Scribblenauts - New Concept on Interaction - From Drawn To Life Devs

Damn, I'm not gonna get it for a while now... I have had a feeling that it would not be as good as all the hype lead me to believe. I think once you get over the initial excitement of typing anything, you are left with a bare bones experience. And you'll realize you can do the same thing on Wikipedia.

I find that whole thing suspect. Not a single other person - in all the E3/PAX/other convention impressions - nor other reviewers have had anything to say regarding such terrible controls.

Eurogamer hasn't ever really been that trustworthy anyway.

But this is the internets after all, so I'm barely surprised.

The other nonsense about how "the puzzles are uninspired" is ridiculous. It's like saying "Gee, I have this book about farming, and I read it, and there's not a single mention of black holes in it, and I really wanted to read about black holes, but this stupid farming book doesn't mention anything."

When did people forget how to fuckin' have fun?
According to GameStop, my 3 games and rooster hats (one for each of my kids and me) shipped today and I got upgraded from media mail to 3-day UPS at no charge. (Didn't pay shipping anyway, so free 3-day is alright with me.)

I can't wait.
Is there any multiplayer element to the game or is that just 3 copies so people don't fight over it? I'd be tempted but I think we can handle 1 copy. Of course there might be issues as I could see my daughter and both my sons wanting to play it. Plus I'll be taking it with me next week on a trip ;).

Anyway, I preordered at GS and better get the damn hat - otherwise I'll have to scrounge up trade-ins to TRU to take advantage of that promo. But I passed on an Amazon preorder originally just because of the hat at GS.

Having Drawn to Life as its predecessor isn't a good thing. Drawn to Life was a pretty uninspired, and dulll, platformer with a clever gimmick. The gimmick didn't make up for the rest. This smells of the same thing, but I'm still open to the idea if the reviews are positive.

Just picked up my game and rooster hat at GameStop. Can't play it until tonight, though (or more probably, tomorrow).

The only bad thing I read which seems likely is that things don't necessarily work the way you want. So you can try something particularly ingenious but it just doesn't work out the way you want, so you end up falling back on a few tools that tend to work all the time. However, I have the feeling that those few tools that work all the time will vary from person to person :)

How the hell do you screw up the controls? That makes no sense to me. There are only two mechanics in this game - type anything and moving. And they totally messed up one of them? Idiotic.

*shakes head in confusion*

I still think I will get this game today... but, it has me hesitant due to the fact they can't get one simple thing down. And controls do matter, they REALLY do matter. Look at Lair. That got destroyed mainly because the controls made it harder to do what you wanted to do.

Random side note: Xplay review = 5/5 (my prediction)

I have not encountered any problems with moving and I'm using an index card wrapped in duct tape as a stylus.

You're really stretching in your attempts to troll, Bear.

Once again, if anyone manages to get an extra rooster hat (one person is attempting already), please let me know. I just grabbed a copy from TRU for the $15 GC.

Trolling? I want the game. I just want to know if the controls are such a problem that it would be better off waiting. If not, I'm going out and getting it now.

Trolling in this case just means you're not hyping the game you haven't played enough.

3 copies so we don't fight. We've tried the game-sharing thing before and it just doesn't work with my 2 kids. They both paid for their own copies, though. And I need a separate copy for myself so it doesn't get sticky kid fingers on it :p

My fiance is coming over tonight, and we're going to try this out. I want to wait until he's here, and I'll let him write Chuck Norris and see what happens. :)

Oh and tada!!

I've played the tutorial and the first 22 puzzles of world 1-1. The controls are a little awkward, you can only move the character around with the stylus and sometimes he just doesn't stop when you think he should. I don't understand why they made both the d-pad and the A, B, X, Y buttons move the camera around. Why not let the d-pad control the movement of the character and the buttons control the camera. Even with that, the control issue is not that bad.

I still don't understand all the hype for this game. Seems like a mediocre puzzle game to me.

Awesome Rooster Hat!

I'll be interested in reading the impressions on this game because most reviews I've seen are very positive.

Arstechnica gave it a 'buy', so go buy it DarkNessBear.

Because you're holding the stylus in one hand and the DS in the other. They had both control the camera to accommodate righties and lefties.

What they should have done was you have to tap Maxwell or an AI to control it and move it with the D-Pad or ABXY buttons. Then press L or R to go back to controlling the camera and move items around.

Haha, already did. Thanks for the heads up.

The controls arent unplayable, but I keep finding myself pressing the dpad to move. Don't get why they just don't allow the option. As for the game, it is clever... definitely did not deserve the amount of hype it got. But it is clever. It would be cool if this same idea was on a console and the objects were more interactive.

If anyone would like to trade Professor Layton 2 for my Scribblenauts when I'm done, I'd gladly do it.

My GS only had 5 Rooster hats which was not enough for all the pre-orders. But I was lucky and snagged one. I plan on playing more a little later at work.

While messing around I typed in "Time Portal" and a portal popped up, but I couldn't go in it. Then after some time a demon comes out and kills me. Great.

My GameStop actually had a list of pre-orders in the order that they were placed. They also said that knew exactly where the cutoff was for the bonus item (I guess that was at the same time that the web site stopped showing the bonus item).

When I called the guy said that they had had 51 pre-orders before the bonus disappeared, so they had 51 hats. But he did say I needed to pick it up today to make sure I got the hat, so maybe they're only holding them for the first 51 pre-orders for one day. Anyway I got mine so I'm happy.

My Gamestop had 2 pre-orders, and 1 hat. Guess who got the hat. ME! :)

Interesting game so far. Just remember that Tidal Wave is a cool answer if you can figure out how to not die from it.
I haven't found a way yet

Same with the "Black Hole." Everything get's sucked in and dies

I got the game early (Saturday) and I've been playing it for a few days.

I'm on the 3rd world and so far, while it is great, it hasn't lived up to the full hype I had for it.

I don't really think the controls are a issue, they've worked fine for me.

What dissapointed me was how some words, such as "avalanche," are missing. Also, your creativity is a bit stunted when trying certain creative things, such as making a boy and girl pig and trying to make them create a baby (it's a puzzle to make 3 farm animals), doesn't work. Other functions you'd think would work that are a bit more common do not, such as powering a car with a power cable from those big electric cables that hang on the air suspended by wooden posts (the name eludes me).

Lastly, they often reuse things or only consider the last part of a multi-phrase word. For example, when doing lightning bolt, it thinks I am referring a to nut-bolt or arrow.
nuke makes things go boom.

also, nothing happens when you type in chuck norris.
No, Chuck Norris just moves so fast that you can't see him.

I found a really fun solution for a level I was stuck on.

It's in world 4. One of the first few action ones. You have to get past 3 Samurais to get the starrite. I wrote Death who killed 3 of the samurai. There's an Oni in the top right and I had Death fight him for kicks. Death lost but his scythe fell so when I moved that on the red switch to get to the Starrite.
Can you survive from the nuke blast if you go into a refrigerator?
No, I couldn't figure out how to crawl into the fridge.

Also, the fallout shelter does not survive the nuke blast. At least, not a close range one.

I haven't tried vault, though....

"Tidal Wave" is pretty devastating. I've found that "Bug Spray" comes in handy quite a bit.

The handwriting recognition is really shoddy. I have fairly neat penmanship and ScribbleNauts was totally stumped by about 1/3 of the letters I wrote.
The handwriting recognition is really shoddy. I have fairly neat penmanship and ScribbleNauts was totally stumped by about 1/3 of the letters I wrote.
I second this.

The game keeps thinking that my "N"s are V's or M's depending on how rounded or sharp the corners are.

Got the game - kids took it ;).

My 6 year-old, who's just learning to read typed something in that I didn't see and it made all these suggestions - one of which was Ra which he picked. Pretty cool that stuff like that is in there.

