Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Indie Gem The Cat and the Coup is now free on Steam. This game debuted at the Independent Games Festival this year and got decent attention. Very nice that the developer has decided to release it for free!

Add it to your library now before someone changes their mind and decides to charge $4.99 for it.

Nice! I love how steam is all of a sudden big of free games, it would be nice to see this as a normal thing. Steam could easily do a free game every month or so, there are so many free games out on the internet that I'm sure would be happy to get some extra publicity from steam.

I am confused why this game got bad reviews- I'm telling you here and now that this is a great game. It is beautiful to look at, intense, and has a killer story.

I think reviewers are jaded- I am glad I ignored them and bought this awesome game- I got it for 20$ and would be willing to pay more.

Plus the multiplayer is fun- it has some cool modes.
Kane & Lynch 2 is $6.80 I wonder if it's even worth that much, I've heard this game is terrible
Kane & Lynch 2 has a really unique, visual art style that I really enjoyed; however, it did not make up for horrible gameplay. The game is fun for the first few levels - imo because you are enjoying the visuals - but quickly devolves into a really poorly crafted 3rd person shooter. The enemies feel all wrong; the AI is stupid as hell and they feel a lot like L4D zombies (thin and weightless) versus a solid object. The game was riddled with bugs too. Enemies would get stuck on objects, clip through vehicles, etc. There were also several near impossible scenes with a horrible checkpoint system that was absolutely brutal playing on the hardest difficulty. It also seems like the enemy only has 2 scripted AI modes: move forward (again, unrelenting on the hardest difficulty), or stop and hide behind an object to shoot from (never moving to a new object). It plays more like a 3D Hogan's Alley at some points than like an actual shooter.

If you absolutely must play this, at least play it co-op with a friend so that you can both enjoy then hate it together. I can't really comment on the multiplayer as I only ran through 2 maps after finishing the single-player game and subsequently burned the disc with thermite so it could not make anyone else suffer.

I played on Xbox with a friend; perhaps the PC version is different?

To each his own of course- yeah I played it on the PC and I didn't see those bugs.

But as to it being brutal on the hardest setting- well- that makes pretty good sense to me. I only played it on normal, but that was a good enough challenge for me.

A 3d hogans alley...I just have to disagree man. There is a great cover system for flanking enemies, explosives that you can hurl, and a ton of different weapons for different distances. Calling it a 3d hogans alley doesn't do this game justice in my opinion. What you call horrible gameplay I call effing intense :) Goes to show we all have our own tastes.

But seriously, you wouldn't recommend this game for 6$?

So much for that then xD
Unless they say what new "regulations", I'm gonna assume they wanted some more exclusive titles on Origin and when that got bad press they decided to blame steam.

I think I may have overreacted to the whole debacle last night. I'm still annoyed that I won't be able to add crysis2 and possibly BF3/ME3/TOR to my Steam library, but if Origin starts off strong and offers deals that aren't shit, then maybe it won't be so bad.

That's quite interesting...

Fallout New Vegas for just over $10 is an amazing deal. Definitely going to be picking that up after work. :D Thanks for the heads up! Even in the event that a GotY version comes out, that still leaves about $20 to spend on DLC before you break even. I know the Fallout 3 DLC has gone on sale with 360, but has it ever gone on sale for PC?

Also, I call bull on EA's claim there. I'm going to agree with others saying that they simply wanted to make Origin look even juicier and are trying to avoid the flak for looking like complete assholes. Call me a Steam fanboy, but EA has been known for being a bit too greedy and I have yet to see any issues like this come from other publishers.

Eh, as long as Mass Effect 3 is available on Steam at release I'll be happy.
I think my only real problem with Origin is not that it's another service where you can only get a company's games, but well EA to me is a company of greedy fucks who will do anything to nickle and dime consumers, and this is another cheap way of doing it.

I don't mind Blizzard having their own separate way of doing things, because they don't feel the need to charge $60 for a roster update or $20 for a pack of virtual items for a Sims game.
Yet somehow Valve gets off scot-free after starting their own exclusive service for their games and charging silly amounts of money for TF2 items. ;)
Yet somehow Valve gets off scot-free after starting their own exclusive service for their games and charging silly amounts of money for TF2 items. ;)
Because you are so forced to buy TF2 items ...

And yes, Valve's was exclusive, and started in a time when there wasn't any such service to begin with.

