RPG Thread IX is a steaming pile of pointless monologue. Just Youtube the ending!
I find that the PS1 games are especially good if you resist the urge to level up. It forces you to use tactics and think a little bit more about everything.
In FF8, didn't everything level with you? I think the bosses were easier if you didn't level to 99, and just stuck around the 40s. Did I remember that incorrectly?

Nope, you're right.

Yeah I think that's true. IMO the worst thing about the combat was that GFs were so powerful but each had a 30 second animation :wall:

The Laguna subplots were always amusing though. In terms of the world, concept and first two discs or so, I though FFVIII was wonderful. It just really went downhill afterward.
Its definitely not as bad as FFX-2.Just knew that game was going to be bad when watching the intro to it.Really made me question what the hell I was playing. Also I think FFIX did a good job with its combat compared to the others on the PS1 for its old school feel.
X-2 was a pretty fun RPG. A lot of people find that out when they go back to it without expecting an actual sequel. It's just fan service with some fun mechanics.

I remember the second time playing through FF8, I pretty much didn't use the summons at all. I just drew magic like crazy and had crazy stats (multiple stats at 255s at lvl 99), and kept everyone at low hp for limit breaks. Much faster, and more damage than the GFs. I only really used Doomtrain on bosses.

Considering I used Squall, Zell, and Selphie as my main team every time I played, each of them easily did more than Eden. Well, Selphie mostly for Wall / Aura (or whatever it was called in FF8), and Rapture =P

The battle system was pretty good, but goddamn everything else was just horrible. The story, characters, voice acting, writing, music, fan service, and the loads upon loads of minigames. Also the whole task of getting a 100% was near impossible without a guide, and wasn't even worth it.In the end I see the game as just a quick cash in and nothing else.Really the game where the series went downhill for me.

Yep, first time I tried playing it I thought it sucked, but I gave it another chance a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Just go in expecting campiness.

And per FFVIII: I never cast Ultima because if it would take away from my rediculous strength stat from junctions :D Seriously love that game... *dodges hurled stones

Pre-Ordered ME3 Collector's Edition 360 at Amazon today. Sadly Gamestop isn't doing in-store Pre-Orders yet, and the 360 version is currently unavailable at the website so I can't use my credit there.

Granted the game has become less and less rpg-like it is still a game I'm really looking forward to.

True, VIII had an interesting leveling system. It was better to wait for stat bonuses before leveling up.

It was a good game though, the side quests really saved it.

Even the side quest to get Bahamut? X_X
Bahamut wasn't bad but I thought Eden was a bitch without the guide. Friggin steam levels...
Really? I think I got it on the first or second try. As dungeon puzzles go, it's not that bad.

The Tomb of the Unknown King, on the other hand...

what game am I playing?!?!?!

the best game!!!

Full trailer of XIII-2.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFDarr60D1c

- Some quicktime finishers for boss fights, apparently
- Snow's crew seems to be much more involved in this game, but where's Snow?
- Soundtrack sounds great, very Masahi Hamauzu like (he did some stuff in FFX, you'll probably hear the similarities)
- Lightning is playable, eventually :bouncy:
- No Vanille in a g-string, perhaps her and Fang aren't coming back =[
- Combat looks very similar, some new mechanics of engagement though
- Some odd platform segments [MINI GAMES!]

Seems like a lot of 2 person party play, how will they make that interesting?
the best game!!!
I wish I stuck with a core team in that game instead of switching demons everytime I got the forma.

I'll take the same route I did with FF13. Wait till it is at a reasonable price for me. I hated Hope and most parts of Vanille, but the gameplay and music was alright. But I don't need FF13-2 right away, but I'll bite at it when it is reasonable for me.
I think a game like IX would lose its charm though.
IX seems like a good DS game.

Not if it will look like the other FF remake on the DS =[

I'll admit that off that trailer, this game feel much less climatic of a reveal compared to XIII. Combat system is very similar, many enemies look to be re-used, most faces are familiar, and if it's really only 2-person-party combat I'll be a little put off because I like meeting new characters and appreciate the variety.

