Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XII(Stock locator trick FAQ added to OP)

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Useful Information(and links):

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

To expand on this, if you come off as DEMANDING, then you'll likely be barred from the store and possibly banned from ALL of their stores entirely. Moreover, you may be charged with trespassing if you continue to press this, as retail stores are PRIVATE PROPERTY.

The penny price is NOT an actual price that the stores HAVE to sell the merchandise for, it is a 'marker' in their system to the employees to pull/destroy those items. The fact that we as CAG's get ANY of these means that employees are not doing their jobs correctly and we are very lucky to even get them in the first place.

So don't press your luck and ruin it for everyone by being an asshole to a manager/cashier who just wants to keep their job by doing what they're supposed to.

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price or 3) There are multiple versions of the guide and the one you grabbed is a newer version that has NOT pennied as of yet. Some examples of this are: The Godfather and Oblivion.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Best Buy Stock Locator FAQ to find stock for deleted SKU's(works for games and guides):

Here's a good little trick that some of you may already know. If you want to find out if your local Best Buy has stock of an item, but the page(and SKU) for it has been deleted you can STILL find/create a stock locator page for it.

Here's how to do it:

Google the item you're looking for the SKU for. Once you find it, take that SKU and copy/paste it into the URL for another item's stock locator page on BestBuy.com after where it says skuID=(example: blahblahblahblahskuID=2085453), then hit enter to reload the page with the new SKU in place of the old one and search away.:D

Unfortunately no such method exists for Gamestop at this time.

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

PLEASE USE THE THREAD TOOLS DROP DOWN MENU TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE NEW THREAD, RATHER THAN WASTING A POST TO POST 'TAGGED'. THANKS!!

Yes. Every guide they have pennied over the last week or so.

I'm keeping an eye on BB.com in the event they let a few slip onto the website IF they do a drop today.
Is the regular soft cover Assassins Creed Botherhood also pennied?
No it is not, either is the Dead Rising 2 which was asked earlier.

I managed to find a gamestop pretty good with knowing penny guides said all they had left were some legend of zelda spirit tracks guides in the back though, they did offer me one but I told them I didn't need it. Besides that no new luck today for me.

Monday is the 31st, don't drops happen the first monday of the month at BB? So next week is when you should be clicking refresh every 5 minutes.

I understand people's reservations about dumpster diving, but let's give your fellow CAGs some credit. I doubt anyone is going to pick up a soiled guide and try to trade/sell it.

For example, the guides I grabbed were sitting on clean cardboard (the huge flat pieces the promotional posters come in) and weren't touching anything else (sides, lid, etc). And there was no other garbage on top of them. If you want to call them inferior, then you might as well toss any guide that's sat within a few feet of a garbage can, or sat on the floor. The level of contamination was the same.

Out of curiosity I did return to that dumpster today, and someone had added several wet bags of garbage on top. I could still see all those lovely guides, but they were now trashed. :whistle2:(

Offer up some of those guides for the cost of shipping or free and see how many PM's you have within 10 minutes. There's always a bunch of self righteous hypocrites in every bunch.

To me, as long as they were shrinkwrapped or not sitting in the bottom of a Subway loaded up dumpster with yesterday's sweet onion chicken teriyaki, then what's the problem with them having been dumpster dived?:booty:
:bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb:

I would kill for one of those Dead Rising 2 CE's, even though I have the vanilla edition from using up my PUR points for a free guide $19.99 and under.

Here's to hoping that Best Buy follows suit and drops some shit today or next Monday and that the managers aren't in a foul mood and block me.

It looks like you got one of the vanilla DR2 guides as well at the bottom of that 2-3 stack of the CE version. Did that drop too?
The Brotherhood and DR2 plain guides didn't drop. Those were mine that I'm debating whether to keep or trade since I have CE's for those now. Sad part is I haven't even opened those guides yet before getting the CE. I need to spend more time playing my games than collecting stuff to play them :D.

Thats the way the ones I found were. Setting right on top of dry boxes with out a puddle of water in site. Got them out and picked up the box that they were setting on and under it was the smaller ncaa, the sims and lunar guides in a pile of water. Took the clean dry sealed ones and left the wet ones for the trash man on monday. I say the 10 sec rule it in effect...or would that be the 10hr rule.......:whistle2:k

Make it the 10day rule just to be safe.

I would like to see a poll of the guys here if there was a $100....no a $50......no a $20 bill in a dumpster or trash can with in reach, dry and clean if they would leave it because it was in said dumpster or trash can.....

If not for me getting that free guide coupon from my PUR points and taking part in the 50% off sale to get the Fallout New Vegas CE I would've likely just waited for a drop for both. Then again I used credit to pay the $18 for the FO: NV CE so in reality it cost me like $4.50(worth of HDMI cables:razz:).

Damn does dumpster diving pay off sometimes. I had also picked up a bag with 3 Sony brand Dualshock 2 controllers in it at a different GS, and I just tested them and they all work perfectly!

I understand shrink wrapped stuff, but any of the other guides I would be hesitant about. The big issue where I live is that all the garbage areas are locked and we have really wet weather. That and I'm a short girl... I'd probably get stuck in the dumpster.

I love how you can call other people self righteous hypocrites without knowing a single thing.

You want dumpster guides: Fine. But don't pass those off as new in the trade thread. There is NO WAY I would ever take a guide from a dumpster even if it was offered for me. I just don't need a guide that badly. So yeah, if the guy was to offer up free guides on here, I would not be one to jump into line.

And I suspect other people with a strong aversion to dumpsters wouldn't either.

So go take that hypocrite bullshit out of here.
Here's some SKU's for the last 2 drops at Bestbuy for the OP.
Thanks for the list. I combined the two lists together and added it to the SKU list on the first page.:D I was originally going to integrate the SKU's right into the second post, but that'll wait till the next reboot since I don't wanna implement it half assed and have some guides with SKU's listed and some without.

So from here on out, besides RED font for stuff that dropped I'd kindly ask for SKU #'s as well if at all possible.

It's snowy here for the winter, so I'm glad that the guides were not only shrinkwrapped but also down a bit in the dumpster(but still on cardboard). I'm just pissed at myself now though, since I checked the right hand side of the dumpster but I didn't check the left hand side. All that was really in there(unlike the second one I checked, which had tons of Subway garbage in it)was cardboard and paper.

man, love the GS drop report trend how its always spread out over a few days. Would have loved to get in on the Dead Rising 2 copies, but didn't see it until now! So, down about 6 days, gonna go to my usual hookup to see if anything is left..

token i have a dead rising two guide with no covers if you want it. i missed the only guides i really wanted lunar and mario galaxy 2. i got a dragon age awakening with no cover but itll do for a read copy. if anyone wants i did get a new fallout 3 goty so the coverless one is up for dibs for guides i need.

wait, you're expecting good conditioned guides for ones that had their covers removed?

I guess i'm going to have to do an independent sniff test when i get your guides :)

I picked up DR2 CE a month or so back during that half price sale. No regrets here. Half price guide > dumpster diving any day of the week. ;)

to visc and others if you read my original post i said id trade many of the guides for 1 like 3-5 for one guide. i dont see how that isnt fair with just the covers being torn off. im not asking for 1 for 1 trades. seriously how is that unfair. someone is getting several guides they want for 1. giving them more to have as barter etc...

If I were to get a job at best buy would I be able to get these guides before they sent them back or whatever? Could I just ring them up myself at the register for .01?
I guess i'm going to have to do an independent sniff test when i get your guides :)
Well I have had a few indepent studies done. 4 dogs cant tell the defference between the new ones I bought and the ones I got Saturday. It also passed the cat test as well and I had found one of the cats a few years ago as a kitten under the dumpster and he cant tell the difference! But I went ahead and did the all important wife test and they passed. So after 2 days of indepent studies with 6 of the 7 best noses in the house pickey collectors cant tell the difference! :bouncy:..........Plus the 3 that you are getting were setting out side the dumpster on the back side. It was like someone put them there for me. They must have knew I was coming :oops::oops:

Gamestop guy gave me a Dead Rising 2 CE guide today for free with purchase of the game. Still sealed and marked with .01 on the sticker.
did you put it up to her face to smell and then tell your wife they came out of the dumpster? did she slap you?
Nope she help me get it out of there, was her idea infact. And if you dont like to hear about it I suggest you stop reading the posts and shut your mouth about my wife.

woah seriously? I didn't even say anything bad about your wife.

calm down there tough guy.

hahahahaha. talk about over the top reactions. Do you do this at bars too or only on the interwebs.

I can understand how some (like Confoosious) are just skeeved out by the idea of dumpster diving but as one of the other CAGs said yesterday, I think you have to realize that people are using a bit of judgment. I mean if a box is sitting on top of a bag of shredded receipts without any water and without touching the wall of the dumpster, how awful is it? I get that you're grossed out by it Confoosious, I really do, but have any of you germ-free guys questioned how clean the tractor trailer or other delivery truck was that shipped these things from their publisher?

Kidding, kidding. I guess people dont watch movies with the guy that gets upset when someone says "your wife". Gee....

Anyway lets not let this turn into a "over the top reaction" thread . Like there havent been any of those posted in the last few days or hours ;).

But I cant help but to agree with Cheapestgamer about "self righteous hypocrites in every bunch", there also a something else in every group too. And im sure over the years of trades going on here that 30% of the guides flooting around have come out of a dumpster. I use to be a MGR at a Gamestop and I know how guys in other store would return "defective" items, penny out guides or pc games or trash there defective stuff and go through it all outside and put what they want in the dumpster ontop of all the trash and then come around and take it after there shift was over. Then take it to a local used book store and sell it for cash and store credit. The DM in the area found out about it and put a stop to it. Thats why it is hard around here to get penny guides still in the store. I know every MGR in 30 miles of here and they wont let employees have them or hand them out because they have been told they will get fired for it. I cant blam them. But I know there are people in this area that got through dumpsters here daily to get this stuff to sell at flea markets, craig list and used book stores. So if you dont like people who get guides out of the dumpster, we know know. Let it go, if you have a used guide in your house you never know where it came from. Its a chance you take.

