First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Yeah, I'm 99.9% sure everyone is talking about Best Buy. In any case, since IATCG isn't on, I edited the second post to say Best Buy for today's drop. Now I need to see if I can sneak out on the family and head up to a BB or two ;).
 
Wow, I can happily say that I managed to get at least one of everything this time around. And Chronis, if you're reading this, off the top of my head - I didn't touch Riverhead (that's your territory ;) ), Holbrook has Phantom Hourglasses, and Stony Brook has at least one Orange Box and a few God of Wars and Army of Twos.

I may be able to help you, but won't know until tomorrow. At the very worst, I can send you the one I bought from BB when it was discounted a while back(opened, but mint).

I missed the drop (until about 45 minutes ago) because my internet went out in the afternoon. Just got back from BB. All of the hardcovers were gone, but I did manage to get most of the other guides. I was going to provide a scanned list, but shiningslade beat me to it! I also scanned both SoulCalibur guides, both metal gear guides, WOW atlas and none of them dropped.
I am dropping off my roommate at the airport tomorrow and I plan to blaze through all of the best buys on the way home for some Hardcovers!

Man I would love for Crisis Core, FFIV, Crystal Chronicles, and Radiant Dawn to drop. Plenty of Crystal Chronicles at the store, but only a few of the rest. I'll have to make note of those for the future. Plus, I have 3 stores in my area (with 2 on the way home from work and 1 near my house)! Only stopped by one store today.

It's two books sealed together. One is an art book and one is the guide.
 
Thanks for the SKUs shiningslade I was able to find 9 google cashed links still up out of the list of 18 guides you listed (with SKUs) as of 10 PM EST to help with checking stock.

When trying to use the store locator you will get a page titled "Session Expired" click back on your browser and try again and it will work!

Please note that if your store has 1-3 copies left of something that it may be grayed (sp?) out with the store locator as if your store doesn't have it in stock. With this being said this may not be perfect but should hopefully give you an idea of if your store is behind on pulling the guides

It's the guide packaged together with the art book. It should be sealed, and will probably have a $34.99 price sticker on it (if it has a sticker, that is).
 
I found one of just about every guide from today's drop, with the exclusion of the TP hardcover(though I already had this one from GS). Thanks a lot everyone who reported.

Thanks for the info, it's definitely useful. I'd like to point out though that the in store availability wasn't completely accurate for the two stores I hit up today. I didn't take the last copy of any guide, yet most of them showed up as being unavailable. I don't want to wrongly get anyone's hopes up, but there might be a chance of finding some guides even if they don't show up on the store locator.

Yeah, I found that odd as well. Unless, I've got a new hoarder in the area, the locator is a bit off.
 
I also want to add that my store had an Assassins Creed Art Book by itself. I had them scan it & both barcodes were not on file so if you come across an Artbook without the guide, good luck trying to get it.
I happened to get lucky & poked around in the rack behind other guides & found the insert that went with it. I then found an Assassins Creed guide put it with the artbook & slipped the cover over them. Cashier scanned the insert with no questions asked. This BB shrinkwraps their guides so the other AC guide I found was not shrinked so I figured it went with the artbook.
 
Sorry about the brainfart earlier tonight with me listing CC and not BB, but I'm running on fumes tonight as it is(insomnia from Sunday into Monday).....so please bear with me.

Second post RE-updated.....oh and shiningslade....if I ever asked ANY BB employees to scan every damn guide, I'm sure I'd get quickly booted from the store....

Thanks for the info though.....even though my stores are like the fuckin' Sahara anymore.
 
