Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Seven and a Half.

Thanks for the BB list.

I was able to grab:
Final Fantasy II
Pokemon Battle Revolution
Zelda Twightlight Princess Premeire edition (gamecube)
The Darkness

I had some trouble getting the Pokemon Battle revolution, I thought it was the nintendo copy, but that was full price. So the cashier let me go grab the Prima guide and that rang up for a penny.

I was extremely disapointed that I couldn't find a copy of Final Fantasy III. That was the one guide I wanted from the list. BTW, this is off topic, but I managed to snag FFIII for the DS from a toys r us for $20 two weeks ago. That may have been YMMV though. Most places sell it for $40, even the TRU website.

Made out like a bandit at BB. I got most everything they had. I know I left some copies of Fantastic Four, Meet the Robinsons, Pirates, and Shadowrun. Possibly Transformers as well. I also didn't realize Ninaj Gaiden Sigma was pennied, so I left a whole trove of those. I also didn't bother buying the You & Wii book.

I have to go back to the area the day Mario Galaxy comes out, so I'll pick up whatever I left when I go then. Picked up 34 guides total.

OK, besides being the source of guide pulling lately, I can now add my local Best Buy as the source of guide weirdness.

I found the following:

Gears Of War x4

They PC'd and rang up $19.99 @ the register AND on one of the pricing guns. As usual, one of the UPC barcodes didn't scan in the system when I took the guides up to the register, so they tried the other one. And up came the $19.99 price.

I didn't check the SKU on the sticker on the front versus the one listed on CAG, but there was no sticker over the back UPCs(as I thought I read someone else saying there was on a GOW guide).

So, strike 1 for me as far as guides ringing up more than they're suppposed to.
Dude, you pricematched a penny guide...now that takes balls! I bow down to the master. You really are the cheapest gamer.:applause: :applause: :applause:
Thing is, I don't think I would've been able to get away with it if there was a manager on duty. Plus, I found a really young female clerk who was kind of shocked that I wanted to PM something for .01. She did ask a dept manager, who proceeded to begrudgingly let me do the PM, but said 'only one'. I kinda laughed and was about to go back and bring up the other 10-12 copies of the guide and say 'one per transaction, right?'. But, I didn't wanna press my luck.

I tried again the next week, but there was a real manager on duty who said 'we're not gonna pm anything for a penny'. I tried using their receipt from the PM the week prior. But hey, at least I can say I got a guide from CC for a penny.

It took me 4 different Best Buys but I was able to find every single new penny guide except the Zelda: Twilight Princess Gamecube guide. Are other people having the same problem finding that guide? At the 4th Best Buy I also found a stash of the God of War 2 LE guides that I had been looking for for over a month.

This truly must've been a stealth drop as it appeared that all 4 Best Buys I visited did not pull their guides like they had been doing for previous drops.

I was never able to find that guide at the 3 stores I went to as well

I think I found every guide on the list (or close to it, don't really remember) except the TP guide. They had two Wii versions, but no GC.

Damn a CAGer must live in the Secaucus / Clifton NJ area cause the 2 Best Buys I passed today had nothing worthwhile to pickup. All that was left were beat up copies of guides that I didn't want to pick up anyways...

I found a Zelda: TP GC guide but there was no barcode on it so I couldn't get it. I'm assuming it was originally sealed and there was a barcode on the plastic wrap. I got everything else though.

The Best Buy that I found TP at had everything pulled. I looked around the store anyway and they had two TP guides sitting in the gamecube section, to get people who buy the game to buy the guide. I got lucky.

Sorry, got swamped with work last week. I need to catch up on stuff in here, but because I had to go and delete and edit a bunch of y'alls Trade/Want lists, I don't have time to update the wiki just now. Thanks so much, guys.
Say what? Looks like those two aren't in the wiki from the 10-25 drop. Or was the another drop I should know about from GS?
Yeah, there are a few guides that are missing from the wiki from that 10/25ish drop.

I need to know if anyone can confirm exactly which TP guides BB dropped. Also, was the diamond/pearl Pokedex dropped at any store, or did I read that wrong?
Hey TomoyoN, which BB in Paramus did you score at, the one down by the mall or the other one heading toward Mahwah?
The one by the mall... I wasn't really there to check out the Best Buy but was at the mall buying an iPhone for a friend.
The Zelda TP GameCube Premiere edition is the one that dropped.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl pokedox did not drop I believe.
I can confirm this. I was at 2 BB's over the weekend and got the LOZ:TP Premiere Edition for GC but the Diamond/Pearl still rang up full price.

Take that back, FINALLY found it (Zelda) and to top it off this BB also had GOW2 LE guide... so glad I was able to snag one

Going back to BB tomorrow to get a GHIII faceplate I ordered online for $0.01. I'll grab some Ninja Gaiden guides, as well as a few of whatever I left behind. May as well, since no one else buys them, and the cashiers actually thank me for buying them (although it's a pair of cashiers I know work on weekends. I don't know the people who work during the week).

Found a GOWII LE guide shrinkwrapped last week that scanned at full price.

Anyone have a guess when the hardcover Zelda Phantom Hourglass guide might drop at BB like the Twilight Princess hardcover dropped there last year? I was able to get the TP HC for like 6 bucks at BB last year.

