Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Seven and a Half.

DAMN!!! Just when I was gonna order 30 of each and then take them to the local Gamestop after Christmas and ask if I could return them all. Then, when they go to ring them up and they all come up .01 each, yell something colorful, then give 'em the glitter bitch routine while singing a Christmas carol about how their DM's a dickwad.

But, I'll forgo that all, for now.

I missed it, but I did manage to get PGR4 x2, Warhawk x2, and Dawn of Mana at a B&M today. There are still some left in the Port Jeff-area store on Route 347, fellow liCAGs.
They are cancelling all the orders.
Both of mine were...

I had given up on getting guides at GS/Eb, but I was by a couple today and decided to stop in to see if they had Dawn of Mana. Each store had less than 6 guides on display. I wonder if the chain will not carry many in the future.

More than likely, they had the rest in the back. I've run into that same situation with several GS/EB and they all said that they had the rest in the back. I didn't ask why, but I imagine it relates to space and/or theft issues.

Many of my local GS stores stopped carrying a large display rack full of guides a while back, though I certainly hope I had nothing to do with that decision on their part. And, unfortunately, the only two who still carry a huge rack of them either pull them very quickly and/or STILL won't sell me them, even though it's their error that they're still on the shelf in the first place.

It used to be fun to go in the day of a drop and grab 20 guides, come up with them and ask for 'price checks', then snicker when they say 'uhhh this ones a penny' for every one and they just say 'here take em'.

One GS has a small rack beneath the register counter, just enough so that spilled liquids can seep into the guides.

Another has a very large guide section, and for that I'm happy - too bad they're on the ball when it comes to removing .01 guides.

Yeah, they did. Neither had Dawn of Mana, or so they said. It just makes me wonder how well they sell if they stick them in the back like that. I imagine not very well. But are they ever going to sell if they aren't in view? I can't imagine many people asking for them.

The other way to look at it is they sell so well that they don't need to be on display, but I doubt that is the case. So I just wonder if GS will only carry guides for the big sellers like Mario and Halo in the future. Space for videogames is at a premium these days and if guides aren't making GS much money they may go the way of the Dreamcast...:)
They are cancelling all the orders.
Mine's showing "Backordered" not cancelled. At least, at the moment. Probably will be a B/O that never gets filled.

Interesting enough that the title of the guides says "DO NOT DISPLAY" at the end of the names.

I don't get how this works? Do I have to find the guidess and take them to the cash register to scan how much it costs? I doubt they will put a 1 penny tag next to the item.

Yep, that's pretty much it.

actually sometimes they do have 1 cent tag.

Well, if the PS2, GC and XBox games weren't still making them $$$, they could start doing to them what they did to the Genesis/N64/PS1/DC games and put them on clearance. Of course, then people might get an actual discount on those games they sell @ inflated, Ebay-like prices(MvC2, Futurama, etc, etc), and as we all know, Gamestop HATES giving away stuff they probably paid the original owners $2-4 for for less than 600% or more over their cost to buy them.

Plus, once they finally dump the rest of the GB/GBC/GBA games, they can put those glass cases they use for them now to good use for the PSP/DS sections. Of course, then we'll have 30 threads on here a week about how 'I got sold a DS/PSP game without a box'. But yet if you take a second to think about WHERE you're buying it from, do you really ever expect to get the original box from GS?

one of the GS's I go buy trimmed down on the guides also. they used to have 4 full racks of guides. now they just have 4 small rows with 5-6 guides in each row. it looks like they were upgrading since now in the same area where the guides where are stacks of GH3 with Guitars.. another GS also did this about 6 months ago..I wonder if it has anything to do with the penny guide situation...

I am actually wondering how Bradly and Prima feel about this. Majority of their guides are only available at GS/EB, and if they are keeping them in the back they arent getting sold. This means a guide for less know titles only has window of 1 or 2 weeks before they are put in the back and stay there until they are pennied out. With Double Jump decide to make Soul Nomad guide Game Crazy exclusive I dont see GS/EB selling guide effectively like this.

I know the article in PSM from a number of months ago didn't help, where the one person they interviewed for the article remarked going in and getting guides for .01 from GS.

