Square can't win for losing. Final Fantasy XIII was gloriously different and experimental, and all you ever hear about it is "Where are the towns?"
Meanwhile everyone falls over themselves to praise Lost Odyssey precisely because it's so traditional and formulaic.
I guarantee that if Sakaguchi still worked at Square and Lost Odyssey said "Final Fantasy XIII" on the box, no one would like it and everyone would complain about how Square milks Final Fantasy instead of innovating.
Different and experimental does not automatically equal good. Trust me, I'm very glad that you love FFXIII (someone should) but it's disingenuous to suggest that the people who disliked FFXIII only did so because it wasn't what they expected or wanted. It's entirely possible that some people simply don't think it was an enjoyable game, regardless of what it said on the box. If Lost Odessey had been called FFXIII and vice versa, I still would have loved one and hated the other.
No one wanted to love FFXIII more than me, believe me, but my dislike of the game had very little to do with the fact that it wasn't like the Final Fantasy games I loved as a kid.
Edit: Nor did it have anything to do with the lack of towns, since you mentioned it.
