Maybe someone already mentioned this but it isn't about who shoots first, it's about why Han doesn't shoot first.
If we accept that Star Wars is about the life, fall, redemption, and death of Anakin Skywalker, does that mean that no one else gets to change throughout the series?
Han Solo is a mercenary who, throughout the trilogy, learns to care about more than himself and money. Han shot first because he was a dick in episode 4. His first "turn" comes when he ultimately doesn't abandon the Rebels during the Death Star battle. Having Han fire in self defense plants seeds of, "This guy isn't such a scoundrel after all" way earlier than the end of Ep. 4.
I don't really care that much, my complaint is more that the new version of the scene looks like crap from a technical standpoint.
