Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread X(Ten)

Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

just put all new drops in red font so iatcg can find them, and its not even a big deal.
So.... Why post at all?
This is my thought as well. There is not one thread on CAG I have seen like this one, where the frequent posters/visitors are like dictators. I mean, I understand that it can get annoying when people ask about guide drops, but let's face it, it's the internet, there will always be useless people who serve no purpose other than to annoy you. But there's a shit ton of deal threads on CAG, and all of them function fine. I don't see why a few select users in this thread need to explode at every other post here.
And every week Ubiiquitous replies telling SacredDr not to post clutter to the thread. And every week both of their posts get deleted as clutter.

Found some clearance guides at Target today (Diablo 2 and some others). Didn't pick up any but will post the skus if they're still there when I go back later this week. Every once in awhile they'll show up as part of the regular Target clearance but I don't think they're tracked in that thread. Maybe we should start tracking those skus here?
If you and others who find the reduced price guides at Target want to get together a list of the ones you've all seen, I'll post it to the second post, much like I did with Circuit City while they were still in business.
So.... Why post at all? I'm seriously annoyed with the back seat moderation too. Look it's a thread that people can post in and request if people happened to notice any drops. Whenever I happen to be at BB I'll check guides every time and I have reported on drops before but that won't stop me from asking if anyone happened to go to BB on Monday. Most of us have different schedules and won't be able to go to BB until others already have had the chance to go and check. This doesn't mean that it is expected that people go out of their way to check for us, but you do realize we have people that go there every Monday or work at best buy that happen to check and can post whether there were drops. So the question gets asked every week. So what? Don't respond to it if you don't like it. As for IATCG: great job on the thread but despite creating it you have no moderation rights to say who and what gets posted in it. You'll continue to have people posting whatever they want in here. Shrike can delete this if he wants but this is about making a point. Let the mods do what they feel is right regardless of whether it is or not. You guys aren't mods here so quit making up these rules that you guys can't enforce.
Honestly, I'd still like Cheapy's opinion on which is worse for the new servers, having multiple threads for the same store/clearance/whatever or having less but larger more bloated threads. If Cheapy(or really anyone with experience in such things) can tell me one way or the other as to which clogs up the servers WORSE, then I'll stop with bitching about the useless posts.

But really(and it's been said before), whenever someone posts in this thread I think a drop occured and scramble to load it up, only to find that it's the same 3-4 numbskulls asking 'duhhhhh did anything drop' on a Monday.

I applaud fuss and whoever else we have giving us heads up on drops and those people who do go out and check stuff that may have dropped. If not for all of you, this thread could not continue to exist.

As for me not having any moderation rights, I'm the one who created this iteration of it and I'm the one who maintains it, so I would think that gives me some sort of right to say 'stop posting useless shit', no?

Now, if I ever got the mighty mod powers.......:whistle2:#....that's ALL I'm saying on that.
So the question gets asked every week. So what? Don't respond to it if you don't like it.
For many, its a natural reaction out of sheer frustration. The responder attempts to teach the person appropriate netiquette and ask the repeat offenders to shutten Sie up, bitte. It becomes more frustrating when the target either misses the hint entirely or simply ignores the advice and continues to post for no other apparant reason but to take up space. And the cycle continues with no real solution other than a mod having to waste their time by deleting all sorts of crap. But not actually doing anything productive like banning someone, as it's a more annoyance out of ignorance (actual or intentional) and we're nice enough to put up with the nonsense for now.
just put all new drops in red font so iatcg can find them, and its not even a big deal.
This is the best policy. Here and in any of the mega threads.

I can't put my posts in red text as I'm using CAG for iPhone. But I have contributed to this thread several times and will continue to as I find drops. But you'll have to look for normal text from me.

That's about the only time that all of the yappity yap really gets on my nerves anymore, aside from the usual suspects doing the 'duhhh anything dropped' thing, is when I gotta sift through the 'scores' posts and mindless drivel to find info about drops.

But I do thank you for contributing nonetheless.

Then i'd call in sick, that's just how much of a huge collector i am of game guides!!!! As to "every" monday, no it's just been the past 3 weeks that i've asked on each monday if someone had a chance to price check guides because i moved into a new 3 bedroom house and i'm really low on time, once things settle down i'll be able to check guides on my own like i normally do!

You realize for the lost wages you'd get for calling in sick you could probably buy every guide at retail price that you want from a drop?

At a $100 bones a day i could buy 5 guides at $20 each and these wouldn't be the limited editions or anything, if they were Limited Editions at $35 each i could get 3 guides.....hmmm, i think i'd rather take the day off vs slaving away and getting 5 or so guides but you can go work hard and pay full price for those 5 guides! since you could "buy every guide at retail price"! ROFL!

well...I wouldn't go that far-most books never sell at msrp-and most guides can be found, at a normal retail situation, to be around 30-40% of their msrp, so it'll be around 12-14 dollars-and that comes out to be around 8 guides you can buy.

Where are you getting your guides? I've never seen a guide market below MSRP before being pennied except at CC (75% off deal) and maybe one or two guides at BB (eg. Orange Box, GoW 2)

If he gets paid time off I can think of better uses of it then going guide hunting. Not to mention 99% of the guides can be gotten for a fraction of the cost from other CAG's after drops.

ROFL, when there's 15-20 guides that drop in price i usually grab at least 2 but no more than 3 copies per guide unless it's something great like the 5 SEALED copies of Fable 2 LE i picked up a couple weeks ago at a out of the way BB!