Ahhh ok, I was wondering why the hell it rang up full price. This is like the Halo 2 guide for the PC version, which came out 1-2 years after the Xbox version. At least those were CLEARLY marked and you didn't have to strain looking for the lettering at the bottom of the front cover.

Thanks for clearing that up.

The PC one for some reason is much thinner than the 360 guide, and believe it has a glossy cover as well

I just found a Castlevania Portrait of Ruin guide at Goodwill of all places. It still had the $0.01 pennied GS price sticker on it.

It cost me a total of $0.53.

Thanks for the TP/gamecube confirmation folks. And the pokedex has not been pennied out at any stores? Cool. Thanks.
We're sorry, mom. We promise not to do it again.
I just want you all to keep the thread nice for when company comes over.

Hey Richard, is that Alec Baldwin in your avatar? Gad, he looks horrible.
Wouldn't that be sweet if retailers would start donating penny guides to Goodwill.

I noticed the Nintendo brand Super Paper Mario guide went down by 30% at Target.
Even if that happened, it'd be a 40 minute drive with gas @ over $3 a gallon around here for me just to get to a Goodwill store and I'm not even 100% sure if the retail store I saw under construction a few months ago is completed or not yet. It would be quite the waste of time.

Although, I have really thought about donating a boxload of my excess guides to Salvation Army around here, so I could see them try charging $5 a shot for them and having them end up getting sent to some recycler or trashed because they didn't sell.

Thrift stores around here don't understand the meaning of the word THRIFT and feel anything gaming related is worth its weight in gold, even bootleg copies of Dreamcast games or other pirated stuff.
And the pokedex has not been pennied out at any stores?
actually yes it has. at Best Buy. The Pokemon Pocket Pokedex. The SKU is: 7862903

Even if the stores donated to Goodwill, the prices may be too high to warrant purchase. I've seen the King Kong guide at a Goodwill for $7.99.

Better to buy the guides at a retail store for a penny and then donate them to Goodwill. Tax deductions all the way.

I went to the Times Square Toys R Us today, and I hit the jackpot!
Kingdom Hearts II, the Warriors, Shadow of the Colossus, Xenosaga II, and probably others.
When I tried to buy them, THEY WOULDN'T LET ME because they were a freakin' penny each and that it was against store policy. I pushed to buy them several times and they wouldn't budge. Should I have done something more.

Man, if they couldn't sell them, they should have pulled them off the shelves months ago.
fuckers could have donated them to the Public Library if they weren't willing to stock my own.:bomb:

TRU is the only store chain around here that adamantly refuses to sell them to me 90-95% of the time anymore, after I scored about 50-60 guides from them in one shot months ago. Gamestop is a waste locally, unless I get a clerk who doesn't give a crap. And Best Buy has become so good @ pulling them lately, I never find anything GOOD left @ my local stores.

So, don't feel so bad, it's happened to all of us at one time or another.

My Gamestop sells them to me, but they are always very good about pulling them. The clerks know me at one store and always tell me that they've pulled them all.

My Best Buy is great. No one else buys them there, and I know at least four clerks that will sell them to me, and one that definitely won't. Usually at least one of the four is working, so I can get away with them.

Never seen a penny guide at TRU.

BB was good the past couple of months, save this last drop, and then not good prior to that, save some random bits of lucky.

TRU was a mixed bag for a while, until I had a long and drawn out phone call with the regional manager last summer about the issue I had with not being able to buy penny guides that were on the floor. Since then, no such luck.

I have to say, with this latest drop making the thread explode, I think it is definitely time for Penny Guide Thread 9. We had said it'd happen if there was a big drop, and that sort of came and went.

GS = Know the guys. They tell me what dropped and let me take anything. (not pay, take)

TRU = Good friend works in R-Zone. Holds them for me, then I buy from him.

BB = Good friends brother works there. Lets me buy with no problem. They never pull only re sticker.

GC = Semi - know the guys and they let me buy the guides. (so close to FFVIII!!)

I've only been into the guides recently and it's great fun. I have about 70 in my collection. Spent maybe $70 total so $1.00 a guides not bad. Especially since I have both Prima special editions Zelda's, GoW LE, and FFXII LE.

Always running to the mall during lunch or after work after catching wind of a drop. I'll even call GS and they'll hold stuff for me. I'm at the point I check this thread every half hour. Always at 6am when I get up. Always at 4pm when I get home. Many a time after.

The only thing is there's usually only 1 or maybe 2 guides that anyone else would want to trade for. That's why my trade list kinda sucks. I keep an eye out for guides others may want.

I'm gonna be moving in a few months and I wanna build up some trade feedback because I have:
4 BB's, 6 GS's, 2 GC's,2 CC's 2 KM's and 3 Sears
(getting a BB and GS in town soon too!)
within' 30 minutes in any direction and where I'm moving I'll have:
1 BB 45 min away
1 GS 10 min
1 CC 10 min (they always put the clearance games on display)
1 KM 30 min
1 Sears that doesn't sell games
NO GC's

So I'm gonna need a lot of help from my few friends up north and on CAG.
I'll have plenty of pawn shops and flea markets though.

The Official Nintendo Pokemon Battle Revolution rung up at full price at my best buy...

I manages to get

Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Mario PArty8
Final Fantasy II
