings, EA hardcover book

However, I tried to get the Oblivion one that says "game of the year edition," goes through shivering isles, and has a brown cover but it was still $24.99. I don't think description of that guide on here is clear on which version is pennied since the one i grabbed matches that description and also had a sticker over the UPC. Anybody know which one it is?

^^^^ That Best Buy is going to be your friend in the next coming months. If they still had FFXII:RW, then keep checking there first when there's new drops posted.
How about when someone posts what he believes to be a new price drop, that the entire post be in red (like this)? That way you can skim all the questions, confirmations, discussions, etc.
Good idea. I'll be doing mine in yellow, though, since red is hard on the eyes.

This is red text
This is spoiler text, which is also red, but behind a spoiler button.

To do red text, just type:
Your text goes here[/color$]

But without the $ inside the brackets.

I went to Circuit City and grabbed 2 Phantom Hourglass guides.
They didn't even ring up - the cashier asked his manager to put them back into the system so I could buy them. I was surprised when they still came up a penny.

Let me thank whoever first tried for some guides @ Circuit City for .01 recently. I grabbed(for free nonetheless):

1x Army Of Two
1x Rogue Galaxy

I'm keeping both as of now, but for anyone who wants to try for them, there's THREE more AOT guides in the Wilkes-Barre(PA) store. But, be warned that the guide doesn't come up in the system with the UPC(s) on the back when scanned, so they'll have to find the SKU # for it and bring it up that way. I had the same happen with RG, though when they tried to total the guides to charge me the .02, it wouldn't let them because of the 'package' warning that came up with RG's guide.

I also grabbed 2 copies of the Pokemon Battle Revolution(for Wii, Nintendo Power version)guide from a nearby Best Buy for .02.

Thanks for the idea on color coding new drop info, Richard and Neo. I'll be keeping an eye out for the info from this point on.
So it is the Blue/Red then? The stack of Time/Darkness looked too new to me