But, this is an actual sequel, not a stand-alone megaton. Like X-2 I feel like this game may just be adding new elements and a fresh feel to an already established concept -- like how most sequels function. So it may actually be entirely improved and a lot of fun, whether it's an epic game or just fanservice.

Funny how it's following a similar theme to X-2. New world for humanity, search for the existence of the ex-main character

I'm fine with them using the same summons again (I friggin love the transforming summons!) but I really hope there are some new ones added at least. Otherwise looks pretty decent. I was disappointed in XIII but honestly judged solely on it's own (ie, if it wasn't called Final Fantasy) it was an above average RPG, so I'll def. pick this up eventually.

 So which parts of Vanille did you like?

I'm personally a little underwhelmed by the trailer. The gameplay looks just as cool as it was in XIII, with some interesting additions, but I was looking forward to the further adventures of Lightning, not the further adventures of Serah and the NORA B-team. I hope that trailer is not indicative of the full scope of the story and main characters.

Hopefully they make the summons useful this time. They looked nice and all,but they really had no use to them.

True, I almost never used them, but they were transformers so they get a pass :D

don't they share the same graphical style, practically?

psx is probably slightly more detailed and obviously has more capacity
Wow I never thought I would be done with the FF series... I guess it took almost 20 years.
If they eventually make a good game then I'll be pleasantly surprised. Until then I just expect everything to be crap.

I just finished this. I rather disliked the alignment system, particularly how it affects what endings you get. After I realized how shitty my ending was going to be, I had no recourse because changing out alignment takes time. My advice is not to let GRILL CHEESE take the Law path.

Pretty disappointing E3 from Nintendo for RPGs. No Fire Emblem 12, Xenoblade or Last Story. DQM Joker 2 is the regular and not the Professional version.

To be fair, they had a lot more focus on their new consoles than the Wii. I wouldn't be surprised if those were announced in couple months for November/December maybe.

Yeah, I took the law path because I tend to play the good guy in games where you get a choice, but the law path in that game wasn't necessarily the good ending.

I don't know what you're talking about, the Law ending was awesome.

Nintendo has already published their release calendar for the rest of 2011, and no JRPGs are on there. Just saw an interview on Gametrailers where Reggie said that more unannounced games were coming before Zelda, but that's probably bullshit.
What the hell is that from?
Mike Meyers character from back when he was on SNL. The screen cap is actually from the "I married an ax murderer" movie I think.

It is from Ax Murderer. One of the funniest movies from the 90s.

Been busy with buying a house, taking care of my Mom, on vacation, etc., so I'm not up to date on what's going on anymore. Been playing FFIV when I get a chance. Still stuck in one of the last dungeons (I think) of Legend of Heroes. It's the dungeon where your party splits up. I'll get to it eventually, it's just a matter of time.

Finally finishing up Magnacarta 2, probably one of my favorite RPG experiences on the 360, and with the DLC, the achievements are easy for a JRPG, after I finish MC2, I'll probably go back and play Tales of Vesperia before Catherine comes out

and Final Fantasy XIII-2 looks sweet....and so does The Witcher 2 :D
Hell I'd be as happy wtih a FFVIII remake as I would a VII. *uses Zmonkey as shield against further stones**
This.

I always thought FFVIII was a better game than FFVII, I enjoyed the story a lot more than I did in FFVII. The soundtrack was 100x better and I thought the setting and gameplay elements were neat....

sorry for sounding like a FFVIII fanboy guys ;)

It's all right. It's nice when someone new shows up and basically says "Ignore everything I say from now on". :D

The soundtrack was better, I'll give you that. The story was what I had the most problems with. Remember the trip to space?

The soundtrack was one of the few good things with the game. Now even for people who like the story in 8,you really can't justify the shoddy writing in it,which the game has a lot of.
