Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XII(Stock locator trick FAQ added to OP)

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Useful Information(and links):

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

To expand on this, if you come off as DEMANDING, then you'll likely be barred from the store and possibly banned from ALL of their stores entirely. Moreover, you may be charged with trespassing if you continue to press this, as retail stores are PRIVATE PROPERTY.

The penny price is NOT an actual price that the stores HAVE to sell the merchandise for, it is a 'marker' in their system to the employees to pull/destroy those items. The fact that we as CAG's get ANY of these means that employees are not doing their jobs correctly and we are very lucky to even get them in the first place.

So don't press your luck and ruin it for everyone by being an asshole to a manager/cashier who just wants to keep their job by doing what they're supposed to.

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price or 3) There are multiple versions of the guide and the one you grabbed is a newer version that has NOT pennied as of yet. Some examples of this are: The Godfather and Oblivion.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Best Buy Stock Locator FAQ to find stock for deleted SKU's(works for games and guides):

Here's a good little trick that some of you may already know. If you want to find out if your local Best Buy has stock of an item, but the page(and SKU) for it has been deleted you can STILL find/create a stock locator page for it.

Here's how to do it:

Google the item you're looking for the SKU for. Once you find it, take that SKU and copy/paste it into the URL for another item's stock locator page on BestBuy.com after where it says skuID=(example: blahblahblahblahskuID=2085453), then hit enter to reload the page with the new SKU in place of the old one and search away.:D

Unfortunately no such method exists for Gamestop at this time.

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

PLEASE USE THE THREAD TOOLS DROP DOWN MENU TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE NEW THREAD, RATHER THAN WASTING A POST TO POST 'TAGGED'. THANKS!!
With all of these stories of dumpster diving successs I'm tempted to hit up the few GS stores around here with dumpsters out in the open.:D
I'm with you on this. I drove around to the back of my mall yesterday to scope out the prospective dumpsters. They're locked though. This afternoon I'll be investigating a second option. It's the ACB and DR2 CE's that are convincing me to sink to this level. lol
I think the only reason I got away with getting a Dead Rising 2 CE guide today was because the Mass Effect 2 guide did not ring up as a penny, it rang up full price so that info may be wrong. Anyways they told me they couldn't sell it to me and I told them I would pass on the $20 ME2 guide too then which changed their mind on letting me have it for a penny.
Was it the new ME2 guide? They came out with a new edition for the PS3/DLC.

The info isn't wrong, there are 2 Mass Effect 2 guides. The original one, and the new one that has the DLC. The one that pennied is the one without the DLC.

i went dumpter diving but all i found was a box of shit....i mean seriously a box that someone had but shit it, it was so nasty and gross and smelled like i'd been in there for months!!

Liar.

I made a dumpster diving effort. Well, technically I looked inside the two should high dumpsters behind one of my Gamestops. The first had some garbage (not much) and the other had a few bags with shredded paper and about 50 dry cleaning hangers. At least I don't have to regret not trying.
Are you guys actually rifling through garbage for guides? :whistle2:&
I'm gonna make my first attempt in a while. But chances are if there's too much crap in the dumpster I'm not gonna dig around in there.

But if I see a bunch of game cases and shit that may prompt me to dig a lil deeper.;) Most of the guides at my local GS stores were shrinkwrapped anyway, so chances are they've survived the tossing into the dumpster and sitting there for a day or four.:booty:

And there's more dumpster diving CAG's out there than ya think.;) Just saying...

This was my first ever dumpster diving effort. I was very careful to slowly open the lid because I had no idea what might jump out at me (e.g. bugs, rodents, homeless people, Tom Cruise, etc.). There was basically only a floor covering of garbage so that would have been no issue. However, as IATCG indicated, if there were a ton of garbage I would not have investigated too thoroughly.
Be careful who you trade with...;)
seriously. If you picked a guide out of the garbage, you need to indicate that in your trade list.

nasty.

