SONY PS3 SLIM Thread, AVAILABLE NOW $299, SHARE YOUR STORIES

ALL of the Most successful systems Have had Backwards compatability of some kind with the previous generation of titles, Xbox 360, Wii, DS Lite, PS2 (had full PSone BC)

the only system to eliminate BC totally is in last place, go figure. And loosing Billions of dollars even though, Sony dominates, in sales, of hardware, PSP PS2 and PS3, and still SONY posts a multi BILLIONS of lost revenue.

I am telling you it is all related to BC, and stability of the system.

If Sony said tomorrow ALL PS3's will have 100% full BC as of now.

Sales would explode, and people, would buy PS3's like Turkeys on thanksgiving.
So you have a backlog of really crappy games? Or what? Obviously there are games you like, since you seem to buy things like my depression-era grandparents, otherwise you wouldn't have bought them.
Actually, I have a few stinkers in the backlog, but I'm of the mindset that I'll try ANY game for $2-5 when they hit clearance.
This guys is a fucking idiot, I never said anything about HD picture, put words in my mouth. Then you start bitching about exclusives. Well you want exclusives like DLC and left 4 dead go get a fucking 360. IDK how your enjoying anything with your PS3, if you see all the these problems. Accept the 150 dollar loss and get the fuck out of this thread. You obviously don't think much of the PS3 when you play multi-plat games, go try killzone 2 or the resistance series or warhawk. Don't come in and say the PS3 doesn't have exclusives, what Final fantasy was not secured, so I am going to bitch about. They don't need to throw money at it. It used to be developer loyalty, but everybody wants money so of course they will sell it on the 360 too. Plenty of new Sony IPs coming out, but your still going to bitch cause gears or halo is not on the PS3. One last thing, you say its taking for ever for God of war 3 to come out? When sony develops a game in house they take forever so it will be good. Not trying to bash on halo, but they don't need to churn out a new god of war every 1 to 2 years. Keep on bitching about pointless things, I wonder whats next?
First of all, I would NEVER buy DLC, since some if it is just plain overpriced(if I owned a 360, I would NEVER pay $20 for the GTAIV DLC).

As for playing exclusives, I tried Resistance a couple of times(most recently from the Hollywood Video $5 sale) and I couldn't stomach it and I can't stand most standard 'good guys shooting the invading aliens' crap, so that eliminates a good percentage of shooters. About the only shooter I've had fun with on PS3 has been Bioshock, a multi-platform game, but ONLY because it added quite a few new things(imo) to the mix.

As for Warhawk, I paid $5 for my copy of it from the HWV sale, so for that price I'll gladly play it sporadically and get my $5 worth out of it. But online only games suck, especially if you're paying MSRP for them and especially if that's the ONLY game the other people playing play ALL THE TIME. I go into games to enjoy myself, it's not fun getting your ass handed to you in 3 seconds flat.

As for the games that aren't exclusive anymore and/or will never be on PS3, I couldn't give a shit less about Final Fantasy, Gears, Halo, etc, etc, etc. Most of those 'big name games' are boring as shit anyway.

its done man its done the guy from sony already said bc wasnt coming back. its over. besides the statement holds true that those people who really want bc in their ps3 went ahead and got a ps3 with some form of bc and those kinds of ps3s can still be found.

You mean like I should've waited and bought Little Big Planet since the GOTY edition or whatever is coming out with some of the DLC right ON the disc. Hopefully, for those of us who were early adopters, they make those packs on the disc GOTY edition FREE.

You can always look back in time and say that the xbox has the better (and largest) library of games. That's something that's said and done, and nothing can be done about it. However, looking forward, and looking onto 2009 and at least the first quarter of 2010.. I think that Sony has the best lineup of games to go with their 299 system. when it comes to BC.. I mean are you NOT going to buy a system because it doesn't have BC. I would think that you may hold off because you don't want to totally drop all the previous games you were playing, however in the end, once you but that new console.. BC will most likely become less of an issues, as you main focus on new releases.

