Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

The Assassins Creed 2 CE guides are definitely ringing up at a $0.01 at Gamestop. I went in to get one today. They had pulled them from the shelf and the cashier went to the back to get one. After it rung up at a penny, the guy tells me that he cannot sell it to me for that amount and gives me some line about them having "issues" with their promotions and that their computers have been acting strange all day...yeah right...he then entered a few keystrokes and my penny total was replaced with full price. Asses...

Not a penny, but I noticed that GameCrazy has some old guides for roughly half off.

Here are couple I noticed (there were old standard editions on the rack too):

Metal Gear Solid 4 Hardcover - $14.99 or $17.99 (can't remember exactly)
Super Mario Galaxy Hardcover - $14.99
Assassin's Creed 1 Bundle w/ Art Book - $17.99
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass Hardcover - $14.99

Might be YMMV.
I'll wait till I get home this evening to see if anyone checked anything else for a potential drop before adding just ONE guide to the second post. And Merchie, skim the posts above yours to find out(aka read the thread).
IATCG, also add Forza 3 and SW Republic Heroes to the list.

Confirmed both Assassin's Creed 2 CE and SW: The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes.

I hit a dozen stores today (I've been wanting the AC2 CE guide for some time). Every one was the same: 1-3 managers and several employees, all unloading huge boxes of promotional materials and scads of FF13 and GoW3 strategy guides. Seriously, every store had stacks of FF guides (on the spindle, on the counter, piled up behind the counter, yeesh). The managers nixed every attempt to buy a penny guide. And none had the AC2 CE. I even asked at a couple of stores that know me, and they said they destroyed them last night or early this AM.

Just one store had one battered copy, and no manager in sight. I got it, and I was grateful as hell. They are definitely being tight with these around here.

Nope. I posted on this awhile back. This is store-wide.

You could always try the good old 'dumpster dive' if all else fails.... i've never done it before lol, just saying...

I wasn't above dumpster diving in my college days, but that was a long time ago. ;) Plus, most of these places have locked dumpsters or use those compacting dumpsters. No way to get at the guidey-goodness. LOL

I'm curious to see how everyone else makes out. I hope others get lucky as well.

I think it hurt that the regular edition is still for sale. In the past, an employee might take pity on me because I wanted a guide and it was disappearing. But now the only reason to get it is to avoid buying the softcover sitting right in front of you.

so total count is five guides at GameStop (?)

Rachet & Clank
Magna Carta 2
Assasins Creed 2 LE
Forza 3
SW RH - Clone Wars

forgot to go during lunch, will check out 'ol faithful later tonight..if I don't forget again

BESTBUY or GAMESTOP ?

I'm not sure if this is related...but thought it was interesting.

I was at a GS, and saw Final Fantasy XI for the PC. It was marked a penny, but was just the box. The manager told me that there were two instances where games actually pennied. The first being a Nancy Drew game for the PC, and then FF XI for the PC.

Thanks all -

Scored a Assassins Creed CE, Forza andSW: Republic Heroes.

The managered scanned them, said they were supposed to be destroyed and at first dropped them behind the counter so I figred I was out of luck.

He then told me since they were on the shelves I could have them for free and started ripping one of his guys who apparently didn't do the job he was told to do and take them off the floor - He was way cool to me though!

Actually, the American McGee PC game Bad Day LA also pennied a looooong while ago. How do I know? I scored at least 3 copies of it for nothing.;)

 :roll:Lazy ass is lazy? READ THE fuckIN' THREAD!!!

EDIT: Currently re- editing second and third posts with drops.

I think it's safe to say that anything that dropped at Best Buy during this past drop is due to drop anytime now at GS if it hasn't already. That includes the Episodes From Liberty City 360 version, among others.

I got the best PC game pennied. Etch a Sketch! At least my kids could use it.