Problem solved, as I think he's just a waste of space, parasting himself on CAG and trolling, so we don't need any more of that type of user around here.

OK here's my question to see how I could contribute. How can I check the price of guides without taking a huge stack to the register? BB, Gamestop, and Game Crazy don't have in-store price scanners.

Even using the in-store kiosk at BBy doesn't work if the guide is pennied, as they tend to delete the SKU # and UPC # from BBy.com when they penny out.

I will bring a few choice guides up and ask for a price check. I explain to the cashier that occasionally they drop in price on the system or go on clearance and are mislabeled. Especially at BB when they will drop some guides to less than MSRP. I have not run into anyone that was a complete ass about it. (YET)
OK here's my question to see how I could contribute. How can I check the price of guides without taking a huge stack to the register? BB, Gamestop, and Game Crazy don't have in-store price scanners.
Some Best Buy stores do have scanners though. If you know someone who works there though and is cool about it, you can always gets him or her to get a hand scanner to check. I've always come across them and other deals at Best Buy by just looking around in the game department and seeing the department manager with the list of drops. They usually come to me and ask if they can help and willingly just show me the list.

Gamestop usually can be checked through guides dropping online like people have noticed. It's usually not a lot, so maybe going to the GS and picking one of the potential drop guides you want and bringing it up to check and see if it is MSRP won't be as suspicious. Even though they drop on the site, people still have to check in store to confirm.

Typically for me, Gamecrazy people could care less about the guides (or at least in my area). They usually get the list but don't do anything about it because no one generally buys them after release week.
OK here's my question to see how I could contribute. How can I check the price of guides without taking a huge stack to the register? I'll take up a couple guides which either I know or suspect may have dropped, and I ask if they could check the prices. I'll usually say something like, "I can't remember if it was here or another store that marked these down, could you double check the price for me?" or "I think your website clearanced these, could you check to see if they dropped here, too?"

The Final Fantasy XII Limited Edition guide is gone from the website. Has it been that way for awhile? I know of one store in Vegas that still has a couple. Last I checked, they were $14.99. Might be worth a trip there today!

Asking them to check prices is a pretty tough job to do. I walk up to whoever is back at the electronics register and say "Hey, can you price check these for me". They usually respond with a variety of phrases such as yes, ok, sure, yep. I then say "Thanks" and either get a bunch of penny guides or say "Thanks" and make a trip back to the guide section to put them back. It's rather intense.

I just find the hand scanner, press F10 which starts the pricing screen, and start scanning away. Sometimes finding an unmanned station can be a problem, but so far I've been successful.

I hope that guy enjoys this:

That guide has long been taken off the website. I'm talking months. It was still $14.99 last I checked, which was the same day the PoP, Mirror's Edge, and Fallout 3 LE guides dropped. I feel like they forgot about this one somehow. I'm getting more and more inclined to pick one up at this price...

A couple years back I was in a CC in Seattle and wanted to check some guides. There were no employees around and the system was notoriously easy to hack for employees' codes. It took me about 15 seconds to find codes for an employee who was on the clock and I started scanning guides.

Ah. I checked today as well. You know, for $14.99, it ain't a bad guide at all.

I actually asked the clerk working if any guides dropped today and all he said was "Madden." So, take that with a grain of salt and good luck to anyone who actually wanted the thing.

Oh, and bravo Shrike!! :)

That one drop being Madden sounds about right... I just went through the 3 pages of 134 guides that were listed last night and the 133 that were showing today. When comparing the two lists, their was something missing from the 2nd page that I overlooked and I am pretty sure it was Madden. I for one am not going to even bother driving 10 mins to GameStop to verify that though.

Also, thank you Shrike. It was a long time coming and he definitely deserved it... Especially after he didn't get the hint after his previous silencing at the beginning of the month.

:applause::applause::applause: Thank you, Shrike. One down, another untold plethora to go.

By the way, does anyone really care if I add or don't add Madden to the second post? I mean, a drop is a drop, but I doubt anyone on CAG will really run to GS to confirm that a sports guide dropped, right?

Knowing my luck, that'd be the one the clerks @ GS would allow me to grab, while they've denied me on every other prior drop as of late(including the SE/LE guides).

True. But what I just said was that....is anyone REALLY gonna go to GS just to confirm that a Madden guide dropped? I'm betting the answer to that is NO, unless something ELSE dropped that might make the trek worthwhile.

It just may take a while to make it to the post. Perhaps CAGs visiting a GS for something else will check it out. I understand your point tho'. I do believe it should be on the list if pennied, and if most GSs are like mine, there won't be any guides out to check soon.

I was in gamestop for a different reason today. I saw the Madden NFL 09 (non-LE) pulled from the rack and sitting in the dump pile where they always put pennied guides. I didn't bother trying to get one, but I'd say it's safe to say it did indeed penny out.

PS. Nothing else was in the pile.
Just checked my GS wish list and saw: "Currently Ninja Gaiden 2 Official Strategy Guide is not available for purchase and has been removed from your Wish List."

I was thinking about this, and it might actually be a good idea for us penny-guide hunters. Azeru caught the Ninja Gaiden 2 guide as it pennied, as it was in his wish list. What I've done is added all the guides that are still listed as "new" on gamestop.com to my wishlist. Hopefully, for future drops, they'll be taken off my wish list similar to Azeru's. While I might have to check it everyday until we figure out a more precise way, at least it's a start.

Many thanks Azeru. I hope your statement unwittingly opens up the floodgates for the rest of us. :applause:
