Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:
>>guitar advice, initial posts #26, 34, 35

This should help get you started.

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

Got my Distortion pedal:bouncy:
7B2197AC-156A-4943-AB85-9F9AD41C8865-10464-000021F0E96F50CB-1.jpg
My invoice even says it's suppose to be a Distortion pedal:lol:

No sweat. Plan to keep it unless it's borked

Got the same issue on one of my orders. Ordered a overdrive and distortion and got an overdrive and fuzz. Like you I wanted the fuzz anyways. They had it on sdotd and I already ordered a fuzz. Ordered another distortion for a friend that one came through fine.

Now the issue is what to do with $400 in gift certificates I am going to get from all these price matches.

Im thinking either that $800 4x12 cab they have for $250 and one of those schecters they have for $300. That or just a good discount on a really nice guitar.

Almost forgot to post this guitar deal. About 10 hours left to bid:

SX Callisto jr with hard shell case up on ebay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SX-Solid-Bo...0358194156?pt=Guitar&hash=item5d37353bec#shId
If bidding doesn't go wacko, you'll be able to snag a nice p90 equipped les paul copy, including case, for a little over 100.

Amazon has the Schecter c-1 standard for $288
http://www.amazon.com/Schecter-Stan...al-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1355388234&sr=1-37

Oh and my local Bestbuy had the cherry sunburst Epi LPjr marked down to $91. Little bit of a discount from the BF deals

Got my 2 Overdrive pedals yesterday. My Distortion should be here tomorrow. They called me to warn me about the possibility of a fuzz pedal, as well. I figure I'll see what I get. There's still time to get a price match on the distortion again, if necessary, so I'd keep the fuzz if that's what came. Nice pedal. Sturdy, and with a true bypass...

I wish I had bit on the Delay pedal when MF had it in stock. It seems that it was a fairly nice delay pedal - especially at $30...

New DLC announced for next week to end out the 3 straight weeks of DLC... First song of the (3???) pack is Foo Fighters "Times Like These". This should be an all Foo pack...

Just saw a Guitarcenter commercial for a Weekend sale in-store.
They're gonna have a couple Epiphones for $89 each. Didn't recognize the acoustic model but the Electric model should be the Les Paul Special 1 (dual p90s, satin finish, bolt-on neck)
I'd be all over it if I wasn't gunnin' for another Gibby blowout

BTW, did any CAG win the Ebay guitar? Looks like things got a little nutz

Hope it is a FOO 3-pack:bouncy: or they at least mix in some more Nirvana (keep it in the family;))

Wow, really? Have a link by any chance? Just bought the Epiphone Les Paul Junior for $89 on BF. Would definitely upgrade to the Special for $89.

The gift certificate situation is a bit messed up. They say they are only good untill the 22nd and only on regular prices and only one at a time. In reality you can use them on sale and price matches and they are good untill January 31st.

I used a $25 on a price match for a akai distortion pedal. So I paid $24 out of pocket and they will send me another gift certificate for $65.

Also anyone who missed last years schecter deal here is another one. Not the same guitar but just as good a deal.

Schecter Solo Special Electric Guitar - See-Thru Cherry $247 - $500 at other places

www.amazon.com/Schecter-Solo-Specia...al-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1355469765&sr=1-42

Really tempted myself but I am really liking the feel of my new prs. If just the nut was cut right and the finish was a bit nicer. Might send this one back in hopes of getting a better one. I am a bit soured on guitars I am not happy with out of the box after what happened with my schecter.

Well, I only saw the commercial once. But just checked the website and they updated the front page with the deal. Fair warning, check out vids on p90s. Whole different pup when compared to humbuckers. You may or may not like'em
LP special 1 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-Les-Paul-Special-I-P90-Electric-Guitar-107274862-i2101226.gc
And guessing this is the Epi acoustic since it's 89 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-PR-150-Acoustic-Guitar-101832319-i1166292.gc
Dug around a bit more and saw they've got 18.5' instrument cables for $5 each. Good if you wanna extend the reach of the RS cable or if you need to plug into a amp
#1 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Musicia...5-foot-Instrument-Cable-100044584-i1128459.gc
#2 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Musician-s-Gear-Instrument-Cable-105766810-i1563828.gc
Look just like some livewire cables I got early in the year and those have held up great for me

And just for you lefties, they 've got the 70s Tribute Firebird (vintage sunburst only)for $499:hot:. Not often that you see the lefty version cheaper than the righty model
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gibson-...-Handed-Electric-Guitar-107915233-i2510381.gc

Or go to Musicians Friend for the same Firebird deal. But if you prefer, MF also has the lefty model 60s tribute Les Paul for $599
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guit...tudio-60s-tribute-left-handed-electric-guitar

These last deals are pricey but still a deal, relative the model. MF has the the Les Paul double cutaway (white) for $1200
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-les-paul-double-cutaway-electric-guitar
or the goldtop p90 version for the same $1200
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-les-paul-double-cutaway-p-90-electric-guitar
EDIT: Amazon has a few different pick packs for dirt cheap. May be ugly but can't complain too much at 6-10 cents per pick. Try to PM for a better deal

It's funny. Was thinking that about the warehouse sale from last year and wondering if they would repeat it. Guess they decided to use Amazon to clear out excess inventory:lol:. A bunch of models inched lower today... even the Shaun Morgan

Always wanted that Shaun Morgan model... But now that I've been finding "cheap" Fenders, I don't want it anymore. :) Made one of my co-workers drool yesterday over my new American Telecaster. Man, that's a pretty guitar.

Should get my Akai Distortion pedal today. If it's the fuzz, I'll see if I can use my custom quote again to grab a distortion. Those are some REALLY nicely made pedals. I need some cheap 6" patch cables. Eventually, I'll get a powered pedalboard, probably.

How does this compare to the one from last year?

Which fender model do you like the most?
Which fender model do you like the most?
Have a MIJ Jaguar, American Tele, American Strat and Mexican Tele. I like country, so I love my Teles, but I like PLAYING the Strat the most. It's quite a bit lighter. The "feel" is very similar to the Tele, neck wise, etc., but it's more comfortable for longer stretches. To be fair, I've only had the Jag for a week or two and only played it once in game, so I can't say how it fits in yet.

Is it the deluxe american strat? Do you mind posting a link to amazon?
Is it the deluxe american strat?
No. It's a Highway 1 American Strat. I bought it in like 2004 from Guitar Center during one of the huge sales they used to have. I think it's a 2002 model, if memory serves correctly.
How does this compare to the one from last year?
Other than the single/double cut away the main difference is the pickups. Last year had emg 81/85 in it but had a goofy flame inlay. Also has a stoptail bridge instead of a string through.

This one has a humbucker in the bridge and p90 style in the neck. Along with two tone and volume controls. So as long as you are not only interested in metal this has a ton more versatility.

Basically its schecters take on a les paul rather than a stratocaster.

Hit up the local GC and the weekend sale is live. Grabbed some of the 5buck cables in silver/black. Even though the site says they're Musicians Gear brand, the actual label on'em says LiveWire. So they should have a lifetime warranty.

This store had a bunch of the Epi Specials: a cherry model on the display stand with about 20 boxes stacked next to it.
How does this compare to the one from last year?
Well, here's one that's pretty close to last year's deal/model.
Schecter Damien Elite in black for 283.xx and it's marked to qualify for an extra 10% discount at checkout. So should be $255 total... unless they hit you for tax.

Really, the Damien Special was based off this one, with the neck and inlays being the big difference

Do you have an idea of what your looking for in a upgrade?

Just a better made guitar or something you wish your current guitar had. Shorter scale for easier bends and less of a need to stretch you fingers wide. Split coil to give your humbuckers a single coil like sound.

If you were disappointed in not getting the schecter last year and still want it.

Go here and hit the found a better price button

www.music123.com/guitars/schecter-guitar-research-damien-elite-electric-guitar

Give them this link and price

www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0033AHV88/ref=nosim/cheapassgam08-20

Do it a couple times as you might get shot down or not get the full 123% price match. The full discount will bring the price down to about $235.

Personally if I had the option I would take the black one without the goofy inlays any day of the week considering its more than $10 cheaper than most paid last year.

Its a great guitar a tiny bit heavy but the pickups are great for metal. Plus you will save your self some effort staying away from floating bridges.

Another thing to keep in mind if your into heavy metal and want to do drop tuning. It would be better to stick with a standard long scale like fender. That way when you put heavier gauge strings on it will help you keep your string tension up and keep you sound from getting muddy or warbaly.

Also if you think you want tremlo but don't want to deal with the tuning and string breakage issues you can block it. Which is when you put a strong block of wood like poplar in the spring cavity. This will prevent the bridge from moving back and essentially turn it into a hardtail. I haven't used my trem yet but can tell you my schecter is 10x easier to tune than my ibanez.

Lord of awesome

Yes that would mess it all up. The game assumes you are in standard tuning. It compares your notes to a pile of sound clips to try and get an idea of what you are playing. So while you could be playing the right notes on the frets. It won't sound like what the game is expecting to hear and will count it as a missed note.

This is the main reason they wont be able to realistically have different tunings beyond drop d as it would not be worth it to constantly retune between songs.

Another game called bandfuse is much more metal centric. Although it looks like they are having problems getting it off the ground so it may never come out.

Here is a good comparison video of different pickups. The sound gets distorted on the highs but it will give you a good idea what the difference is.

E-Z-B - both of these guitars are good options. Schecter makes a quality axe... And an Amrican Strat is something that you could unplug from rocksmith and walk right out on stage and have an instrument that was stage worthy. A lot of it comes down to your feel.

For example, last night, I finally got to play the Nickelback DLC. I went and got my ESP with the jumbo frets and EMG pups... I played through 2 songs and put it away and grabbed my Strat. The scale of the ESP just is not comfortable to me, so it'll likely live a life of little use while my Fenders are played regularly. Just an example of buying a guitar based on specs from a website instead of laying my hands on it, like I have for all of my Fenders. So my best advice is to run to a guitar center and find a comparable guitar to play a little. It may make a huge difference in the direction of your upgrade.

Wow, saw a couple of the Pawn Shop models at BB today. One was 506 and the other 586. Funny thing, I'm sure they weren't there last week. Which makes me wonder if they were in the stock room or if they were returned.

Personally dug the sea foam green model. Good price but I don't know... Feel like they shoulda been dropped further, especially for something that mighta been cranked on by every Himi Jendrix:roll:. Probably just ticked I missed the bigger fish

EZB, really comes down to what you like more. Either should be real nice. Maybe I got lucky with both my Schecters but I think they're great; moreso if you can get'em under300. And since you've been using a guitar for a while, you should have a decent idea of what you find comfortable. So try to find those models in-store, or at least something close. Not the same as living with a guitar for a while, but you should be able to tell if it's something you'll like

I had already messed with a Schecter PT a couple times before I grabbed it. At the time, I was checking it out because of the Pete Dee model, but couldn't find that one. So went with the next closest choice and researched the rest online.

There are subtle differences between models that can't be figured out from pics/vids alone. Stuff like fret spacing, string spacing, fretboard width and neck size.

Just ordered a Schecter Ultracure from Amazon as my xmas present this year. Never thought I would be able to afford one and now I just need to find a deal on Rocksmith. I've tried teaching myself on an acoustic and failed...also need an amp I suppose :)

Think there's something wrong my electric guitar, it's pretty old and cheap, but I took it out of my attic to mess around with Rocksmith. So far I'm having fun (once my fingers stop hurting), but I think some of my frets are "off". Googled around and looks it isn't "in tune with itself" and needs to be intonated. Can I just take the guitar to my local guitar shop and ask the guy there to restring it and intonate it? I'm assuming that's right phrase, don't want to make an arse out of myself.

Also, this isn't really Rocksmith related, but I'm looking to pick up a cheap/beginner acoustic guitar just to mess around with and searching this thread, I found this:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-PR-150-Acoustic-Guitar-101832319-i1166292.gc

Should I wait for a better deal or just grab that one? Or find a used one around here in the Boston/Allston area. Will probably want a case for it too.

Thanks again, this thread has been great.

Intonating is actually super easy its the second thing I learned after tuning. About the only thing you should be too much worried about adjusting is the truss rod in the neck. Because you can damage your neck if you turn it too much. You would only need to adjust that if you had back bow or wanted to reduce troublesome fret buzz.

There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to do it. Basically you will just need a tuner and a screwdriver.

Pluck an open sting then hold down the twelfth fret on that string. You want those two notes to match e a d g b e for standard tuning. The rocksmith tuner will be of no help in this area.

Move the saddle ( the last thing the string touches untill in meets the nut in the neck) on the bridge forward towards the neck to put the note sharp and away to make it flat. Each time you adjust the saddle retune the open sting before you check the twelfth fret again.

A safety not to anyone looking to do their first string change on a floating bridge guitar. When the manual tells you to loosen the strings at the tuners. Make sure you loosen the high e string first and not last. The last string you loosen will get all the tension of the floating bridge. It may break the string and cause it to come flying back at you.

Well I finally got the bronze for 50 million in scale runner. Haven't been able to play much lately. Mainly just practicing rifts outside the game when I had a spare few moments. It did help since when I came back to play I put most of my old high scores to shame.

One thing for sure this game really make you earn those bronze metals my fingers are hurting again.

Can anyone recommend me a pretty good amp from this following link? Got $45 in rewardzone certificates and I would like to save some money by purchasing it from Best Buy. I heard good things about the Line 6 Spider IV and the Fender Mustang I. I don't want to spend much over $50 (after the $45 deduction). Anyone have any suggestions? Most use it would get is playing in my house and taking it to a drummer friends house to jam. Thanks.

xFate - The Line6 or the Mustang will be a good little practice amp... The one that caught my eye (the little Bugera 15W tube combo) is out of stock online...

