First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Quick question in reference to last week's GameStop drops...

Are there two different types of Tales of Vesperia guides or was that an error in the second post? I found ToV guides at 3 different stores recently and they have always rang up full price.
 
That's bizarre. So far as I can recall, only Brady has done the Tales of guides, and they've only done one print/edition of each of the console Tales games.

Were they being rung up with other penny guides which rang up correctly? I'm guessing that the clerks have all flatly lied to you about the price. But that's only a surmise. I could definately be wrong.
 
See that's the part that I am confused about...

Last week Thursday and Friday I went to a total of 3 different stores (Midland, MI and both stores in Saginaw, MI). The Tales of Vesperia were not on the shelves at any of the three stores. Then today I go to the store here in Midland and he scanned the guide and it came up 17.99 ( I know that it scanned without being altered as I watched him scan it and it showed up as 17.99 on the credit card machine). I just told him I forgot my Edge card with credit on it and that I would have to come back another time. Then I went to the Saginaw Square location and they also had them marked at 17.99, but I didn't have them scan them there.

Please also note that other things could go wrong like guides being pulled from the shelves but not taken out of the inventory or Best Buy marking certain items marked as not being eligible for pick up so it could be grayed out (even if they have 3+ on hand or just plain out any other dirty trick they could use to thwart us friendly devil customers :D Sorry for anyone that has no luck when the site says they have guide(s) in stock I guess I should have mentioned from the get go that this isn't 100% perfect but could be of some help for CAGs looking to get in on guides late and what stores might still have penny guides out. Dam it the system works it's the employees that are broken that would be messing things up if it's inaccurate :D

The store locator is not accurate as it is saying that a store near me has the Viva Pinata guide. I was there twice today and did not see it. I think it might be showing up that way because the guides are either hidden or being kept in the back, it is showing that many of the guides I saw there on Saturday are still in stock.

The store I hit yesterday that EASILY had 70-80 guides on the shelf that had pennied is listed as having the guides in stock, yet they were pulling them as I was leaving the store.

So, I think that just like the Gamestop locator, the Best Buy one may be a wee tad off.
 
I got out of work early enough to head back to the two BB's I had hit earlier; one had a ton of stuff, Limited Editions en masse but limited me to one copy of each guide. EVERYTHING was pulled. Same at another local store, although I did manage to find one Spore LE tucked behind a dozen standard versions of the guide.

I'm probably going to go to a couple of Western stores tomorrow to see what I can find, since everything's getting trashed everywhere and I'm sure other CAGs are going to need a hand tracking some of these down.

They could easily mark the item as NO PICK in RSS and then there's no way you'd see it would be in-stock, even if they had thousands of them in-stock. NO PICK is the status they put for an item when they can't find it from someone trying to get it for an in-store pickup order. If they can't find it, regardless if they have thousands of them, they'll mark it as NO PICK and it'll be greyed out from being selected for in-store pickup on BestBuy.com.

Only way you'll know the correct inventory for an item is have someone check it in RSS with the SKU #.
 
Wow seems like Bestbuy got some cheap entertainment watching us all come out and scurry over the the guides knowing they pulled all them.. One store I went to I asked the "Shirt" working the game area and he said yes I pulled all the guides before the store opened.....

I asked him if that meant they could not sell them and he said normally no but if there was anything particular I was looking for and I spurted out Lost Odyssey...

He went in back and came out with 5 guides and let me have them.. The other location was as dry as the cold air outside..

Well at least with the last round of drops and all the rejections they got a good idea on faces of people who are are these deal sites,we are pretty much the only people besides them that would know about this stuff.
 
Man..I just found this thread. Is it too late since the drops for BB was yesterday or should I still give it a shot? Theres 2 stores not too far away.
 
Its worth checking if they are close. Gonna check 2 more today on wy home from work that i've never been to, but they are 10 minutes away and 5 miles apart so no biggie. need to snag a SD card anyways.

Despite the tougher crackdowns everywhere this drop, there are still many stores that aren't pulling their guides. Of the 5 stores near me, only 1 actually pulled theirs. Three others had shitty selection, but it wasn't too bad. The fifth I went to was a goldmine. I wouldn't go too far out of the way, but it is absolutely worth checking out if you've got the time.

Yeah, I agree. Even with the crackdown I still saw guides at most stores. I was 75% successful with the BB drop versus around 10% successful with the GS drop.
 
Welp..nothing at my BBs(thats pennied). Also is it worth checking out the GS stores? Im gonna go later on today and see if Circuit City has any pennied guides.
 
BB's here around dolphin mall and south seem to have a different protocol, first come first serve.

God, was I ever such a noob!
If I only knew then what I was getting myself into.
 
I went back to my Best Buy today and they still had the same guides on the shelf from the previous day. I picked up 16 more and took them to the register. Different cashier than yesterday. She asked the greeter to make sure that these were supposed to be .01. The greeter called the media person and media told him that they went on clearance yesterday so they let me have them. I thought for a mintue that I was going to get shot down. I now have almost 50 guides from the BB drop so if anyone has a Gears of War 2 LE guide for trade let me know.

Someone raped the Dublin Ca store last night after I was in. Stripped out a bunch of Soul Calibur IV LE, Spore LE (including the two hidden ones I noticed earlier), a ton of Viva Pinata, some Final Fantasy, etc.

Not much left there now, you can get the Warhammer bundle, a couple of Fracture, Warioland, Brothers in Arms, Madden '09 LE. I was bummed cause I was trying to pick up another Viva Pinata for a CAG but the 10 or so I left there were all gone this morning.

With the Oblivion GOTY guides, there were two totally different UPC barcodes, which is why I think the two versions had to be listed.

One of them had a 'front lane game' type of UPC sticker covering the original one on the back of the guide, while the other one was just the original UPC.

Don't ask me why they had two versions though, unless the original UPC was ringing up as .01 in the system before they added the sticker UPC and after a while they corrected the original UPC to ring up the normal price.

The last guide to end up like that was, I believe, God Of War 2(original version). I seem to recall many CAG's reporting that 'ripping off the new sticker UPC makes the guide ring up .01' and many people being admonished for removing it.

Usually bigger stores like Best Buy have enclosed compactors for their trash, where there's no way to get into the dumpster, so you might be SOL on trying to dive for stuff.

Unfortunately, in the complete opposite direction, most Gamestop stores may be in strip malls near a food place and you'll end up with Kung Pow Chicken on your Tales Of Vesperia guide you try to get from there.

But at least you can get in and out of those dumpsters without risking life and limb most times.
 
Holy cow. The jig is up. My store pulled their remaining guides last night. I left half of it there yesterday for others on the way home just in case. I knew at the time I should have grabbed everything. They completely reorganized the guides alphabetically, would have taken hours. They have never pulled any penny guides that I know of, still an Army of Two bundle there I left for testing. I fear I may not score again at the store, what a shame. There must have been a company wide memo. They still haven't even restocked all the new guides like COD:WaW, GoW2, Fable II, Left4Dead, Fallout3. I asked an employee a week ago that you have none of any new guides and he said they are still sitting in the back, which ones do I want, he'd get them. So they paid somebody to pull the penny guides, reorganize everything, but still have not restocked their most valuable guides that sell quickly. I know for a fact there are no other CAGs in my area. I now really regret not grabbing everything there. What got trashed:

Went back today to pick up some to trade here and the place was cleaned out. My initial thought was they were pulled by staff, but I'm leaning more towards a hoarder who comes here or SD/FW. I say this because only the current drops were gone. There are still multiple copies of guides from the previous $.01 drop. I passed on getting multiples this go around because the last drops no one was looking for any of the extras I picked up. Even for a $.01 multiples start taking too much space up in my house. Guess this go around there are better or more tradeable titles. Just another life lesson as a CAG.

Unless you REALLY know that you can sell or trade all of those multiples, grabbing them is NOT really a good thing to do.

Why? Unless you live in a giant warehouse, you're going to run out of space very quickly, especially if you do this for EVERY drop.

Take it from a former hoarder, grabbing everything is NOT a good idea. Although, there are SOME exceptions to this, like when the ones you're grabbing are hardcovers or for RPG's and/or in demand games.
 
Any CAGers in the Orlando/Apopka/Altamonte Springs FL area land any of the 2/2 drops, or are the BBs around here managed far too well, pulling them before the public can grab them? I never seem to have any luck landing .01 guides in this area.

But you should probably pick up Mass Effect and Oblivion if you get a chance.

Ironically, I have a big attic and a huge basement. But you're right, a box of these things ways a ton. But this brings up a question I have, how do I give other CAGs my loot without having to pay so much in shipping for a bundle of new penny drop guides? I'm not doing paypal, they don't have my bank routing number anymore, just an anonymous credit card on file for purchases. The only thing know what to do is request old guides from them, but I got almost everything I want now. So I'm stuck with a big pile of LE guides that everybody wants.

I actually have two copies of the GTA IV guide, since I knew how good my closest store was at pulling the guides and I figured I'd never find a copy once it dropped or be denied when it did.

So, I actually bought a copy of the guide from FYE the same day I bought my PS3 in April of 2008 for FULL PRICE. Then, I ended up finding another copy from a local shop. I had originally picked it up for a friend, but it has sat here ever since because they didn't need or want it.

Plus, they kind of expected me to just donate it to them, which I would've done if I only paid $.01 or $1.

Find out what it costs to ship out guides via Media Mail with DC in a standard bubble mailer(since the LE guides shouldn't really NEED padding because they're normally hardcover), then put them on a sale/trade list for $x plus the real cost of media mail shipping.

The way I was doing it for a while was getting someone's zip code from them when they wanted X or Y guide, then going to the USPS site and estimating the postage cost. Once you do that, you can then give them a reasonable idea of what it'll cost to ship out that one guide.

Unless you can think of some other stuff you might want to straight up trade for, since I'm sure many here would do one of the LE guides for stuff like DVD's and what not.

I hit up the E. Colonial/Altamonte/Waterford Lakes BBs yesterday and was only able to get a Sonic Chronicles guide from Altamonte, and a 360 achievement guide from Waterford. I was pissed because the day before I was at the store on Colonial and they had 1 DQ IV and about 3 Lost Odyssey, I held them in my hand. Then I came back expecting the lazy employees to have left them out, but alas, they were all gone! I'm tempted to return and ask if they still have them in the back possibly, because I really wanted those. But I dunno if it's even worth it.
