Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution - Gen. Discussion & Info

I've never played a game of this type before, but always thought the series seemed interesting. I spent a long time on the demo and loved it. I definitely want to purchase the game when it comes out in 3 weeks.

Well Gamestop has this listed at $49.99 in their new ad... so maybe someone will have a deal on release week? 39.99? I'd bite at that price, most likely.

Hmmm... I'm going to have to give the demo a try. I've never played a Civ game though I've always liked that sort of thing. There hasn't been anything in a while or coming out any time soon that I've felt like spending even my cheap credit on but this, at $49.99, might just be the one. I think I have an old stale preorder at Gamestop (Persona 3 FES - got it somewhere else instead) that I can switch over.

But as someone else said, I see it getting cheap quickly... Ah, the dilemmas we CAGs face ;).
Played Civ 3 and 4 and loved them. I thought the demo was kind of good...I dunno, seemed a little dumbed down.
It did feel a bit simplified, more aesthetically-pleasing, and more accessible to people new to the game. I don't think it hindered my enjoyment of the demo, but it was noticeable.

And I played the demo and loved it like I loved the others. However, the D-pad controls are very bothersome.

I really hated the gibberish voices of the advisers. Very annoying. Luckily, there's an option to turn it off.

One thing that was really noticible to me in the demo was how fast you progress. By the end of the demo I was building cruisers, and that was 30ish minutes in.

I think that's part of the appeal to console people though, I mean I used to play Civ IV games that would take DAYS to play on the largest map with the most AI possible, I don't think that'd translate well on console, especially in online MP.

I am still looking forward to this, though I expect it to be Civ IV light.

Also, I am curious to how big the maps get. Having only 2-3 cities doesn't seem that great either, but with a limit set of options/upgrades, it may be better.

Sadly, it'll be $59.99 everywhere. Was that maybe the Wii version in the ad?

Doh.... well i think the Gamestop deals posted in the deal forum had it at 49.99, but I checked the actual ad in my email and it's 59.99.

I just don't think I can bring myself to pay that - while it seems like it would have some replay value, I don't know how much? and it is a fairly simple game. Just doesn't seem like I'd get my $59.99 worth...
...I don't think you get the point of Civ.
Expand your civilization before the enemy does to win in one of four ways. Sure, that's about it. This can be done in 2 days though and that's taking it easy. The replay value may lie in being able to use the different civilizations, ie. the romans, egyptians, etc.

I'm pretty sure I'm getting the point of the game.

There's more to the single player than the scenarios and setting up a game of Civ against the AI?

Anyone have a link to where I can find out info on the ways I should be building up, it's my first strategy game since a little of Brood War in ~'00/'01 and I've never played a Civilization game before so I'm pretty lost.

I'm not sure about Sim City, but with Civilization Revolution there is a clear end once you've built up to a certain point. It stops at a certain year and you can't keep on playing....It is a clear cut end....and if you are on top at this point you've beaten it.

There is nearly an endless number of scenarios to complete, ranging from which country you pick to to the number of AI you compete against as well as the size of the world. Add multiplayer in and you can easily continue coming back and experiencing new things each time.

I think the fun factor is determined as to whether or not you enjoy lounging around and playing this game casually versus "I must beat this game!"...

I loved the demo, and I've never played a Civilization game or any game like it before. I downloaded the demo for Civ IV and I think I might go for that instead. It is much more complex and difficult to play, but there are a lot of cool things that aren't in the console version. I think I'll wait until I can find the console version for around $30. They definitely dumbed it down a lot for the consoles. I'll definitely rent it and play the crap out of it for a week though.

D'oh! Now it's $59.99... I think that's a mistake. I know it isn't a huge difference from $50, but it is enough for me to pass I think. In either case I'd be using cheap credit transferred over from Blockbuster (using the current GS trade-in deal) but I still can't see myself paying that much for it. Maybe a rental at first is a good plan and then wait for a drop to $40 max. Or maybe I'll just get the DS version, instead, after renting the 360 one.

To be honest, after I played the demo I thought that this was an XBLA game. :)

Anyways, I'm interested, but not $60 interested...I think this one will be $30-40 within a month of release, and then I'll bite.

I'd get it but I'm too broke right now from buying all the summer megareleases. I originally thought this was an XBLA game (sure looks like one), so $60 is a bit steep. I might hold off until it's $30 because it really looks worth playing.

$60 is really expensive for this IMO, especially since it's essentially a watered down version of CivIV (which I would buy on the 360 anyway).

I'll probably wait for the first time it hits $40.

I think this will drop just like Culdcept and Beautiful Katamari did. I held out on Culdcept and got it for $26 from Amazon a few months later. After the Beautiful Katamari drop I am extremely hesitant to pay more than $40 for any recent releases that aren't AAA titles, regardless of the reviews. It's not like CoD4 where word of mouth and peer pressure from your friends list will convince you to get it. 90% of 360 owners won't even consider buying this. After 40 hours of playing Culdcept not one person on my friends list asked me how the game was or made a comment about it. I usually get 3-4 PM's on crappy games like Dark Sector or Timeshift.
I don't think it'll drop in price as fast as some of you guys think because it is getting really good review scores.
Review scores don't dictate pricing, sales do...and I think $60 for a stripped-down console version of a pc strategy title (albeit, a popular one) is going to be a fairly tough sell.