Now there is a platform, that people finally are comfortable with. It wouldn't help to do your best to break away that platform. Compete with it, please, all the better. But if this *had* been an exclusivity change, then it wouldn't have done that at all.

Competition is great because it provides us with more options and cheaper prices. The Crysis thing would've meant one less option, and it's on Origin for $10 more.

Without knowing what new regulations Crysis 2 broke - thus the removal on Steam - the article doesn't explain anything. For all we know, Steam has a policy of not carrying games with DLC that's exclusively available on some other service... and Origin is that other service.

Not saying that's the case, but without knowing the regulation it's hard to say if Steam was trying to be restrictive or keep the playing field open for all.

When my friend and I played, a lot of the shootouts would unfold like this:

1. Run up to some prefab cover (like most TPS).
2. Enemy runs up to their cover (again, like most TPS).
3. Exchange fire.
4. Enemy never moves to new cover ... it's like they were "assigned" a scripted spot to run to then never flank from that spot.
5. Wait for enemy to pop up like gopher from assigned spot and shoot.

Granted not every encounter played out that way but it was enough for me to dislike it. It had some cool things going for it but I still think it was more bad than good. It's possible I was more frustrated than you playing it though since it was on Xbox, on a harder difficulty, and I was doing a lot of repetitive things just to get achievements. I wasn't taking cost into consideration on my last comment, but yeah, sure, I'll play just about any game for around $5.

I just feel there are swarms of other 2-player co-op games out there that I would recommend before this one is all.

So I have crysis in my game library but have never installed it, I'm assuming I will still be able to install int he future from steam ?
So I have crysis in my game library but have never installed it, I'm assuming I will still be able to install int he future from steam ?
That's correct

I just love how some people view these two things as being the same.

- Starting your own DD service and having your games on them exclusivity.
- Having your games on another companies DD service and then them being removed so they then become exclusive to your own DD service.

Nobody complains about Valve or Blizzard because neither of their games have never been on another service and then pulled to push their own exclusive service.

However, with that recent news of it being Valve to actually pull the game then that does change things a bit.

EDIT: And to be honest after hearing that Crysis 2 was pulled from steam, it started getting me scared because I was planning on buying DA:O Ultimate during the summer sale. Of course if it wasn't EA that pulled then that makes me a bit happier. Of course I think we will see once the summer sale comes. If all EA games have a 0% discount then I can assume EA and Valve might not be working together all to well.

Fallout 3 DLC was just on sale for 50 percent off a few weeks back through GFWL.

Being how New Vegas is Steamworks, chances are you will have more opportunities to get the DLCs on sale :)

At the price, I vote to go with Kane and Lynch 2. I had great fun with it and recommend it to anyone who is alright with a rather rough around the edges shooter. I saw no serious bugs.
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/psa-crysis-2-decimation-pack-dlc-out-now-for-xbox-360-pc/

I'm wondering if Steam pulled Crysis 2 because the DLC for the game is done through an "in-game" store rather than through Steam? Has this been done before? Still no word from Valve.
Mass Effect 1 and 2 both had paid DLC that was not implemented through Steam, not to mention every GFWL title which uses the GFWL interface for purchasing DLC directly in-game.

So no, it's something else. It's been mentioned / suspected that EA tried to pull off "exclusive" DLC that steam owners would be unable to get (and that maybe such DLC was against the terms of use). This one I'm a bit more likely to believe, since this generates a need for gamers to use EA's service.

I also think it bares mentioning and notice that Alice: Madness Returns is nowhere in sight on Steam. (Much to my anger and rage) Such things certainly do support the notion that EA for whatever reasons is the one trying to cut ties to Valve here.

Tried spiral knights, didn't really find much entertainment. Played for about an hour and got the tf2 hat, then quit. But I am going to give it another try tomorrow.

This may be a stupid question, but if you play Mass Effect through steam you can import your character to Mass Effect 2. Does your character from Mass Effect 2 import into Mass Effect 3? Has that been announced?

If so, if Mass Effect 3 goes to Origin, would the characters from one and two be able to be imported into a Mass Effect 3 game? (I am a little simple when it comes to computer save files and exactly how all this works)
I always loved the idea behind K&L's multiplayer. Do you know if anyone plays online anymore?
Doubtful. There was a small group after the last sale but they've kinda dried up. The online interface is abysmal, it's just a straight port from the console versions and the party search has a habit of kicking you back to the main menu every time it fails which is an enormous pain.

There may be a couple THIS sale but I doubt it will last.

