Why'd you kill your Duke anyway? Curious to see how it works, or was it screwing up?
Funny story, really.
My duke's joystick constantly scrolls up but the XBox Live portion works. My S controller has a faulty wiring thing (I carried it in a bckpack and it was positioned in a bad way or something). And my Pelican controller works great, but the XBox Live communicator does not work in it.
I started out with the S controller, only to find out that it's a wiring problem in the cord and i'm more or less SOL.
I then went on to the duke but the joystick was fine.. it still scrolls up.
I then went on to the pelican. Let me state that the XBox controllers made by Microsoft were easy to crack open and fool around with and put back together. I had literally no trouble at all. I got to the pelican, opened it, and literally every button fell out. That's right, in the pelicans, the buttons are just sitting there.. so i'm grabbing the buttons and putting the sensor thingy back in and whatnot.. I tried to transplant the XBox Live memory card/Live portion of the controller to the pelican, but they were pretty different. The white and black buttons came off the top of the pelican (while they're nice at the top, it's a double set and you don't need them). So I more or less said screw it and left the wires hanging out at the top. If anything, it'll be cool for San Andreas. The white button on the top was faulty, anyways.

It was a pain to take apart, the holes in the back to get to the screws are longer and much, much smaller than that of the Microsoft commercials. I broke a wire connecting the motherboard (I guess that's what it is?) to the rumble thing in the controller, but that's not a big deal, they never worked anyway. Why'd I buy it? I got it for like.. five bucks. I can still play games with it.
So now i'm going to fool around with the circuit board on the Duke. If I can't fix the joystick problem, i'm going to go the lazy route and leave it deassembled. I'll be talking on XBox Live with the circuit board in my lap. It's actually really cool though.. the buttons aren't even needed, it's almost like a touch pad with the buttons pulled off.
Cliff notes: I'm being my cheap ass self and trying to get a working controller with fuctional xbox ports using what I have. I don't want to spend another $30 for a controller.
