Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Nine

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

I haven't tried the CC near me yet, but I'm positive that they're either gone or the manager won't let me have. Unless I go the first day something is reported on here, it's gone. It doesn't even take that long really most of the time, with the guides sometimes being gone in just hours. >_

Blue/Red it is. I'm an idiot, and a newbie at getting guides. I just got too excited at finding something and did not verify. Will not happen again, promise. Probably will though.

Ran into the same thing with AoT this evening. None of the UPCs work so I couldnt buy them. ; ; Lame. Any other of these drops now having this issue of no longer being in their system?

In my experience, if it's not in the system one CC just gives it to me. The other CC in my area rings it up as a $0.01 misc service/part.

so sad, zelda PH out of system so they tried to sell it to me for retail...picked up metroid prime 3, 3 super paper marios (for friends), a yoshi's island ds, a pokemon ranger, and 2 pokemon diamond and pearls.
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass has to be put in manually. Here is the code since I happen to have a guide nearby. PRI9780761556473

This is the second time I've posted this info but let me break it down again. The PRI is for Prima and the numbers are the 13 digits under the ISBN bar code, not the UPC bar code. It's just the 13 digits, don't include the extra 5 under the other bar code.
Ok, this is the 3rd time I've posted this now. Maybe we can get something on the front page about it?

Zelda rung up fine at three stores I went to today.

Figured I'd share a nice encounter in a Northeast Ohio CC.

Alright, so the first stop of the day is CC. I was kinda surprised they had the selection that they did (they had much more on the list that I just found out, I didnt have a list with me), so I bring up the stack to customer service. It's useful to know that just yesterday, I picked up a Phantom Hourglass and it was not in the system and had to be manually adjusted.

There is a teen girl ringing me up, with a slightly older female manager also behind the counter. Its a register where I can't see the screen. The first guide rung up is Phantom Hourglass, and the girl gets a confused look and points to the screen. The manager comes over and gives her directions, then tells me "Don't worry, we are gonna fix this for you" and goes to help another customer. I figure to myself "I guess they are manually putting them in".

Unfortunately, the cashier gets to the Super Paper Mario guides, and starts doing the same thing. I casually say, "Oh, those are giving you problems now too? They weren't yesterday." The managers response?

"Yeah, there is some glitch in the system. For some reason, these are ringing up at the CANADIAN PRICE which is higher than it should be, so we are DOING YOU A FAVOR BY MARKING THEM DOWN TO THE NORMAL PRICE"

My response?

"You are a fuckING LIAR"

I now have the attention of both workers, as well as the other customer, who is doing a commendable job of holding in his laughter.

Her: "Excuse me?"
Me: "We both know that these things are ringing up .01, so what would possibly make you lie to me when you are marking them up?"
Her: "Hold on while I take care of this other customer"
Me: *waits*
Her: "How do you know what these are ringing up as?"
Me: "Not that its any of your business, but I've already purchased some at a different store. But that doesn't answer my question."
Her: "Even though I'm not supposed to, we will let you have these at a penny"
Me: "You still haven't explained why you just lied to me"
Her: "I'm taking care of the situation"
Me: "You still aren't explaining why you just made up some bullshit story. Do you think I'm stupid? Do you think it's just a coincidence that all of these guides are ringing up this way? That I didn't know how much they were and I really wanted to spend $200 on 10 video game books?"
Her: "The situation is getting taken care of"
Me: "Do you realize you just risked your job pulling this shit? What is the store number?"
Her: *Voice cracks, urine on stand-by* "Store XXXX. We got a memo the other day to not sell these guides as a penny"
Me: "Then they shouldn't still be out there. Can i see this memo?"
Her: "You can't read internal store emails"
Me: "Don't worry, I got a good idea what it says"
Her: "Then you know we aren't supposed to sell these for a penny"
Me: "I know it probably says to pull them, but if you were really that concerned then they wouldnt be out on the floor still. Did the memo say to lie to your customers then deceptively mark them back up to full price, or did you ad-lib that one yourself?"
Her: *eyes water* "I took care of the problem, you will be getting your items".

