Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Seven and a Half.

Ah, perfect week for me to be on jury duty. I was able to place an order online for a Forza 2 guide, we'll see how that goes. Looks like I'll be begging for an SPM guide.

Also, the following is currently listed as a penny on the BB website, but not available at any of my local stores...

Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus (Signature Series Game Guide) (SKU: 7976416)

Confirming Super Paper Mario, Forza 2, and Pokemon Ranger, all Prima (the NP Pokemon Ranger pennied last time). This lends some credence to the idea that guides penny by publisher; i.e., you're more likely to find a bunch of Primas or Bradygames than one or two of each.
Isn't that illegal? If it's marked/ringing up for a penny, don't they either have to sell it for that price, or just flat-out refuse to sell it at all? I didn't think they could adjust the price back up to full price.:bomb:
Try telling that to all of the asshole Gamestop store employees who did a price override and bumped the guides back to full price on me, even after I noticed and mentioned the price as coming up as .01 on their transaction lcd screen(that lil screen that has the credit card reader on it too).

I usually make a lil bit of a stink, saying 'I want it for what it rang up' and if they try n act all stupid and say it rang up full price or keep trying to bullshit me, I just walk out.

And, in Pennsylvania shieryda, companies are allowed to get away with fuckin murder practically, while employees and customers get shafted. As far as I know there is nothing in PA to protect us from being overcharged for items which ring up lower.

Personally, I wish all stores would start doing like a certain store chain which is disliked around here even more than Gamestop(it's initials are CC) and just have the items that can't be sold and are supposed to be pulled to ring up 'do not sell'. Then we wouldn't have all this rigamarole every time there's a drop.

Either that or publishers could stop charging 20 fuckin dollars for something which is used maybe 4 times per game, if ever.

Oh and uhhh Forza 2, Viva Pinata and the others that dropped were long since GONE from my local BB. They're getting too good at pulling them.

I'll have to check my bestbuy tomorow. Only guide i really want is Shivering Isles so if anyone gets one think of poor Brian who is stuck at work all day :whistle2:(

You know what I hate? That a lot of guides are starting to get shrinkwrapped so you can't even look to see if there's stuff in there worth buying the guide for? Like I'm going to drop 20 freakin bucks on a Heavenly Sword guide that I can't even see if it has any cool artwork or anything.

I can confirm shivering isles is pennied.

I also grabbed a viva pinata, and two super paper marios. I forget to check for pokemon ranger. I left a couple SPM on the shelf for anyone, and there are a few forza 2 guides. This is at the best buy in Maple Shade/Moorestown New Jersey, East Gate Square.

I managed to get one copy of Viva Pinata and the Prima Super Paper Mario. I was going to go back and get more, but the cashier called the media guys to confirm the price. I figured they would start pulling after that, so I left with what I had.

I can confirm that some Shivering Isles will ring up as .01 and some as 19.99. I brought a few to the register and some rang up as a .01 and some as 19.99. None were shrinkwrapped, but I believe the 19.99 ones had a sticker over the upc.

Picked up
x2 Super Paper Mario (Prima and Nintendo, nintendo one ringed up $14.99, but the lady changed it)
x2 Viva Pinata

The guides were on the shelf labeled 1 cent. Cashier even knew about them was like "gonna ebay them?" I thought they were suppose to pull these?

They are up for trade if anyone wants them

Ain't that the truth? That's my situation with GameCrazy. I've never gotten one penny guide from two stores and they consistently lie about the actual price, after I see the shock on their faces and a silent confirmation from a manager to give me a "deal" of 50% off one guide with MVP Membership only on the day I sign up. Thieves...

But I hope my BB has some guides, I guess I won't find out until tonight. SPM might be good for kicks even though I don't have a next-gen system save for the DS. They've been lax with penny guides if I can find 'em or hide 'em ahead of time...

I love it when I ignore this thread for a couple days and stuff finally gets pennied. :p

I'll be going that direction today anyway, guess I'll swing by and see if they have an SPM guide for me.
Ah, perfect week for me to be on jury duty.
OK, I was released from jury duty today. Decided to stop by BB on the way in to work and they hadn't yet pulled the guides. I walked out with 5 SPM guides. I was only going to get two, but was afraid the others would be destroyed, so I saved them in the name of CAG.

I think they do that for most anymore so that they don't get browsers who come in and find a solution for what they need help on, then walk back out having bought nothing.

I know I used to be a guide and magazine browser way back in the day, since I thought it was ridiculous to pay $10-15 for a guide back then or $5 for a magazine which was mostly fluff and ads otherwise.

BTW, another potential candidate for pennying might be the PS3 version Oblivion guide, since there's now a Game Of The Year black cover edition out.

lets see...
4 Super Paper Mario guides
6 Viva Pinata Guides
14 Shivering Isles Guides

To top it off, the people ringing me up even thanked me for doing them a favor and buying all of them, which made me feel all warm and tingly inside....