Also MW Reflex guide dropped.

grabbed Ratchet, GTA$, Magna Carta 2 and FF Dissidia! I couldn't have found a nicer GS :D when I pulled the four pennies out of my pocket, the guy was grabbing pennies off the keyboard, and he insisted b/c he didn't want them on there! thanks guys!!
Also confirming today @ GS:

Didiidia Final Fantasy
Grand Theft Auto IV (did this already drop?)
Harvest Moon DS Sunshine Island
Sunshine Island rang up full price for me
Man, so I went to Gamestop and tried to grab Dissidia, MC2 and R&C and they all rang up as $19.99. WTF?!
Did the pad say it or did the employee say it rang up for that?

Very cool. I like stores like that. I thought I was in for a similar experience at the very first store I stopped at. Several older pennied guides had been pulled by a helpful employee and placed on top of the spindle. That's kind of a universal sign around here. But even though I only grabbed one, a manager nearly leaped over the employee at the register to cancel the transaction.
Did the pad say it or did the employee say it rang up for that?
Yeah, a savvy employee can override the penny price fairly quickly. One slick mo-fo tried that today, acting as if it rang up for that price originally. :booty:

And honestly, it's just 150 pages of how to carefully crumple and throw away the game itself.

My connection had a box ready for me after work.

Picked up:

Call of Duty Modern Warfare (Wii)
Harvest Moon: Animal Parade x2
Magna Carta 2 x2
Forza Motorsport 3 (keeping)
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time x3 (keeping 1)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes x3
Dissidia Final Fantasy

Not too bad.

I watched him scan the guides and they rang up as $19.99 each.

quick question about gamestop guides...

does it matter if the scan the original upc on the back of the guide or does both it and the GS upc on the front come up the penny price?
Sunshine Island rang up full price for me
thats funny beacuse I too had the same experience...at one GS I got it for a penny, another GS it rang up full price, so who knows?

Tried to pick up Crack in Time and Dissidia, both rang up full price. I didn't see the price display, but the guy is reasonably cool. He's usually straight with me about that. Oh well.

Picked up Magna and Ass Cream 2. I know of one place that has all of the guides but i'm trying to be slick and get them now and then.

This is why I usually wait for confirmation from several people before putting stuff on the second or third post. I guess if more people are having some of these guides ring up full price I'll have to take them off.

Gamestop today:

Me: Can you confirm a price on this Dissidia & Ratchet and Clank: Crack in Time guide?

Clerk: They're 19.99. It says it *right in front* of you on the cover.

Me: I'd heard they were "on sale" could you double check?

Clerk: It says they're 19.99! (and then gets interrupted by the manager)

Manager: Just scan 'em. (Price comes up .01 for each)

Clerk: Holy Shit???!!!

Manager to Clerk: Oh - those were supposed to be destroyed - just give them to him.

Manager to Me: Nice find man!

Two cool encounters in 3 days - it's like I won the non-douchy Gamestop manager lottery this week!!!

And next week you'll go to pick up a pre-order or buy a game and every time you do they'll be gutted and scratched up beyond belief.LOL You watch. Good luck like that never lasts.;):booty:

So I assume since I even saw Sunshine Island on the shelf at the GS where they normally let me slide with penny guides, we can safely say it's NOT pennied and I can remove it?

EDIT: Second and third posts have been re-edited. Harvest Moon: Sunshine Island has been removed from both.

Ok guys im new to this. I read in this thread not to just go in and ask about pennied guides, if they have any, etc. So how exactly do I get them? Sorry if this has been answered and I didnt understand it. I am interested in a few of the guides listed in the OP, but how exactly do I buy them for a penny? Are they on the shelf or do I have to ask for them? Do they actually have "1 cent" on the price tag? If not, how do I get it for a penny?

EDIT: I read the first, 2nd, and 3rd posts.

#-oREAD THE FIRST POST!!!!

Easiest way to go and try for guides is to either jot down or remember some of the guides you want from the list in POST 2 and then go into the corresponding store and bring them up to the counter. Preface the transaction with 'I heard these might be on clearance'.

Oh and good luck on getting guides that have been listed as pennied for 2-3 months already, since those ones are usually long gone.

And very rarely do they have a penny sticker on them....VERY RARELY. But if you see them on the shelf still, bring them up and do like I said above.

If they say they're full price, you can try to argue, but unless you see it come up a penny and see them hit a couple buttons to price override, you're pretty much SOL.