I'm kinda shocked amazon doesn't have a ship date up yet. Other sites are saying the 24'th and at the press conference they said no later than Sep 1st. Neither one is far off so how does amazon not know.

Best Buy has the PS3 for preorder now, and they are showing an arrival date of 8/21-8/27

I tried to post the link, but this forum has a rule that new users cant post links, So lame...

is there any word of initial shipment sizes given to stores? I dont want to go to buy one only to find out they are all sold out, which I think it will be because it seems that everyone wants a slim (it's the #1 videogame related item on Amazon).

Wait a month or two until the hype dies down and you should be able to find one without much hassle.

...If you want one day 1 just pre-order it.

I was looking to pre-order it at best buy but I want to do it in store (because I want to pay with cash). Does anyone know if they are taking pre-orders in best buy stores?

Is your phone dialing hand broken? /joke

Seriously though, just call and ask.

I guess I'm finally going to make the jump and get me a PS3.

Is there a list somewhere of PS3 exclusive games? Anything multi-platform that I've wanted I probably have on the 360 already.

I know I'm gonna grab Disgaea 3 and LBP, but what other PS3 exclusives are worth my time? Resistance 2? Warhawk? Do those games have active online communities?

Also need to add on Bluray to my Netflix account...

I'm the same as you, I've been waiting for the $300 price drop since the thing launched.

I've only ever played PS3 games on my bro's and my cousin's but...

LBP is just a no for me. Floaty ass controls completely ruined it for me, and in general the game just never seemed "fun" to me. Great for those people who love it, but I honestly think it's not for everyone, unlike what reviews and what other users may tell you.

Other than that, I really liked Warhawk from what I played of it. Resistance 1 and 2 feel generic, but seem like competent shooters. Then there's Uncharted and Uncharted 2. I really liked Uncharted, the only thing is that IDK why the enemies in that game can take 3-4 shots a piece when their models aren't wearing any armor. Uncharted 2 looks amazing and I can't wait to pick it up after I pick up the Slim. Then there's KZ2, where the aiming was...less than stellar.

Then there's both Motorstorm games, which were meh to me, but I can totally see why people who like arcade racers love that series.

Then you have all the PSN-exclusive games like the Pixel Junk games, Shattered, Every Day Shooter and Fat Princess (though it may be DOA and not have legs to really last as a wildly populated MP game now because of the botched launch)
I go into games to enjoy myself, it's not fun getting your ass handed to you in 3 seconds flat.
Maybe if you spent more time actually playing games instead of scouring the threads for the next big clearance at the end of the rainbow, you'd actually be good at them.
I just got a call from gamestop on my preorder. They said it will ship today or tomorrow.
Pics or it didn't happen...jk

Seriously though, can anyone else confirm? If they're shipping today or tomorrow, that August 24th date is looking more likely that is when the console will hit retail stores.
I did call. After being transfered around for over 10 minutes and not getting an answer I gave up. Thats why I ask
Answer: Best Buy sucks

They called to verify my order. Told me it would ship today or tomorrow, but I guess its possible, he wasent aware it was a preorder, maybe he thought it was the old PS3 model? Oh well as long as it ships on the 24th, im not worried about it.
I really liked Uncharted, the only thing is that IDK why the enemies in that game can take 3-4 shots a piece when their models aren't wearing any armor.

I adored LBP's play. If it's not for you it's not for you, but I think it's honestly worth a try, even if I don't like the cost of the DLC - only the Metal Gear Pack is worth it for me.

well i went to best buy today and you can not pre order the ps3 slim in store (or at least at mine). They also were completely out of ps3 fats (had a few uncharted bundles).

also i just checked GS website and it says it now ships 8/25

I have to start checking prices on these games. What isn't worth $60 may very well be worth $20.

I was thinking about Uncharted, but isn't the sequel shaping up to be biggerbetterfastermore? I may just wait for that.

The only FPS exclusives I would be into are online multi ones. I don't care for single player shooters. That Socom game looked awesome, but then I remember hearing there were issues with online play when it came out.