More likely than one would think.

Checked two today, no luck. Going to look at one more tomorrow. Would love to pick up ME2 and ACB since I just bought the games a week ago.

Not to judge anyone, but hearing these dumpster diving stories makes me wary that some of the guides I traded/bought from here, may have originated there.
It gives me a vomit inducing feeling :whistle2:& & seriously I agree that anyone providing such guides shall mention it while trading/selling

That really should be a new cag rule. If you wanna dumpster dive for yourself, that's great. But I'd rather get a used guide than a dumpster guide.
Yeah, when I pulled some out of the dumpster yesterday, I only grabbed the sealed ones...
I dared to go check some Gamestop dumpsters to see if they had any sealed ones and had no luck. I went to the one place where an employee told me they were going to destroy them. At that moment I thought, b.s.

I checked the nearby dumpster, and lo and behold, there they were: ACB C.E., SC:C, L4D2, and others ripped and wet. That made me sad :whistle2:(

Ah well. I hope all of us who missed out on these will be able to find them at BB later

I just got back from my first dumpster diving experience. I found a bunch of guides, though half of what I was finding was torn apart and destroyed(true to the words of the employees who work at that store).

But the other half of the guides were NOT destroyed and actually were sitting pretty close to the top of the heaps of Gamestop 'goodness'.:) I left behind like 2-3 Splinter Cell Conviction and some other shit I already have from BB's drop a while ago. No sign of ANY LE/CE/SE ones though.

I will only say that I found 4 copies of the Crayola software package thing or so I thought I found four copies of it. But one was destroyed, with the package having been opened and only the postcard(assuming it's a registration card) inside the package was left in there. But the other three were sealed(opened em when I got home to verify the discs were in there and still sealed themselves).

All totaled I got around 10-11 guides from one dumpster. The other dumpster was twice the size of that one and a mish mash of Subway/Men's Wearhouse/T Mobile/Famous Footwear and Gamestop's shit, with GS' stuff being wayyyyy far down in the 4-5 foot high dumpster.

I asked a Police man earlier outside of WalMart what the legal status was about dumpster diving and he stated that as long as there isnt a sign that says private property all they can do is tell you to leave lol. So I went to the gamestop next door but didnt find any guides :( but did find a VERY nice chandelier with a MSRP of $479.99 only thing wrong with it is that it needs a new power cable .

:D awesome

Went out of town to check to different GameStops, the employees actually tried to give me some, but they both said that their managers just put them in the back and said that employees that wanted them could take them and they all ended up getting gone.

I also dumpster dived in one, but it literally had nothing except some GS receipt paper.

I am going to have to agree with this, not so much because I care about people dumpster diving, but because I just don't care about all of this. This is the Reduced Price Game Guides thread, not the "random shit I found in the dumpster" thread, or even the "shit I did to try to get free guides" thread. And IATCG, I can't believe you have participated in this off topic conversation. You are usually the one constantly berating people for being OT.http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8120352#post8120352

My one buddy found a flat screen tv back when they first started coming out with LCD n plasma ones in the open dumpster behind a Circuit City store about a year before the whole chain liquidated.

It was marked 'field destroy-display' or some such shit. All that was wrong with it was it needed a stand, a power cord and a remote. It was a huge tv too, like a 42" one.

Because I've been completely perma banned from all GS stores apparently, so I either resort to dd for my guides from there or I wait for BB to drop them and hope like hell that the managers are not in a cockblocking mood that Monday morning. It seems like it's a 50/50 chance anymore from BB too, which is why when there's a drop there I grab the hardcovers and anything else I might want first. Then I go back in for trade fodder.

Either way the ones I found were mostly all sealed and the ones that weren't I will tell people about where I got them if they ask. If they don't I don't think there's a way in hell you could know. Besides which, they came from a dumpster loaded up with other cardboard shit and no sign of Chinese food or any sort of gunk.

