Some choice quotes

Soul Calibur IV’s character customization screen, the Create-a-Soul mode, allows you to change costumes and pick new armor and weapons, some of which will be unlocked as you progress through the game. These changes won’t just be physical, they’ll change the way each fighter behaves in the ring. Players can choose from offensive and defensive fighting styles.

There’s a whole new dimension to fighting in this game on several levels. In addition to new combos for all the pugilists, there’s now a Soul Gauge, a large gem that appears at the end of the screen’s life bar. Over the course of a battle, this gauge measures how defensive a player you are. In order to encourage offense, the gauge turns red if you’re too defensive, fending off attacks rather than using combos and tactics to take the fight to your opponent.

In perhaps its boldest statement in favor of offense-first fighting strategy, Soul Calibur IV has introduced the match-ending critical finishers. Once at least part of an opponent’s armor has been destroyed, you can knock him or her to the ground and push all four face buttons simultaneously to pull off a super finishing move. Unique to each fighter, these cinematics showcase a brutal attack that finishes off your opponent regardless of how much life bar remained with just one blow. Cassandra’s cinematic has her putting her butt over her downed opponent’s face as hearts explode around the screen. This can change the fate of a match at any time, but they must be perfectly timed and they’re not easy to pull off.

Although neither Darth Vader nor Yoda was shown in this build, Wayne Shiu, product marketing manager at Namco Bandai told me that both of these Jedis have been balanced inside the game world. Each fighter will also have his own critical finisher that revolves around the Star Wars mythology.

In addition to the weapons-based fighting, Namco Bandai promises a new story set-up based around the swords of power with each character having a unique reason to acquire the all-powerful swords.

And for those worried about the critical finishing moves, they’re only available when an opponent spends the entire match blocking rather than attacking. It serves as a nice balance for those who like to fight fairly.

Namco says: TURTLERS BE DAMNED!

Character armor and cloth gets shredded as a fight progresses, adding realism to the action.

How shredded can ivy's costume get?:drool:

i like the costume from the front. from the back... uhhh, gets kinda cold
don't like her face though

dual katana, yay, musashi would be proud

Her outfit reminds me of a cross of the goth chicks from FFX and FFX-2.

What is the ratio of guys to girls now in this game? I guess Namco just wants the DOA sales (which are they really that great to begin with?)

More fun for lonely guys like me though!

Apparently Shura is a guest designed character, done by the guy who does the Gantz manga.

I just hope she doesn't like explode or anything during the course of the game, ha!

Yea, so were the last two characters revealed too... spiky lady and whoever the other girl is.

Not sure why Namco is letting all these other artists design characters, did they run out of ideas or something? Let's whore the series out to Lucasarts and random manga / anime artists, yea!

SC 4 is looking more and more ridiculous as time goes on.

they're all better than this guy:

There's nothing wrong with whoring out characters when they seem to fit, like this new girl. I think more companies should *tastefully* collaborate. Yoda, Vader, Necrid, Spawn, the anime chick all stick out though.

She actually has 4 katana's. 2 long ones and 2 short ones.

rofl

I love how they wrote him out of the story completely after SC 2, even though they have full rights to use him, since McFarlane designed it for Namco.

What an abomination.
just glad to see more breasts.
Naturally, every woman who fights with swords would wear a thong. :applause:
Necrid and Spawn were awesome.
You're confusing awesome and awful.

Anyway, I'm impressed that at least one of these guest characters almost looks like they belong.

May 17, 2008 - New Bonus Character Revealed, Ashlotte!

Name is Ashlotte.
Character designer is Oh! Great. who's the author Tenjo Tenge and Air Gear ;
the guy also did Asuka's Geisha outfit for Tekken 5 so it's not his first collaboration with Namco.

Two good bonus characters in a row IMO. Also Setsuka is confirmed by the new english soul calibur website.

Holy shit, every new character introduced so far has been a woman.

The game is going to turn into DoA with weapons!

This new character design looks like she belongs in Castlevania.

Ashley + Charlotte?

This new direction is certainly interesting. What would've been even better is if they announced all these anime chicks, then went "oh yah, darth vader and yoda." Maybe they've got more after this...like Indiana Jones or Leonard part 6.

Is Soul Calibur trying to be Super Smash Bros. now or something?

Not that I mind! Some of these characters do look neat, hopefully America gets them all. I'd hate for us to get the bad end of the deal for some legal issues. If that does happen, I'll settle for some video game heroes.

I'm ready to overlook Angol Fear after the last two bonus characters. The giant lance thing looks great. I wonder how many non-bonus characters Namco has up its sleeves, though. And yeah, what's with the 90% female cast?

The game isn't even out yet...

I'm amused that you passed over the really insightful gems like "SC4 sucks" to call out my question.

Anyway, I just think it's weird that they've shown off, what, seven(?) new characters so far with most of them being women and only one being a non-"guest". I don't necessarily have a problem with it because I only care if the characters are fun to play as and look like they fit in with the rest of the cast aesthetically. It's just a strange coincidence. Or maybe when Namco went to recruit all their guest artists, they told them "design a new female character," who knows.

You do know that the ratio is still something like 60% girls 40% guys, right? Even with the extras.

So that's 2 new bonus characters, and 1 returning character. Isn't that all they said that was left in the last famitsu report? Is this the full cast?

The 90% figure was more hyperbole than an actual calculation.

I remember some article (not sure if it was Famitsu) that made it sound like they had a while to go before the full cast was revealed. At this point, I'm hoping for at least two more designed in-house.