Stubborn bitch never once admitted or explained the lie, or apologized. Not going to get in her in trouble though, as I had a grin on my face all day.

I ran into some problem at CC, but i just told the manager that best buy is also selling penny guide and he gave them to me.

dude you are a hero...i've been lied to on so many occasions when getting penny guides and most of the time i've said that i'll let karma come back around to them and took my business to a different store chain and i'm not talking about penny guides....if it's on the shelf and rings up at a penny then they sure as heck should be honest and sell to you instead of marking them up or not selling them to you. If you live in my city i'd be buying you a beer!!!!
Let me thank whoever first tried for some guides @ Circuit City for .01 recently.
You're welcome.

Is there any way someone could send me a Rogue Galaxy for free? Please...

I would like to think I contributed a little bit to the Circuit City Penny guide boom. :p

Thank goodness I got a hookup at Gamecrazy about guides. I'll keep us all posted. In the meanwhile, don't forget about Best Buy. I'm hoping they drop a few in the next couple of weeks or so.

--Michael
All of the guides to the good games at BB are cleaned out now. Even the full priced ones. >_

well they're getting better at this actually gamecrazy stores are now told never to sell guides at a penny. they now overide them and sell it for full price!!!!

I tried at CC and got nothing. All the guides at mine scanned at full price so not sure why. So if anyone got any send some my way :)

This is my first time even attempting to find penny guides or posting in this thread but I was wondering if anybody had a list of recent CC drops? I checked the recent drops Wiki but that has nothing listed for CC for nearly 2 years.

From the past few pages I'm only gathering Zelda PH (regular edition, I'm guessing) and Prime 3. My CC had a bunch of guides (saw like a billion Prime 3 guides) so I figured, I might give this a try.

So you cussed out an employee and almost made her cry over strategy guides. You, sir, are a dick.

I'm sure we can all expect a massive hammer coming down on Circuit City penny guides in the future, thanks to assholes like you.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. The employee should have just said "I'm sorry, we are not allowed to sell these" instead of lying, but it wasn't worthy of the wrath that she faced. I mean, that is one of the worst ways I've heard a customer treating an employee. If he was upset about being lied to, then he should ask for a manager or store manager, etc. But that is horrible. I could not imagine having to deal with a person with such an obvious anger problem as him.

He made the poor lady cry. It just shocks me over how mean people can be. There is no excuse for that behavior, regardless if she wasn't straight forward with him. Ridiculous.

I've gotta check up on her. Last I heard, I think she was getting married to her boyfriend, though I could be confusing my facts.

edit: but at the moment, I like the suggestion.

It's not ridiculous at all, and there's a perfectly valid excuse. This person knowingly broke the law by lying in order to deceive me into paying quite a bit more money than I should have. I don't know what you call it, but I call that an attempt to steal my money. Her gender and/or uniform doesn't change that fact.

And that WAS the store manager. If I had complained to someone else, the obvious step-up is corporate, and I can almost guarantee that she would be fired/severely reprimanded, which i did not do.

And if this is one of the worst stories you've heard, you don't go out much. I've heard a woman call a CSR a "dumb fucking whore" because she didn't know the exact directions for submitting a rebate form. I cant even count how many times Ive heard employees get insulted because a sale was over or something wasn't in stock, things they have no control over. My situation is 100% different.

The employee is 100% in the wrong here for making up such an outlandish story. At best, it would put her job in jeopardy at juts about any retail location I know, and at worst its against the law according to a variety of consumer acts. At any time if she would have said "I shouldn't have done that" or "Im sorry for making up a story" it would have been fine. I don't know if she avoided responsibility because she feared getting in more trouble, or to save face in front of the other customer, but that certainly doesn't justify avoiding the situation.

And I'm not sure who you are and why you'd jump to such an erroneous conclusion about my personality. I have no anger issues whatsoever, especially when it comes to something like this. I think I've gotten 1 pennied guide from gamestop in the past 2 years (a stray Castlevania DoS). I've been shot down probably about 100 times. It goes something like this:

Me: Found a couple guides.
Them: Sorry bud, can't sell them. I'd get in trouble.
Me: No worries, just thought I'd give it a shot.

