i always gotta go back to diablo II, no game has matched it's nature of killing things IMO.

i get new people hooked on it even today, and initially it's all "this game looks so old! i dont' know..."

and then they start killing huntresses in the cold plains and it's like sex
Diablo II is timeless. Every so often I look at it on my shelf and am tempted to dive back in, but I know I'll become addicted again and will play nothing else. It's bound to happen when III comes out anyway.

It's tough to get an experience like that on a console, though for what it's worth I think Sacred II is a very good game and has probably come as close as any I've seen.

every time i think of diablo 2 i think of collecting the staff parts

and act 3

then i don't wanna play anymore =(
5 was pretty terrible. It and 8 are the only games in the first 10 FFs that I've never beaten. I've even beaten X-2. I don't think I've ever played Mystic Quest though.
No accounting for taste; V is one of my favorites :p VIII I've beaten twice, and X-2 is some of the most fun I've had with a PS2 RPG.

Then again, I like all three games for the same reasons: the battle systems. VIII's story isn't all that great, and X-2's is fluff (V's is okay, but not my favorite), but oh man, do I love those jobs and junctions, not to mention the sidequests and minigames...
I can't go that far. V is a much better game.
i talked about it in one of the other rpg threads stating how MQ brought a lot of innovation and features to RPGs that are often overlooked. i forgot everything i said though.

i thought 5 was boring and overrated

Stuff like visible enemy encounters and AI controlled teammates were decried as "too easy/dumbed down/for kids" at the time. Now they're standard in the FF series and recognized as just being good design decisions.

Visible enemies maybe, but I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on AI controlled party members being a good design decision in almost any RPG.

I dont mind having the option to choice. When playing Persona 3 Portable, I have AI controlled during regular battle but switch to manual when things get tough.

Started playing FF4 TAY, and how did that white Mage twin grow up to have pink hair? I'm going to be disappointed if the black Mage doesn't have purple hair or something now. (I would say green, but Rhydia already has green hair)

I found my post!

-No random battles. In fact, instead of grinding endlessly for random drops by enemies, you could just go to the battlefield and complete it and get your prize.
-Speaking of grinding, instead of fighting easy enemies forever to get money to buy potions, you can simply revisit the town and open the chest.
-Zelda-like elements when wandering the map. Later employed by games like Lufia II and Wild Arms and somewhat similar to Secret of Mana.
-SAVE ANYWHERE!
-Multiple resistances that aren't limited to just elements. You have resistance to certain types of attacks as well.
-It came out for half the price. This IS CAG.

It was a lot less impressive than I thought.

Save anywhere is super classy though.

Then get ready to be disappointed!
NIS America just announced Atelier Totori for PS3 and ClaDun x2 on PSP
I hope they do a nice outer box for Totori like they did for Rorona.

Fair enough, but to me the best thing about the combat systems in Final Fantasy XII and XIII was how you controlled the high-level strategy, but the "hammer A fifteen times every turn" part was handled by the computer. :) I also love the lightning pace of the battles in Persona when the AI controls the other characters. But I agree that when it makes sense for the game, it's better to make it optional.

I had forgotten how you could save anywhere in Mystic Quest! Nice.

But in FFXII it was optional, right? You didn't have to use the gambits. I generally did (loved the gambit system once I figured it out), but sometimes for my mage type characters I controlled manually so I could micro-manage the offensive spell usage.

It was optional, and I wish I tried it without them. I got bored in FFXII after setting up gambits good enough to not press a button in most battles. Then I started going for bounties like 20 levels higher, and got my ass whooped.

Optional in the sense that you could break in at any time to manually issue a command, but I don't think the game could realistically be played by ignoring Gambits and manually issuing every command. At least, trying to do it that way would really suck. In Persona 4, you can turn off the AI and it just becomes a normal turn-based battle system.

i like what DQ did, in that relying on the AI in battle has certain advantages and disadvantages.

if you issue commands they can't react on the fly
for example....

there's team kainzero ryuukishi and chibijosh fighting against the boss elessar123

we are all fully healed

if i tell everyone to attack, and elessar123 always goes first, then i can have one guy that's damaged a lot in the beginning of the first round and is almost certain to die in the second round.

but if i give chibijosh the "heal" AI, and manually command ryuukishi, then even if elessar123 attacks, chibijosh will heal because of the AI and i won't be in danger at the start of a round

that was a very lengthy explanation for a very simple strategy that no one probably cares about

Picked up Star Ocean: The Last Hope a couple of days ago, pretty good JRPG for the Xbox 360 besides the hard achievements and the horrid voice-acting

and I liked DQ's AI controlled party members, made the gamer lazy, but at the same time, kinda worse as the AI made some dumb decsions sometimes....

One word comes to mind whenever I think about that game, "Kay".

Does anyone here want to group play through a newer released RPG? I still have Ar Tonelico 3, Radiant Historia, LoH TitS, FFIV Complete Collction and probably more that I'm forgetting to mention. I just find that if I usually actually follow through with beating a new released title in comparison to some of my PS1/PS2 games.

The Witcher. Do it now on GOG.com Still only on chapter 1. There is so much to do and so little time.

I don't really have a gaming pc :(

Radiant Historia is amazing, I just finished it easily the best RPG I've played in a couple years. It's really nice to play an RPG that doesn't swamp you with random battles and keeps the one you do need to fight relatively engaging.

I went out of town this weekend and brought my PS2 with me, so I decided to start up on Sakura Wars: SLML, this game is actually really neat, I'm liking the talk system in it and the anime cutscenes look really nice. I just got to my first battle, so I'm not sure how the battle system works out in it.

Raiant Historia is a excellent RPG from what I hear, has a old-school vibe to it and it's a Atlus game, so of course it's probably going to be good. Too bad I don't own a DS though

I'm thinking of starting with Legends of Heroes series next, doing the first three then doing Trails in the sky. I don't think they're related at all (1-3 and Trails) but I don't know, something makes me want to do it in that order.

skip the first 3 and start with Trails in the sky. The first 3 are just ports made by Bandi

I'm going to start Etrian Odyssey 3 this weekend. Probably play it for a month until I realized this party configuration won't really move me past the second set of levels.

I'm actually planning to play through Radiant Historia soon, so I'd be up for that.

I really want to play that but my PC can't handle it. Hopefully I can get around to building that PC I want this summer so I can play both games.

I'm in the middle of play Tales of Vesperia again but I could set aside some time for Radiant Historia. I was playing it during my time in Boson a few months ago and haven't touched it since.

I still have my copy of Star Ocean: The Last Hope(PS3) in the shrink wrap....

I've heard the PS3 version is "rare" in some sense, but I may be wrong about that. I haven't seen any copies of it in stores in a while

In stock in amazon for about $30

Oh boy... I think getting those costumes from that Hot Springs in ToV is going to be a bit of a pain.

I'd probably be down, but I'm still working on Pokemon. And I know if I get side tracked now, I probably am not going to finish it, haha. I am really interested in Radiant Histroia, because it has time travel in it, and I like time travel. :hot:

So, if you you guys do end up doing a group play through I might be down.

Woo! Just finished up Magna Carta 2. What an annoying final dungeon. The last boss wasn't too bad though, Rue destroyed him with a couple of chained Omni-Slashes.

Well it sounds like a handful of people are already in for this group play through. I've never actually been in charge of something like this so if someone wants to take over the role of making a thread when the time comes and keeping it updated feel free to do so.
So that's one other person in for Radiant Historia :)
No time. My dark master Persona 4 demands my obedience!

I would be down for either a Nier or RoF group play. Or any other RPG on the ps3/pc.

Finished up Fallout: NV during this whole PSN downtime ordeal.
I would probably pick up RoF to participate in a group play. Or any of the PSOne Classics RPGs.
SNAP!

Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story or Xenogears are also games I would nominate too.