I could see this game going on sale for $40 as either a DOTD or at one of the retailers within a few months, especially if it's not selling well. I'm still going to wait on it. This game should have had a lower price point of $50 to begin with IMO.

Picked this up today. Excellent game.

Supposedly selling very well and selling out in some places. saw a few people on my friends list playing it as well.

I picked it up this afternoon and if I hadn't had to work tonight I'd still be playing it. For most people it'll be a solid $30-40 game, but I don't regret paying full retail for it at all :D I've spent most of my time at the office just going over the modified tech tree and working out the various racial bonuses, and I haven't done that for any game (including Civ4) since High School. It's watered down, but it still has that "just one more turn" feel down perfect.

I picked it up today as well.

had a close call on winning my first full game tonight, the Japanese were on their way to Alpha Centari and I had about 6 turns to take their capital for a domination victory. I had to rush settlers to my capital (not hard after all the cities I had taken) and build the Manhattan Project, got it down to 2 turns then had just enough gold to rush it. put some tanks on a cruiser, parked it 2 squares from Kyoto, nuked the city and rolled tanks in with one turn left.

had a blast playing the full game, the demo was fun but I wasn't ever able to score a real victory in it. I'll be playing single player for the next couple nights, try to get some more cheezmints, but if anyone wants to play some multiplayer during the weekend feel free to add me to your friends list and send me an invite when I hop on Live.
Is it true that once you beat the game you can't continue to keep playing just for fun (like on the PC)?
That's what the reviews said.

That is true, probably my biggest complaint with the game.

The game is over when you win, you can't keep playing.
That is why I said earlier that you can beat the game really fast. There's just different game types that you can play to beat it again and again.

I've set this game on my next game in my Q and I'll see if I like it or not. Usually more of a RTS gamer than a TBS guy but did enjoy Alpha Centari. The graphics look great and the real history and historic icons in this Civ game looks promising.

I'm buying this tomorrow when BlockBuster is supposed to get it since I have a lot of credit there. I'm getting it and 5 or 6 of my friends are very interested in this game too. I think this will sell very well, as all of my friends that played the demo are going to buy it. I assume that the demo will have had a great effect on a lot of people.

I am heavily considering buying this game at full price. Well, 24 dollars in gs credit plus 4 360 games I dropped a total of 20 bucks on at BB. Is it worth it?

I am a big fan of the pc ones (although not very good, because I do not have the patience for uber-micromanagement). I like the concept. Is there enough depth to satisfy a pretty hardcore console gamer and admirer of the pc series, but not so much that I am going to cry at how much stuff i have to do?

yeah, most of the micromanagement is gone. it's slimmed down for faster gameplay. to me, a CivIV vet, it's a lot of fun. I have gripes, but minimal ones.

ton of replay value.

awesome game. Had some trouble getting it. It was sold out at the two stores nearest me. There was one copy left at Wal-mart that I picked up. Was going for a tech victory with Greeks but ended up with a cultural victory
I know this is the 360 thread but by chance has anybody compared the 360 version to the DS version
They're exactly the same (in terms of game play). The DS version relies on 2D sprites and looks much different, but the game content is the same.

Thanks I'm thinking of going the DS route. Although playing this on live is probably fun as hell.

Just a warning, this is as addictive as previous Civ's. The people on my friends list never seem to log off and all they are playing is this game. The reason i know is I'm on playing this for hours and hours.

At first you think they have over simplified it, but the controls are so good once you get used to them. Hours just disappear.

That's always the sign of a good game. Just sent in Culdcept Saga so hopefully even though this game is in low availability it will ship out to me from Gamefly lol.
I loved the demo of this game. I'm picking it up on Tuesday along with NCAA 08. Should be fun.
Man, NCAA 08 will be nice and cheap on Tuesday.....;) I know you meant 09.....

I picked this game up Wednesday and this is the first time I've been able to tear myself away from it. I still want to kick Sid Meier's fucking ass for making a game that will suck years off my life. ;) This game is as addicting as I remember the first 2 civ games. Firaxis was able to translate the PC controls to a game controller pretty well. My main beef (besides Mr. Meier) is that it is short. I recall playing Civ I and having absolute marathon weekends. I understand the need to speed the game in the beginning but once you pass into the modern age (when your civilization and the others should be pretty developed and all the fun toys are available like a stealth tank that I didn't even know was in the game) you or your rivals are close to winning the game. If I'm not mistaken, I thought that in civ I the time passed in months as opposed to years. Anyway, this is one of the best strategy games available on console. If thats your thing you should already own this game.