Anyway, the cool thing about it suggesting other things when it doesn't understand you is that he can just pick one and be surprised and it keeps him entertained even if it wasn't what he was trying to type.

I chuckled. The developers sure had a good time with this one. :applause:
When I called the guy said that they had had 51 pre-orders before the bonus disappeared, so they had 51 hats.
Wow, that's an incredible volume.
also, nothing happens when you type in chuck norris.
No, Chuck Norris doesn't work. But just typing in 'Chuck' brings some guy in glasses. Is that supposed to be Chuck Norris?
I second this.

I third that. I switched to the handwriting recognition part to try it out, and after trying to type a few words, I switched back to just selecting letters.
I second this.

The game keeps thinking that my "N"s are V's or M's depending on how rounded or sharp the corners are.
Weird...N's are my biggest problem, as well. Keeps thinking they're C's. It also thinks my E's are L's.

The QWERTY keyboard is pretty efficient and relatively error-free, so I've just switched over to using that.
I second this.

The game keeps thinking that my "N"s are V's or M's depending on how rounded or sharp the corners are.
It registers my N's as X's or U's (for capital and lower case, respective)
I second this.

The game keeps thinking that my "N"s are V's or M's depending on how rounded or sharp the corners are.
It's awful. I'd much much much rather write in my words but the game can't recognize my handwriting (which is pretty neat when I want it to be). The game seems neat so far but I am limited by my imagination - I can't seem to think of anything!
I second this.

I keep getting completely different letters nearly everytime. Which is odd since I owned an anagram game for the DS which let me write in letters and never had much of an issue. But the touch keyboard is faster for me anyway.

While I have some minor issues with the game as mentioned here, I'm enjoying the game a lot.

For some reason that fourth puzzle was giving me a hard time in world one. I think it's the action stage.
You've got that blue button which is sideways, and you've gotta push it to get yourself past the barrier to the starite. Finally, I put two boxers in the area where the button was, and during their fighting, they managed to push the button long enough for me to get through. :D

I'm kind of not liking that you can't interact with certain objects and avatars altogether. It makes the game that much harder.

This game amuses me. It's fun to be weird and be able to complete the game.
The level where you to had to protect the sandwich without hurting the ants I had such a good time with.

I was stumped for a while and then I realized if I had a purse I'd put my sandwich in it. So, that's what I did. I put my sandwich in my purse
The handwriting recognition is really shoddy. I have fairly neat penmanship and ScribbleNauts was totally stumped by about 1/3 of the letters I wrote.
You know, I was having issues with it too (I blamed it on my weird lefty way of writing letters IRL so I don't smear them) until I realized each letter has a *specific* way to make it that the game seems to recognize almost every time. For example, an "I" needs the top and bottom crossbars; otherwise you just get an "L".

After figuring out a few of the letters that were giving me a hard time, like an "n", I use the pad over the keyboard almost exclusively now.
Man, I hope the next LBP copies this game.
Me too. It'd be nice to actually get a good LBP game one day.

ZING!

Another vote for the handwriting recognition being awful. Are there not well-known or commerical packages that devs can plug into their games at this point? The NY Times Crossword recognition is excellent, and even the older Brain training games have better recognition than this. So, keyboard it is.

Regarding the volume of preorders and bonuses, it is a pretty big GS. I also live in the city where GS is headquartered, though I'm not sure if that would matter at all.

Also, forgot to mention that I didn't realize this game had a level editor! Has anyone tried it yet? Hopefully we'll see some good ones coming down the pipe pretty soon....

Got it (and the sweet hat) right before lunch. Had a little bit of time to play around on the title screen, spawned a gremlin and a cop, the gremlin stole the cop's gun and shot him... :D

Then I spawned a hammerhead shark, he suffered the same fate as the cop. Then I put the gremlin in a cage, turned it off and went back to work.

(And yes, I wore the hat the entire time ;) )
