Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:
>>guitar advice, initial posts #26, 34, 35
>>guitar accessories, initial posts #49, 51, 56

This should help get you started.

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

You add it to cart once, and then mess with quantity. No problems adding 999 for me now.

There it is. I was trying to edit from the checkout process. Guess Amazon has a 6 item limit per order.

Been a while since there's been talk about Amps. I'm still trying to make a decision and want to know what you guys think about Mini-Amps. Anyone have experience with 'em?

I'm still heavily reliant on RS so the amp would be used mainly to practice riffs that come up during the song. You know, pausing the game, practicing, then jumping right back in. And kinda like the idea of having something small that won't get in the way. Plus, I most likely would use it with headphones.

In what I've researched the Honeytone and 57' mini twin keep coming up as the best choices. Anyone have experience with these or other Mini amps?

The Line 6 15watt is still on my radar, especially with GC's current sale. But think a mini would be more helpful at this point in my learnin'.

Appreciate any help you can provide

Rocksmith was $49.99 at gamestop a month before? Makes me sad that I got my $50 gamestop giftcard yesterday :(

Anyone think we'll see that soon again?

I am sure there will be a permanent universal price drop on this game very soon.
You can always try Guitar Rig and your PC instead of an amp. You just need asio4all and your rocksmith cable and you should be good to go.
Didn't know that you could use the cable to interface with a PC, that will be nice when my TonePort goes down. Thanks for the heads up on that one.

I'm trying to decide between the spider IV and Peavey Vypyr amps... i've watched some comparison vids on youtube and the Vypyr appears to sound better (At least to my virgin ears haha) but with the Spider you get more for your money... Anyone here have experience the two brand/models?

Instead of waiting, check to see if GS sells Kindle cards. If they do you can buy 50 bucks worth and apply it to your Amazon account. Then use that credit to buy RS for $60

Sweet! I got an amp but it doesn't have all the effects I would like. This could be pretty cool. Thanks for the heads up!

OP should add this to his post, pretty slick program if it works with the rocksmith cable.

Don't have the game yet, definitely will pick it up eventually, but does anyone know whether the free holiday DLC is a limited time offer or permanent? I let someone borrow my PS3 for the holidays and if it's limited I'm going to have to drive over to put it into my download history real soon.

I don't know if the PS3 is like the Xbox but we can just go to xbox.com and add it to the download queue. Maybe you can do the same?

I did have a chance to play one of the christmas songs. Pretty good rockish theme. I thought I was doing good with just 7 - 10 - 7 - 10 over and over. Then it was 7 - 10 - 9 repeated. Was like ok... still doing it. Then it went to 7 - 10 - 9 - 10 - 7 - 10 - 9 -10. Hand cramps like crazy!!!

Just bit and got the Damien. Saw the Starburst jump up to $600 and I figured this would jump up soon, too. Very psyched and very nervous I "wasted" a lot of money.
Has anyone gotten their Damien yet? I'd love to hear first impressions.
Well, someone finally posted a review on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Schecter-Dami...dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
Pretty positive. And agree about the inlay work. Don't hate it, but don't like that I'll only have the side markers for reference.

Now I just need Amazon to change my status from Shipping Soon

EDIT: just checked and my status changed to shipped and it should arrive in a couple of days. That's crazy fast for FSSS

Wow, that's a great review. I hadn't even thought about only having the side markers thanks to the inlay, though. But I think I still want that guitar. I have a beautiful Breedlove acoustic electric, but the only plain electric I have is the crappy RB3 Squier. I'd love this to tool around on when I'm not in an acoustic mood.

I'd appreciate it if you guys getting yours in the next few days post your impressions. I have all this fantasy football cash burning a hole in my pocket now :)

Edit: Screw it, I just bought it.

have $150 in Bestbuy gift cards - if i get to the store and convert to Amazon and the damien still this cheap, maybe ill buy it for a 2nd mess around guitar =]

Buy used final fantasy 13 with the b2g1 and flip them to bestbuy. Then will the resulting gift card, buy your kindle card. For $50 it'll take three trips and probably 3 different bestbuys to maximize your giftcard. Also the risk of being banned but you'll need to inquire in the bb trading thread for that answer. On the plus side you'll make profit at bb with tradein and a preorder for an extra 50% tiv.

Good to see Amazon holding the line on RS (and the Damien).

And I keep looking for more info on Amazon's Damien exclusive. There was a post on the official Schecter forum. But it's been removed. Hope it gets posted again. Would like to see their impressions on it

When I saw it, some posters mentioned that Schecter tends to do exclusive runs like this only no one's ever seen an Amazon exclusive before.

Also stumbled across posts on Harmony central. They learned about the Damien because of the slickdeals post. Which got its start from here. Some of those posters are suppose to get their guitar Wednesday as well. So that could be another source for more impressions

But hopefully the CAGs that get theirs today keep us informed

10s are standard. Unless you have a specific reason, just get 10s (where the set says 10-46, that's what I mean).

Was looking at these: http://www.amazon.com/Ernie-Ball-Re...6CVC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325098041&sr=8-1 but I'm not sure what size I should get. Any recommendations?
Should be good with those.

Dug up the early post on string recommendations if you want to look it over.
Then come strings. Have at least 1 -2 extra packs. Why? Because strings tend to break, usually at the most inopportune time, and for no apparent reason. Again, I've been using GHS Boomers 10, 11, and 12 gauges for over 15 years. They have a great tone and they are durable as hell...tough as nails. I usually break the strings on other peoples guitars...why? Maybe because they aren't using Boomers. ;)

But seriously...stick with 9 gauge string sets. They'll go easier on your fingers until you build up your callouses. After the hazing period, if 9's feel too loose and not manly enough and you're ready to shed some blood, go ahead and bump up to 10's. And for some serious lacerations...11's and 12's.

WARNING: All new guitars come pre-setup for 9 gauge strings. This means the truss rod in the neck, the bridge, saddles, and bridge springs (only for guitars with a tremolo bridge) are all setup and tweaked for 9 gauge string tension. You'd be OK putting on 10's...but anything higher will produce enough tension to warp the neck of your instrument. Do be stupid like I was 22 years ago and find out the hard way.

Here are some from Ernie Ball:

Nice, thanks for bumping that post for me. Good info there.

I wish that darn Damien would go back up to a normal price. It's hard to look at it and not buy it. I just don't see the point since I have my Pacifica.

Haha. I felt the same way up to few days ago, when I caved. Should get it tomorrow.
Alright thanks.

BTW, someone else posted another review on that Damien. 5 out of 5 again.
that would be my post on amazon and SD...

got it this morning!

Pulled the trigger on the Damien Special and the game as well.

My first guitar and a little more than I planned on spending, but I tend to push the limits of most beginner stuff pretty quick. It is a nice guitar according to you guys and unlike most of the opinions on the internetz you guys are pretty helpful. :D

Heck, I can just thank my Fantasy Football league for the $$$ this year and hopefully I can play something decent at the next draft. I get it on Friday...

Also wanted to say thanks to Smiley and everyone for their feedback in this thread. It has been a huge help in taking away a lot of the mystique around what a beginner should consider when getting into this hobby.

My wife wanted to learn how to play the guitar and figured this game was a good learning tool.

I didn't plan on picking up a guitar for a couple of months. Is the Schecter Damien a good guitar to learn on? And is the deal good enough to pick up now or should I wait?

I'd say the Damien is an awesome beginner's guitar because of the equipment put into the build. Pretty much a great price for what you'll get.

But I'd also say to look at the Dean Vendetta XMT. It was a recommendation made early on in the life of this thread. It's a very good guitar which can be had for as little as $80 (for the Satin Natural finish)thru Guitar Center's current coupon code offer.