....maybe I should get that checked out....
That's just unnecessary. I can understand maybe 2-3 of each, but 14? That's ridiculous.
Actually I was going to assist those who weren't able to get them cheaply here, but don't let little bits of information get in your way...

I doubt you'll be able to find 5 people to trade/sell the shivering isles guide to, let alone 10+
I doubt you'll be able to find 5 people to trade/sell the shivering isles guide to, let alone 10+
Actually I'd be willing to just get reimbursed for shipping on them and call it even, though I would limit it to one per person.

THERE ARE 2 VERSIONS OF THE SHIVERING ISLES GUIDE:
ISBN: 0-7615-5653-2
ISBN: 0-7615-5549-8

The first one listed is actually stickered over the other one. IDK which, but one of them rang up for a penny, and one rang up 19.99. Since the one rang up for a penny, the clerk canceled the 19.99 and just scanned the penny one.

Also picked up an extra Forza and Super Paper Mario, along with a couple Shivering Isles for trade. Would really like a Viva Pinata guide if anyone has one.
Actually I'd be willing to just get reimbursed for shipping on them and call it even, though I would limit it to one per person.
Brian9824 was looking for those guides, so he's one who would be happy with copies of them.

Oh I'm sure he's going to be in touch with me by the end of the night, what with him introducing me to this thread and all
So stickered Shivering Isles is a cent, non-stickered is still full price?
Can someone give definite confirmation which one is the .01 guide and whether it's stickered or not?

can i get a free Super Paper Mario guide?

Hey now, I resemble that remark, but since the local DM for the Gamestop stores put the official freeze on anyone selling any pennied guides/merchandise and the toughness of getting them from TRU, plus the recent crackdown by BB, I'm no longer grabbing assloads of worthless guides.

Heck, I'm lucky if I grab 1-2 per drop anymore and most times, those are just ones people at the stores missed.

Verified, the stickered Shivering Isles guide is pennied.

Stopped by the same BB I had cleansed of SPM guides earlier and picked up 5 Shivering Isle guides and 4 Pokemon Ranger guides. Couldn't find any Viva Pinata guides. I have a Forza 2 guide waiting at the other location, I'll check it for the other guides tonight hopefully.

To the possible CAG who asked me if I had found any Rogue Galaxy guides (which I had not)...I tried to find you after picking up the stack of guides to see if you were indeed a CAG and wanted any of them, but I couldn't locate you. Sorry, possible CAG person.

Oh, joy! Penny guides have returned to my BB.

There were a ton of Shivering Isles guides but I'll wait until tomorrow to pick them up.

Otherwise I got...

-Super Paper Mario
-Viva Pinata
-Pokemon Ranger

Time to update my guide list.

Stealth drops rock. These guides would probably have lasted into next week. I was able to get away from a single BB with:

Super Paper Mario (Prima) x4
Viva Pinata x4
Shivering Isles x3
Pokemon Ranger (Prima)

There were still a few left of everything except for Pokemon Ranger. I meant to check on the Zelda TP GC Prima guide that's been off the site for a while, but I was so excited with my haul that I forgot :dunce:. I'll check it tomorrow.

Oh, and I was a victim of the Shivering Isles Sticker/No Sticker fiasco. I was afraid the cashier would call a manager over at that point, but she happily deleted the full price guide.

Ah, so the other version of Pokemon Ranger is pennied too.

So that means this drop included:

Forza 2
Pokemon Ranger (Prima)
Shivering Isles (Stickered)
Super Paper Mario (Prima)
Viva Pinata

And I think that's it?

Picked up some Viva Pinatas if anyone is still looking for them. Marked at 9.99 on the shelf unlike another BB where I saw my first $0.01 stickers (on Forza).

Posted with the BB item #s a couple pages back...

Dropped by my local BB today, only found a Pokemon Ranger guide. Better than nothing I guess. It seems like they recently hired some new cashiers, the girl that rang me up was the kindest and most sincere that I've ran into so far. I just hope they dont harden up as the days go on.....

Got lucky -

Super Paper Mario x2
Viva Pinata
Forza 2 x3

Needed one of each, the rest go to the CML.

Didn't know about the SI guide - have to check tomorrow.

Thanks OP.

Whoever's updating the wiki, may it be gwen or Rocko or whoever, Im seeing "Gamespot" instead of "Gamestop" Errmmm, might want to get on that ;)

I went back earlier today they had put the Super Paper Mario Prima guides back with the other guides I also took a Viva Pinata guide. I was walking to the register I saw a female cashier working yes! right before I got on line I saw the manager that overrided the SPM guides to $16.99 two days ago. The guides went back I did not even try.
