Zew- please give me a rundown of that concert... how was each act... did Mos & Kwe go together? What songs did De La do? I wish I could have been there.... Rock The Bells indeed.
The concert started at 11AM. Dirty Heads was up first, I believe they are some local band. Two white guys, one who plays a guitar. They were alright. They were on stage for about 15 minutes.
Then Zion I came on. I’m not too familiar with their work, but they can put on a show. They free styled most of their set, and ended with their song they do with Kweli (who did not come out for the set).
Up next were the Visionaries. I had seen them advertised on Myspace before, but had not heard any of their songs. They were kind of weak. I’m not a big fan of rap groups with more then 2 heads. At the end of their set they decided to cause some controversy by saying “
Raiders. We’re taking ‘em back to LA.” Being we were in the Bay these caused a lot of boos.
Planet Asia was after them. Being he is from Fresno (where I be), I’m a fan of his. He killed it with some other Fresno cats.
Del The Funkee Homosapien came out look crazy as
. He came out with a shirt wrapped around his head and some big ass white sunglasses. He did a good show, did one of my favorite songs,
If You Must.
Afterwards, Immortal Technique came out. He did one of the best sets out of anyone there. He jumped in the crowd and rapped while he performed The 4th Branch. Half of his show was revolutionary propaganda (my favorite kind) and he ended the show with Dance with the Devil. Ill.
De La Soul was up next. I truly can’t remember every song they did ( they played a lot), but they ended the show with Rock Co.Kane Flow. They did the 1st verse of the song 3 times, each time they stopped at MF DOOM’s part and froze for about a minute straight. I thought for sure DOOM was coming out (if he did I would have went bananas).
Murs 3:16 came out and warmed up the crowd before his group, Living Legends. Murs was really good. I’ve only heard a few of his songs, but the stuff he played at the show was entertaining. Then Living Legends came out and bored me to death. I feel asleep twice during their set.
Then Sway from MTV came out to host the rest of the show. He introduced Supernatural, who the night before had gotten into the Guinness book of world records the night before, by freestyling for 9 hours and 2 minutes straight. He said he was lucky enough to have his voice. Then he said he was going to show us an exercise/trick he does for freestyling. He asked everyone in the front row to hold something up from their pocket. He worked it into a 10 minute freestyle that was some of the sickest shit I’ve ever heard.
Redman came out did a bunch of his hits. Teased up with some of his songs he made with Method Man, which he said he’d perform during the Wu-Tang set later.
Up next was Kweli. This is where the show went from an 8 to a motha
ing 13.
He performed some of the usual stuff, Lonely People, Get ‘Em High, The Blast, Never Been in Love. Then he did Move Something, this got the crowd real hyped. Then about half way through the song he started freestyling over the beat, which introduced Dave Chappelle. I’ve never seen 60,000 go
ing nuts until then. This was clearly the loudest point of the whole show. He gave Dave the mic, which then Dave made a joke at Kweli’s expense and he dropped the mic on the ground and started cracking himself up rolling on the floor. Kweli picked up the mic, and said “How the hell am I suppose to top that?” He topped it by doing Get By. Crowd went nuts yet again. And right at the end of the song, Mos Def just jumped on stage out of nowhere. They got right into Supreme Supreme. Then Definition, Respiration and Astronomy (8th Light). Then Kweli let Mos do his own set. Mos started off with Ghetto Rock, The Rapeover. He had has his DJ play a lot of oldies, all of which rappers such as Kanye, and Jay-Z had sampled and himself. He sung over them and it was great. He played 3 songs of his new album that comes out in September, True Magic. Just from those 3 songs, it sounds like it’s going to be awesome. He did Ms. Fat Booty, crowd went nuts, half way through the song he started freestyling over Dear Summer then right back into where he left off in Ms. Fat Booty. He set was the longest out of anybodies in the whole show. Someone came out and told his DJ his time was up. Mos said, “Okay, well my times up. So, I’m gonna do one more song and then one more” He did Modern Marvel (my favorite song off of The New Danger) then Umi Says (my favorite song off of Black on Both Sides). He was amazing.
Wu-Tang was the last act. Did a bunch of shit, Ice Cream, C.R.E.A.M. Then M.E.T.H.O.D. Man, where Meth run all the way through the crowd. A very cool moment indeed. They brought out a bunch of the Clan’s sons who rapped their own song, pretty cool. Then they brought out Ol’ Dirty’s mother and played some of his songs. Afterwards they let Ghostface do some of his solo shit. Redman came back out and did Da Rockwilder with Meth. They ended the show with Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nothing to
Wit’. It was Ghost’s birthday so he let all the ladies know what tour bus he was going to be on and that he was staying at the Marriot. The show ended at about 9:30PM. It was a long, awesome day.