I have seen more dirty boxes come off UPS trucks then in some dumpsters. I guess you could go as far as saying that a guides on the shelf can be germy because that kid with the sticky hands touched it or that stack of guides on the counter had been fingered by people who havent washed there hands after going to the bath room or been sneezed on buy the 2 sick guys that have been working there all day . I guess you could say that about anything you buy :shock::shock:

I'll put it like this:

When I go into a restaurant, I know the plates and knives could be dirty. But I also i know am reducing the chances by eating at a place with a passing inspection certificate and looks fairly clean. Whereas I know if I am eating out of a dumpster, no matter how clean it looks, I'm eating out of a dumpster. I know the waiter coulda pissed in my soup. But I'm reducing my chances depending on where I eat.

If I eat at a nice restaurant and get sick: shame on them. If I eat at a dive with roaches scurrying around and get sick: shame on me.

Could I be getting a sealed guide (or game or whatever) with invisible shit and spooge all over the shrinkwrap it from Amazon? Sure. But I'm reducing my chances by buying them new from Amazon. instead of used from Gamestop or ebay.

Like I said, personal preference, you guys can dumpster dive all you want. But I wouldn't trade for a guide (or even accept a free one) if I knew they were hanging out in a dumpster. I'm sure this is NEVER going to happen but "truth in advertising" or "common courtesy" would dictate you tell someone if the source of their guide was a dumpster and let them decide whether that level of contagion is acceptable.

I can't believe i have to defend myself against NOT wanting a guide that's been in a dumpster. Dear lord. Sometimes I feel like Larry David.

Whoa, I'm definitely liking the newly-added stock locator trick. However, the item I'm looking for is the guide for Star Ocean: The Last Hope International, and I can't find its SKU anywhere through Google. Does anyone have any ideas or just flat-out know the SKU for that guide?

Well Im going to end my talking about this with a old saying my Momma use to say, "To each his own......said the women how kissed the cow" ;)

God dammit. All this talk on Monday and not a BB guide drop in sight. WTF?

I am going to add a column to my guide trade list for DG (dirty guide) that way you all know if I may have jacked to the women in it or grabbed it from a dumpster or something :)

yeah, make sure you specify which ones you jacked it to while in the dumpster. Those are worth more or less depending on your viewpoint.

Man. This sucks. I should've 'reserved' a copy of the DR 2 and SMG 2 CE guides at the one GS that I don't think knows I'm completely perma-banned as of yet when they had the links for them up still.

Now it's a crapshoot if they even still have them, as the stock locator said they did as early as this morning.:bomb:

Oh well. I still have the non CE one I got for free from GS for cashing in my PUR points(and I now have another 1700+ points I'm apparently fucked and can't use since I can't go in store to use the stupid coupon(s) for them).

Otherwise I'd likely ask if they could give me that play guarantee whatever on the $22.50 copy of Black Ops the website sent me.
God dammit. All this talk on Monday and not a BB guide drop in sight. WTF?

I am going to add a column to my guide trade list for DG (dirty guide) that way you all know if I may have jacked to the women in it or grabbed it from a dumpster or something :)
 I'm just mixing up the guides n hoping no one notices. Either that or if I ship em a guide that smells like Febreeze that may be a clue as to whether or not it was previously next to a big glob of Moo Goo Gai Pan(or sweet onion chicken teriyaki;)).

I kid, I kid. The Animal Crossing: City Folk, Left 4 Dead 2, Sims 3: Ambitions and Pokemon Platinum ones are my rescued guides, for you squeamish mf'ers:razz:

Eh. I gave up long ago on keeping the discussion in here to a minimum. As long as people still post new shit that's dropped in RED then we're golden.

If I were to get a job at best buy would I be able to get these guides before they threw them out or sent them back? Could I just like ring them up on the cash register? lol

You'd get fired for ringing yourself out.

If one of the other cashiers did you would be fine but they always get shady with me when I do it. Do not use your employee number at all or they will track it. My store pulls them at 7am so I take what I want out of the back at 930am when I get there and by them quickly.

Still could probably get in trouble so weigh the risks.

Penny guide or job?

Is that really the deciding factor of your job search?

Went to one Gamestop and the guy at the register overrode the price to $20 msrp for the guide... I promptly passed. Went to another GS but saw the head employee that denied me before; I chatted with the other guy who was actually British and pretty cool (but new to the job). Didn't feel like pressing my luck, maybe the new guy will stay there for a while :)

Any word on a drop for next Monday, Frosty?;) I figure I'll ask before someone else does.

And personally, the chance of getting first crack at guides(which I'd have a friend pick up FOR me;)) and the usually sucky BB clearance in my area were my two deciding factors for applying there last fall.:booty:
