Grabbed the last SPM guide from my store. They had other stuff that was pennied, but I just bought the guide with a copy of the game as cover - works every time at TRU, did the trick here. Cashier commented that it was a penny, but said I'd get it because that's what it rang up as. And promptly placed a call to media to check on such things as I left. I may have gotten lucky without buying the game, but I figure it's incentive for them not to give me a hassle with my transaction.

Game will be going back this weekend.

Oh, I also picked up the employee orientation pamphlet that was left on the guide rack, I'll be using it to reverse engineer their sales techniques. It would appear I am a "Buzz."

I still wonder why so many of you do that, make a purchase to 'cover up' the guide transaction. I mean, the one and ONLY time I tried that, they still called a manager over and he told them to 'override to the original cover price', at which point I didn't even argue, I just said 'it rang up cheaper, but since you're not gonna honor the price, I just won't buy anything from here. BYE.' Then, I walked out.

No muss, no fuss. And since then, I refuse to try and hide the fact that I'm a devil customer.

If I rarely went to these stores, it would be a big hassle, but since I go there multiple times within a given 30 day period, it's not a big deal to return something I bought and didn't want.

It works wonders at TRU because they just assume it's a promo for buying the guide with the game.

Stopped by a GS today about hitting up Kmart and got lucky.
I renewed my GS card in same transaction to smooth over the deal.

Got Shining Force EXA, FF7 Dirge and Gears LE - only ones i wanted from last drop.

I'll be heading out to BB tomorrow. While it seems late, judging by the fact that there was still a Rogue Galaxy - and the only one that had been there since it dropped to $10 - at my BB last weekend, I think that no one buys penny guides around here and they're never pulled. I should be able to grab at least a Shivering Isles, Viva, and SPM Prima, as well as my online ordered Forza 2. Hopefully I can get some multiples for trade fodder. Or just for the hell of it.

Ordered 2 Forza 2's by mistake.
Got Super Paper Mario, Shivering Isles, and Dirge of Cerberus yesterday.
Got Super Paper Mario and Yoshi's Island 2 at Best Buy 1 today.
Got my Forza 2's, Viva Pinata and Pokemon Ranger at Best Buy 2 today.
returned to best Buy 2 for another Viva Pinata and Pokemon Ranger.

I'm gonna work on my first attempt at a trade list later at some point.
The Yoshi's Island DS guide?
I think he means the Yoshi's Island DS (Prima) guide. It was pennied out awhile ago. Kind of looks like a little book like the spyro:new beginning or those 1000 cheat code books that BB has.

Has anyone found a copy of the Yoshi's Island DS Prima guide that didn't have warped/bent/wrinkled pages? I got five copies of it over the course of a month or so and every one has those issues. Not that it's useless, I'm just curious if it's an issue with the size or just a bad batch.

When I picked up the Super Paper Mario, Shivering Isles, and Dirge of Cerberus guides the dude rang them up not problem. I think he bought the last SI one.

I bought the Prima Yoshi's Island 2 DS guide and the other SPM guide the chick made me wait 5 minutes for a manager. She says
"Are these supposed to be a penny?"
and he says
"Did they ring up a penny? Then they're a penny"

I picked up 2 of them back in June, though it looks like they were miscut, since the tops and bottoms of the pages on mine extend above and below the cover. So, maybe the whole run was done poorly?

Sounds like it. I'm not sure why they made it that size to begin with. It's rather inconvenient, IMO.

I made out like a damn bandit at BB. I'll post a list in a bit for anyone who cares. I think I got most everything they had. I think I left one Forza 2, one GRAW2, and Splinter Cell DA, and maybe some Pokemon guides since I forgot which were pennied and which weren't.

Edit:
Got out of BB with:

Elder Scrolls IV Shivering Isles x2
Forza Motorsport 2 x4
GRAW2 x2
Shadowrun x1 (The only copy that was shrinkwrapped and didn't have to sticker over the UPC making it full price. Huzzah)
Super Paper Mario x3
Viva Pinata x2

Fourteen cents.

So did you have to break a quarter or were you carrying exact change?

Believe it's only the regular God of War II guides, but only the non-shrinkwrapped ones w/o a sticker over the barcode (I have yet to see any shrinkwrapped ones that did not have a barcode sticker).
Went to BB and found a few God of War 2 guides (regular and the LE one). Is the regular or LE one pennied out?
As eugaet said, only Regular (granted I've never even seen an LE one so for all I know they might be pennied too, but I doubt it), and it has to have no sticker over the barcode on the back. The original barcode on the book rings up as a penny, the sticker over the UPC will be full price.

It's the same deal with Shadowrun. Shrinkwrapped and stickered are full price, no sticker is a penny.

Strangely enough, Shivering Isles is only a penny with a sticker covering the UPC, and the sticker is on the book itself, no shrinkwrap.

I had two dimes.

Didn't see any stickers on it. Might go pick some up, but I doubt I will since i don't even have that game. Thanks to all that replied

If you are even moderately interested in getting GoW2, go and get a copy. I tend to keep my eyes open for guides for games I already have or think I will have eventually. So that way when you do get the game, you're all set up.

Cool .. just picked up Forza 2 + Super Paper Mario, best two cents I've ever spent. The employees even told me which ones were left, and helped me find 'em.

I've picked up a couple of copies of Shadowrun, shrink wrapped and stickered for 0.01 at least a couple of diff BBs.

Hehe, found the last copy of the Resistance guide for a penny today at BB. Looks like the Yoshi's Island DS guide is gone at my BB though.

Oh? That's most strange.

The three copies I got are cut correctly and unwrinkled. Still, the pages are really stiff and the book is hard to keep open. Kinda makes me wonder why Prima went the mini book direction when all their other Nintendo guides are full sized.

I went to BB today & they had a cart of stuff for 50% off, in it were 4 Gears Of War LE guides marked $30 so that makes them $15. I just thought to myself, some sucker is going to buy these for $15! lol Meanwhile I walked out with Super Paper Mario, Viva Pinata, & Pokemon Ranger guides. :)

Picked up a few more:

Super Paper Mario
Viva Pinata

and

Shivering Isles (didn't have these before)!

Then I went to my boy at a Gamestop, and he hooked me up with 2 sealed Kingdom Hearts II LE guides.

Not a bad day.

i got these today at gamecrazy:

metal gear solid portable ops
yakuza
grandia 3
and romancing saga x4

the guy was nice about it. i kept asking about the list but he kinda ignored the question everytime i brought it up. good haul anyways.

after setting up a job interview at a photo studio I went across the street to the same BB I always go to and found 3 GRAW 2 guides (1 sealed) and 3 Pokemon Ranger guides. I seem to be sitting on an untapped gold mine here.

First, I wanted to apologize to Rocko because in catching up with what I missed in the past week~ish, I re-read my earlier post (posst 784), and it sounded pretty rude & obnoxious. Didn't mean for it to come across like that.

Note to self: new list begins at post 796.

I picked up a laptop, desktop, and a bunch of pennied guides at BB last week. Decided I didn't need the laptop, brought it back (yay 0% financing) and checked the shelves, then decided to have a few prices checked.

Walked out with

GTA Vice City Stories x5
God of War II Limited Edition x6
Gears of War Limited Edition x2
SOCOM Combined Assault
Guitar Hero 2

Did the GOW 2 LE ring up a penny?
Did the GOW 2 LE ring up a penny?
It did for me when I got my 2. I'm more curious about the Gears of War LE guides, because there's a ton left here.

I dont even see GoW2 guides, regular or LE at my BB. Though I did just return and got:

Forza 2
Pokemon Ranger x 3
Shivering Isles x 3

Actually I've noticed that one to be YMMV in some areas, a friend in Baltimore attempted to get some and they were still regular price there. Thats why I'm curious to the Gears of War guides.

Well...im asking this becuase I asked this question earlier and pther people said it was only the regular edition.

My bb has both the regular and LE, gonna stop by tomorrow

Crap!!! I wanted at least a couple God Of War LE guides, since my one friend has the game and I plan on getting it EVENTUALLY, but my local BB's have been super fast at pulling guides so I know I'm SOL.

I know the one store up in an area I usually hit when my one cousin goes to an out of state auto auction had 4-5 of them in stock, but we haven't been going up there lately. So again, I'm SOL.

Maybe with any luck my local BB's didn't pull them yet?

Then again, I don't think I've seen Gears Of War or God Of War II regular or LE version guides at my local BB's for about a month now.

It may be YMMV, but I don't buy guides unless they're pennied; Persona 3 being the only exception in the past decade. :D

Only guide I've bought in the past 3 years or so that wasn't pennied was MK Armageddon, but only cause my only source for possibly getting it when it pennied(BB) started this infernal crackdown.

And apparently, the crackdown isn't truly nationwide, since others are still getting guides. My area just sucks though, I guess.

Yup, it's apparently regional, as my BB not only had tons of the guides (even after I picked up 2-3 of most of them), but when I stopped in today the ones that were left were marked a penny, muahaha.

I guess this area feels we're not deserving of any deals. Only area I've ever seen with actual price tags marked .01 on the guides was out by northern NJ by Seacaucus, back when I used to hit an auction out that way. And lately, if I pick up even ONE guide that comes up a penny, there's an immediate call to media to pull or scan the other guides, to assure that there's no other penny guides left on the shelf.

At least that's how they acted when I picked up their last remaining non black bar(PS3 updated) Oblivion guide, which i had 'stashed' on the bottom shelf in the PC section, where nothing but the occasional overstock gets put. I basically 'hid' it in plain sight and they never even moved it.

Did the GOW II guides have sticker barcodes or was it the actual UPC on the guide? I saw some that had the stickers but didn't think they were pennied yet dammit.

I am pretty sure the GOW 2 Limited Edition guide was on the site a few days ago when the last drop occurred, but it's gone now. The Gears LE guide has been off the site for a while, I believe.

It's worth a check tomorrow. I know I've seen both guides somewhere around here.

Whoa, dude...I usually just buy a $5 game to pad my penny guide purchases.