See the difference in that story?

Huh? This is the first time in YEARS CC has pennied out anything on this kind of level - guides used to drop down to 1.98-4.98.

The hammer would have been more likely to come down had the employee actually succeeded in screwing me. When stores sell pennied guides, its virtually impossible to prove that they werent field destroyed. In this case, if she marked them up, CC would have sold guides for FULL PRICE that they claimed as unsold to a publisher and gotten full credit for. That's a much bigger load of shit to deal with.

I figured you'd defend your actions. It's unbeliveable that you think that calling her a "******* liar" is better than calling her a "dumb, ******* whore". What a rationalization. My point is that your punishment didn't fit the crime. She should just have said she couldn't sell them to you, but she made up a different reason. Oh well. That's not the worst thing in the world. I don't even want to see how you react when somebody actually does something legitimately wrong to you. I'm shocked that they didn't kick you out of the store, at the very least. I sure would have.

She had been nominated (either for her free magazine listings or the penny guide wiki she essentially single-handedly created... do you have any idea how much work it was to go through all the old Penny Guide threads and create one organized wiki?!?!) and seconded a number of times, but wasn't included in the final voting. I believe it was an oversight or just carelessness. That, included with some other crap she wasn't terribly fond of, and she moved along. I respect her decision, but I do miss her. She was a great help around here in a variety of areas, a sweet girl who knew her games and was just fun to have around.

I've gotta check up on her. Last I heard, I think she was getting married to her boyfriend, though I could be confusing my facts.
I know how much of a pain in the ass it is to try and just find drop info amongst all the of chit chat in the thread, so I could only imagine how difficult it was to sift through all of those older threads to make that list up. That's why I suggested that those with drop info color code their info something that'll stick out from the rest of the posts.

If you do get in touch with her Gwen, tell her she is missed here and thanks for the work she put in on the Wiki. :)

Oh and I concur with everyone else that there was NO reason for what Mighty Slacker pulled. I mean I've raised my voice a little bit before, but aside from BB, GS and TRU I've never really tried for guides anyplace else usually. But if they wouldn't give them to me and were at least decent enough to say they would get in trouble for selling them, then I just walked out with NO problems whatsoever. It's not worth making a scene over something that you know going in that they're not really supposed to sell in the first place.

As for the CC list(which someone asked about), I will compile the list and I should be adding it to the second post soon. But, as I cross check with the master drop wiki, I may be removing some if they're SUPER OLD.

Best thing I could say for those looking for guides from CC, is that if the guide has a copyright which is older than 2006, it's probably been pennied or is out of the system. The copyright date is usually on the back cover of the guides or within the first 2-5 pages in the front of the guide. That's how I was finding pennied guides for a while, before I ever started coming to CAG.

Thanks darkslime, I'll keep that in mind.

Second post is updated with the list from Xizer's post, as well as the ones that shiningslade added to it.

I think it's safe to say, as I said above, that any guides that're older than ONE year old SHOULD come up as .01(or out of system) since most retailers don't keep stuff like guides longer than a year in most cases. So, by that logic, even the God Of War II guide may be pennied @ CC. In other words, check the copyright date on the back cover of the guide(s) and if they're older than a year, give it a shot.

I had one price checked the time before this most recent time I went there(at one of those kiosks in the game section) and it(along with Rogue Galaxy AND Army Of Two) came up NORMAL price.

It was only after going to the NORMAL register or the service desk this time that those(RG + AOT) came up as .01.

Take that for what you will, but how does ONE week change the price in the system from what the guides came up as at the kiosk to what they came up as at the register?

IATCG, Regarding the list, it should be Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue team and not the Explores of Time, there was confusion earlier since it wasnt specified which one. And regarding Halo 3, it was only found at one store and still rings up at full for many others I believe. I believe Zelda: TP also rings up full. Correct me if Im wrong here.
Pretty silly post. There's a gigantic difference. I didn't use a degrading ad hom attack, I called her a liar, when in fact she was busted lying. Adding a fucking to the beginning just emphasizes the liar part, it doesn't make it a whole new insult, and its still a 100% true statement. I'm not sure what you mean by punishment - she tried to screw me over, i called her out on it - how is adding a naughty word making it punishment?

