RPG Thread IX is a steaming pile of pointless monologue. Just Youtube the ending!

Zell is pretty much a 100x worse of a character. Maybe less annoying, but that doesn't really have to factor into how good a character is. Tidus is probably one of the most well done characters in the franchise and we all know how he sounded.
Well, except for Collette yelling "Angel Wings" every five seconds.
That would be Tales of Symphonia, not SoA ;)

As for monk-style FF characters, I think that the best ones in the main series are from FFVII on back (Sabin, Tifa, etc.). Also, Tidus > Yuna (FFX version, anyway), though that's not saying much.
I thought Yuna was much better than Tidus. At least she was real...
I think Wakka was the worst character in FFX....

Bah, I liked Zell. My team was always Zell+Selphie.
He's certainly not the first Final Fantasy character to fight with his fists. Monks in Tactics are pretty much the same.
Well its looks stupid when the game has all this futuristic technology and you have him going around punching these psicom guys who have full body armor and riot helmets on.

Good call. The vino is kicking in and I'm not paying attention. SoA had Vyse and Aika. I played the games back to back and they blend into each other from time to time.

I would give it to the blue animal dude. I don't remember his name or really anything about him besides him having blue magic (he had blue magic right?). I at least remember stuff about Wakka, but that may just be because he got to knock up Lulu and she was my favorite character.

squall uses a freakin GUNBLADE

A GUN ATTACHED TO A SWORD

JEEZ HOW STUPID IS THAT

hahhaah

kimahri was the worst character of ff10. he was big, ugly, blue, and stupid.
squall uses a freakin GUNBLADE

And you press trigger, and it FIRES! Where does the bullet go? Why doesn't it run or of ammo? WHY DOES IT MATTER WHEN YOU PRESS TRIGGER? How does Yuri's boomerang come back? How do dragoons survive JUMP? How does a stuffed cat sitting on a stuffed moogle...

Nevermind =P

Hope you're being sarcastic :p Kimahri is one of the few blue mages in the FF series who is actually useful. Love his character design, too.

Yuna on the other hand... well, she wasn't quite down to Rinoa's level for me, but I couldn't tolerate her until FFX-2.

As for the best character in FFX, that would be Auron of course.

At least he was silent. Every time Wakka opened his mouth I wanted to punch him in the face.

I played Final Fantasy X right when it came out, but didn't get to X-2 until a few years later. When Kimahri first appeared in X-2 I had no idea who he was, didn't even remember that he existed much less was a member of the playable party. To me that pretty much says it all.

Yeah, he wasn't exactly a memorable character.

Hopefully if they put out a CE they'll put it out in the US as well as Europe so I don't have to import again..

i maintain that the gunblade is possibly the stupidest concept for a weapon, ever. it makes no sense. where does the gun end and the blade begin? when does the blade part ever carry an advantage over the gun? why don't they give him a gun instead? or maybe just a sword if they want to continue to use primitive weapons?

what's next, an abacus-computer?!

The idea behind a gunblade is that the gunshot (a blank, not a projectile bullet) makes the blade vibrate at a high frequency, which supposedly makes it do more damage. It's not unique to Final Fantasy either; there are "vibroblades" in Star Wars among other sci-fi and fantasy settings.

Nomura's reading this right now and thinking, "What a great idea!"

The dude in Versus has an engine on his sword. Everything about that game looks baller but it's hard to be hyped knowing it's probably 2 years away.

A sword can have the advantage many times. Close quarters, no ammo...close quarters...other guy is deflecting bullets with his sword, no ammo.

Assessing the practicality of using swords in Final Fantasy worlds which also include guns is a dangerous road to go down. :D

I've always just thought of it as FF protagonists being so badass that they give themself the inherent disadvantage of using an antiquated weapon just to make things interesting.

I guess the bad guys just wanted the good guys to feel like they had a chance.

That's always the problem with underestimating the people trying to stop your evil/selfish/insane plans. Always bring the big guns out in the beginning and kill them before they get a chance to level up.

It is just a matter of time before everyone in FF is carrying one of these

What about those that do, like Vincent?

Oh man, how cool would it be to run around in Gears of War as Lightning, carrying the Omega Weapon gunblade? That would probably be the best game ever.

On that note at least her Gunblade is either a Gun or a Blade. It isn't both at the same time (least from what I saw, I also never finished the game)

Yup, it transforms from a conventional gun into a sword. You could let off some covering fire and then transform it into a blade and charge, just like the Retro Lancer. Come on Epic, get on the phone to Japan and make this happen.

I wasn't a fan of that weapon either.Probably the dumbest idea for a weapon in a game and the way it was used was also stupid as hell.

This thread has made me so sad... I didn't check it for a few days, and then I come back everyone is bashing Squall's Gunblade (which, by the way, is easily my favorite weapon devised in any fantasy setting to date) AND Kumari (my favorite FFX character)?

What is this world coming to?

Also, the gunblade shot actual bullets. It matters when you pulled the trigger because the angle of the slice had to be such that the gunshot would be on target. If you look at good render/drawing of Squall's gunblade, you can see the notch above the tip of the blade where the bullet exits the sword. The sword blade is essentially a long ass gun barrel.

That further raises the question about why Irvine needed bullets, but not Squall or Seifer. I'd rather it shot blanks. And wouldn't it be better to combo it like Seifer's Fira->slash-to-Squall's-face? And why don't the knives the Evas use have chambers...? P.S. I don't think there is actually a notch. I think you're thinking of the grooves on both sides of the blades, which are fullers. (wiki it)

Behold the real life gunblade:
I think some modern day guns come with bayonet mounts, they just aren't used very much. (Apparently the US army discontinued bayonet training in 2010.)

I think it would be hella tight if they made a taco attach to a sword.

the taco blade.

you can use the blade to cut the taco to make it easier to eat.

you kno what else is hella tight?

Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey... becoz I'm playing it and it's pretty cool.
What about those that do, like Vincent?
He figured that he was already so badass that he can just use whatever weapon he wanted.

I actually thought the gunblade was cool, but then again I am in the minority that ranks VIII as their fave FF...

Also, just read some reviews for The Witcher 2. Looks hella tight. Is a console release confirmed? I tried the PC version of the first one, and the controls were just aweful. I can't put my finger on it, but something just felt way way off about it. Anyone suggest I give it another shot (or suggest how to make it playable?)

I have no problem with the gunblade, as FF has had stranger weapons (dictionaries, anyone?).

FFVIII isn't my favorite, but it's one of the very few Final Fantasies I've played all the way through more than once, so I guess that counts for something. The OST is way, way up there in my personal overall faves, though.

I've always wondered if the gun blade shot elemental magic into the blade as it strike?

It just shoots a normal round that just sends a vibration through the blade, which apparently makes it do more damage.

Wow, suddenly the gunblade became a whole lot less cool.

Witcher 2 rated for 360! Nice!

I bought Dragon Quest IX when it was on sale at Best Buy like a month ago. I have a question before I start playing it. The only other DQ game I've played was 7 for the PS1. I remember enjoying it for the most part, but after playing 15-20 hours into the game I just got access to the job system. And I remember my party all of a sudden sucking and I gave up because it was just going to take too much grinding for job levels.
Does something like that happen in 9?

Just bought a DS, any recommendations on which Dragon Quest game to get first? I think I want to wait to pick up IX as I've heard it's substantially longer than the other 3 but I'm having trouble deciding between IV, V, and VI.

I'd buy 4, 5 just got a re-print so the used price should slowly drop and 6 recently came out again resulting in a price drop over time.

Personally I liked 4 a lot more than 5 but most people tend to find 5 more epic.
