SONY PS3 SLIM Thread, AVAILABLE NOW $299, SHARE YOUR STORIES
The 360's userbase size-wise is pretty much a result of the 1 year head start. I'm curious to see how this affects sales this holiday season...
Where did you makeup such BS facts? MS has the lead b/c they also have more 3rd party support and better overall games, marketplace and player vs player functionality.
and to both of you I say... what's the better deal for 300... Slim for 360? Blu ray, Wifi, free PSN, bluetooth, is not such a bad deal. deinitely getting a better console for the dollar. Halo, Gears, those are games are all old.. no one cares about them. But still the point now is.. what's the better deal?
xbox 360 has the better overall game selection and online play. Obviously your jealous about the sale rate of the software for those old games. PS3 just does not have the software sales rate the xbox 360 has.
The question is will this bring new people in? And right now i think that is a no.
How do you get 'no' with this price drop and slim announcement considering a lot of us on here in this very thread have said this was our price point, I'm buying it on X date, etc., etc.?

While I am personally going to be buying the PS3 at 299.99.... I think they held off on the drop too long. I think they permenantly damaged their market share to a point where it will not recover.

http://nexgenwars.com/

It's a rough estimate, but according to vgchartz.com the Xbox 360 sold 5,930,609 in its first year, which just about makes up the difference in units sold right now. Units sold usually corresponds with userbase...

Since there's not a Gears of War 3 or Halo: Reach coming out right?

Judging from this comment, and your comments in the "why is MS still charging $50/year for Live" thread, it's obvious where your bias lies.
I swear, judging from your posts you're either 12 or have the downs.

80 GB = $300
160 GB = $400

If you don't feel like waiting, Amazon already has the price cuts in effect now.
The one million unique users everyday playing Halo 3 would like to disagree with you.

And, I'm just hoping that this drop brings down the price of used 40 GBs significantly. I had originally considered getting a PS3 last holiday season, but looks like the time will finally come this holiday (come on Amazon on Black Friday...)

thats website is not bad, but really hard to believe. I would have figured the xbox 360 has sold more global hardware units

I am with you, i want a ps3 with backward compatibility.
Halo, Gears, those are games are all old.. no one cares about them.
That's pure craziness. I'd bet that Halo 3 and Gears 2 have more people playing them than any game on PSN other than the two Call of Duties.

That being said, I agree with you that the slim is the best deal on the block.

I just hope that a smaller enclosure doesn't mean that the slim is prone to overheating.

did I mentioned it had a web browser? lol I'm not really focusing on trying to say which games are better, which online is better... I'm just trying to focus on.. "is 299 a good deal for this version of the PS3 (vs other consoles)?" Because right now that's really what's most important in the future success of the PS3. Not if I'm jealous of some console that is destined to failed 54 percet of the time - I don't even think you fail that much.

COD4 at some point in time was the most played game on live beating out Halo 3. I'm glad that the PS3 is 300 that way if I ever need a replacement, I can buy a new one.. (instead of having to pay 400/500).

Hey, i won't disagree. The 299 ps3 slim on paper sounds like a much better overall deal! no argument there

I mean I am regreting selling my 60GB Launch model, if I hadn't sold it for $1,000 2 days after launch.

I think it's a nice looking system. For $300, I'll definitely be recommending this to friends who are on the fence or need a Blu-ray player.

250W So it uses more power than a Launch Xbox 360??

Are the Slim's supposed to be 45nm that can't be right

The original PS3 had/has a 380 watt PSU I think, and uses about 170-200 watts. I'd imagine it's the same case for the Slim, 250 watt PSU, about 90-120 watts when used.

I was wondering when the 54% BS figure would come out...and if you read the article joystiq posted on it, even they think it's too high to be considered fact. The PS3 also has a 10% fail rate. Yes, the 360 is higher, but I think it's irrelevant. It's about the games, and the 360 has better (subjective) and more (fact) titles.

And really, it's not like we can answer the question in this thread, because it's all about the individual end-user - there will be no across the board answer.

It SHOULD upscale to 1080p...since they said it'd have all the features of the current models, and the current models do upscale...unless I'm terribly terribly wrong.

-You'd really use Linux? It's almost useless.
-Of course you can swap.
-Why would it not upscale DVDs?
- No PS2 BC yes, but eh. There is still PS1 as a bonus.

I hear this model might pass TrueHD and DTS-HD MA instead of decoding it internally.

No linux shouldn't be an issue, we all have computers (or are using the built-in browser). No hard drive swap? The panel on the front (bottom right) where the logos are looks like it can be removed...and it looks to be about the size of a 2.5" HDD. I'm not sure where you are getting thees upscaling concerns from, I don't see why they would remove that.

And as for BC, it's most likely coming via firmware or download at a later time...for a price, no one knows but Sony.
That's the thing: we're talking about Sony.

As you point out, PSP Go is $250.

PS3 Slim will be $400 at launch or I'll play through Haze without stopping.

No, it has the same functionality of the 80's that are out now (aka only PS1).
Oh ok. I guess I must have one of the earlier 80 GB systems. I didn't know they cut out PS2 BC in later models.

All over my face.

are they going to bundle the 80Gigs with some games and maybe an extra controller, otherwise why wouldn't people just wait 2 weeks and pick up a slim?

so technically its not that much smaller is it? looks kinda like they flattened it out. btw aside from bc whats it missing that the earlier ps3s have?

It does help sony... in the fact that if someone has a system that breaks on them it at least may have them consider a PS3. Its more likely that people may try the PS3 because its a viable option (due to the cheaper price tag). Plus MS has bad customer service (according to the same study) which can also get people to switch. The problem in the past was that the ps3 option was too price. Hopefully, these Slim PS3 will lower that 10 percent rate.

Most likely. I bought the Motorstorm bundle in late 07.

Do I have a chance in hell at selling my 80GB now? I wanna get the Slim but don't want to pay out of pocket for it.

If you sold yours, most likely. Wherever you sell it, be sure to note that it has Backwards Compatibility whenever possible. In Bold and CAPS...basically put it everywhere and anywhere on your posting.

Most people forget that the 80 GBs at one point did have BC, like the model you have.

How much do you think I would be looking at? I also have a DS3 controller.

Edit: What's the BC rate for the version I have? I'm having trouble finding info online.

My Plan

#1. Purchase $299 Fat PS3 at Best Buy 8-19 Do not open it.

#2. Get $25 Gift card when you spend over $250 by 8-22

#3. Go Back on 9-1-09 (or sooner because Sony says can be before) And swap FAT for SLIM

#4. Buy MGS4 with $25 Gift card pay only $5 bucks
