Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Useful Information(and links):

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

LOL, well too bad they aren't those mini Brady guides..maybe 3-4 of those could fit under the seat of a motorcycle..but something tells me if you can score, you won't mind :D

So can I go buy a bunch of random guides hoping they penny and then return/rebuy on Monday?
So can I go buy a bunch of random guides hoping they penny and then return/rebuy on Monday?
Nope, they don't let you pull that off.

If you want them, you have to hit the store once they penny.

figures they finally do a drop now that ill be going to my corrections officer academy for 8 weeks LAMO!!! oh well if anyone gets any extra rpg guides i have a huge backstock of rpg guides i can trade.

Thanks Shrike, I know that. Just messing around. Don't feel like workin' today and this is great news...I am with token, can't wait. :bouncy:

Man there better be some sweet sweet guides if it's going to be worth it at bb... going for penny guides there is painful. All cashiers make it their personal mission to pry open my soul, then they summon their managers to land the fatal strike. Somewhere in the distance, a wolf crys at the moon.
we didn't force stores to price them at a penny. Their decision, and we just take advantage.
So how does that change my statement?

God, I hate people.

Edit: fuck yeah, BB penny guides. Thanks for the list lox. I have my strategy all planned out already.

So you have a strategy guide for that, don't you?

I almost spit out my Gatorade all over the laptop when I read this.:bouncy:

WOW! I know a store that has 20 DAO LE's!!

lox, any sign of a rogue pull? you gotta let us know!

I'm super excited about this. I hope some of you CAGs are generous if you get a handful of LE guides and not jack the price/trade way up...I know I will do my best and help anyone however I can. I'm building up for massive hauls where possible :) Now the debate rages on inside me whether to spend $35 b/c BB is pretty much the last place that has the DAO LE guide or wait..arghh!

Aw...I hope you can grab all of them and share the wealth through trades.
the sku for DAO CE is 9539519
I think there is some trick to check in store stock.

A couple of SKUs:

9539519 Dragon Age Origins: CE
9539573 Fallout 3 GOTY: CE

A grayed out guide doesn't necessarily mean the store doesn't have it, just that there is less than three (I think at least)
I'll post the full list by 10 tonight, but for a little sneak peek, Fallout 3 GOTY LE and Dragon Age LE are on there.
I think my closest BB store has one of each left, though the other local store doesn't have any of either that I can recall seeing last night when I stopped by.

FYI: Neither are able to be traded into Amazon's trade program either, so if I decide to 'grab all dem shitz' next Monday and I get a bunch I'll have nothing to go by for actual value.
I think everyone in this thread just soiled themselves if the above mentioned LE's are part of the drop.
Glad to see you're excited! ;)

that's what I was getting at..if you look on AZ for DAO LE they seem to go relatively high. But I know us CAGs will get hundreds of these. I mean, to each their own, but if people want $30+ for them and I don't get one, I'll be a sad panda. When this guide hit a penny at GS, I think only 4 people had it for trade and everyone wanted it, hardly anyone was able to get it at a store level, I was denied twice! I'd offer $10-$15 for that gem, after all, in this case we all know how much you got if for

it'll be interesting to see the build-up, this will be the most off topic this thread has ever been, but this is EPIC so I'm all for it. 5 days in advance? Awesome!

LOL You know how long I've had the hardcover guides on my own trade list? A loooooooong time for most of them. Why? Because I only wanted specific guides and I kept getting offered stuff that was super common for them that I didn't even have listed.:bomb:

It's one thing to grab a ton of LE/SE/CE guides, but another to get rid of them for something GOOD.

ive got a ton of good rpg guides all brand new id trade for a collectors da guide. my best buys are all long cleaned out on those.

Without further adieu, here is the list for this coming Monday's drop:
9101857 Animal Crossing: City Folk
9715307 Army Of Two: The 40th Day
9681679 Cheat Code Overload Winter 2010
9696392 Codes & Cheats Winter 2010
9696365 Darksiders
9539519 Dragon Age: Origins LE
9539573 Fallout 3 Game Of The Year LE
9695417 Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers
9539653 Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
9632208 Left 4 Dead 2
9388548 Madden NFL 10
9510861 Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
9539467 Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers Of Sky
9667276 The Saboteur
9510889 Scribblenauts
9078384 World Of Warcraft: Wrath Of The Lich King
9432312 World Of Warcraft: Wrath Of The Lich King Atlas

Hopefully this should give you plenty of time to stash what you want for the coming drop. Just be careful, as the workers also have advance notice of the drop.

Hope you have fun, be thankful that this for the most part killed the Amazon discussion, and, as the great Oscar Wilde once said, GRAB 'DEM SHITS!

P.S. I have jury duty Monday morning and may be unable to go out, so if anyone finds some spare Fallout 3, Dragon Age, and/or Kingdom Hearts guides for trade, let me know.

No Star Wars: The Force Unleashed? What is up with that guide that it won't drop lol. Not that I really want it that bad, it's just there are at least 2-3 DOZEN at my local Best Buy. Taking up a lot of space, heh.

shit fuck, of course I've had nothing going on on Mondays for the past few months, and now this Monday there's a drop and I've got my PhD qual exam the whole first part of the day, and then am gonna be tied up in the lab the latter half. Hopefully my BB will have some scraps at whatever time I manage to get out of the city :(

EDIT: HUGE THANKS TO LOX THOUGH!!!

Damn...I might have to switch my days off work for this. LOL

Not that I'd be likely to switch days off...sucks that I have to be to work @ 10 am and work until 6:30...however I can hit up the BB close by work on my lunch break @ least.
So how often do you guys get an employee at the register refuse to sell them for a penny?
I've not gotten denied by employees yet, knock on wood, only managers at a certain BB. The funny thing is that I went to purchase several things in the past few months at that BB, and each time a manager showed up while I was trying to check out...
So how often do you guys get an employee at the register refuse to sell them for a penny?
Granted I've only bought a few guides here & there, but I've never been denied. Although I've gotten some funny looks when they were rang up a penny.

I'll probably only be going after Darksiders, The Saboteur and the WOW Lich King Atlas.

Funny thing about the WOW Atlas is that I put it behind a stack of the game during the last drop, since I thought it might've been one of the ones to drop then.

But just judging by what I saw at the other local BB yesterday, they had NONE of those guides in stock save for ONE KH 358.

Oh well. It's not like I'm in desperate need of the three guides I mentioned either and since a fellow CAG hit up the Sears that had a couple Fallout 3 GOTY's in stock(after I told him they had them#-o)and grabbed those I have no need for the GOTY guides except for trade bait.
So how often do you guys get an employee at the register refuse to sell them for a penny?
At my local two BB stores I'd say the percentage is right in the middle at 50/50, but at the one further off store that I hit hard during the one drop last year it's more like 100/0 with me ALWAYS being told they have to re-ring any guides I find for the fuckin' cover price.

Although at the further local BB if the one lady manager is working that day it's around 80-90% that I'm gonna be denied.

Then again, there hasn't been much that's pennied out that I really need or want(or could resell;))and usually when there is it's only one copy of a LE/SE/CE one and it's in ratty shape after sitting there for 6 months and having people thumbing through it.

Maybe this is innapropriate to ask due to lurkers, but wasn't there a BB link floating around that showed inventory even if it was not showing up in the normal search? Kinda like the Target one?

Man, I haven't seen a single Dar siders guide, and found only 1 Army of Two: 40th Day tonight. I did manage to get Prince of Persia, Champions Online, Far Cry 2 and Warhammer Online: Age of Rec oning, though.

I've never seen the FO3 LE guide at BB, so I'm shooting for Dragon Age CE on Monday AM.

I think I'm going the El Stasho route for a FO3 GOTY sunday evening just because I want one for myself. I'll take my chances with the rest.

There's one BB close by that doesn't get nearly as much business (from what I've seen) in comparison to the other location in town. Probably because it's kinda hidden. Last time I was there they had quite a few copies of the FO3 LE guide.

Thanks for the heads-up lox!! I already own the Dragon Age LE guide (bought at full price from Gamestop) and the Fallout 3 GOTY LE guide (Gamestop again), but a few for the tradelist wouldn't hurt!
So this is gonna be at Best Buy starting 10PM Monday?

Is it Online as well?
The only time I have ever seen this online is last October or November, but that got shut down after two days or so.

Lox, just out of curiosity, how do you know a drop is occurring on Monday? You've usually just done speculating up until now. I know Vahn was able to get advance notice of drops because he worked at a BB.