You know I have never ever played a PS3, not even for a second? I only know two people that own one and one of them only uses it for Bluray movies. It's weird because I love PS1 and 2. I have hundreds of games for each, but Sony really effed up the PS3 launch and early days soo bad they turned me off to the system until now.

ok so anyone know where i can get lbp mgs4 and uncharted 1 for cheap before the slim comes out, i would like to pay around $20 for each

LOL -- Yay for hyperbole!

Once again, Sony has the ability to conduct software emulation as this patent discovered earlier this summer shows. My 80 GB MGS 4-Bundle PS3 has software emulation is it works for (I believe) 90% of PS2 games.

Sony will not release said software until one of two things happen:
1) They stop selling PS2s in stores
2) PS2 titles are available on PSN.

So for all the consumers who keep saying, "I won't buy a PS3 until PS2 BC is available" then prepare to wait. There is always the chance, also, that Sony could announce it in the upcoming TGS -- gotta save some big guns, right?

Nice and cold matter a fact post. Much appreciated, Sony will never add BC to the PS3, because they are selling almost more PS2's Still than PS3's and making pure profit from PS2 sales.

Personally myself having NEVER owned a PS2, I bought a virtually Brand new SLIM PS2, on Craigslist for $30, and God of War 2 today from Best Buy.

Metal Gear Solid 3 (collectors edition)
Mega Man
God Of War 2

I even tried God of War 2 on a 80GB MGS4 PS3 thats has like 75% BC, and it was terrible No Shadows, No correct Lights, No Object shadows, No reflections on mirrors, It played fine, but had graphical glitches.

Somehow, Sony will have to do BC, so they can sell old PS2 games on PSN.

I think Sony will just go the MS route and offer "PS2 originals" on PSN. It didn't do well for Microsoft, but maybe Sony thinks it will fare better. Why offer BC when you can charge for it and get some cash out of it? Nintendo thinks the same way as they said they will make GBA games downloadable for the DSI.

I just hope someone stands up to them (IE not buy the PS2 titles) so Sony will change their mind. But I doubt it.

It would have been nice to try God of War 2 on a 60GB PS3 with Full BC upscaled to 1080p, But for $600 + Tax = No way.

$300 No Tax and free shipping is the way to go Love Amazon and nO Tax.

thank you State of Florida Legislature, No Internet Sales TAX!!!,

You need BC to sell PS2 games to people, either an distribute the emulator to everyone or wrap it around each game like they do for Virtual Console stuff on the Wii.
ok so anyone know where i can get lbp mgs4 and uncharted 1 for cheap before the slim comes out, i would like to pay around $20 for each
Well, MGS4 and Uncharted are now Greatest Hits, so they're both $30.
LittleBigPlanet is around $40-45, but I'm waiting for the game of the year edition which will include all the downloadable content included (it will be full price from what I read).

I don't know what's up with the LittleBigPlanet GOTY edition. It was up on Amazon the other day for a microsecond and they took it down. I can't find it anywhere; Sony's blogs and multiple other sources have been talking about it, so I'm pretty sure it's coming to the USA.

Oh, don't know if anyone is interested in getting a PS3 Fat, but sonystyle.com is still having the credit card deal where you can get $100 off the price (the $299 and $399 prices). So, if you got the PlayStation/Sony credit card, and bought either the 80GB or the 160GB + Uncharted bundle from sonystyle, you'd get $100 credit back on your card in about 2 weeks. In other words, you'd get a 80 GB for $199 and the 160GB plus Uncharted for $299 after the credits.

I did this deal at the original prices, but they had a bonus deal where you could get an additonal $200 back if you kept using the card.

Here's the link:

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...1&categoryId=8198552921644604396&N=4294960607

Also, you MIGHT, MIGHT be able to get a Slim from there with the $100 discount since you have 15 days to make your "qualifying purchase" of $299 from SonyStyle. But, you may want to proceed with caution because this is just a guess.

What Jack Trentton said is that, SONY meaning the Big Bosses in JAPAN. Strategically decided

to sell

PS2 games on the PS2 system
PSP games on the PSP system
PS3 games on the PS3 system

to keep the retail channels separate

They have really gone down hill since they got rid off Kaz Hirai as the main Boss, and Phil Harrison.

I think SONY's strategy down the line is to sell PS2 games, via PSN (ala XBLA) as downloads straight to the PSP 2.

Thats what the whole PS2 emulation patent was about.

And why do they need a patenet? They own all the stuff anyways PS2, PS2 game rights etc.

I think its because the PC Emulation of PS2 is getting better and better daily, and Sony wants some way to sue people, saying we OWN PS2 Emulation.

Confirmed. I check the shipping log at an FYE store today. The Systems are in transit on the inventory management screens listing a 8/19 ship date and receipt date as 8/21. Though this could all depend on when UPS or fedex Delivers. Im guessing most stores will have their systems by Saturday, or early monday morning.

And miss out on the chance to add to my backlog? NEVER!!!

Seriously though, I only bought Warhawk to play against a few friends(one from CAG and PSN, the other a long time friend from high school who's on PSN), but I swear there are people who camp for a Warhawk and lob missiles galore and shoot you down before you can even get off the ground.

I bought the game for $5 and I've already got my money's worth back by playing it for about a week, plus I traded in the BT headsets from the $5 bundle I bought during the HWV sale and the $10 Sears clearance to GS for $7.15 each, so I got my money's worth from both copies(my friend from HS has the other copy).

Looking for a little buying advice - apologize for the long post. I've patiently held on to my $75 Amazon console credit (expires 8/31) for hopes of a PS3 price drop - and here we are. Truth be told, I'm a happy 360 owner - play it to death and never had an issue. Used to be a Sony fan, and would like to be again, so I'm pushing aside my disappointment of the no BC and no IR (seriously, it's a Blu-Ray, why not accomodate the universal remotes) and taking the plunge.

So, my questions (specifically to someone who has both a 360 and PS3):
- how's the online for PS3? I pay for Live and feel it's worth every penny - service is tight. Any noticable lag with PS3's online or differences good/bad?
- current exclusives: a little 'meh' for me looking at what's currently out. Uncharted for sure (a huge Naughty Dog fan from the PS2/Jak & Daxter days). Valkyria Chronicles seems interesting. Wipeout looks sharp. Maybe MGS4. Maybe rent LBP to see if it's my style. What under-the-radar games am I missing that are worth exploring?
- I like the quiet and energy reduction being offered with the slims, but I'm a little nervous about long-term quality with their cost cutting production changes. I'm not looking for anyone to predict that one, but wanted to see if anyone had compelling reasons to go with a Fat 80GB aside from asthetics?
- With harddrive upgrades, do the fats use 2.5" notebook drives, or are they running off of cheaper 3.5" standard drives?
- any other thoughts for a 360 owner? happy and no regrets with the PS3?

Thanks!

I have no 360, so I have no basis for comparison. But here's an honest, no BS response to your questions.

- how's the online for PS3? I pay for Live and feel it's worth every penny - service is tight. Any noticable lag with PS3's online or differences good/bad? I use cable and experience no lag with online games (with the very rare instance of time-outs). My guess is that it's game-dependent and how well the developers write the code, in addition to the lag on the other parties' end. All-in-all, it's free and I'm satisfied.
I enjoy the PSN titles of Super Stardust HD and Pixel Junk Series. I really enjoyed Resistance 2's online co-op, very unique experience that required team-work if you wanted to get anywhere.
You can find a comparison chart of the various PS3 models here. It's 90% correct, save for some figures on power utilization.
- With harddrive upgrades, do the fats use 2.5" notebook drives, or are they running off of cheaper 3.5" standard drives? 2.5" notebook drives, although you can find 320 GB HDs for ~$60 last time I checked. There's almost always a promotion in the CAG deals section.

Any more questions, let us know!

The only problem with online is the lack of consistency in which you'll find people using mics/headsets. Which is not at all a big deal to me. Otherwise, the online is just peachy.

Exclusives? I can't recommend warhawk enough. Killzone 2 is a great shooter as well. MGS4 and Uncharted are musts for playing through. I really like LittleBigPlanet, but know that's a title people tend to be on one extreme or the other for.
