Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.
 It's the FTF/SBD coupon thing all over again. All of the people crying over how they're 'not able to get to the store' and how those who did 'zomg hoarded'.

You want a deal, you MAKE time.
Let's not lump all complaints into one pot. FTF was a whole different animal. I was one of the people who got up and out to the stores the minute they opened, and I saw plenty of FTF. So I "made time".

But unlike folks with no restraint (you fit into this category), I didn't nix the deal for others by walking out of each store with 20 free copies of the game. I only bought a copy or two if I had a filler item to go with them, so as not to draw attention to them.

Some of these glitches don't seem to generate an automatic system error. So they only get noticed when a cashier rings up a half dozen free games for one person and mentions it to a manager. When that manager looks into it, and then calls his district manager, the deal gets nixed in hours instead of days.

Different scenario.

Any time I've bought free guides, I pick up a few at most (Gamestop handing me 8 one day was the exception). So no cashiers yell for their managers, like in your scenario. If you hadn't been regularly picking up stacks of these, I wonder if a manger (and corporate) would have even noticed....? :applause:
If you hadn't been regularly picking up stacks of these, I wonder if a manger (and corporate) would have even noticed....? :applause:
The manger may not have noticed but the manager may have...:bouncy:

Well today I was finally able to snag a few penny guides. It has been over a year since I have found any - the last one I purchased was Dark Sector.

I guess I should add that I'm grateful to folks like IATCG for posting info about these. But it's a Catch-22 when you help others find the deal...but you also contribute to killing the deals quickly by absolutely raping them.

Let's be honest. We all agree the nimrod who posted a Youtube video about penny guides made a mistake by drawing attention to the deal, right?

So it's at least as bad, if not worse, to grab a huge stack of free games/guides right in front of a manager and draw attention to the deal, right? Makes sense.

Half the time Manager's could careless. I have had cashier call them and more then half the time they couldn't be bothered to walk over and usually tell the cashier to let me have them or the just don't even answer the cashier and the line grows longer so the cashier lets it go..

The cashier who checked me out told her manager who was sitting right across from her that Halo Wars rang up as 1 penny, she laughed and I paid my penny. :bouncy:

I guess buying something else would have worked, but when I was in there business was slow and there wasn't many customers. Only one young cashier to choose from, and immediately when she rang up just one guide, she's like "this is the wrong price."

After scanning the rest she calls the department managers, some of who say let it go and some who say don't sell it. At this point, someone goes to get the store manager who denies the sale. Funny thing is, the "operations manager" I talked to (a real by the book guy) has sought a superior before, so either he's been promoted or he was in charge at the time because his superior went home or something.

I got FTF from this BB, but only because it was a busy day and the line was stacking up so they let it go. When it was empty as when I there for the penny guides, it was another story.

Visited another BB, and they pulled all the guides before I got there. I guess I just haven't been lucky.
As for me, I listen to the radio in the car or at home, so I don't need any CD's. I only go to see very sporadic movies and most of the ones I have seen within the past 3-5 years I thought sucked ass and I would never want to own a home version.
IATCG, I think you truly are the biggest Cheap Ass on this board! And that's coming from a self-proclaimed one myself (my friends would say probably the biggest one they know). I'm always looking for a deal, or a way to save a buck, but damn! I have to at least have CD's & movies!! :D

Have you ever seen Coupon Mom on YouTube? I just discovered it last week, and went through and watched all the episodes. It's cool because she does a lot of similar deals like I do, but to the extreme. She'll go into a grocery store, or a CVS, get like $150 worth of stuff, then double stack all kind of coupons (both store and manufacturer) and promo deals, and walk out with everything for like $5!

I just picture it as something you'd be into....if, not check it out.
Half the time Manager's could careless.
True. But they're not the half we should be worried about. ;)

What I'd love to hear is someone from inside Best Buy explaining how this stuff gets reported. For example, if I get 2 copies of FTF for free, does some report show up on someone's desk somewhere, highlighting that as an error? Meaning that ultimately (or sooner, if it flags automatically) someone is going to see that and kill these deals when enough stack up?

OR...do these things basically fly under the radar until a front-line cashier or manager calls attention to it? Meaning that the system happily ignores penny guides and $0.00 game sales as long as the proper coupons or overrides are entered. And corporate only finds out about it when someone grabs 6, 12, 20 items from the same store, with no filler as a distraction, making the cashier question management about it?

I deal with the computers for a large company (almost as big as Best Buy), but which isn't in consumer retail. So I can only guess. But if it's like our system, the latter is more likely. There are so many little promos and deals going on, a person probably has to take the time and LOOK for stuff like this. And most can't be bothered. At least until smaller area managers start calling it in due to weird sales at their stores.