Man what a day today! I haven't been to my BB is quite a while (why would I when there are no drops for so long :D) and apparently about a month ago they reformatted the WHOLE store. The guides, which used to flow from the racks and always had plenty of extras, are now on a tiny little rack, neatly arranged. I don't think I'll get very lucky from here on out.
There was a cart near the entrance to the stock room (and guides) with all kinds of stuff on it, much of which was guides. There was an easy SMG HC on top, and a harder to get at Twilight Princess HC underneath. Someone had mentioned that it MAY have dropped, and since it was on the cart, I figured I'd give it a shot. I noticed some WoW books too, I think, but was fairly certain they weren't pennied and didn't want to make this any harder than it was.
Took the guides to the front; neither had SKU's, but SMG had a post-it note with the SKU on it. Then, 10 minutes of employees trying to figure out how to ring up Zelda TP HC. They finally figured it out... and it's $10. I said I'd have to pass (felt really bad for making them do all that leg work), and they dude said something to the effect of, "Well, we gotta get rid of it anyway, so what do you want it for?" I said, "Well, I came here basically just hoping some guides would be as cheap as SMG (which rang a penny fine)... I don't have much more". Guy stood there for a second and then said, "How about $4?" I bit, even though I already have the guide, actually, from when it was $10; but the people there were soo nice and helpful, and heck, $4 for a HC guide is still pretty damn good. For them not batting an eye on the SMG, I look at it like $2 a HC guide.

CC rearranged guides as well, but I still walked out with 2 SMG SC (left one there even) and ANOTHER Viva Pinata.

Dammit - first you start clearing out my local Target before I can get to it and now your all over my closest Best Buy! :lol:. I went there this evening and I was convinced they had done a pretty thorough pull because all I could find was a single beat up copy of FF Tactics, an old Bioshock (mixed in with the revised version), and some of the cheat code books in a completely different aisle. That store was great for the last set of drops but was pretty useless this time. I'm pretty sure the Iron Man and RSV2 were gone as well so someone else must be scoping them out too. They also had a ton of Rock Band and Orange Box last time I was there so someone also probably got there before you. That is such a low-traffic store and the drops from last time sat around for so long (especially Bioshock) that I am still somewhat surprised. Anyway, any Portland metro people don't bother with that one now - it is wiped out. As is the Beaverton store. All I could find there was another, even more beat up, copy of FF Tactics and a 39 cent Burnout Paradise (they do have a few more of those, actually - though it feels overpriced ;)). On the plus side, they have one of the new Best Buy music stores which is pretty cool - lots of real guitars and stuff. I didn't even know such a thing existed.

Where in the Metro area do you live? I live off 26 and Cedar Hills, so the Cedar Hills store is actually the closest to my house. I don't check the Cedar Hills or Tanasbourne store that often though. Today was actually the first time I've set foot in the door of the Tualatin store and did so solely to see if I could pick up some guides, as well as use the $10 off a Blu-Ray movie for viewing a demo in the Magnolia theatre (which I used to get Casino Royale SE for $19.99). Do you frequent all 4 stores on the westside? I was too lazy to stop by the Tigard store near WA Square because I felt like I already had success at the Tualatin store and didn't feel like being that greedy. Both are on my way home from work (in N. Wilsonville).

If it makes you feel any better, the two copies of Condemned 2: Bloodshot :360: that I bought ended up having no discs in them, and I only found out after trading them to two different people.

I'd rather not be that specific ;). Suffice it to say the Tualatin store is the closest to me. And there's 4 on the west side? Oh, Tanasbourne - yeah, I've never been there, don't even know where it is. I go to the other 3 occasionally but haven't been to any Best Buy since the 75% off clearance stuff at Tualatin. You know that rack up in the front that has 50% off clearance games and is full of crap? Well, about a month or two ago that was chock full of good stuff and it was all 75% off. Then a few days later I went back and it had been cut back to 50% :lol:. So, yeah, I'm not really complaining - just giving you a hard time since for the last two drops (Target and Best Buy) you got to my closest stores before I did.

Wow - from the Wilsonville store they were empty? It is pretty easy to check 360 games for "the rattle" which indicates at least some sort of disc inside (I always make sure to check that before any trade or sale to know if I'm getting completely BS'd by the other party ;)).
 
i know this is off topic but while i was picking up my guides i noticed a huge cart of 19.99 games. dark sector was one that poped out i will go by again and see if anydeals

Crap, I had a 50/50 chance and picked the checkout with the girl instead of the bored guy. Had them all confiscated for destruction. Oh well, ya win some...
 
Does anyone know what the current price is on the Halo 3 guides @ BB?
I know they got pennied at CC, but last I knew they were still full price @ BB.
 
It looked like a storm hit the guides section at the Hartsdale and Yonkers, NY Best Buys. I only managed to grab a well hidden SMG hardcover at the Hartsdale store.
 
Damn. It.

I went back to the best buy that I made the discovery at, who told me to come back today to get the rest I left behind, only to be told the manager had them all destroyed. Son of a bitch.

At least I rescued all the HC guides, and got me a war of the lions guide - just wish I grabbed a god of war (I'm covered though by someone else).
 
Crood, no Assasin's Creed for me, a hoarder picked all of 'em up while I was playing Guitar Hero, poorly. I didn't see a FFT guide, I'll check another BB at the end of the week.
But he didn't take the Zelda PH HCs. :) :thumbsup:
 
Picked up at the Northcrest BB

They had several of the orange box and GoW, but only one other FFT. There wasn't too much else that interested me. All the hardcover guides have been gone for awhile from that BB.
 
Score! I picked up the final copies of the LOZ Phantom Hourglass and Super Mario Galaxy hardcover guides at my local BB store.:) I spotted several war of the Lions guides but I did not know they were pennied out.:( I then went to CC and bought my first ever CC $0.01 guide a Super Mario Galaxy premiere softcover guide.:) I had my eye on the Phantom Hourglass hardcover guide for a while. Thanks again CAG.
 
Went back today for a couple that I missed and Pokemon: Diamond & Pearl (P) was ringing up $19.99. Did this happen for anyone else?

Quake Wars is now ringing up at $0.68, and PES2008 was ringing up at $0.03.
 
North West Atlanta was hit hard. One store (Acworth) was totally barren of pennied guides. The angry siek struck again! Hunting for a galaxy HC and a handful of others today and tomorrow.

I hit up two stores on Long Island. The Patchogue Best Buy was barren from anything. I don't think it was a hoarder, since they decided to change the layout of the gaming area yet again.... badly. The normal games were on one side of the store. The PC games were towards the middle of the store. And the big box items (Rock Band, Wii Fit) were all the way on the other side...... umm... what? Actually now that i think of it, there was one lone Chaotic hidden in the mix of guides...

And I went to the South Setauket BB. They had some stuff, but not any hard covers. Army of Two with the comic, Bourne Conspiracy, Bully SE, Cheat Code Overload, Cheats & Codes Spring, and Summer 08, God of War PSP, Megaman Star Force (I dunno if it was the one that pennied though, is wat MMSF2, and it mentioned some sort of card game thing), and Rock Band. Oh, and they still have Burnout Paradise and PES2008 from the last drop. I guess the not-penny is messing with their heads.
 
I picked up Orange Box, Army of Two & Conan at the local BB in Pittsburgh (McKnight Road). Then I went to a the Exchange store that is right across the road and saw they had a ton of 'used' guides for sale that had been flipped from the BB drop. There was the SMG Hardcover, Assassins Creed Hardcover, Bully, DMC, Hulk, Ironman, Phantom Hourglass, R6V2, Rock Band, Pokeman. Ugh. :bomb:

Looks like I have to get there on the day of the drop if I want to score these guides. :cry:

EDIT: Which Phantom Hourglass guide just pennied at BB? It is the hardcover, correct? Because the softcover rang up at 9.99.

Hardcover only. Same with Assassin's Creed and Mario Galaxy.

I forgot about this but I do seem to recall in the past that if Best Buy has 1-3 copies of something that it doesn't show up as being in stock with the store locator which is probably true. I was able to snag all of the guides I was after today that last night showed up as being in stock at my store and they had 4+ copies of them. Final Fantasy: WotL showed up as not being in stock but I was pleasently surprised to see my store had two copies today, which makes sense to me as to why it was grayed out after reading your post.

Happened to me also. I get confused with all of the different Pokemon games and figured that I probably had the wrong guide. The one that was 19.99 for me had a sticker sheet in the back IIRC.

I should have also remembered to say earlier thanks for the heads up with the guides Visc!