Vendetta: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Dean-Vendetta-XMT-Electric-Guitar-with-Tremolo-105614051-i1452652.gc

Coupon: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Promos/ClaimDiscountCoupon.aspx?pid=4447

If there's any concern that the guitar'll become an expensive doorstop, then go with the Vendetta. Really comes down to how much you want to spend.

EDIT: I should also add that there's a chance your wife may find the guitar to be too heavy/uncomfortable. I only bring it up because my friend told me she found it to be heavy. She did some looking around and settled on an Epiphone SG Jr after she tried it out in-store. I didn't like the sound it made but it was definitely light and easy to use. And she still keeps up with RS play.

Man, I have five guitars already and I'm tempted to buy that Schecter just because of the price and winning $800 in fantasy football. Any other more seasoned players have any more impressions on it?
I wonder how many of these Damiens they have - #1 seller but still holding steady over 999 in stock.
If you go by the posts over at Harmony central, Amazon seems to have stock at their warehouses across the USA. Doesn't seem to matter where they're ordering from because everyone seems to be getting it within Two days, regardless if shipped FSSS or Prime. I did FSSS and am suppose to get it tomorrow (two days from order).

And I thought I was bad on guitar buying. Some of those guys are talking about ordering another one after playing the one they got:lol:.

Hmm, I just returned the Old Republic CE I ordered from Amazon ... and the Schecter is still in stock ... guess it's going to be a race to see if my amazon credit comes back before it goes out of stock or the price goes up ... I'll let fate decide

Haha, really getting a kick out of watching the guitar buying addiction starting to spread in here. You really got to be careful because those are expensive things to collect and it's hard to kick the habit. I've been "clean" for about three years now. When I hit three acoustics, three electrics, and a bass guitar, I had to make myself stop...well, except for my RB3 pro guitar...but..but that doesn't count right? Right? *twitch*. Just remember, the first step to solving your problem is admitting you have a problem. ;)

Amazon still holding @ $60 for RS. Beginning to think that they're using it as bait to sell those guitars. If you look at the "Customers also bought section" RS is listed right there.

One more Amazon review and still really positive.

Get outta here with that common sense:razz::lol:

EDIT: aw yeah. The Damien is two cities over at the UPS hub

I've been lurking long enough and thought this post would help others:

First off, as a guitar player, I am a relative newbie. I know a few chords, a couple of riffs, and that's about it.

My first guitar was the Dean Vendetta XMT from that starter pack:
http://www.amazon.com/Dean-Electric-Starter-Vendetta-Metallic/dp/B0025VLQY6

I got the Schecter Damien Special yesterday. Here are my thoughts:
- The Schecter Damien does work with Rocksmith without any issues
- The Schecter Damien Special is a lot heavier than the Dean Vendetta XMT
- From my novice standpoint, the Schecter Damien Special feels like a much better guitar than the Dean Vendetta XMT. However, I don't see myself buying a more expensive ($500+) guitar even though the Line 6 James Tyler Variax JTV-59 is really, really tempting
- I needed to get a strap (the guitar does not come with one) and ordered the Levy's Leathers 2" Cotton Guitar Strap. I am currently stealing the Dean's strap. Have never bought a strap before.
http://www.amazon.com/Levys-Leathers-Cotton-Guitar-Strap/dp/B000XPO0IU
- I also got a new guitar stand (World Tour XCG4 Folding Tripod Guitar Stand). That brand seems to have slightly better quality than a stand I got from Best Buy
http://www.amazon.com/World-Tour-Folding-Tripod-Guitar/dp/B000BUDO48

Some random thoughts:
- In general, more tuning seems required at the beginning as you are breaking in the strings
- It fees like I have to apply less pressure on the strings to play the Schecter Damien as opposed to the Dean Vendetta XMT
- I have small hands (with not much finger strength) and the Schecter Damien does not feel hard to play
- If you are on the fence, but know that you will keep trying to play the guitar for a while, then I highly recommend this. (I got the Dean to test the waters without investing too much money)

Amazon's kicked the price up again on the Damien. It's now $245.
Also have a couple more reviews @ 5 stars