Saw the same at both "local" stores... I thought the $504 was still a little much. If it gets down to the Jaguar price that I got, I may bite. I like the blender knob instead of the 3 way or 5 way switch. That's really the last reminaing option for me... Other than the Fender Tube amp... and the M12 stompbox... and the... ugh. :whistle2:#

Know very little about what makes up a good acoustic. You want to get something made of solid wood pieces instead of plywood. But couldn't tell ya desired wood types or preferred guitar sizes

Go over to slickdeals and search for GUITAR. Look for deals by LinuxCrew. He usually does a good job of explaining what you're getting. Most of his deals have come from WMS, but that's because they bought out a ton of discontinued/Euro Washburn models at a big discount.

A bunch look good to me, but what do I know

Congrats man
And you could hold off on the amp purchase if you get RS, for a while anyway. It has a pretty good built-in amp modeler with a bunch of effects pedals. You gotta unlock those effects thru gameplay though

Cool.
Still go back to SR but not as often, because of the borked saves. My profile stopped saving SR scores since the last big patch.

Nowadays I'll just play thru each scale, back to back, and see how close I get to my high scores

ok I did a little experiment for intonation. I re did my schecter to make sure it was right. This wont work for all strings and may be specific to my guitar but here goes. This would be just for people that don't have a seperate tuner.

Go into guitar tuner and into precision mode.

So with this below the fiirst letter is the string you are plucking on the twelfth fret. The second is the string the game is trying to get you to tune and the number is how off the game says you are.

So E D +20 holding down the low e string at the twelfth fret and plucking it when tuning the d string ie the blue string is glowing and it should say you are sharp by 20

E D +20, E G -30
A G +20, A B -20
D B +30, D e -20
G e +31
B no matches
e no matches

Again sorry if the above is confusing but it was the only way I could think of to intonate with just rocksmith.

See if your store has the cube 30x (maybe it was xl I can't remember) for 88 on clearance first. Mustang is a good safe bet though otherwise.

In case anyone is up at 8am amazon.com time they are having a gold box deal on a damien special with floyd rose. So the same guitar as last year with a black paintjob and tremlo.

www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/ref=cs_top_nav_gb27

I just wish amazon would put a more complete description. They don't even put neck type scale or even the number of frets in a lot of their stuff.

Rocksmith is on sale at the UBIShop. It's $32.49 CDN and I think it's $19.99 at the American store. If anyone has some time would you be able to check and see if that's the price there too? I'm not sure if the version they have there is only for UPlay or if you get a Steam key. If someone tries that out can you post your results here too? I'm hoping it's a Steam key and someone here can be my Ameri-friend and snag one for me.

Oh. That's not as nice as $19. Maybe it was a limited time deal. Thanks for checking!

I think I'm just going to go to Costco and get the Rocksmith bundle. They have an XBox 360 version with the game and a guitar and I figure since I have to buy the cable and guitar I might as well get the package. I can then wait for the PC version to drop in price. I imagine the included guitar is good enough?

Finally convinced myself to buy a AKAI tri distortion pedal (even though I don't have an amp, lol) and now I can't find them on music123. All I see are the Fuzz and Overdrive. Guess that's what I get for waiting :(

Am I missing something? A $150 analog pedal for $19 seems amazing.

Nah. You just waited too long. They are really nice pedals... Hard to find an analog pedal for $19 shipped...

Rocksmith actually does show up at $19.49 for the PC download (no cable included) version, and $38.99 with cable, though I'm not sure whether that means the game is still a download or a physical disc. FWIW it seems the download only copy is now $29.99 MSRP.

I think I'm going to go with either the Fender Stratocaster, the Dean Vendetta XM or the Dean EVO XM. The Fender is available now but the two Dean guitars will take about 3-4 weeks to arrive. Based on that, and the fact that I've never played before, would it be worthwhile to wait for one of the Deans (which one?) or just go with the Fender?

Generally like old (Scorpions, Ozzy) and newer "rock" (Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Metallica) and just want to have fun trying to play those types of songs. Based on the YouTube reviews of the guitars I mentioned it seemed like the Fender had more of the sound I'm looking for but I didn't find any good Dean Vendetta/EVO reviews.

Last edited by a moderator:
It depends on the price difference of the fender and how sure you are about sticking with learning guitar. While you may feel like you outgrown that dean down the road. Its nice to have a cheaper guitar around that you wont have to worry so much about messing up. I got that dean xmt last year would have kept it but they didn't include the tremlo for some reason sent it back and I was on back order for months. So I bought a schecter instead.

You really can't go wrong with those guitars they are all great. Trem guitars can be a pain to tune as each string you tune detunes the rest untill you get them all right. So with the few drop d songs in rocksmith can be a pain. You can always change songs out in journey mode though.