I was happy when I passed up the Zelda Spirit Tracks CE guide at GameStop during their 50% off sale and then found a brand new one on Amazon for $5 shipped.

And now it's gotten pennied out at GameStop. My luck. Oh well.

This may be what we've always been. And are now simply blossoming into fully. Dumpster diving chandelier restorers. And somehow I'm OK with it...

Ah, what a productive, awesome day this was:

AC:B CE (x2--one for me, one for my cousin)
DR2 CE
FFXIII CE
SMG2 CE

I never get tired of the surprised looks on employees' faces when they scan the guides (it's also great fun to feign surprise at the penny price), and more often than not they're impressed instead of angry at such deals. :D

I haven't posted in this thread yet, but I have been following it for years; IATCG, thanks so much for the continual updating. :applause:

I would never buy a guide that someone found in a dumpster. I hope people don't try and sell them without saying something about it because "used" is not the truth. Cheap is one thing, but trash is another.

If it's shrink wrapped it is. Just wash it off with a wet towel... after all, don't forget to bring a towel!

You're quite welcome. I do try and keep up with the information that comes in.

Speaking of which, I believe I'm going to make one of the added 'comment' posts(aka the READ THE FIRST, SECOND N THIRD POSTS ones) into a reduced/pennied item post. I'll go through and try to sift out all of the non guide stuff from the second n third posts and put it in that post.

BTW, if anyone wants to start posting SKU's for those who want employees to search for dropped guides/items by, please do so. I've been thinking of updating the thread with a SKU list as well.;)
anything that's been in a dumpster certainly isn't "NEW".
That's the whole of the GS chain though, especially their newsed games. I still find it humorous that not only do they get away with such a practice but that so many people have no problem with it.

1 out of 100 games I buy is used/newsed so i don't really care. I just think it's not right to sell/trade something as new when it's been in a dumpster.

So i took everybody's advice and hit another dumpter in a bad part of town after the local gamestop there had closed for the evening. They had one of those giant sized ones that that had two huge doors and you had to climb into. As i creaked the doors open in the very front i saw a box of game guides that was intact (covers were still there, amazing) but just as i was about to grab the loot a bum was sleeping in the back and jump up and said this was his home and said i better be there to leave more treasures for him. I asked if it was okay if i grabbed that box of pristine guides and he said that it was too new to give up and he had planned on using them for butt wipe. He then started talking about the war he was in and go really crazy mad sounding so i had to go along like i was interested in what he had to say. After a few hours of acting like he was my new buddy and that i had to go buy some McDonalds for him i asked if i could just have the Collector Edition guides and he finally caved in and said yes. But to make sure i was gonna return i had to give him my driver's license but that can easily be replaced. Scored at gamestop finally after 5 years of trying and many many dumpster dives!

Had a very lucky day. Hit up 4 Gamestops, 2 of which practically threw the guides at me. If you notice the Mass Effect 2 guides are acctually the new ones. The manager at one Gamestop told me to get whatever penny guides I wanted of the shelf and at the time I didnt realize there were 2 versions of the guide. When I went to pay he didnt even look at the guides and said have a good day. I plan to take them back tomorrow though. Dont want to get him in trouble and burn a bridge at the same time.

Wow, you are one lucky guy. That's an amazing overhaul :applause: I agree with you taking those back. I'm pretty sure he'll appreciate that.

Wow, this current drop has brought out more dumpster diving? I guess the "new low" that people sink to keeps dropping as time goes on.

Whatever works for people, I guess they can rationalize on their own.

I would kill for one of those Dead Rising 2 CE's, even though I have the vanilla edition from using up my PUR points for a free guide $19.99 and under.

Here's to hoping that Best Buy follows suit and drops some shit today or next Monday and that the managers aren't in a foul mood and block me.

It looks like you got one of the vanilla DR2 guides as well at the bottom of that 2-3 stack of the CE version. Did that drop too?