If we knew a definitive answer to that, we could put a lot of these "you bought too many!" arguments permanently to rest. This would be great info to have.

You will NEVER put the argument to rest. There are too many "It's fraud!" or "I was wanting to pick one up for free, but when I went six days later, someone had already gotten the one copy my store had for free! Stupid hoarders!" CAGs out there. Then there's the GTSers (Grab Them Shitz) and the "I'm in CAG just to yell at people who want bargains. Everyone should buy everything at full price for the health of our retail stores!" people... Everyone is out for their own self interest.

I'm like IATCG. I just put the guides on the counter and let it ring. Honestly, all the girls know me when I come in now. I NEVER get manager checked or anything. It's like the old Office Depot 55% pricematch guarantee days. If I'm coming in, they know there's a bargain to be had.

The only time I've ever come remotely close to getting turned down was when the guy came over to see what I was doing during the BsG1 sale... and that glitch continued for days past when I was in... I just walked out the door without completing the last transaction.

Same. Earlier in the week, I took about a dozen guides up to the counter at the one store where they hadn't pulled 'em. The clerk was like "What will you do with all of these?" I told her that I'd keep some, I'd trade some to friends, and any left over would probably end up on eBay. "Bottom line," I said, "you sell these for a penny, I'm buying." She nodded affirmatively and handed me the receipt.

Never had any trouble getting guides at Best Buy. I've gotten denied at GameStop, but not BBY.

As for the larger "hoarders/cheap bastards/FRAUD/grab dem shits!" narrative that infects every major thread in the forum, my thing is this: there's no right or wrong way to get deals. You can get 1 or get 100. I don't think one person getting a hundred free copies of a shitty game for free is any more or less harmful to a hundred people getting one free copy of a shitty game each. Same goes for guides and any other product. What I've found after a year spent checking CAG a couple of times per week is that sometiems I'll make out like a goddamn bandit, and sometimes I'll spend weeks without finding a nice bargain. So when opportunity knocks... I'm answering the damn door.

I've never been denied at a bestbuy ever. I've had the manager called in once or twice and they tell them to sell it at the price marked.

Take it from a long time penny guide buyer - periodically Best Buy corporate sends down a memo instructing their staff to be more alert, pull guides ahead of time, yadda yadda yadda. Best buy staff doesn't care. They do the bare minimum to meet the requirements - Hence why they pull ONLY the guides on the list leaving all the old penny guide drops. After a month or so Corporate sends out a new edict and they promptly ignore pulling guides to comply with the new request.

So relax everyone. In 1-2 months it will be all back to normal again. EXACT same situation happened last year, and the year before.

I love CAG. I scored at another BB instead of my regular one and got

Prototype
TMNT Smash Up
Brutal Legend
NGS2
Far Cry 2
SW clone wars
Ratchet and Clank
Champions Online
Halo Wars
GTA Chinatown
Prince of Persia
Tekken 6
Call of duty Reflex

Although I only wanted Smash and Dissidia guides...

Considering the fact that I price matched a penny guide(God Of War 2)from Best Buy to Circuit City about 3 or so years ago, I'd have to say I'm right in line with Coupon Mom.;)

And yes, they DID allow the price match, using only a receipt from Best Buy from 10 minutes earlier that clearly showed the guide as 1 cent. No ad, no website price match. I was even shocked they allowed it.

And zippon, that FTF coupon was good for more than 3/4's of the day before it seemed to get stopped, so you're not telling me that sometime within that day(a Sunday no less I believe)people couldn't crawl their ass out of bed and go grab a few to take advantage.

Went to bb and go metroid trilogy guide silent hill coming and a cheat code book.

My bb knows about these. Cashier himself said he got the mua2 guide then another clerk came by and said he got the prototype guide. At least they weren't douches and hoarded them. I think I can expect to find guides next drop. God bless them.

My wife and I went to BestBuy but they were all out of all the guides, spreading the other guides around the empty spots where they used to be. Oh well, BestBuy won this match here. Yeah FTF was going on most of the day, I grabbed 5 copies and my grrl grabbed 3. There were still more for other CAGS, same with SBD. Peace n thanx Cheapest

Not the point.

I'm wondering if the deal would have lasted longer if folks didn't rape it bold-facedly. If it isn't a system-generated alert (and I don't think it is), then it depends on managers and cashiers noticing really weird sales and calling it in to corporate for an emergency, chain-wide fix. A game or two probably wouldn't cause a stir. But stacks of them do. THAT'S the point.

