Square/Enix is the Milton Bradley of video games. It was the shit back in the day and we keep playing the same great games but what have they done for me lately?

That sums up how I feel about Square since the merge. All the good Dev's Square had left for Mistwalker.

Square can't win for losing. Final Fantasy XIII was gloriously different and experimental, and all you ever hear about it is "Where are the towns?"

Meanwhile everyone falls over themselves to praise Lost Odyssey precisely because it's so traditional and formulaic.

I guarantee that if Sakaguchi still worked at Square and Lost Odyssey said "Final Fantasy XIII" on the box, no one would like it and everyone would complain about how Square milks Final Fantasy instead of innovating.

I can count on one hand the number of games Square-Enix has developed in-house since the merger that I have truly enjoyed (not counting remakes):

Final Fantasy XII
Crisis Core
FF Tactics A2

That's 3 games in 8 years. From what was once my favorite developer.

I've enjoyed other S-E games during that time, but all of them were developed externally (DQ VIII and IX, etc).

So yeah, I pretty much agree.

Different and experimental does not automatically equal good. Trust me, I'm very glad that you love FFXIII (someone should) but it's disingenuous to suggest that the people who disliked FFXIII only did so because it wasn't what they expected or wanted. It's entirely possible that some people simply don't think it was an enjoyable game, regardless of what it said on the box. If Lost Odessey had been called FFXIII and vice versa, I still would have loved one and hated the other.

No one wanted to love FFXIII more than me, believe me, but my dislike of the game had very little to do with the fact that it wasn't like the Final Fantasy games I loved as a kid.

Edit: Nor did it have anything to do with the lack of towns, since you mentioned it. ;)
Steambot is a game I've looked at from time to time and thought about getting, but I never felt like paying $30 for it. It seems like one of those games that should be like $8 by now.
I paid $10 for it back in the day. It was an alright game. But I had a RAAAAAAAGE moment and never finished.

Squaresoft > Square-Enix

I've only enjoyed a few games coming out of SE (yes, I did like FFXIII) but I remember back in the 90's, Squaresoft was just bringing out excellent games almost all of the time

Oh for sure, and I don't mean to imply that there aren't intelligent fans like you who gave the game an honest chance and just didn't like it. Final Fantasy XIII is a weird-ass game in a lot of ways. :)

I think you may be in the minority though, frankly. Not just about Final Fantasy XIII even, just the people who have made up their mind that Square can do no right, and any new game is either bad because it's too traditional, or bad because it's not traditional enough, no honest critique required.

And I like weird, and I like FFXIII, it was just a good game in every way (though I did wish there were towns, it just seemed...boring buying items out of a save point)

Oh, I can add more than just "Where are the towns?" But I'll spare you my haterade since that discussion has been exhausted 5 threads back. FFXIII is like a pizza without cheese. I need the cheez yo

If I could re-wire my brain to make myself like FFXIII, I would do it in a second. The Final Fantasy series is the reason I became a gamer in the first place, nothing depresses me more than how disappointed I was in it. Sadly, no number of chances that I give it ever seem to change my feelings on it.

Yeah...

I'm pretty confident I know where every RPG thread regular's opinion on FFXIII stands at this point, and I've never seen anyone change their mind on it either. Maybe we should self-impose a lifetime ban on FFXIII discussion? :D

Nah, let's just talk about FFXIII from time to time, I mean it is still considered a RPG, and this a RPG thread
Nah, let's just talk about FFXIII from time to time, I mean it is still considered a RPG, and this a RPG thread
Everything has been said about it though. In the past 5 or 6 threads there's probably been more posts devoted to it than any other game by a pretty large margin.

At this point it's pretty safe to say you either hate it or love it, nobody's opinion is changing at this point.

That totally sucks, and I know the feeling all too well, like when one of your favorite bands comes out with a bad album, and you want to like it so much but you just can't.

what the hell why are people talking about ff13 again

man
it was so fun when we were talking about hot girls in rpgs

I love Final Fantasy XIII, probably my second favorite RPG this generation, and I think it is a overall great game. Now I will never say anything else about it again ;)

I need to get back into Xenogears, badly, I just left my game at some point a couple of months ago and with Catherine beaten (I can go for the other endings, but those can wait), I think that Xenogears will become my main game to play at the moment.
Breath of Fire IV on PSN soon per IGN. (for anyone that doesn't already have it)
That's the best news I heard all year. Seriously, it's been a dull year.

They should just ban FFXIII altogther. opps I did it again :whistle2:#

The one thing FFXIII did right. :applause:

I hate that game. I bought it because it was $29.99 and I couldn't bring myself to skip it. I think the sales numbers for XIII-2 will be interesting.

If "hot chicks" hadn't already been mentioned, I wouldn't have been able to tell if that was a girl or a SE emo-feminine boy hero (e.g. Tidus). (I've never played FFXIII)

Lightning is probably the most attractive female of this console gen for me. She's like the anti-Chun Li with those skinny thighs.

Setting aside my dislike of the game, she'd be up there for me as well.

If we're not just counting RPGs, one I'd definitely put above her is Trip from Enslaved. I'd also probably rank Catherine (with a C) higher. Jury's still out on the new Lara Croft.

We talking about hot girlz. Always been one of my favs. Her tig ol' bittes grow with each game. I think she's hiding a secret booby rune

One of the big differences is that Squaresoft took more risks and made games that weren't just RPG's.Square-Enix just seems to stick with what their comfortable with in Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.

i dunno i wasn't feeling her slutty outfit in 5, and i didn't play 3 or 4.

she sure did look great in 1 and 2 though!
suikoden always has hot chicks! this is where 128 stars comes in handy!

i am all about promoting female equality so hey, even if it was a guy, all the girls here would be happy!

Is it odd that I find Kisara from Suikoden 5 hot? I'm not really into that anime chick stuff but damnnnn. I had her on my team alot.

I'm into Rita, she's got a badass attitude and any character voiced by Michelle Ruff gets the thumbs up from me, but in terms of "hotness," I've got to agree with kainzero, she's a little young looking.

Reboot Lara Croft is smokin'. Way better looking than the disproportioned hag that currently goes by the name. ;) I can't wait for the new Tomb Raider.

I really want to say Erica from Catherine is hot....but I'm not going to
If you want to know why, play the game and watch one of the endings

I'm fairly certain icebeast tries to make me question mine on a regular basis.