Well, mine are all processing, I'm presuming a cancel but if so eh. Makes it easier since I said I'd start shopping their again if these went through, I'd rather not start shopping at the hellhole again, so cancelation wouldn't bug me at this point.

You're going on the mistaken assumption that the strategy guide publishing business is a legitimate venture based on the logic of selling merchandise to the public for profit. Once you understand their real purpose as a massive front for an international cocaine smuggling ring, it all makes sense.

There used to be a day when I almost always bought the guide with the game. Crazy, I know, but they were a lot cheaper a few years ago.

Now, the MSRP on most guides is $19.99. Heck, The Orange Box guide is $24.99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????!!!!!!!!!!! I can get a pretty decent, but older 360 game for that price!!

I'm 100% American and all behind capitalism and the like, but guide prices are ridiculous now. I doubt I'll ever buy another full-priced guide for the rest of my life. The guide publishers really shot themselves in the foot, IMO.

Unless, of course, there are still tons of schmucks out there who pay $20 for guides, in which case I say "Bravo" to the publishers, I suppose.....

I won't lie, I'm tempted to buy the Assassins Creed guide at retail for 34.99, but it comes with a 100+ page hardcover artbook, not just a crappy guide.

Yea I know, there are reasons I haven't done it. =P I don't like the idea of a forced bundle.

Ya know, maybe I'm shooting myself in the foot here, but if the CAGs who find out about the drops wouldn't mind PMing me with the final lists, I might be up for doing the next guide thread. I figure with all the time I spend on this thread and CAG in general, I might as well contribute something besides smarmy responses every so often.

But, don't quote me on that just yet.

Gah bastards. Canceled my main order, the one I placed before it is still up oddly enough. DBags >_> I wanted a few binders for the cardgame too.

*edit

Other order canceled. :/ Wonder if emailing em to bitch gets a giftcard?

I'll quote you on that.
I enjoy your smarmy responses.

Would it be wrong for me to walk out the door with a penny guide at Game Stop if I know they will just tell me I can't buy it when they find out its a penny?

Hey all,

First time finding this thread. Going to BB tomorrow to look for a few but I have a quick question. The OP has it listed that Gears of War is pennied....Is that all Gears or just the special edition one.

A few of you talk about the SE version and gettin it, but if it is all (obviously not the new PC version) I may be in luck. Pretty sure the local BB has about 20 Gears guides right now.

Please don't chastise me, I don't think this qualifies as a nOOb question..:)

Thanks ahead.

EDIT: Nevermind, went back through some of the older posts and got the answer..I'll let you know what I find today.

I went to the Waterford CT Walmart today and picked up a copy of Super Paper Mario Official guide for the Wii for 2$. As always YMMV for Walmart. They had about 7ish left

They also had great deals such as Madden 04 / 05 for the PSone. ONLY 29.99$!!!!! /sarcasm off

On my way home yesterday, I picked up:

Lair x2
Warhawk
Spectrobes
Dawn of Mana
PGR4 x2

Left three copies of The Darkness there, as well as two copies of the SOCOM guide.

The extra copy of Lair and PGR4, as well as the copy of Spectrobes added to CML.

Are you fucking serious?

Well, does the guide belong to you? No, it's stealing.

You can't buy any shit from my house, but if you figured, "Oh, I can't buy it, let me grab it and run out," you'd get fucking shot.
I can't believe they actually shipped out my order yesterday evening.
You're lucky. Mine's sitting in backorder hell at the moment.
Guys, here's a good one for you. (GameStop/EB)

God of War 2 LIMITED EDITION GUIDE (pretty sure it's Brady)
Final Fantasy X Brady guide
Oh man!
I just got back from my Gamestop and was gonna say that.
Well about Gow2LE. Some employee grabbed it before I got there though.
I did leave with Warhawk, PGR4 and Rune Factory: Harvest Moon.
That last one hasn't been mentioned yet.

Nice, does anybody have the 6 digit item number, stock number or whatever it's called for these? Wondering if they have GoW 2 LE at my store but don't want to take a wasted trip.

reibeatall the God of War 2 LE guide would be Brady.