In other words, if a handful of CAGs hadn't picked up 20+ games, alerting management and shutting it down mid-day, perhaps the whole CAG community could have benifitted from hundreds of additional deals as the coupon lasted longer. Seems highly likely.

But the FTF coupon was only good for that ONE DAY(Sunday), so it lasted more than 3/4's of that day. The Sudoku coupon lasted for quite a while(about a week). Yet you still had people cry about how there was 'nothing left' when they finally dragged their lazy asses to find one copy....on the last day the coupon was for.

Well, no shit Sherlock. You had a coupon which was available for use for a while, yet you took THAT long to decide to go grab a copy(or three).

These deals are always YMMV and first come first served, yet you ALWAYS get the whiners complaining about 'zomg hoarders'.

Hell. I've been offering up copies of the Sudoku game for the cost of shipping or so($4) and every single person who was 'interested' dropped off the face of the earth once I mentioned I wanted $4 for shipping.

I suppose they expected me to have the magic postage fairy pay for the cost of shipping them a copy and I'm supposed to just give it to them for free with no shipping?

Zippon - it doesn't matter. It's not like this is the first time greedy people ruin it for everyone else, whether it's free games or other stuff. There will always be people that are just out for themselves and fuck everyone else if they can't get it.

Your posting about restraint, while understandable, won't change a thing. The people who justify getting 20+copies for whatever reason, are always gonna justify their own actions.

You just have to get your copy, feel good about it and move on. And if you can't get your copy because someone else picked up 20, then shrug and consider it not your day. People don't change, especially the really pathetic ones.

The FTF coupon was only good for like 2-3 hours in the west coast.

Anyway this stuff should move to the discussion topic

Why did a thread about penny guides turn into an ethics lesson and discussion about best buy coupons? Did I get any copies of Fairytale Fights or Sudoku? No. Do I give a shit? No. Move on people. Dwelling on the past for too long is unhealthy.

Back on topic (somewhat):

I FINALLY got lucky today and got some guides. And not just from this drop, but ones from drops back (Mario Kart, Metroid Trilogy, CoD WaW, etc.). It was totally worth the numbness in my arms now.

Because apparently, even if you mention grabbing more than one of each guide(or game) you're an evil hoarder. Besides which, this thread(and many deal threads) end up wayyyy off topic. I've given up on keeping it on topic and I should just have a mod close the discussion thread down, since it's rarely used anyway.

That's because WalMart likes making money versus Circuit City(RIP) and Best Buy(coupons taking $20 off of $19.99 games, penny guides, B2G1 glitch). They didn't get to be the #1 retailer in the US by giving shit away.;) Proof positive of that is their abysmal attempts at 'clearance'.

That Columbia Heights store is wonderful... I forgot to check the Endwar bundle when I was there a few weeks ago, though, dammit. I would have liked a PS3 one. Picked up 2 360 bundles here, but there were no PS3 bundles within 60 miles...

I hit a gold mine in Iowa City today. I picked up GTA IV, WWE SvR 2010, and Far Cry 2 but they had like shit ton of GTA IV guides there. They also had a few Warhammer Online guides and a GTA: Chinatown Wars. Not much variety but definitely good for anyone wanting a GTA IV guide.

I love Wally World's attempts at clearance, where twenty cents off of MSRP is considered 'clearance'.:roll: Mind you, as of late they've been getting better and my local WM stores have whole giant clearance sections with tons of stuff for actual decent markdowns from original price.

I forgot to take the penny guide list w/ me the last time I went to BB. I'll be close to a BB sunday morning helping a friend move, so I'll be sure to have it handy then.

Yeah, if it weren't for the lengthy Metro ride to there, plus the upcoming rate hike, I'd have my new favorite store.

Oh yeah, I bought my first pennied code books for the first time in the three years I've been buying pennied guides today.
I forgot to take the penny guide list w/ me the last time I went to BB. I'll be close to a BB sunday morning helping a friend move, so I'll be sure to have it handy then.
Sickest part about this drop was that I had most of the list memorized, though the week prior to the actual drop I took the list in with me and had stuff price checked like crazy.

I think the employees were kinda shocked when I knew what pennied before they did, like always. That's the funniest part, going into a store and taking up a bunch of guides and they all somehow come up .01.

WHY THE fuck DOES THE STUPID PMED A PENNY GUIDE STORY HAVE TO COME UP AGAIN AND AGAIN.

STFU ABOUT IT ALREADY!

AND JOEMARTINEZ CAN GO EAT A DICK TOO

ok i feel better now