She just didn't make up a different reason, she tried to screw me out of a boatload of money. Marking up items illegally is one thing, but then tack on lying and saying that she was actually LOWERING the prices for me. Okay, there's worse things in the world, but there's also worse things in the world than being called a fucking liar when you've just been caught being a fucking liar.

And psssst..... the reason I wasn't kicked out of the store is because they were in the wrong and they knew it, and I wasn't.

BTW, Rogue Galaxy and Sims Open for Business are still ringing up as check for package. However, there are SKUs for old GamerZone coupons that will make that go away. I'm not sure how they go about finding those though.

Verification on TP ringing up full from a second person?

Changed Explorers Of Time(pokemon) to Red Rescue Team and added a HIGHLY YMMV notation to both Halo 3 and Twilight Princess guides on the CC list. Of course, the whole thing about getting guides for .01 is YMMV, but we won't get into that now. :whistle2:#

EDIT: I'll remove TP from the list then. Also removed Halo 3. Will re-add one or both once more people are able to get them with little to no problems.

Oh, just remembered, not sure if I reported it or not. I went to border's a couple weeks ago and they had guides as old as kingdom hearts and KOTOR, which rang up full price, so border's never pennies guides.

What other stores do you think we should try for penny guides? Maybe someone else'll find another jackpot like CC...

I'm not sure where you are in AZ, but there are Half-Price Books stores in Phoenix and Mesa. They normally don't get to a penny, but most are $5 and cheaper - maybe a good way to find older guides. The stores here in NE Ohio usually have good stuff.

Kmart has on occasion had a few guides in stock, though the closest ones to me never had any that I've seen. From what I remember, a few people DID get a guide or two there.

You could also try WalMart, but I believe their policy is exactly like the one for Blockbuster where they pull the guides FIRST, then mark them as .01 in the system. So, unless you work at either place, it's probably nearly impossible to get some from there.
What is the html code for red text?
You can also click the text color icon when posting and chose a variety of colors if you so wish.

Dave
I'm in Tucson, so none of those. The best place I have found to get cheap guides and sell penny guides to is bookman's, but usually they're used so the posters are pulled out and stuff.

Hey, I'm heading to Tucson in a few days and was considering bringing some extra guides (old ones no one here wants) to trade in to Bookman's. They still take them then? The last time I tried about 2 years ago they said they couldn't take any more.

Well, I tried the CC thing tonight and for the first time ever got a penny guide there (Viva Pinata). But it was a bust on Twilight Princess (NP - white cover), Super Paper Mario (NP), and Pokemon Pokedex Diamond and Pearl (NP) which others have listed as being pennied - all the others rang up full price. And I don't think the guy was BSing me as he did let me get the VP guide for a penny (though he did call it a "glitch").

ps - Gwen, I had no idea that interface dealie existed . Oh well, I'm kind of old-school anyway so I don't mind coding the tags for text formatting...

New guides to add to the list at CC: CRYSIS & Age Of Empires III The War Chiefs
How's that? lol
AOE3 War Chiefs came up must sell as max pack or something, so YMMV on that one but Crysis sanned at .01

I also had Devil May Cry 4, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, Zelda TP (White Cover) all price checked & they are all still full price. The Zelda TP guide that is .01 is the Nintendo version with black spine & the game's cover art on the cover just to clarify.;)
Hang on, I had that ages ago. Lemme check your settings and i'll be right back.

Okay, I just checked your settings. You have the Editor Interface turned off. Go into your User CP, and click Edit Options on the left. Scroll down to almost the bottom of the screen. You'll see something like this

You want to chose what I have there, Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG editing. Click save changes at the very bottom of the screen. You should then have several new easy options to tinker with when you post.
*Bow*
Merci Beaucoup Gwen :bouncy: No more need to memorize Bulletin board code *smacks head* I wonder if I disabled it when I first signed up, havent touched my options in ages. Anyhoo, to quote: Easy and polite. Gwen is the best =) ;D