And the MP doesn't tend to play as you'd expect. Sometimes, the crooks won't even escape and, most of the time, betraying just does not give you much good in the way of rewards. Cash is split evenly if you play nice, which is usually a better risk/reward investment in every instance than betraying unless you are definitely behind.

K&L2 offers an "arcade mode" which is the Fragile Alliance mode with bots run indefinitely. You'll survive longer than you'll want to repeat it so going for score is retarded, but it makes a nice diversion.

The save files for most games (ME1 and 2 included) are saved in the same folder regardless of where you have the game from (usually User/Name/MyDocuments), so that won't be an issue.

Ok, thank you. I am more of a console guy, and didn't know if it mattered which program you ran the games through. Good to hear as I am playing ME 1 and 2 on Steam, and ME 3 wherever I can! Thanks again.

Just picked up Fallout New Vegas for $10.68 (after 15% off) like some others, here anyone else looking to get it feel free to use my code in my sig for 15% off.

Question to the more knowledgeable. I saw on the first page where you can access the .exe file of a non-steam game from the steam menu. Can I do this with games I purchase that are a) not purchased on steam, b) available on steam, but c) unable to activate that copy on steam.

I am speaking specifically about the Tell Tale sale. Can I purchase the DVD sets and import those .exe files, just like any other non-steam game?

You can do it with anything. They don't support Steam achievements and won't track your game time, but otherwise, it's the same thing.

Other small differences:
- You also can't post a recommendation for a game that you didn't buy through Steam.
- You can't Shift-Tab out of the game into the Steam overlay like you can in a game you buy in Steam. (But you can probably Alt-Tab out to the desktop like normal.)

Adding a non-steam game to your library is really just a shortcut system so you can let your Steam Friends know what you're playing.

A small handful of games work very poorly when you link them in from Steam (retail Oblivion), and some non-Steam games can't be linked at all (Mirror's Edge, for one). But for the most part, it's trouble-free. I'm playing Mass Effect purchased from Direct2Drive.com linked as a non-Steam game now. :D

Not true, that's damn well near the only reason to add it.

I can confirm this works. Although not on older games(like GoG). But I've had it work on plenty of games.
Uhhh.. as far as I can tell, you can.
I guess it depends on the game. I can't shift-Tab out of Mass Effect.

Edit: To clarify, I agree with Hydro2Oxide and Pheace that Steam's Shift-Tab works on MOST non-steam games that you manually add to your library. But I maintain that it does not work on all games... Mass Effect is one of several where this hasn't worked for me. I don't think you can bank on it.

Xfire overlay was a pain in that one as well. Some games are just a pain.

AHAHAHA that's a cute thought.

Origin is trying to muscle in on the digital distribution front. So don't expect Mass Effect 3 or *sigh* Battlefield 3 to be on Steam.

Hopefully I'm wrong though.

I'll, without question, be buying retail if it's not on Steam. Granted, I'll have to register it on Origin, which is balls. But at least EA is still forced to take a retail/shipping cut.

I played some of the Torchlight demo a few months ago. I think if I bought it on Steam, I could continue my progress on it. Direct2Drive has it for $5.08 now. That's only 9 cents more than the lowest Steam will have during their sale (if at all, probably will be though). Would I be able to continue my progress from the demo if I bought it from D2D?

Well- we had us some different experiences-

No sense in arguing 'bout it, but I'm with you- I'll play any game when it hits about 6$, but for me, this game is worth far more than that.

I really hope they can finish this story- I remember the devs being interviewed and the question was like "hey man, the reviewers really hated your game, but it sold well."

They said that the people really like Kane and Lynch- they are messed up anti heroes that you can really identify with.

My favorite part of the game is when Lynch starts going effing nuts and is all talking to himself...I started getting really scared that he was gonna shoot me or something! I was playing it alone.

You should be able to use the same saved game. In fact, I don't think you'd even need to find it and move it, since it's in the Roaming folder (assuming you're on Windows 7 for the example below).

You can find the save games in this folder if you need to. Replace (username) with whatever your PC username is and the drive letter with whatever your drive letter is if you're not using C:.

C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\runic games\torchlight\save

Edit: One thing to note that Steam has for Torchlight that D2D doesn't is Steam Cloud saves. That makes it so you can play the game on any computer and use the same save (it's uploaded to Steam's cloud automatically). Not a big deal for some, but it's been useful to me when I switch between desktop and laptop.
