Unless something has changed, the phat PS3 hasn't been able to play SACDs since the old backwards compatible models (20gb, 60gb, old 80gb).

Never Mind guys Read the Firmware 3.0 release the Linux feature will be taken away from all PS3's

Ø PS3 system software update version 3.00

Concurrently with the release of new PS3, system software will be upgraded to version 3.00 on September 1. The update adds various user-friendly features such as the “What’s New” screen, where users can quickly browse the new items available in PlayStation Store as well as their recently played games directly on the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar), with short cuts to each piece of content. PS3 will evolve continuously with the system software updates, further improving the operability and enhancing the user experience available through the network. PS3 owners will be able to enjoy new features by simply updating the PS3 system software to version 3.00 via the “System Update” function on the XMB*3.

Ø BRAVIA® Sync™ Feature

The new PS3 system is also equipped with the BRAVIA® Sync™ feature. By connecting the new PS3 system and a BRAVIA TV with the HDMI cable, users are able to directly operate the XMB on PS3 using the TV remote control. Other functions include “System Standby” that will automatically turn off the PS3 system when the BRAVIA TV is turned off*4.

Ø “Vertical Stand” for new PS3 (CECH-2000 series)

By utilizing the separately sold “Vertical Stand”, users will be able to set the new PS3 in vertical position*5, making it easier to place the PS3 system anywhere at home. The vertical stand will become available in Japan on September 3, 2009, at a RRP of 2,000 yen (including tax) and in North America at US$24*6.

Ø Removal of “Install Other OS” feature

The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system.
2 questions what are super audio cds and can the mgs 80gb models ps3s play them?
It's just a CD format that only extreme audiophiles care about, and 99.9% of the public will never use in any way, shape or form. It supposedly provides better quality, though so do the $1000 gold plated audio cables. Also, any PS3 that has PS2 BC will also play these CDs.

thanks for the info mate. its funny how much they pcked into this thing i really had no idea bout. gives me an idea of what they were trying to do with the ps3 to begin with but like you said plenty of the stuff on it people dont know about or care about.

Wow that vertical stand is ridiculously overpriced. Anyway, i hope all you new buyers enjoy it, it looks awesome

The only thing that could be better is the logo, it doesnt stick out at all. Basically theres no branding
Thanks sony for not pulling a nintendo and making people who bought previous versions feel lame!

Did anyone really want linux? If you wanted it, you had 3 years to get a system for it. Otherwise, it's just another entryway for Sony to close off to pirates which somehow still cannot crack it
I'm so jealous of that matte anti dust magnetic finish
Yeah too bad the sides are not matted.

I originally bought the PS3 thinking that I would install linux on it

And I still do.

The biggest reason for me wanting to install the penguin on a gaming machine is very very simple: Emulation. The PS3 would have been the HTPC that I never had, and I always wanted to have the ability to play some old-skool NeoGeo and SNES games that I missed from the past.

Now, I'm kinda torn on the issue. The only thing holding me back from going Linux is the fact that I small hard drive, and that I never got around buying an upgrade for it. Truthfully, I don't even know if I'll ever turn my old fattie into the ROM beast that I always wanted, but I would hate to have the option closed to me forever.

But here's a really important question: what happens to those console owners that have Linux going on in their PS3's.

Other than no linux on the system this looks like a good upgrade if you want a smaller PlayStation 3. I wont get one until the disk drive goes out on mine fat model. Also I had it for less a year.

hows the ps3 using it as a media center? is it better than the 360? and what movie file formats does it play? im getting sketchy answers from google

It worked fine when I used it. It's quicker than the 360 for that since it doesn't load a separate program which takes a minute or two to load. With the PS3, it's on the XMB. As for video formats...not entirely sure.

If you're a Mac user, MediaLink is a fucking fantastic program for streaming video to your PS3. divx, avi, mp4, whateva.

I don't know if it's better than the 360, though - I don't have a "windows media center pc" as a mac user, so I go with what works - and MediaLink is hot fuckin' fire.

I think the price drop is great for Sony and the PS3. However, I cannot understand why the Uncharted bundle is still $100 more than the 80GB version. The HDD is twice as big and it comes with Uncharted, big deal, that is not worth the $100 premium - $50 at most. They should have dropped that bundle to $349.99.

As for the looks of the slim, I kinda like it.
So I guess the 8/24/09 release must be pretty official. Sony said nothing about this at the conference but GS and others have put their presales up so I'll go with that for now. lol a 1 week reserve window, strange.

GS link
Im not familiar with preorders, does 8/24 ship date mean it will be available in stores on that date? I thought the release was 9/1

What's up with Sony pricing the older models the same as the slim? The older models are pretty much the same as the slim (sans installing Linux). Wouldn't common sense dictate pricing your older stuff at a cheaper price than the newer model so it actually motivates the people to buy your older stuff?

I hated how the slim looked until I saw the video between the two models. I personally love how it takes up less space than the bulky older model. I prefer the "Playstation 3" logo over the "PS3" logo though. $299 is perfect so November can't come soon enough.

Your move, Microsoft.

I heard Microsoft was going to cease production of the Pro Sku, and drop the Elite down to $299.99 soon. Leaving the Arcade and the Elite on the market only, that is until they announce a sku with the natal device.

Well, the dropping of the Pro has happened, the price drop on the Elite hasn't happened yet, but everyone assumes it'll happen soon. But by dropping the HD cables, it makes the PS3 pretty comparable.

fuck. I like the slim a lot. I just bought a fuckin 80gb on Christmas.

I wonder what the best/cheapest way to turn this PS3 into a Slim?
am i the only one that's not impressed?
Add me to the 'unimpressed' list. With the price of a replacement BR lens costing $70 from most places online, I'd say Sony can afford to drop a bit more off the price.

Plus, it's not like they don't have other divisions they could fall back on if it'd be such a burden for them to take a bigger hit with a larger price cut.

However, I have a feeling that once people wanting to run emus on the PS3 find out the new one doesn't allow Linux, the older SKU's will jump a little in value since you can add a second OS to them.

Now if I could just find someone to offload my year old fat model on for about what it's gonna cost for a slim, since I'd rather have one that doesn't gobble up electricity like crazy.

And yet again you spew your crap. Why do you have a PS3 again? Did someone give it to you as a practical joke or something?
nope i'd be happy if the thing was backwards compatible.
Go buy a 60GB one off Ebay then or buy a PS2 and shut the fuck up. Nothing ever pleases people, it sucks to be you. Your going to still be playing your 5-8 year old games on the PS2 while I play the latest and greatest on the PS3.

As for IATCG, only a very small percent use Linux. Another reason they got rid of it. If you want to play your illegally downloaded ROMs, play them on your computer or go buy the system its on and play it. This thread and the one about Sony's press conference, all you are doing is bitching. Your like a person who receives welfare for being a bum and not trying to find a job and then you bitch how the country is so unfair to you. Grow the fuck up.

Not really. I wanted one and I had amassed some cheap credit, plus I sold off my last gen collection of mostly clearance games for $450 shipped. Otherwise, I would've waited and I probably SHOULD have, since very few games have really impressed me on the system since I got it.

Angry much? Why does it bother you personally that someone critiques the PS3, yet owns one? Do you have a large personal stake in the company? Or do you just like to defend giant corporate entities from the 'evil infidels'(read: fanboys) who speak against them?

Seriously, can't anyone have an opinion other than 'Sony is the bestest'? Or is that forbidden?

As for illegal anything, I don't even care one whit about Linux or emulators, but for those who do this latest PS3 revision is a serious blow to them.

Then again, Sony seems to like taking out stuff while barely reducing the console's price. Maybe next they'll take out the USB ports and require that you buy a seperate charging accessory for your controllers from them, so they can make more money(like the idea of them selling PS2 games on the Playstation Store).

look i don't know what your problem is but don't talk to me like i'm a piece of fucking trash you asshole. i don't want a backwards compatible ps3 and i do play all the latest and greatest as you say on my ps3.

i'm just not happy with the fact that sony has lost a shitload of money on this system and they might as well throw backwards compatibility on the slim. that way that would get more people to want to buy the fucking system if they get a blu-ray player, bigger hard drive, slimmer design, and backwards compatibility. now i'm pretty sure that would make sony a better contender in this console war.

what you need to understand is that people are entitled to their own god damn opinions and to keep your fucking mouth shut and let them talk. don't just be an asshole just because you feel like it.

THe price drop is great for those that don't have one - but if you already do, there's no need to go slim, particularly with no BC.
I love how "Playstation 3" is no longer in the Spider-Man font.
Sony has announced its no longer "PLAYSTATION 3" but rather "PlayStation 3" along with the new logo in their press release. Of course they have been using "PS3" more often lately.

hahaha wow, if they are losing money why would they include BC and don't say software BC is good, if really sucks. The would lose even more money just to support a small niche of people. If you don't want BC in your console, then what the fuck are you bitching about? You say you already own a PS3, what difference does it make to you if a small niche of people, which your dumbass is not apart, does not get BC?

As for IATCG, ya you have your opinions, but as for you saying you own one, you said yourself your not even impressed by any of the PS3 games. So why don't you sell your fucking PS3 and get a Wii or something. If you don't give one "whit" about Linux, don't bitch about it. Just like I said to the dude above me, it's a niche group of people that use that. Last, this is not the 360, in which, if you want recharge capabilities, you have to spend an extra 20-30 bucks. talking about fanboy, IDK what camp your in, but get your shit straight and not use problems with other systems as the PS3's problems. Made me laugh when you called me a fanboy, proud owner of a 360 and PS3, seems like your just a disgruntled PS3 owner. Keep on bashing away and your going to get blasted by everyone in these forums.

Last to Troy, were not angry people, we just don't like it when trolls come in and start bitching about every little thing about the PS3.

70% off of the original manufacturing costs of about $850...in 3 years, that's fucking amazing! They've been taking a hit with the price for the past 3 years in order to sell this thing, and now, when they have a chance to finally, possibly, start making some money, you want the price cut to be MORE than $100? Go fuck yourself - courtesy of Sony.

P.S. You seem like the type of person that is never pleased. Must be a sad existence...

You must be fucking retarded or something. $100 price cut and the ONLY removed feature is Linux support...yeah, keep talking out of your ass, kid. The rest of us will enjoy our new PS3's :)

I am hopeful that it is quieter and less like a ceramic space heater.
The matte black and lack of plasti-chrome are also positives for for me.
I might just sell my old 60gb. I still wanna see it hands on though.

Is there any local gamestop store that take preorder of slim ps3?
I do not wanna preorder online becoz there is shipping and handling fee.

Is there anything similar for Linux?

I have a Linux server with all of my media being served via a Samba share, but I am under the impression that the PS3 can't interface with this directly.
